Hypothetical: would you trade Oden for Chris Paul?

We've talked about how it's not likely NO would take LMA for Paul, but what about Oden? The actual deal would be Chandler and Paul for Oden, Outlaw, Blake, and Bayless. Despite Paul's poison pill contract, the salaries match up pretty well and would have little impact on this year's cap space. They might want Rudy or Batum instead of Bayless though. NO could save money by cutting Blake and Outlaw, or could keep them. All the players going to them are young (except Blake) with cheap contracts.

You'd have to make the following assumptions:

1. NO is in cost-cutting mode.

2. Greg Oden is still a highly sought-after commodity.

3. Pryz and Chandler could co-exist without fist fights.

4. You still have cap space to sign 1 backup PG & Patty Mills.

5. NO would still be able to draw fans using Oden's name instead of Paul's.

That's a lot of assumptions, and it likely has no chance. But would you do it if NO was willing?

What if instead you send Chandler to Minnesota, Rubio-Blake-Outlaw-Rudy to NO, and Paul and bad Minnesota contract & future first rounder to us? We keep Oden, & NO gets Rubio & Rudy as their marketing stars. Minnesota gets a true center & gets a bad contract off the books for a redundant PG (Flynn is their guy) & a future pick. If you could get the numbers to work, would you do that?

NO! NO! NO!

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

You get squeezing down to the exact things. Now it's not about fluff. It's down to deal points."

seriously?

this one is a no brainer. I’m not anywhere near calling Oden a bust, but he certainly isn’t a prove commodity. Chris Paul is . You do the deal in a heartbeat and never look back.

As for the other offer – that one is even easier to agree to. Both are complete pipe dreams.

How did you guys win that?

Wow

If I started an “I’d rather” list, I could probably come up with 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 other things I’d rather happen than trading Oden for a guard.

Of Course we would do that deal

While Oden could be great, CP3 is great, and we would still have 2 good centers.

Not to mention that any trade that puts Joel and Chandler on the same team is priceless and worth a reality tv series.

wow,

I didn’t read your second deal until after I responded to the first, the second is a no brainer for us, and even though a Rubio/Rudy back court could be interesting and very fun to watch in NO, I don’t see them doing it.

Paul
Roy/Rudy
Martell/Nic
LMA
Przybilla/Chandler

are you telling me that a few old vets wouldn’t sign on to that to get a title?

by Cablinasian on Jul 1, 2009 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

if McDyess and an old PG, maybe Anthony Carter, sign on, then that’s a solid ten man rotation.

With the rule changes

made in the last few years, we can throw out almost everything we know about the history of championship teams. Talented, quick PG’s are really effective in the NBA right now and they are getting more and more effective every year since the rules went into affect. It is hard to predict the future, but it is easy to see how teams with talented, quick point guards will be very hard to deal with.

Besides, Oden while I love him and believe he will be great, is not a sure thing, CP3 is, so if that trade was brought up KP would have to take it, especially the 2nd trade proposed above. I don’t want to trade oden, but if LBJ or CP3 are offered you have to do it as of now, hopefully that won’t be the case after next season.

one of the best defensive centers in basketball, two of the seven best players in the league, good forwards in Batum and Aldridge… most talented team in the league.

Yes it does!!!

When you factor in Hedo is the starting SF, and Outlaw, Rudy, Blake coming off of the bench, no brainer!!!

Y to the E to the S

I’d consider trading Roy for Paul, we’re talking about one of the best PG’s of the last decade who still is very young.

Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!

I'd trade them both

They need a good draw down there.
It would be sad if the Hornets had to leave NO after their long and rich history in that city.

I don’t think that’s possible

In less than a heartbeat

What’s less than a nanosecond?

I can’t believe anyone would ever even say no to this. Trade someone who is statistically the best PG since Isiah and maybe even better than that for an unproven center with potential but not much production and some prospects/role players?

Come freaking on.

by AndrewD on Jul 1, 2009 11:33 AM PDT reply actions

What's the point of this?

It’s like coming up with a package to trade for LeBron James.

It’s not going to happen because New Orleans would never do it. Chris Paul is the reason their attendance was up last year. He’s the reason people go to games there.
