are you kidding me? no summer league for bobcats
What are the bobacts thinking by not having a summer league team? It seems like if you want young and cheap talent and have it develop then summer league is the way to go. This seems like a fairly silly cost cutting measure to me.

Does Summer League really matter?
Is playing with rookies and scrubs better for a player than practicing with his teammates or in that gym in LA with the other NBA players?

Good questions
It seems like a few cash-strapped teams might answer this one with “No” this summer. It’s not really a necessity, more like another development and marketing tool for the league and the teams. Showcasing the freshly drafted rookies, giving assistant coaches a chance to be in charge of a team, evaluating players for training camp (though the percentage of undrafted guys who make it is rather small), etc.

And a place for the NBA to develop and evaluate potential referees . . .

I have never really bought into the whole needs gametime to develop thingamajig....
There isn’t that much of a difference between a summer league game and scrimmaging at your local gym with nba talent. Of course, there comes a point where a player has to actually play in meaningful games. I just don’t really think 5 summer league games or 10 mpg during the season is going to make or break a player….

It is a valid question
and I think the answer of how valuable it is comes on a team to team basis. I think for veteran teams who are getting late picks and what not it is probably not of the biggest concern, but for a team that is young and still looking to plug holes and see their recent players in a competitive setting under team control then it becomes more important.
It sounds like this is a cost cutting measure rather than a basketball decision and that seems worrisome for the long term health of the franchise. If the Clippers can empty out the change purse and field a summer league team than it is probably not the most expensive thing in the world. If this came from an established, quality franchise then it would be thought provoking, but at this point it seems like ridiculous penny pinching.

It matters for fringe players because it is a place
where they can showcase their talents for other NBA teams, the D-league or Europe.

Who wants to watch Ajinca trip over his own feet running up court all gangly-like this summer?
No one, that’s who, not even the Robertcats.
Summer league isn’t SUPER important but it’s nice to see your young guys play against their peers in a structured environment. With them trying to win because the records are kept and it “matters” more than just joining a run in LA or Houston.
For a team like the Roberts, who are in an eternal rebuild and always need to develop their young talent, summer league should be more important. Plus they can try out some D-leaguers and see how they work with their coaching staff and whatnot.
Oh well, we should just buy the Bobcats and take what we want and ditch the rest.
