Sports Business Radio Interviews KP
Worth your time on a cloudy Saturday... Brian Berger of Sports Business Radio interviews Kevin Pritchard.
KP talks about his belief that trade activity will happen early this offseason, a workout pact between Jerryd Bayless and Greg Oden, how the team's analytics show Greg improves the play of those around him, and a host of other topics.
Go check it out.
Updated 9:05PM I updated the link above with a slightly longer (~20 minutes) version of the interview... enjoy. KP was only one of the guests on this week's SBR show. For the full show audio, click here.

I am encouraged (and reinforced inmy own view) by both comments
"What's so interesting is that this team took on a dynamic that was very special. I don't think we as a group, in terms of management, coaches and players, realize what we did as a young team. We broke all the metrics. We broke all the molds. Our challenge is can we continue to do that. As young of a team with 54 wins, no issues off the court, phenomenal chemistry." - Kevin Pritchard
Great to hear about, could we read about it?
I would really appreciate if someone would take the time to type up the transcript. The deaf members of the community appreciate your effort!
If he even does half of what Bayless does, league be warned.
a workout pact between Jerryd Bayless and Greg Oden,
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
Nice interview
Good props for Greg also in how he affects other player’s game when he is on the court.

i like when he said
“greg’s ceiling is so high, that i don’t even want to say he can be a ferocious defender”
kp is obviously saying that greg will become a super, amazing ridiculous defender
THe last 5 minutes of that interview was full of great kp quotes
Greg is gonna be awesome...
I am still super-stoked about the BrainTrusts ability to bring in the right players….
Roy…. Aldridge….. Batum…… Bayless… ODEN…. keeping Martell….. keeping Pryzbilla….. this team is going to be SOOOOO EXCITING and good.
THIS is when Character is going to pay off… when we look at our roster and say “all we need to do is to continue to improve in all aspects”…. Character will come through for us, having work-a-holics like Jerryd Bayless pushing it… nice.

Pretty much sounds like the Blazers are going to get Kidd
He pretty much said that Sergio will be gone and that he’s going to get Kidd this summer.

A welding torch to an I-beam. Some team is going to have to pry Bayless from KP rigor-mortised hands.
Thanks Ben!
This made my finals studying week of mundane boredom a little bit tolerable.
What are you impressions of Roy?
"He's just a very, very good basketball player. Very smart. Very heady. He can do a little bit of everything on the court. As coaches, when we scout Portland we kind of put him in the same category as Kobe (Bryant), LeBron (James), Dwyane Wade. We treat him the same. He's that good."

Time to bust out
my green hornet decoder ring. KP speak is way beyond my comprehension level.
I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.
""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."
His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

what a ripoff… that doesn’t say we are getting Kidd at all!!!

I've gone from
Kidd would be an ideal tutor for the entire team, to he is just to old, to Kidd could teach Bayless the ropes, to Kidd is too expensive. to my final conclusion that kidd rock,,Rocks!

Kidd = not gonna happen.
Big bucks. Very, very old.
I watched a fairly big number of Mavs games this year — probably 20 counting the playoffs.

some guys on the Mavs board
were thinking that $10m was his ceiling, more like about 6-8m. You are right that he is 36 but at the same time you do not give a 36 YO player a big contract.
Granted he cant D a lot of the newer younger PGs but who can? He knows how to play team D and can help out with that in addition to his playmaking skills.
Besides, he can teach Bayless how to play the point over the next 2-3 years and only have to play 25mpg where he can be effective.
Maybe a S&T with Sergio and one of Travis/Webster for a re-signed Kidd with a 3 year $9m-7m-5m and/or add another year at 3m would be perfect for him and us.

Nash couldn't teach Barbosa to play the point.
I’m not sure how much Kidd could teach Bayless in a short time. Although… Kidd is a different type of player. He might actually have a lot of good stuff to pass on and it seemed like all those team USA guys learned a lot from him. Kobe and Lebron talk about him like he’s some sort of guru.
I would rather just have him on the coaching staff.
Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

Roles were totally different
Nash was the clear cut PG and Barbosa was the SG. They had no reason to put Barbosa @ PG and now he is so set in his ways. If Nash was 36 and Barbosa was only 20 then he would of learned but he wasn’t.

Jason Kidd has got a good thing going with the Dallas Mavericks.
For everyone’s sake, I hope Kidd re-signs there for something like a one-year, $10 million contract.
he is not going to sign a
1 year deal.
Much like Brand 30, Baron 30 and Maggette 30 they gave up a guaranteed year worth more for less $ per year, but longer money overall.
This will be Kidds last big chance at a paycheck so he will want at least 3 years

I really, really, really, hope you are right
I don’t want to see him on the team. I did not think what I saw of him this year was that great.
He won't be getting 20 mill per year.
Even from the Mavs. No chance his contract exceeds what Artest will get.
Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley(T)/Tyreke Evans(D)
SG Options: Terrence Williams(D)
Forward Options: Reggie Evans(T) - Taj Gibson(D), Damion James(D), Kevin Seraphin(D)

Quick Question?
Who do you think the players are that might be on the table because their franchise is in need of money? I keep hearing rumors that there is some big name players who might be available from teams who need to clear cap space? Who were they talking about?

good interview. to echo everyone else…
pairing bayless with oden is the best thing we could have done.
regarding bayless- he obviously has flaws in his game, but the faith kp has in him and his work ethic make me feel confident he will grow into our pg of the future.

They did it themselves
It’s a poorly kept secret that Jerryd and Greg were each other’s best friend on the team last year. Call it serendipity.
think about it....
Pick and Roll – Player Chemistry between Jerryd Bayless and Greg Oden in the works…. how many dunks will this create?
Two-Man Offense Player Chemistry between Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge …. the focal point of Portland’s tempo controlled offense….
Defensive Stoppers Nic Batum and Joel Pryzbilla providing steals, blocks, stops and everything else on the Hustle Board…
Raining Three’s Rudy Fernandez and Martell Webster, hopefully these guys are working on their slashing too….
I love this team and we are going to be so damn exciting!!!!!!

KV will drive you mad every time you listen to him if he hasn’t already.
Different guy. Our KV is a morbidly obese blowhard who critiques professional athletes for a living.
Come to think of it, that always bugs me. Why do sportswriters and radio guys all look like fat dorks who drink to much and never get laid? Seriously. It makes you wonder if there is something clinically wrong with being a fan.
History lesson
KV has forgotten more insider info then any of us have ever had. KV was Whittsetts mouth piece he announced deals like Pippen, Stoudamire, Wallace, Sabas etc, etc. long before espn or the Oregonian they guy was nails. Wow this must be a seriously young crowd KV is the godfather of inside info. He did Make Colin Coward of Espn an official insider Colin had nothing if KV did not let him in the know. Smack away if you choose but trust me anyone that followed the blazers of the late 80’s till the mid 90’s knows he was on top of the game.

When people adopt a speech mannerism like that I always wonder
if what really mean is the opposite. For example, when somebody says, “honestly” or “to be frank” or “if truth be told” all the time, I begin to suspect that they’re hiding something.
"Just kidding"
I think it's KP's way of not saying, "Duh."
“No question,” is his response to a lot of softball questions.
Bayless working out with Oden....
Ben you are my hero. I have been looking for confirmation. I like it. If Oden catches half J Bays fire,… look out western conference. We have yet to see Bayless getting the ball to Oden at the rim. BOOM SHAKALAKA !
" know what you know, not what you hear. " Go Blazers !!!!
When the trainer was on 95.5 he said that Oden works out very hard....
Post surgery the word was that Oden was working very hard…. so it seems that Funky Cold Greg Oden doesn’t pussyfoot around the gym. True, he couldn’t run full court and jump full strength… which really didn’t fully prepare him for the past season, but with Greg Oden having a full off-season being healthy and being able to run fully AND pairing himself up with workout wonder Jerryd Bayless… I expect to be at very least pleasantly surprised with the skills that these two kids will bring to the roster next year.
I also wouldn’t be surprised to see nice leaps in consistency and efficiency from Aldridge, Rudy, Batum and Martell….

I, on the contrary, believe next season is when most folks will declare Jerryd Bayless officially a bust.
I can't remember why you think this but
might I suggest that it’s a bit more pleasant being a glass half full guy than a glass half empty one — for you and others, too! It is quite possible that Jerryd will not be the next Tony Parker, Steve Nash, or Jason Kidd, to name three entirely different kinds of players who have been called “point guards”. But surely he has shown an ability to get to the basket and score that sets him apart from many other players. And he is YOUNG, and has not had much game experience. And he DOES work hard and he IS an intelligent guy and there is simply no reason to suspect that he will not be a decent player. Whether he is the best fit on the Blazers for whatever role they are grooming him remains to be seen. But even if he is not, I don’t foresee any situation in which it would accurate to call him a “bust”.
"Just kidding"

Size matters not! Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm. And well you should not. For my ally is the Force, and a powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter. You must feel the Force around you; here, between you, me, the tree [his nickname for Greg], the rock [vulg. for “the ball”], everywhere, yes. Even between the land and the [champion]ship.

Change is something to accept....
AK, don’t be one of those people who refuses to admit when you are wrong even in the face of truth… when Bayless comes around and proves to be at least a serviceable Pro, your call is dead and you will have to wear it. On the other hand, if you are a little more realistic in your assumptions/guesses like a little more on the fence, then you don’t have to worry about the big WRONG that you would have to meet, rather than being only a little wrong….
Honestly, I don’t know how anyone couldn’t believe in a kid who has that much physical talent teamed with that much work ethic. Jump on to this bandwagon now, cuz when Bayless is more effective than Rajon Rondo and lighting up the Rose Garden… you may want to be rocking that JayBay jersey son.

I was wrong about Shelden Williams, who I thought would be a successful NBA player.
I, however, have yet to be proven wrong about Jerryd Bayless. In fact, I’m thus far right about him.
I just hope that if Bayless is a bust — which I consider to be a very strong likelihood — that each of his staunch supporters will concede that they were wrong about him.
My bad, AKSheldon....
you are thus far “right”….

Guys that work hard.
If a player has even a small amount of talent and they work-out constantly like Bayless, they can become something great. That is my view on Bayless. Mid-level talent+Super-star work ethic= All-star player.

I am very excited about this
Love that drive & determination, despite his short arms. Players have overcame it before, along with being coined as a “shoot first combo guard”. I hope for big improvements.
Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley(T)/Tyreke Evans(D)
SG Options: Terrence Williams(D)
Forward Options: Reggie Evans(T) - Taj Gibson(D), Damion James(D), Kevin Seraphin(D)
Bayless in my mind
is kind of a poor man’s Dwyane Wade.

Hard for me to see anything big going down...
by the tone of KP’s interview here. I guess even if he did have a particularly big move in the works he probably wouldn’t say anything, anyway, but it sounded to me like he’s very content with the roster as it is. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing yet; some days I want to trade for Hinrich or Conley, but then on other days I don’t want to mess with a young team that clearly has good chemistry.
As much fun as all the trade scenarios are, I’ll be happy once KP has made any moves he’s planning to make so I can just be excited about next season without constantly mulling over Blake v. Hinrich, Hinrich v. Conley, Conley v. Bayless, Bayless v. a short-winged Emu, Rocky v. Apollo Creed, etc.
We should only make minor roster changes.
I say that we should keep this team together for another year. I think we have something special here. Team Chemistry is important. If you have a bunch of guys that have played together a lot they’ll know what each of their team mates is capable of. Good Chemistry= Low rate of turnovers. The biggest need for the Blazers is a back up PF. Besides that we really don’t need anything more.
Some would argue that we need an upgrade at pg, but I think Bayless is still our guy for the job.
