Glad we didnt trade travis outlaw and steve blake

I do believe that we should not trade outlaw and blake because of the fact that this was the blazers first playoff round since 6 years ago. To think they could not get better is possible, but the idea of that they could get better also is another thing that we should take into consideration. In addition, these guys got us to 54 wins, and Travis Outlaw was a BIG part of that and same with Steve Blake well.. Steve Blake only saved us once in that buzzer beater with the Raptors with a 3 pointer but hey thats not the only thing he helps us on, its the distribution of the ball and also that 3 pointer he can make. Travis Outlaw can crate his own shot and man he has saved us so many times in the regular season with game winning shots. With the experience they dealt with in the playoffs they could get better or get worse, if it does get to worse then I think we can start talking realsitic trading options. This is what I think the line up should be for the next regular season:

2009 - 2010 line up

SG -

Start - Brandon Roy

Backup - Rudy Fernandez

PG -

Start - Steve Blake

Backup - Jerryd Bayless (not sergio beacuse we need to develop Bayless and do it NOW!)

PF -

Start - LA

Backup - Travis Outlaw

SF -

start - Nic Batum

backup - Martell Webster

Center - ( also we gotta develope Oden and it needs to be now)

Start - Greg Oden

Backup  - Joel Pryzbilla

and we very well might

though I would be happy to keep them here. I think Bayless will be the starter when the season comes though, and blake plays so calmly and in control that he would be perfect for keeping the ship afloat when the starters are out.

is it just me or is that a Ha sighting?

Hard to say as he has a nice skill set that a lot of teams could use, but are not willing to give up much for.

Agree with OSUblazerfan

they may yet be traded, KP will do something before next year begins. The man just gets it. In KP i trust.

So going forward

you think the Blazers should keep everything basically “as is”? It seems to me as many people here have been talking, that there should be some offseason move to find a veteran player to immediately add that playoff experience to the line-up. The Blazers could go one more season and see how it plays out, but at what point should they make the move to step up from a playoff team, to a title contender? I think there is no reason not to do what it takes right now in order to become a more legitimate title contender in the upcoming season. Who that person is, I have no idea, but I think KP will do what is best for the team, and give them the best shot to win it all in the upcoming few seasons. However I agree that both Blake and Outlaw did have a huge contribution to the Blazers getting to 54 wins.

by oregonsportsaddict on Jun 9, 2009 12:26 AM PDT reply actions

You rarely if ever can keep a team "as is".

It is a dynamic environment. Contracts expiring, a draft every year.

Portland has 3 UFA’s, 1 RFA and one player (Sergio) who may be looking to move on. That’s a third of the team that could easily be gone before the start of next season.

But that would also leave 8 of the 9 guys who garnered the most minutes last season, plus Bayless and Webster. So in that sense it could be considered “basically as is.” And yes, I see no problem with keeping it that way. This does not preclude adding a veteran bench player or two. And it doesn’t mean we will see the same distribution of minutes next season.

Portland has made it to the tweaking stage. They don’t have to make a major move. They don’t need to dramatically upgrade at any starting position. They just need to adjust and tweak, looking to adjust to the fluidity in personnel that is the NBA and fine tune what is already a pretty good looking team.

well, they still can be traded this summer...

But I agree. I have total confidence that we can win with another year with Blake/Roy/Bayless running the point. Hinrich would be nice, but I don’t want the Blazers to give up too much for him (Bayless, Fernandez, or Batum). I also don’t think the Blazers need another all star in the lineup. I feel like next year is going to be a big one for Oden, Webster, and Batum. Those three can make a big difference in the playoffs once they get into a rhythm.

The flaw I see in your suggestion is

You have a bottle neck with Travis, Webster, Batum. Minutes behind aldridge are scarce. Minutes behind Webster (because Batum won’t beat him out) will be scarce.

Do I object to keeping all the players? nope, because you ahve a good point. however we need to have playing time for the talent and we can’t get that at the SF position. Rudy may have some issue with playing time as well or Bayless will.

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

i just wrote a post about some interesting off season moves the blazers could make the link is

I am in love with the Portland Trailblazers as well as Kevin Pritchard.steve Blake cant play defense and Travis outlaw just doesnt have a good basketball IQ. Aaron Brooks is good but he is no basketball god if i recall he torched steve blake in almost evry game of that 6 game series. Travis Outlaw is 6-9 can jump out of the gym but yet he can only dunk on fastbreaks. He shoots fade aways and garbage shots that have no chance of going in. He also cant guard the power forward so i dont know why you would have him at backup pf. we need a couple changes this year during this off season still keep rudy brandon Lamarcus Greg Joel and Batum and were fine. The other guys are expendable. That is the one thing about us blazer fans right now we finally got good character guys and we are attached to them. In order to win a championship were going to need a couple of more pieces to surround Brandon Roy.

get rid of travis outlaw

by flynn4blazers on Jun 9, 2009 9:56 AM PDT reply actions

What pieces do we need?

Looking at the above roster we are 10 players deep if we do nothing. Yes their is room for improvement, but look how the team is built. We can get no worse at PG. In fact it is set that Bayless can surpass Blake when the time is right. Yes people are dissappointed with that, but it was good enough for 54 wins. The other weaknees is Trout as Backup 4. No Trout can’t guard most 4’s but none of those 4s can guard Travis. And let’s be honest, Trout is not Zbo at his defense. We could be doing much worse. So if KP sat on his hand and did nothing, I’d expect the team to improve.

The real team’s needs center around not creating adversity on the bench. This is the main why Sergio is rumored to move, because it appears that management is more optimisitic for Bayless than Sergio long-term for fit within our core team. Trout is also more deserving than backup 4 minutes. Webster will take Trout’s minutes at the 3. I don’t see how we can honestly keep Trout, Webster and Batum and keep all happy. Since we love travis, we will need to set him free. Same for Sergio. This leaves us with a hole at 3rd string PG and back-up 4. Ah, which brings us back once again to every trade drawer. Thus all tweaking is to really desing to keep a happy bench as happy bench is greater than a All-star bench (as proved by Whittsit).

Bayless

I do not believe jerryd Bayless can play the point at the NBA level. In middle School he was a combo shoot first guard. On his aau team he was a shoot first guard. In high school he was a shoot first guard. In collegehe was a shoot first guard. even in summer league last year he had like 2 assists in like 7 games. While some Blazers fans were going crazy about his scoring I noticed his lack of passing. On a team where he is the 4th scoring option on the court when he is in he must pass the ball. He is not an elite passer and turns the ball over a lot. He slashes to the hoop to much only to get his shot blocked. He has had his good games but i Just dont seem him donig much good in a Blazer Uniform.

Bayless' potential and Roy = Perfect match

I would enjoy the aesthetics of a fearsome penetrator at the point more than watching a knock down jump shooter like Blake. Our fantasy about Bayless is that he will do both – slash and shoot. Allen Iverson and Bayless give me the same vibe. He might be a real nice player. One thing is sure the entertainment value is off the hook if Roy is the right fist and Bayless’ potential is the left.
