TurkeyGlue? No thanks. What about... (Blasphemy?)

This is my first post so please be nice. I am a habitual reader of Blazersedge, but due to lack of time, and the quality of other posts I have never posted. I just couldnt help myself though. Finals are here and I needed a break so here it goes.

My Ideal Offseason Plan

Point Gaurd

Blake: While many people feel we need to upgrade our PG this season I feel that Bayless is the future and I dont think we need to trade away half the team for a small upgrade as we would have to do to get guys like Heinrich, Conely, Rubio, etc. I dont want to chew up all of our cap space for a small upgrade either-Miller, J Kidd, Heinrich again, Sessions, etc. So to me I think we stand pat for now and allow Bayless some court time.

Small Forward

Outlaw: Again many people feel Outlaw needs to go, but I dont believe that is necessary. Outlaw should not be counted on to be a starter, nor should he be our third scoring option. He has proven he cannot do either of these things on a consistent basis. Outlaw can be best utilized as a 6th man creating match-up problems at the power forward position. Outlaws production is great for what we pay him, and I dont think we can get that kind of production anywhere else for the same money.  Travis gives us chemistry, versatility, and he is cheap! Why move that?

TurkeyGlue: We already have a log jam at SF and I thought what we wanted was more defense and toughness, not a soft, ugly, no defense, guy who wants 10 mil a year. Thats all I have to say about TurkeyGlue.

Back Up Power Forward

Many BE's want to see B Bass, P Millsap, A Dice, or anyother smathering of FA power forwards. While all of these are great options for the Blazers I have a completely different idea. I love versatility and none of these options bring that.

My Option at Power Forward

LAMAR ODOM: Odom is perfect for this Blazer team. He can play Power Forward, he can play Small Forward, he plays defense, he rebounds, he can get to the rim, he can hit jumpers, he does everything we want on this team. I am sure many people HATE Odom for any number of reasons; he's a laker, he is "soft", he is an over paid TROUT, etc. I, however, feel that Odom would be perfect in the Blazers system. Imagine a 12 man line up like this.

Blake/Bayless/(Sergio or Draft Pick)Roy/Rudy/Webster                                                                                                                                                          Odom/Batum/(Outlaw/Webster)LMA/Odom/Outlaw                                                                                                                                                               Oden/Pryz

This line-up gives up tremendous flexability. We can play big; Roy at PG, Webster at SG, Odom at SF, LMA at PF, Oden at C. or we can play small; Bayless, Roy, Batum, Odom, LMA. Or any other combo. I dont know if the Blazers can even get Odom as I am not a cap guru, or any other type of guru, but if they could I would be extatic with this roster. I know that some people will say that we are already log jammed and this just makes us more log jammed, but I am of the mindset that you can never have too many good versatile players.

Anyways its off to study for finals what do you guys think? Is this even possible? If it were possible would you be behind this plan? if not why?

Good memory

I wracked my brain for about 15 seconds, then gave up

Pat Riley (who briefly participated in the 1970 training camp before leaving all miffed…) doesn’t really count…

I don't know that the two teams have ever consumated a direct trade.

It’s possible they never have, at least not for players. (I don’t think draft picks count for the purposes of this question.)

If they ever did, it likely pre-dates the 1977 championship. I will have to look it up in one of my media guides later on. For now, suffice it to say that Google returns zero hits for “trades between the blazers and lakers”.

Player for pick in 1984

Blazers sent out: Eddie Jordan
Blazers received: conditional 1985 third round pick.

In 1980, the Lakers gave up their second round pick (Jerome Kersey) for Jim Brewer.

1971, the Blazers got second round pick Ollie Johnson and cash for LeRoy Ellis.

So essentially, no real “real” player for player trades in history.

Oh yeah.

I completely forgot that Tracy came back and played a season for us.

Probably because he was such a total non-factor.

Odom has already said

he wants to live on the beach. I don’t think he wants to be a back up either. I just don’t see him fitting in with this team. Good thought though, nice first post.

Yeah I get that the Blazers and Lakers dont usually work well together, and while I dont know that odom would have any interest in Ptown I just thought odom was an intriging FA that hasnt been talked about yet

Wow, hair trigger on the post button today

anyway…

Wanting Odom isn’t Blasphemy, wanting K*be is. That having been said, I’m not really a fan of Odom’s (way too many bricked FTs in the 4th quarter)

I wouldn’t be UNhappy if the Blazers picked him up, but it wouldn’t make me run into the streets shouting KP’s praises.

Completely agree with this.

Odom wouldn’t be a bad fit on paper. Talent wise, he’s exactly what we would need.

But I don’t see him as being happy off the bench. He wouldn’t come here unless he was guaranteed a starting spot. And with all the other 3 players on this roster with upside, I don’t think you can make that promise to him and be very convincing about it.

No way we get Odom.

He loves LA. You say you don’t want to pay Turkey-Glue 10 million… well it is going to take more than that to get Odom to leave LA.

by Escrote on Jun 5, 2009 2:19 PM PDT reply actions

While It probably would take more to get Odom

I think Odom is worth more than Turkey. Do we have enough to get Odom, dont know, but if it is 10 mil to Turkey or 10 mil to Odom I would take Odom everytime

by TheSportsPsychologist on Jun 5, 2009 2:22 PM PDT reply actions

Odom = bannable language.

But that language is factually correct.

He is nothing like Trout on the floor, so I agree with you on that. Odom as backup PF? Would certainly work functionally.

I prefer Travis by an incomparable amount.

I vote no on your plan, prefer cheaper people like Bass.

PG

If KP believes Bayless is the “PG of the future” & is capable of becoming that, I think the smartest move is decline Blake’s team option & sign Jason Kidd. Still one of the best at rebounding & passing. Better defender then Blake. Provides a great mentor & will help Bayless’s all around game.

If KP thinks Bayless is more of a scorer off the bench like Vinnie “The Microwave” Johnson"(At the present time, might be a complete player down the road), try & trade for Kirk Hinrich.

If KP covets a PG(In the draft or on another team) go after them with all ya got; Blake, Bayless, Sergio, Outlaw, Webster, 1st round pick, 2nd round picks

Offseason:
PG Options:(T)Mike Conley Jr/(FA)Jason Kidd - (D)Rodrigue Beaubois/Toney Douglas
SG Options: (DDT)Terrence Williams
SF Options:(FA)Ron Artest/(T)Tayshaun Prince
PF Options:(DDT)DaJuan Blair/(T)Reggie Evans/(T)Carl Landry - (D)Taj Gibson, (D)Damion James, (D)Kevin Seraphin

by TheGreatDane17 on Jun 5, 2009 3:22 PM PDT reply actions

Did you read Dave's post this morning

Even after “renouncing” Blake the money available under the cap wouldn’t be enough to attract Kidd

A sign and trade is the only way to get JK, but supposedly Cuban wants him back

Maybe next summer, Kidd and his #1 fan Nate can “hook up” and Jason can provide that mentoring role

by two4larue on Jun 5, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Instead of Odom

How about the Blazers learn how to scout the later picks of the 1st round. There are some quality forwards available, Gibson, James or Seraphin. All three if I had my way. :p

Offseason:
PG Options:(T)Mike Conley Jr/(FA)Jason Kidd - (D)Rodrigue Beaubois/Toney Douglas
SG Options: (DDT)Terrence Williams
SF Options:(FA)Ron Artest/(T)Tayshaun Prince

You know, after missing Marc Gasol(Instead of McRoberts) in the 2nd, MbahAMoute(Instead of trading Omer Asik to Bulls) in the 2nd, Carl Landry in the 2nd(Instead of PetKo), Ramon Sessions in 2nd(Instead of Taurean Green), Paul Millsap/Leon Powe/Craig Smith(Instead of James White) in the 2nd,

Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley(T)/Jason Kidd(FA)/Tyreke Evans(D) - Pick one
SG Options: Terrence Williams(D) - If we lose Rudy
Forward Options: Reggie Evans(T) - Taj Gibson(D), Damion James(D), Kevin Seraphin(D)

Odom is making $14M this year and he is not thrilled being one of THREE bigs in LA. Guess what he would think about becoming one of FOUR in rainy Oregon...

Current thinking among Laker fans is they’re gonna pay the man. He’s happy there and they have a high payroll but also a wide revenue river…

Keeping Trevor Ariza is more sketchy. And Shannon Brown is the one you might be able to sneak away from them.

PG

I think it is highly questionable that Bayless will develop into the point guard that we desire. His outside shooting and distribution/passing need ALOT of improvement, and it would take at least 2-3 years IMO. So I really hope we try to upgrade the PG spot either this offseason or next. I believe that Hinrich could be the answer, but it would not kill me to see us stay with Blake for another year and see how Bayless develops. If he shows he can become the PG of the future fine, otherwise we need to look elsewhere. I do know that Blake is not the answer.

I think that with an upgrade at PG this offseason, along with some serious development from Oden, we could really make a strong run at things NEXT year….especially if the Lakers win the title this year, i.e. they will be less hungry next year, and Phil may even retire after getting his 10th title.

by socalblazer on Jun 5, 2009 5:59 PM PDT reply actions

I think we should draft more small forwards.

If there’s one thing any basketball genius will tell you it’s that you can never have enough small forwards. My ideal 09/10 lineup would be:

Trevor Ariza
Hedo Turkoglu
Travis Outlaw
Nic Batum
Luol Deng
Martell Webster
Kevin Durant
Paul Pierce
Travis Outlaw (again)
Tayshaun Prince
Shane Battier
Ron Artest

I think this would be an immediate championship team.

Life is hilarious.

ha. Add Turkey Glue and we can make this work.

Starting lineup.
PG: Turk Gleu
SG: Kevin Durant
SF: Paul Pierce
PF: Travis Outlaw (Homerism.)
C: Ron Artest (i know..)

and everyone knows we need stoppers at every position, not scoring.

the other team can never score because we stop them, and we can never score because… well.. we have defensive stoppers.

Turk

Funny how Blazerfans switch our flavor of the month so often. Conley, Sessions, Turkoglu, Heinrich, etc. etc.

I think we need to do something, but luring Turk away from the Magic is not our answer. The guy is a soft Euro that is terrible on D and really hasnt been a great player in the playoffs. He has just killed against some weak competition. Odom is going to dominate him. And at 10+ million a year, I would rather stick with Catfish.

If Memphis takes Rubio, I really think we have to make a push at Conley (trading T.O, etc.) and then either roll with Martell and Batum, grab a free agent SF, or trade for a quality SF.

The idea of Jason Kidd or Nash coming in as some sort of Mentor just seems stupid to me. They will want money, and they solve nothing long term and take away from developing Bayless or any other young PG. Blake is old enough.

BUT NO TURK. Watch this Finals series and tell me that guy gets us over the hump. No thanks.

Nice Post

Everybody wants to upgrade, but then everybody complains about the lack of minutes and logjams.

The only way to solve this is to trade or release a bunch of guys, as we already have too many talented NBA-level players. But then everybody complains that you are gutting the core of the team, which seems to be 7-10 players depending on how you ask.

Personally, I want a defensive stopper in their at PF, and someone with a low post game who rebounds hard on the defensive end. In other words NOT another LMA or LMA clone (Channing — love you but, man).

So, you upgrade, and they can’t see it. You keep Trout, and they can’t see it.

Odom is a really good basketball player. He understands how to play the game right. I think that he could be lured from LA as K*be is a cancer and Odom is underappreciated. I like the Odom idea, but I expect us to get a lower level journeyman 4 who can bang and gives us a different look when we need it in our offensive sets.

I voted

best idea yet.

You didn’t have an “interesting idea and it’d be funny to hear them call the names”.

Odom is a baller. Odom fits our needs. I don’t know that Odom fits the team. Still, I’ve been less than interested by other ideas out there, so I suppose i could classify this as most the best idea yet. At least at the SF position. The kirk idea is interesting too, and Snagging lee somehow would be cool.
