Stop Sniffing The Turkey Glue KP!
UPDATE: Another reason NOT to sign Hedo, Rudy is unhappy!!
Does Kevin Pritchard really think Hedo Turkoglu is the missing piece to a championship? Really??
I mean it's one thing to get him cheap for 3 years, but to tie up $50 million for 5 years??? With that kind of money and commitment, there is no flexibility. Hedo is a good playmaker but other than being clutch, he is not that efficient on offense and a woeful defender to boot. We already have Brandon Roy for at the end of game situations.
Look at these stats:
24.08 PER – Brandon Roy
19.13 PER – LaMarcus Alridge
18.13 PER – Greg Oden
15.50 PER – Rudy Fernandez
15.15 PER – Travis Outlaw 45.3%FG, 37.7%3PT
14.82 PER – Hedo Turkey 41.3%FG, 35.6%3PT
12.92 PER – Nic Batum 44.6%FG, 36.9%3PT
I am also hearing the Trailblazers are going after Andre Miller too. Whatever happen to a defensive minded team KP and Nate?
Brandon Roy
LaMarcus Alridge
Greg Oden
Andre Miller
Hedo Turkey
You think Oden had foul problems last year? With this lineup next year, I can't imagine Oden getting out the first quarter with less than 2 fouls.
I beseech you Kevin Pritchard, DO NOT SIGN HEDO TURKOGLU!

That is impossible
no way we can get Turk and Miller. Plus Turk is better at defense than he gets credit for.
Philly signs Miller to 3 years, 8 per, then trades him to us for Blake and Outlaw

I would like to see Turk signed and a trade for Hinrich
You think the Bulls would take Blake, Outlaw, some cash and future second rounders?
That would be a pretty decent team
Hinrich/Bayless
Roy/Rudy
Hedo/Batum
Lma/Pendy?
Oden/Joel
We would still need to sign a vet back up PF for my taste, maybe McDyess for $2 or $3 million per for 2 years with a 3rd year that is a team option or ungaranteed.
KP would have to sign Hedo to a contract worth no more than $8 million in 09-10 for me to be happy about it though, because that would allow the team to sign Hedo, then McDyess with their cap space, then make the trade for Hinrich since it works within the 125% +100,000 rule. Giving the Blazers a total payroll of about $60 million next year.
In 2010-11 the pay roll will jump to close to $70 million depending on alot of things, (LMA’s actual extention amount, how much McDyess signes for, how much Hedo signs for, etc…) My guess is that the Blazers would have to be very careful to stay under the luxury tax line during that season.
But in 2011-2012 depending on how Oden developes they could go way over the luxury tax line, even if Joel doesn’t resign with the team, if Oden developes like we all hope and earns a max or near max deal, (and that says close to what it is now in the new CBA) that would push the Blazers payroll to around $73 million with just 9 players under contract, (I am not including any rookie contracts from 2010-11 or 2011-12). After that Hinrich’s deal expires and depending on how he is playing he may not come back, giving the team some salary cap relief.
I have no doubt that Paul Allen will pay the luxury tax again if he thinks he can win, not sure if this team wins without Oden developing like we hope, and if that happens do we really need Hedo?

probably on and off the injured list the rest of his career....
…which sucks, but seriously how is everyone already counting on a guy for 15 and 5 when he still hasn’t recovered from what can easily be a chronic injury that will always impact his ability to suit up?
by mathrockerpdx on Jul 1, 2009 6:39 PM PDT up reply actions
Is he really that injury prone?
It was just a lingering injury from working too hard to come back. It isn’t a major injury, I think it may be a little early to put him in Yao Ming territory.

Don't you worry, he'll have a good contract year, perfectly times with our championship run :)

only if Deng is part of the deal...
otherwise wasted assets for a non-elite PG in return. All of that would be A LOT to get us DHarris.

BTW
a Per of 15.00 is LEAGUE AVERAGE. So Hedo was BELOW league average this past year! Seriously why does KP and the MSM think he is such a great player???
More food for thought, over the past few years Hinrich has averaged slight over 15 for his PER while Blake has averaged a little under 13. I say go for Kirk, but leave Hedo for someone else to overpay! Kirk is a sizable upgrade over Blake (at least a couple of PER plus much better defense, which PER has a hard time really capturing, defense isn’t all about steals and blocks which are just about the only counting stats the we have for defense), where as Hedo is a lateral move from Travis. The only thing Hedo really does better than Travis is rebound. Travis actually shoots a little bit better and has proven to be just as clutch. Defensivly they are both porr, but at least Travis has + athleticism for the occasional thunderous dunk or crazy block.,

what does
MSM stand for?
I agree with you on Hedo, I would rather not sign him. I would love Hinrich, and feel that just adding him would make this team much better than last year.
Oh and btw per 36 mins Travis out rebounds Hedo, Hedo’s advantage over Travis is his ability to handle the ball, run the pick and roll and be a playmaker for his team, something Travis just can’t do.
Ben II Blazersedge.com || New to Blazers' Edge?
your post was going good until you said the only thing Turk does better than Outlaw is rebound
Have you ever seen Outlaw pass the ball?
Good point, good point
Your right I can’t remember the last time I saw Travis pass the ball with more than 2 seconds left on the clock trying to bail himself out of a bad move.

Forget the numbers for a second and just think about it...
Turkoglu is simply better than any 3 we have right now. You can be concerned about him being overpaid, yes, but purely as a new player on this team we would be better. You can get lost in the maze of numbers sometimes. They don’t tell you everything no matter how complex the algorithm.
This is the thinking that got Harris traded for Kidd
Batum is a great, young (and cheap) defensive-minded 3 in the mold of Trevor Ariza. Why sit him behind an overpriced, no-defense, tower of below-average-PER?
because when Batum is finally ready to grab the reigns of the starting 3 on this team at 23 years of age
Turk will be a nice expiring contract for us to deal for our next position we need to fill…Batum is nice potential, a Hedo right now he is not
I am now a fan of HEDOnism
Rudy Fernandez is Unhappy
Rudy Fernandez wants to play in Spain if Trailblazers Hedo Turkoglu.
that report is untrue, confirmed by Jason Quick
as well as many Blazers officials. and even if he was unhappy, he doesnt have a choice, because he is locked into an NBA contract with us. Also, even if he was unhappy about it (which he isn’t) he would make a great addition to any trade for say a Devin Harris!?….
by GregOden15ppg on Jul 1, 2009 7:17 PM PDT up reply actions
I just think it it's the NBA's plan to devalue Spanish players.
Make them all look like Drama Queens
And while we’re at it, lets have our announcers bash that Spanish kid in the dunk contest, then John Canzano can join in and bash him too while we’re at it.
Rudy will be fine, the coaching staff and the town are in love with the guy for a reason.

NO ON TURK
THIS CANT BE SERIOUS?!!? we cant have this guy…. this is a kp smoke screen?? seems real but I thought kp was smart. somethings gotta give!!! NO ON TURK!!! PASS!!!!!!!

smokescreen
Gotta be a smokescreen…I see no reason to sign Hedo.
I have my P.h.D in unreliable hyperbole.
by Eat Politicians on Jul 1, 2009 5:40 PM PDT up reply actions
Maybe KP had a bit of the second-hand smokescreen
Then had a lapse in judgement and decided Hedo was the next big thing.
Erk.

Yes, that starting 5 wouldn't be a defensive stalwart,
but it would be better than last year. Miller is not known as a good defender, but he would be an upgrade over Blake, and Turkoglu would be an upgrade defensively over Travis.
One Poblem
You can’t sign a player and then trade him for up til 90 days.
What if Mike Barrett is right about sign and trade free agent
Then we could package Turk like this:
Blake, Outlaw, Rudy, Turk for Rondo & Allen
or
Prz, Blake, Outlaw, Turk, Raef (sign & trade/cut) for DWade & Jermaine ONeal
LOTS of options open up if we can do that type of deal!!
"What we have here, is a failure to communicate."
I think the Heat would do that deal!
by kobisportsguy on Jul 1, 2009 3:09 PM PDT up reply actions 1 recs
Those were just examples
but, why wouldn’t they take 4 potential starters for an often injured All-Star and an over the hill All-Star?
"What we have here, is a failure to communicate."
that sounds terrible
Rudy alone could turn out to be an Allen caliber big time shooter in this league.
And yea, I’m sure Miami would jump all over that….why would we even want Roy and Wade on the same team?
by mathrockerpdx on Jul 1, 2009 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions
Dwayne Wade?......
are you serious? try stepping into the miami heat’s shoes for a second and try to find a reason why they would trade him. He is the 3rd best player in NBA. The only reasonable trade for him would be for LeBron James.
by GregOden15ppg on Jul 1, 2009 7:20 PM PDT up reply actions
I dont want a DeWayne Wade rental anyways...

I personally am not quite ready to believe that
Rudy is, in fact, unhappy… I would like to know who the “league source” is. Rudy’s agent in Europe? Other teams under the cap who want to sign Turkoglu like Toronto? I want to see a direct quote from Rudy himself, or at least someone who’s been in contact with him the last few days, like Casey Holdahl. He posted today in his blog and said nothing about it.
This is actually a pretty logical move to sign Turkoglu.
Most championship teams have at least three top tier scorers. Although most people here might not admit it, Turkoglu is a top tier scorer (considering he’d only have to be our 3rd scorer. We’d have our three (Roy, Aldridge and Turkoglu) as well as Oden since he will be making massive improvements offensively from last season to this season. It would also take pressure off Brandon over the course of a season, keeping him fresher.
Also, imagine a starting lineup of:
PG: Steve Blake or Andre Miller
SG: Brandon Roy
SF: Hedo Turkoglu
PF:LaMarcus Aldridge
C: Greg Oden
with a bench of……
PG: Jerryd Bayless
SG: Rudy Fernandez
SF: Martell Webster/Nicholas Batum
PF: Jeff Pendergraph
C: Joel Przybilla
Getting Hedo Turkoglu would allow us to trade Outlaw, Blake, Webster and Fernandez for possibly a Devin Harris. You might be thinking that’s too much to give up, but as the saying goes "You have to give up something to get something. And we’d basically be trading Rudy for Devin Harris because Blake would be upgraded by Harris, and Outlaw and Webster leaving would actually be a positive because it would de-clog our small forward position and make it a clear cut rotation (Turkoglu/Batum). If Rudy doesn’t like Hedo coming to PDX, then he’s an excellent piece for a trade.
Pritchard Knows More Than We Do
and he doesn’t just make snap decisions. Turkoglu will ease up pressure on Roy in the 4th qtr, give us a third scoring option, develop a wing pick and roll and he has a substantially higher basketball IQ than trout. I’m sorry, but he’s gonna land in Portland and none of your whining here is gonna change that.
So get in line and drink the punch. Personally, I think we’ll learn to love him once you see him in a Blazer uniform.

I mostly agree
Although I don’t necessarily like moving the 4 pieces you mention for Harris, I think brining in one major player in the offseason is enough. But those prospective lineups do look quite formidable, with Pendergraph as being the only unknown really
by mathrockerpdx on Jul 1, 2009 7:21 PM PDT up reply actions
Honestly
I would not be the least bit surprised if this is the direction this is heading. I think something is going on here that we know nothing about. This trade is really starting to make more and more sense to me. Sign the FA then trade for the PG. That is one very formidable lineup, especially if it was Harris.
forget it hedo is to old
by the time this team meshes hedo will be out you bring into to many new pieces and things get messed up….. focus on the positions we need starting point guard we have to many sf what we gonna do with 4
I love Rudy, but
if he is going to turn into a prima donna because the Blazers sign Turkoglu, then I’m glad he shows those colors sooner than later and the team can send him packing for someone who will shut up and play his heart out for McMillan.
Dunk
I have seen no quote
Pure rumor and speculation at this point. Let’s not jump all over Rudy until the facts are known.
by mathrockerpdx on Jul 1, 2009 7:12 PM PDT up reply actions
agreed
if we all made a big deal about every nba rumor this time of year our heads would explode. just try to occupy yourselves until next wednesday. the we’ll have hedo in hand and we’ll be in the initial stages of a trade for a starting pg.
