Comments on Channing Frye
Hello Blazer Edgers:
I'm a Suns fan. There are rumors the Suns are looking into picking up Channing Frye. I wondered what you all thought of him. In looking at his numbers, it appeared he didn't get many minutes in a Blazers uniform. Did he not deserve the minutes? Here is what I think I know about Channing:
-Pretty good shot for a big guy from 15 feet away of less
-Not a banger or shot blocker
-Not a big rebounder.
-Pretty good from the line for a big guy
Add all that up and sounds like Channing doesn't like to get his hands dirty on the defensive end. We already have one of those as you may know.
I'm curious what you guys think. Thanks

About right
except he can go out to nearly the 3pt line on his shot……rarely posts up. A little rebounding when given mins ….no defense …but knows how to give a hard foul

Takes too many long 2s
If he shot more 3s and fewer 20+ foot 2s, his jump shot would be a much more valuable weapon.
He’s a useful player if used correctly.

If you want a guy who can shoot and mostly make 18 footers and not do much else, he's your guy
Seems like a good human being though if that matters to you.

If you want a guy on your team that updates his blog
He’s your man. Other than that, looks like you know all there is to know about him.

+2.
If Frye grows a pair, he might have a decent career.

It's not his game
He doesn’t go down low and battle. He is a jump shooting, pick and pop type of PF. He would of been a good player for us, but he is a less talented version of LMA.

Frye is a good player
he can score, and rebound well. Blazer fans seem to have forgotten what he did last year when given some minutes, look back a year to see the real Frye.
07-08 numbers 17.2 mins 49% FG, 78% FT, 4.6rebs, 6.8 ppg. 14.62 PER
Per 36 min numbers 14.2ppg, 9.5rpg, 1.5apg.
He is not a starter, but he can give you the spot start here and there and be productive. As a back up PF and Center he would do well in Phx system.

At the End of the 2008 Season, I think LMA was out and Frye was getting major minutes, and he was basically a double double machine. I loved his game then, but the production really didn’t translate when he was getting spot minutes. Frye can be a beast, he’s super young, I think he’s the cats meow.

if you sign him[and I hope you do]
He will show up in uber shape,he always does. The other thing is that he is a slow starter coming off the bench,it takes him a couple of minutes to get going but when Aldridge sat out a the last 5 or so games 2 years ago he played pretty darn good.

He was a good guy
He was a pretty well liked in the community. His game just didn’t fit our system

That is the epitome of understatement as the Portland community loves Channing.

needs minutes to get going
In every game where he got a decent number of minutes he was decent to great. When LaMarcus was out this year his numbers were pretty decent, despite his atrocious numbers when getting spot minutes off the bench.

he'll do well in your system
he doesn’t like to play defense….he just likes to spread the floor by shooting 18-22 foot jumpers in transition. fits with your run and gun style.

That was my next question, can he run and gun?
I have this odd feeling we’ll sign him. He’s affordable and he’s from AZ so he’ll probably want to come here.
Thanks All!

I think he probably could.
In fact, it might fit his game better than what we do.

He cannot go up and get a rebound
I mean the real NBA rebound kind that a quality “Power Forward” should. Never has never will.
Other than that little blip in his game he is a good player.

Do you mean like Dennis Rodman NEVER did?
It is about position, blocking out and knowing where the ball is going to end up? Listen to Rodman talk about rebounds, he will tell you it isn’t about “going up”

Fine with that
But all of those qualaties still don’t point toward Mr Frye. Lack of tough rebounding is his achilles heel no matter how you size up his game.

You pretty much nailed it right on the head, however...
Channing has shown flashes of brilliance when he has received extended minutes. I think in the right situation Channing could be a very productive player. Maybe in a SSOL system he could be very good. I have faith Channing will be very good somewhere. We had to let him go due to his game being so similar to Lamarcus’s.

One more thing
Though Frye played at Arizona, he would probably dislike the city of Phoenix for the same reasons why he loves Portland.
by ninjasocks on Jul 1, 2009 2:49 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
...
If Frye has a specific role he seems to do better, the blazers didn’t really have much use for him last year which is why he got limited minutes.

Channing Frye is a shooting guard trapped in a Baby Huey/Power Forward's body...
…………………………… He is temperamentally adverse to the low post war that is the NBA, but is money as an outside shooter, a la Rasheed Wallace.
The Trailblazers fans have dibs on his post-NBA broadcasting career.
