Trade Theory
After reading everyone's trade ideas, it got me thinking that maybe there's a more fundamental concept about trading that hasn't been explored fully. I think everyone has a certain basic theory which they are using when they form an opinion about a trade. Here are some theories I could come up with. I'm sure there are more.
1. The "addition by subtraction trade" (eg. Zach Randolph/Channing Frye): This one is where a GM decides he has a certain player he wants to get rid of, and he goes out and gets the best possible player. This trade has a kissin' cousin which is sometimes known as the "Marcus Camby salary dump." It doesn't really matter why the team wants to get rid of a player, just that he must be gone.
2. The "value trade" (eg. Jarrett Jack/Jerryd Bayless): This one is where the GM has a couple tradeable assets (Jack, #13 draft pick) and decides to "maximize the assets". This is not really targeting a player as much as it is saying, "Here are player(s) that I am willing to trade. I'll take the best deal I can get." In this example KP moved up 2 spots to get a guy he thought was a value pick at that point.
3. The "target player trade" (eg. Al Jefferson/Kevin Garnett): This one is where a GM is targeting a specific player (KG) and is willing to deal half of his team, if that's what it takes. This is different from #2 because the incoming player is the one targeted, and the outgoing players are whatever is necessary, whereas in #2 the outgoing players are basically chosen to bring the best possible value of incoming players.
4. The "homerun trade" (eg. Bassy Telfair/Brandon Roy): This one is easier to pull off when Isaiah Thomas is running a franchise. This is the trade everyone would want, but you can't really expect KP to pull this off every year, can you?
By the way, I've been addicted to BE for about 2 years, but this is my first post. Thanks for reading and posting!

I think the way you worded that poll,
most everyone will select home run trade by default. Just a suggestion, perhaps instead of saying “what kind of trade are you rooting for”, maybe ask “what kind of trade do you expect will happen?”
Great post, really gives people another way of looking at trade philosophy. I really love your categories too.
"B-Roy is the best shooting guard I have played against"

If Artest can say it, so can I. Broy>Kobe.
my thoughts exactly
now you need to make your second post: trade post theory!
Please, for the love of all that is holy, please stop using the following: "Book it.", "FTW", "Epic" & "Fail".
...no seriously--stop.
Very nice post that makes you step back and reevaluate
I think the Bayless trade could be considered both a “value trade” and a “target player trade”. KP wanted to exchange Jack for a new point guard and make Blake the firm #1, and in the turn of events after Westbrook moved up a lot either Bayless or Augustin were bound to fall to a position where he could move to via trade knowing that Sacramento would otherwise take the remaining one before him.
What assets can we get if we throw Bayless into the mix?

Too bad Bayless wasn't the guy KP really wanted
Would have been nice to have picked up Augustin or Westbrook.
Though one has to wonder, if Augustin or Westbrook had been the player the Blazers got out of the draft, would they also be languishing behind Blake and Sergio, waiting for someone to go down with an injury? It’s one thing to have a meritocracy in determining who gets minutes, but if experience running the offense is one of the criterion used to assess merit, it’s sure tough for new players to crack Nate’s point rotation.
Bayless has about the same talent level as Westbrook in my opinion. Neither is a "pure" point guard.
He would have put up similar stats as a starter in OKC, except rebounding. It’s no wonder Bayless, Westbrook and Rose were compared since high school. I assume KP would have said nice things about any player they would have acquired, and no one knows for sure if Bayless really was the #4 on their draft board or if they really wanted Augustin or Westbrook. But now they do like him a lot. And in the end it doesn’t change a thing, we have Blake, Sergio and Bayless and have to work from there.
Options
Kidd – Still one of the best at passing & rebounding from the PG position. Better defense then Blake. This option makes Bayless the official PG of the future.
Hinrich – He is a very smart & pesky defender. Makes Bayless a scoring option off the bench
Ramon Sessions – Free agent. Would require a lot of money, could we spend it more effectively at another position?(SF?).
Mike Conley Jr – Trade. The option that makes Oden the happiest. Not sure what Nate thinks about PG’s being 6’1", but he seemed to like Chris Paul in the Olympics. Fits well with Roy.
Tyreke Evans – Move up in the draft. Probably McMillan’s ideal PG. Would be the biggest, baddest PG in the NBA, bigger then Rose.

Target Player Trade
We have Blake, Outlaw, Sergio, Bayless, Picks, Cash to deal with. He should look for teams that would want a combination of these assets and target specific players that he thinks would make us better.
He could also be high on a certain draft pick
but I agree. Consolidate our assets.
