Monty Williams to Interview for Timberwolves Head Coach?
A very interesting footnote in this post from AWoj over at Yahoo!...
Minnesota GM David Kahn plans to interview multiple candidates over the next month for his coaching vacancy, including a rising star on Nate McMillan's staff in Portland: Monty Williams.
Could this be Tom Penn all over again?
For the interview I did with Monty last year, click here.

If he's okay with having 4 point guards and 6 forwards
Sure!
All aboard the Kirkwagon!

You have to be crazy
to think someone would turn down the opportunity to be a head coach.

GO for it M.W.!
You’ve earned it, and all as a Blazer fan I would still support him leaving for a head coaching stint! But be ready to get your but whooped by the Blazers for a decade or so!!!

i had the chance to hear Mont speak at a conference a few weeks back. that is one impressive guy. captivates a room. passed around his Championship ring from the Spurs. might not get this job but one is definately coming soon…

i hope not
Id rather see him go somewhere he could succeed w/in a couple years. For his sake he should ride it out with the blazers for a few rings and then go when his stock is @ an absolute high!!
If I've said it once, I've said it a million times: I heart Portland!!!

The last time that one of Nate McMillan's assistant coaches was hired as head coach of the Minnesota ...
Timberwolves it was Dwane Casey, which ended in failure. So, if Monty Williams is brought in by David Kahn, I don’t expect that either one will be long for the business.
In all fairness, Williams can’t do nothing with a frontline that has the defensively inept, offensively inefficient Al Jefferson as its anchor. The supporting cast is a piss-poor collection of players, too, especially if Ricky Rubio is smart enough to either get himself traded elsewhere or stay in Europe for the next couple of seasons.

top to bottom can you remember a less-talented roster in nba history?
by Ben. on Jul 1, 2009 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
The 1972–73 Philadelphia 76ers.
I forget who played on that so-called team, but if you’re talking least-talented roster, 73 losses makes a convincing argument.

Maybe you were thinking that
but what you wrote was “can you remember a less-talented roster in nba history?”

Monty, don't take the job!
Timberwolves are setting you for failure. Love and Jefferson frontline. Rubio and Flynn backcourt. It’s a hit job.

When people are interested
you talk to them. Sometimes the opportunity and fit can surprise you. I had a company interested in me and I did the interviews just a means of networking, expanding my horizons, and also it’s great practice. In my case I found it to be a nice fit and turned down another offer for about a 1/3 more and left my current job… which then went out of business.
My point is that Monty should go and talk REGARDLESS of what he thinks because it’s good practice and you never know… you could change your mind like i did.
I do not want to see him go. I admit i do feel a little frustrated that people are looking at so many opportunities before the team has DONE anything (no championship, it doesn’t count). Still, it’s his right and he owes it to himself to check out opportunities that present themselves.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

Monty loves his golf - did you see his tan on Comcast at the draft?
I played my first round in Minnesota one year in early June and the water soaked up to my ankles on the fairway. 135 inches of snow on the ground until late May will do that.
More importantly, it is a dead-end job. It is years of losses and frustration as Ricky and Jonny form the most disfunctional backcourt of the league (and I like both players separately). No veterans. No leadership except from Jonny and he is the lesser of the PG’s and still a rookie.
Monty is better than this but it does not hurt to turn them down and get his name out there.

Wow, right now.
The poll are split 33% for each category. with Brrr and No taking 17s votes versus Yes at 171 votes.

How can anyone not vote yes?
The only people who turn down NBA head coaching positions are coaches with long track records in the NBA who can pick and choose their jobs. If an assistent coach is offerd the head job somewhere else, he would be foolish to turn it down, even if he knows going in that he will have a tough time winning with his new team.

Maybe not all - Red Auerbach never had a losing season
Phil Jackson
KC Jones
Gregg Popovich
Jerry West
Avery Johnson
Larry Bird
All also never had a losing season.
But most do lost at least at first.

Whether this is it or not. Wish him all the best whatever happens.

Count me in as one only posting on this topic because...
…the vote is almost a complete 3 way tie. 33% vs. 32% vs. 33%. Never seen that before in my life with ANY poll of over 100 votes. Probably not thinking too far back though.

Monty: If you go we will understand.
If you stay we will be ecstatic. Think it over and make your decision – how can it be a bad decision? Both alternatives seem pretty attractive. – Elgin

Of course he'll consider it
you have to expect to start your NBA career with a losing team. Winning teams whose coaches leave generally don’t want to hire a rookie coach unless it is one of their own assistants. I like Monty, I want him to stay, but I know we would survive without him, and I certainly want him to get his chance at a head coaching position. If he takes it I hope it is because it is a good fit, not just because it is offered. (And maybe they’ll find the perfect fit in one of the other ’multiple candidates.")
