6/5/09 Junk Drawer : Congressman of the Year Edition

This Junk Drawer is dedicated to all the fine men and women who represent us in their role as elected officials.  Intelligent folks like Steve Cohen:

From Yahoo Sports

So Congressman Cohen says that the NBA shouldn't discriminate against guys who want to enter the league when they are younger than 19, huh?

It's a good thing that he personally isn't in a field with any sort of age restriction. After all, if an 18 year old should be allowed in the NBA, he should also be allowed to run for Congress, right? Oh, that's right, Congressman Cohen is himself part of the largest age-discriminatory profession in the nation!

Listen, Stevie, when you sponsor the amendment to the Constitution to get rid of all age requirements for Federal office, then we can start talking about how the NBA is reviving slavery by discriminating against 18 year olds.  Until then, please keep quiet.....

Feel free to make your own nominations for elected officials (and your own awards if you like) in this junk drawer.

We have the wisdom of David Stern on one side

and the wisdom of the founding fathers on the other.

What about an incentive program for NBA prospects to stay in college? For first round picks, just add a fixed amount (adjusted for inflation) for every year of college experience to the standard contracts they get and count college basketball experience like NBA experience for minimum salary for 2nd round picks.

I think the key is to make the incentive small enough not to discourage teams from drafting players with experience, but large enough to encourage those bubble players from declaring early. This would have little effect on surefire prospects who would go top 5 because they are already getting a pretty good contract. I think it would encourage the so-so prospect to stay in school.

As Stern stated in the Q&A after his State of the NBA address

players have 3 options, go to college, go to Europe or go to the NBADL. I am surprised that seemingly nobody has gone the 3rd route.

And that's their biggest issue

They have guys who the Lakers can’t guard, while the Magic has guys who can guard the Lakers, but the Magicses are soooooo dependent on the long ball that a 2 game cold streak will kill them.

Of course, if they are hot, no matter how good the Lakers play on both ends of the court, the Magic could win.

I think the Lakers will win, sadly, but if the Magic pull it off it’ll be a WIN for “matchups matter”.

I thought they kept him in far too long in the 1st half....

Its got to be hard to sit your all star pg if you SVG, even if he hasn’t played in 4 months. But the Magic’s demise in the 1st half from tied to down 10 or 12 at the half(whatever it was) all happened when Jameer was getting his run. Rafer has played good, if isnt broke don’’t fix it. I think SVG displayed way too much desperation by going that heavily to Jameer. Stick with the guys that got you there is what I always say….

The greatest U.S. Congressman in American history is Thaddeus Stevens (R-PA).

But you live off of government assistance

You need to get out of your parents’ shadow and go let your private enterprises take off!

by Mortimer on Jun 5, 2009 2:23 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nope, I live off of my family's own personal earnings; thus, "government assitance" doesn't apply.

Yet, that notwithstanding, Thaddeus Stevens was from an altogether different era. Stevens is an very important man in American history, too.

by AK1984 on Jun 5, 2009 2:26 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wow, I misspelled "assistance" here.

Y’know, that absolutely kills my credibility.

by AK1984 on Jun 5, 2009 2:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but it ain't YOUR earnings, thus you are living off of what your personal government has gathered

In this analogy your family is the governmental body you are living off of.

I don’t mind it, I jus’ teasin’ ya fun like again.

How do you feel about government funded educational loans and scholarships and the like? My family was dirt poor for generations and without them my parents wouldn’t be so successful. They simply wouldn’t have been able to afford any way to get out of the rut created by past generations.

I think it benefits society to have such scholarships

I am not for an intrusive government who punishes citizens for things they do to themselves that does not hurt others. I think government should be there to help, protect, and keep everything running smoothly.

There are many things I do not think should be in the hands of private enterprise or the free market. Education is already insanely expensive as it is. If you’re hardcore, and think police/fire shouldn’t be government funded, I think the idea is silly.

I don’t think it automatically makes one a jerk to put themself first, but I think you shoot yourself in the foot in the long run by not thinking beyond one’s self.

then there should never be despotic countries (e.g., China) — which exists under the guise of Communism, while technically being a Fascist nation — existing on Earth.

At times, it’s more valuable for the people at the “top” too keep the people at the “bottom” uneducated. That’s for their own survival, though, and definitely not for the betterment of society.

Mine is Gordon Smith

But not for his politics. When I was super sick from something in Morocco and was in a dirty hospital in Italy and no one spoke English, my pappy got Smith to call the hospital through the American embassy to make sure I was receiving adequate care.

Since they didn’t understand what he was saying, they misunderstood and thought he was my father, and I was an important senator’s son, so the hospital ambulanced me, sirens blaring and fullspeed, to a fancy nicer hospital with my own room in a bigger town an hour away.

So I say, thanks Gordon Smith!

civil sounds way better

than common law in my opinion.. but then again i dont think laws should be open to “interpretation”.. if they arent written correctly, rewrite them

by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 5, 2009 1:33 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

easier said than done I think

In one sense, the law should be solid and able to stand on its own without interpretation. On the other hand, law must be a living breathing thing, and legislation cannot be the only method by which laws are understood. What would be the point of the judicial system? If laws could be framed so that a computer to simply take input from a case and apply it to the law, it would take all interpretation out but I would have a bad feeling of where that would go.

by idoltime on Jun 5, 2009 3:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes to an extent I agree

but judges have way too much power in my opinion and quite frankly one of my issues with case law is that if one judge makes a terrible mistake it sets a precident for others to simply follow suit. However, am i strongly against judges “interpreting” legislation to meet the needs of a case they choose to preside over.

by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 5, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

yea, it's a tricky line to walk

I have a lot of respect for the checks & balances system. I want each branch to handle their own thing and not to be diminished in their capacity to do that. So while I don’t want judges to legislate from the bench, I also don’t want them to be merely executives enacting the law as written.

I am not sure what system would be best really. It is hard even to imagine something dramatically different.

by idoltime on Jun 5, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

it is, we are so conditioned

to think that our way is THE way, when there are actually other options out there. I understand what your saying, because their certainly are terrible laws out there that need to be overruled. Most recently is the statuatory rape law for a 17 yr old who sleeps with a 16 yr old, etc. However one of the issues with our system is that judges tend to go on to political careers and its in their best interest to make their rulings dramatic (while they may be correct, they certainly do show off)

by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 5, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You nailed the head on the thing I hate most about these systems

I really hate how politics as a career leads people. I really do not feel like people should even be allowed to have political careers. I understand the need for experience and expertise, but I really do not believe our system is made significantly better by having career politicians running the show and making their names forming or interpreting laws for political gain. I love the ridiculous idealism of the states(wo)man whose service to their country is merely part of the civic duty of an accomplished citizen.

The biggest problem with The Mighty Boosh

Is that it is a comedy that isn’t funny.

I like the look of it, the incorporation of creatures and puppets and crap, but it just isn’t funny. Creative sometimes, but not funny and the rest doesn’t make up for it.

I think you’re more likely to find Gervais’ version of the boss in real life, than the man-child immature somewhat-mentally handicapped Steve Carell version (though it is funny too).

I like Gervais’ stand up too… I can see someone not liking him though.

Batum can dribble pretty well for his age, size, and position

And he dished off nicely a few times.

Batum can dribble the ball up court better than Outlaw, Webster, and even Rudy. He has decent control… which, of course, is a prerequisite for point forwarding.

by Mortimer on Jun 5, 2009 3:57 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd debate Rudy if I wasn't so tired

He definitely has some signs of possibilities and has shown infinitely more dribble/passing skills then Outlaw and Martell. But I just can’t imagine Batum being even years away from running a pick & roll like Hedo can.

Yeah, it's not Hedo-EXACTLY

Just the potential ability to dribble the ball up court and initiate some basic offense.

Rudy can pass extremely well, no doubt, but his dribbling is shameful for a SG. I love his everything else so much that it makes me angry at him and I just close my eyes and imagine his hot breath on the nape of my neck and I say WHY, WHY RUDY WHY and I wake up to Mercury licking my ear.

by Mortimer on Jun 5, 2009 4:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is better in the open court

Than when he is stuck trying to create in the half court.

I remember being fairly impressed with his full court dribble game in the Olympics. But sometimes it is pretty bad when he gets stuck in a Roy-type position. Not sure what it is exactly either but I guess I’d still trust him more on a pick and roll than most of the backcourt (doesn’t really say a lot).

Rudy would have to put on about 30lbs of pure muscle before I’d amuse myself imaging him swing to the 3. Yea, no, my hope for Rudy is more that he’d develop the foot speed to not be a liability when playing by himself with Roy in the court. I thought Blake did great

But it’s also clear to me that we would like a 2nd playmaker next to Roy, which makes sense from the PG spot (he is careful and good with the ball, but not really a creator of offense), and someone who is much more athletic and as hard working on defense.

It’s hard to be mad at Blake, since he knows what to do and he WANTS to do it, but he just isn’t athletic enough.

Hinrich is quite a bit more athletic and quick, so he defends so much better both guard positions, and while not killer playmaker his better athleticism at least makes him better than Blake.

Blake would be the Joel Przybilla of backup PGs, wherever he goes of course. He deserves credit for a great season and being such a nice fit next to Roy offensively.

by Mortimer on Jun 5, 2009 4:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

absolutely

From that perspective, I can also understand the question about whether Hinrich’s upgrade is worth the massive increase in pay. Since it always felt like we were lacking people quick enough to defend the perimeter, I would say so. But it is tough – he’d be the highest paid player until Roy and LMAs new contracts went into effect.

Yeah, he's more expensive

But it isn’t an untradeable sized contract, nor a crazily long one. This is the last chance we can add a contract like that for cheap, and it won’t prevent us from retaining any of our guys or limit future flexibility since we’ll be over the cap no matter what after this offseason.

And, it ain’t our money.

Since it isn’t a bad deal we are stuck with against our will and it is someone we could really use, I don’t mind the pay increase even if it turns out he is overpaid still.

And the 'high-paid-guy-thing' prolly won't be a problem

Since this offseason is when we can sign Roy, right? For after this next season and beyond? He’ll know he is getting a max deal and is the highest paid dude, even if it isn’t kicked in yet.

Same for LMA if we make him his deal this offseason, whatever it ends up being… it’ll be higher than Hinrich’s.

by Mortimer on Jun 5, 2009 4:32 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The guy will be on 8 million when he is 30-31.

Those are going to be really good years for him as a PG. His athleticism may drop off but as a mature PG for this team in two years he will be perfect. And by then we should be serious contenders. 8 million, for a starting PG, playing at his best. That is cheap. So we signed a journeyman PG and got used to his cheap salary? Kirk Hinrich would be worth every penny.

The next day Mark Cuban would call Stern and say "you know, that Kidd trade, it was a joke, can we rewind that"

Sorry, doesn’t work that way. It was a decent chance to get the roster spot and the cap space which backfired, but if the Blazers wanted to have the expiring contract they should have sent Miles home with pay and let him keep that last roster spot instead of Shav or whoever. People might blame Miles for suffering a setback in his rehab and maybe never working as hard as possible on a comeback until last summer, but they can also blame KP for not gauging the situation accurately. At this time nobody would have traded for an injured Darius with $18 million left on his contract, at the next deadline somebody might have.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 5, 2009 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well you really should have

SCOLD.

I can’t really blame anyone for what happened. We got a guy with several bad injuries and no knee, so after a two year process we are able to have the various insurance and league-approved docs look it over and say that knee sucks.

It doesn’t mean Miles has to agree with the verdict, and he is free to do what he wants, which I am fine with.

What I don’t like, is that we followed the rules (as did Miles) but lose both a player and a contract and still have to pay it. It goes against the spirit of the law.

Previously I had thought there was an appeal process to prevent the money from going totally on our cap, but I think I am wrong.

by Mortimer on Jun 5, 2009 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting worldview from a Saudi acquaintance

She is very used to the Western World, graduate education in the UK, but doesn’t always feel comfortable interacting and competing with men. At home she says they have separate campuses at the university for men and women, and under less pressure the female students perform significantly better. Same in many companies.

Segregated schools for boys and girls, maybe even segregated work places? Emancipation by division? Sounds outdated to us. But she claims it’s better in many ways than being considered a “second-class” employee competing with men for more money and promotion as in many Western countries (but also say in Japan where some women have impressive job titles but little to decide until they reach executive level – which is still pretty rare).

I don’t necessarily agree, but it’s an interesting viewpoint.

It is not better for males

I avoided the all boys high school, but most of my jr.high friends all went to St. Auggie’s in San Diego. It didn’t help them at all; all six of them just became trouble making delinquents. I can’t say for sure that having girls around would help anything, but without girls to try and impress, it would be a step up to call the teenage male a “dumb beast”.

I had a feeling that it didn't work the same way with guys.

Last year I did an exchange program for a day at an all boys school and those boys were CRAZY. The guy I had to “shadow” all day took me off campus for lunch (against the rules) and we skipped a period. None of which was my idea. I see how boys are delinquents without girls around to impress.

Yeah, I'm of my own philosophy.

You and I certainly aren’t on the same page, however, although that’s fine by me.

Y’know, it’s our differences that make each of us unique individuals and whatnot.

Apropos of Ayn Rand, though, we probably dislike her for very, very different reasons. While I enjoy Rand’s individualistic bent on life, atheist leanings, and disdain toward altruism (i.e., the unselfish concern for others), her writings were much too simplistic and she tended to attract followers who were mindless fools.

Of course, I can’t exactly blame Rand for having fans who are crazy imbeciles; still, her philosophy hasn’t held up to the test of time. That’s unfortunate, too, since she had some incredible ideas by which to construct her beliefs, so here’s to hoping that someone can take from those and create a more refined philosophical outlook on life.

European schools are not always comparable yet

Many had diplomas that took 4 or 5 years to acquire. Then the education ministers agreed to introduce bachelor and master level courses (pressured by companies for a quicker education, and to make things more comparable), but many schools just initially re-labeled their diploma courses master. And some master courses take one year if you already have a bachelor and work experience in the field.

by Norsktroll on Jun 5, 2009 9:55 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

A discussion related to the issue up top...

What does everyone think of the European basketball system, where Sergio, Rudy, and Rubio all start playing in professional leagues as a kid? If this were introduced in America, would you support it?

On one hand, I really like the idea of a kid pursuing his dream as early as possible and making a living for himself and his family if he can. Imagine if John Wall or some other high school star started playing in a league like the IBL and getting paid for it.

Of course, we don’t want to ignore educating the population, so getting (some) education is definitely important.

Also, the two do not need to be mutually exclusive. As of now, people have to at least appear to prioritize education over physical training. Whether they’re actually becoming educated depends on if they’re cheating the system, like OJ Mayo or whoever was cheating on their SATs.

Oden and LaMarcus and Roy, oh my!

by Quik_Baller on Jun 5, 2009 9:55 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

To understand the European system, you need to consider that high school and college leagues don't exist in most states

Before "going pro" in Europe, if your talent is discovered early enough athletes in various sports can attend special sports schools/boarding schools financed by teams or a national olympic committee that allow for more flexibility and one-on-one tutoring to be able to align classes with intensive training from top coaches.
Many of the big basketball and soccer clubs have their own. Rudy and Rubio’s Joventut Badalona is such a team. They have strict educational requirements that their players in the various junior teams have to fulfill. If you look at interviews with Rubio, he is constantly stressing how important that is to him and his parents. I doubt he is less educated than a US athlete of the same age.

Several European states have not only one more year of high school than in the US, but also a multi-tier/stage secondary school system. So even if you don’t graduate from high school, you graduate from some lower school type in fewer years (e.g. at age 16).

There isn’t really an organized competitive system between high schools and colleges in most European states that is in any way comparable to the NCAA, even the lower divisions. I was a semi-professional track and field athlete, and not more than a handful of times did I compete for my high school against athletes from other high schools. In most sports you start out in amateur or recreational clubs, and stay there if they have the right coaches and facilities while attending high school or college in parallel, or completely go pro once you can afford it (in many states and sports e.g. as an employee of the military or border patrol with essentially no duty, e.g. very common in Italy, France, some sports in Germany, Russia). There basically is no layer between high school and "going pro".

The D-League might become an option for US athletes, which is heavily discussed over at Ridiculous Upside. But that depends on a number of changes, to develop it into something more similar to the farm system in baseball (incl. ownership of the players a team assigns there, direct or hybrid ownership of a D-League team by a pro team is still the exception, etc.). And while it has created a lot of NBA players as it is (about 20% of current NBA players have been in it at some time or another, Chris Andersen is a prominent example) it’s not yet the popular route to enter the NBA via the D-League or a European team. The draft is still mostly a college draft.

P.S.: It was Rose who allegedly cheated on the SAT. Mayo got money by a handler close to USC – allegedly to steer him in this direction

by Norsktroll on Jun 5, 2009 10:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting

Would those “boarding schools” be similar to the high schools in the US that recruit big-time athletes like Oak Hill.

Maybe the academic restrictions aren’t as tough, but they might parallel a bit.

But I guess the main issue I’m trying to address is being compensated to entertain. High school and college sports have large revenue, yet the players get none.

Oden and LaMarcus and Roy, oh my!

Re: Congress v. basketball

The comparison of pro basketball to the House of Representatives, while a clever rhetorical device, doesn’t make much sense, IMO. In the realm of basketball, there are arguments centered around the ability of an individual to pursue his chosen profession. But there are more important considerations when it comes to allowing someone to seek an elected office such as the House. We should desire members of Congress who are mature, knowledgeable, and hard-working, to name just a few traits — never mind that we rarely see them all actually embodied in any elected official. In general, a lower age limit helps to make it more likely that we will be represented by someone at least minimally competent.

"Just kidding"

by CatMan2 on Jun 5, 2009 10:34 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

add to that

that changing age limits for the legislative and executive branches would require a constitutional amendment and you can see why it might be easier to change rules regarding sport than government.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 5, 2009 10:38 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

People are already very wary to elect young people to these major offices. If you’re 45 you’re considered a young president, even though you’re 10 years older than the required limit.

Basically, I don’t think anyone under 25 or 30 would be elected to the House or Senate. On the super rare occasion that it did happen, you’d have to figure that the person elected would be some kind of political prodigy who deserves to be there.

by Zaig on Jun 5, 2009 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Okay, we should relax age requirements for Congress

as long as (1) we get to elect who we want to play on the Blazers and (2) we can trade our Representatives for future considerations.

"Just kidding"

by CatMan2 on Jun 5, 2009 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually, I consider the comparison to be a good one

How do you ‘qualify’ yourself for a stint in the US Congress? Typically, through experiences gained in life and perhaps in public service on a state, county or local level. The theory is that competence is gained not simply by age itself, but through the experiences and education gained through time.

Putting an age restriction on election to the US Congress does not mean that you are thwarting the career aspirations of an 18 year old. It means that you expect that 18 year old, if a career in politics is really what he/she wants, will pursue opportunities in preparation for the time when their age makes them a viable candidate.

Putting an age restriction on entry into the NBA does the same thing. David Stern and the league are not saying that an 18 cannot play basketball. They’re not even saying that he cannot be paid to play basketball. They are saying that there is a certain amount of time that must pass before he is eligible in order to ensure that he is prepared for that highest level of basketball.

by Storyteller on Jun 5, 2009 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fundamental difference

Aside from the fact that US Representative is not simply a “job”. Certain things require life experience — wisdom, if you will. This is why there are child prodigies in music, math, and chess, but they are extremely rare in fields where you have to know a lot about life to be any good. Examples: art, literature, clinical psychology, and — yes — government.

As for the sports side of this discussion, I don’t really have an axe to grind, but it does seem to me that there are double standards being applied, depending on where you live, what sport you play, etc. The NBA age limit does seem just a bit paternal to me.

"Just kidding"

Sorry, I just realized I didn't actually address your point

Frankly, I just don’t believe kids know very much about life or are mature enough to bear great responsibility. How old is a “kid”? Debatable, but there needs to be some reasonable answer to this. There may well be exceptions — “kids” who are experienced enough, mature enough, etc — but our laws do not take every possible case into consideration, nor do they need to. For example, there are no doubt people who are better drivers after having a few drinks than some other people who are stone cold sober. The DUI laws are not terribly subtle, however. That’s okay.

"Just kidding"

by CatMan2 on Jun 5, 2009 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

It's not the norm, but you can find young prodigies in any field

They might fail later in their career, like many child actor stars, but that doesn’t meant they never were good. Especially in fields that are subjective.
Art and literature: Picasso made early drawings that he probably considered crappy but other people today hang on their walls not lastly because he became a master. He created famous pieces before he turned 15 (picador, le mere de l’artiste). Durer and Da Vinci are considered child prodigies. The author of the Eragon series is very young, Anne Frank, same with some published poets.
Academics: I met a professor at MIT who rather should be in high school but he is an isolated genius in a specific field. There are quite a few others who got advanced degrees before 20 or even 15. Which was not all that unusual a few centuries ago when people didn’t live as long, many were doctors, architects and philosophers before being 25 in the arabic world.

Ricky Rubio is not the norm in Europe, he is the exception. LeBron, Kobe, Mayo, Wall, Jennings are also not the norm. LeBron likely would have been a better player after a year in college just by better training and by his body maturing.

It’s also not likely people would vote for a 21 year old President or Senator. But why shouldn’t there be a qualified candidate? There are many dumb politicians around the globe at age 40 and 50 that I would like to swap in a minute for a passionate 21 year old.

by Norsktroll on Jun 5, 2009 12:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed 100%

Yahoo had a story story about a kid who graduated with a degree in astrophysics at the age of 11. Should we put a minimum age on going to college just because most people aren’t ready/good enough until a certain age? That’d be insane, we’d be wasting this kids time.

By the same logic, it’s a waste of time to tell Lebron to play a year in college. Now, for 95% of NBA players, college is needed, but those those top end outliers like Lebron, college is a waste of time.

Personally, I see the same thing in politics. USUALLY, you won’t have the experience/skills needed to join the House/Senate before the given age. However, there are rare exceptions out there who just “get it” right away. We are keeping these people from trying to better our country because they are smarter than those people who want the position. It’s silly.

by Zaig on Jun 5, 2009 12:54 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Again, public office is not just a JOB

I don’t care about the fact that somebody might feel his or her career choices are unfairly limited because they can’t run for an office. I do care about trying to ensure that whoever is elected has at least some minimal qualifications. One of those qualifications is to know something about life. It’s not just about being smart. Kids just are not ready. Period. If you think this is unreasonable, then wait until you are at least 50 years old and think again.

"Just kidding"

by CatMan2 on Jun 5, 2009 2:42 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would still rather like a young politician who is passionate and intelligent with less experience, than one who has experience but sleeps or reads newspapers during debates and doesn’t read the bills. And don’t tell me those don’t exist, I have seen enough of them debate – or not because they were not prepared – on CSPAN, Phoenix in Germany, and other such channels. I understand why the age limit exists and it might not be the perfect comparison to a basketball player. But being in office is not a calling for everyone. For quite a few it’s just their job because being a lawyer or a union boss or a teacher (very common qualification for many European politicians) wasn’t interesting enough or didn’t pay as well.

by Norsktroll on Jun 5, 2009 2:56 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't by any means disagree with your assessment of many politicians

The trick is to elect some who are passionate and intelligent as well as having some life experience, not currently residing in prison, etc. Nobody said it was easy.

the show i do kind of like sometimes is the one where the parents set up dates for their kids and then they watch it with their kids’ current boyfriend/girlfriend.

it’s especially funny when the parents hate the boyfriend and make fun of him the whole time lol

I actually like the show Made.

I’m a pretty cynical guy, but it’s sort of nice to see children get a chance to improve their lives and gain some confidence. There was one with a girl who wanted to do BMX biking. At the beginning, she couldn’t land a simple jump off a small hill and by the end she landed a backflip on solid ground. I was quite impressed.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 5, 2009 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the quality of Made episodes is whole dependent on what the kid wants

Episodes where the high school loner wants to be made into the prom king/queen or the kid from suburban Denver who wants to be a rapper without putting in any effort are kind of lame.

The best Made I ever saw was where this kid wanted a date to prom. So they had a professional pickup artist (who may have been BRoyPosse) work with him to build his confidence, start talking to girls to meet more of them and when the girl that he had his sights on shot him down his couch helped him see that there are other fish in the sea who will like him for who he is.

The best one I ever saw was a guy who wanted to be a ballet dancer.

I’m not saying that just because it was ballet. The guy went to the Rock School in Philly which is where I went to ballet school last year. I wasn’t there when he was but his coach, Christopher Fleming is hilarious. He was one of my teachers and one time during the summer we watched the episode and it was amazing. He is EXACTLY like he is on MADE.

I think I stopped watching after the second season. But in the first one or so the basketball player was dope.

Playing against a Shavlik-type trainer who I can’t remember who was good in college and killed him because the boy couldn’t make a layup. Had him play against a fifth grader and such. Too funny.

I don’t know about it being mind-boggling per se. When you think about the adolescent “crisis” as being Identity vs. Role Confusion, and you consider the ever-increasing role ambiguity in a post-modern world… well, I guess I mean to say that I understand it. It is still frightening to think about these kids as the future.

I hope that too. I don’t think it is true though. I think most people (especially the younger ones) have a very hard time projecting beyond their own development point and their environment. And there are just so many examples of teens doing amazingly dumb things and even losing their lives over a phase in their life.

they are the most ill equipped group to handle the issues you bring up.

but those issues continue on throughout a person’s life. It’s not like role ambiguity ever clears up. It’s just all about coming to a place where you’re comfortable with yourself and with your view of the world. What is mind-boggling to me though is the lack of basic reasoning skills. Identity crises don’t have anything to do with basic common sense.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 5, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, it is the first point in which we face that conflict and, even though we do not resolve it before we leave high school, much of the adult that person will become will be based upon how they deal with it at that age. And taking on that kind of conflict without any of knowledge or experience or a willingness to listen to ANYONE who knows anything is just that much tougher.

I constantly have to remember who I am and that I am not who I was when I was 16. Even though I was totally lostreally cool at age.

i guess the sooner we all realize

we don’t know anywhere near as much as we think we know, the better off we could be. true for me anyway. I find the fact that I don’t really know anything rather comforting. All anyone has is their best guess I think, which is fine. The more people believe the guess, the more “truthful” it becomes. When all we have are representations we just make the most of it right?

by DrivetheLane on Jun 5, 2009 11:55 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

mad truths here

I can’t remember which greek philosopher spoke on the subject ( I suspect Socrates), but I am firm believer in these notions. I have always valued knowledge and sought to gain it. When I was young, I really thought I was smart and knew a lot of things. But the more I learned, the more I realized how much I don’t know. The wiser we are, the more we realize that most of what we think we know is just based on guesses and hunches – even solid ration argument and empirical research is a highly suspect for forming ‘absolute truths’ — whatever those might be.

lol!!

“Leave room for the Holy Spirit”

Know what makes NO sense to me? When teachers at dances would get pissed at people dancing front to back. Hello, are you stupid? Front to front clearly bumps uglies and is far more gratuitous. Old people! I swear!

Can I get a headband? One for my peeps, one for the fans in the really cheap seats, one for my momma, one for the mayor, and if you wanna get down with the players, YOU GOTTA GET A HEADBAND!
