Why Hedu and Kirk will work together
(apologies in advance if a Kirk and Hedu post has already been discussed)
Lots of rumors around the NBA pundits and posts around BlazersEdge about who the Blazers are going after in the off-season. Here is why I think KP is looking at bringing both Hedu (free agent) and Kirk (trade) to Portland.
Positive effects on offense (compared to last year):
-More playmaking options offensively with Hinrich and Hedu. Hedu in particular, is good in 1on1 and pick and roll situations. Hinrich is an upgrade over Blake in creating shots for his teammates off the pick and roll.
-Less predictablility, harder for defenses to prepare with more options on the court
-Still a good 3 pt shooting team with Hinrich and Hedu (Rudy and Webster off the bench, assuming Blake and Outlaw are traded for Hinrich)
-Way less wear and tear on Roy, keeps him fresh from start to finish
-Better execution in the halfcourt set with a spread out floor (multiple starters can hit the long range jumper. LMA and hopefully Oden can score inside)
Some quick negatives...less monster put back dunks from Batum, fewer fast break options with Batum out of the lineup, Batum's development is stunted with Hedu starting, M Webster's playing time will be insignificant.
Positive effects on defense:
Well...the biggest positive effect will be the fact that Roy will be able to devote more energy and attention to being an all around player for the Blazers. With Roy doing absolutely everything offensively for the Blazers last year for 40+ minutes per game, he didn't have the wherewithall to shine defensively. He came into this league with a very good reputation for stout defense and has displayed this in big late game moments over the years. Hinrich is an upgrade over Blake and gives the Blazers a very good defensive backcourt. Tough on the ball defender and able to guard quicker players as well as more physical athletes like Wade, Hinrich will be a nice addition on the defensive side.
Negatives...team loses bigtime quickness without Batum and still suffers from being a poor rotating team, suscitable to quicker teams that pass and shoot well. At least the bench will do better defensively with Bayless, Batum, and Pendergraph (4 yr college player known for tough defense) taking minutes from Sergio, Outlaw, and Frye.
Overall, these two moves taken together will make the Blazers a much better team offensively, capable of attacking the opposition from different angles. LaMarcus provides the lost post threat with dynamic perimeter players surrounding him, spreading the court and adding balance. Roy is saved some wear and tear and hopefully will reduce injury risk.
Defensively, the team will be better overall. Losing Batum from the starting lineup will hurt, but he was only playing 15 minutes a game last year anyways. The biggest factors that will help the Blazers on the side of the court will be Oden's development along with a more defensively engergized Roy combined with more defensive oriented players earning more playing time off the bench.
This is the makings of an up and coming team with an open window for the championship in 2009-2010.
Sound off peeps

If we take Hedo, Detroit has space for Gordon, meaning we don't get Hinrich.

yep
I don’t want Hinrich anyway, but this is too true.
that aside, let’s assume we pull this off. our rotation:
PG: KH, JBay
SG: roy, Rudy
SF: Hedo, Batum
PF: LMA, Hedo, Pend
C: Joel, Greg
looks like Martell is odd man out. if he’s still injured, so be it. but if not, we are wasting a reasonably valuable asset for the forseeable future. makes no sense. why not add another piece (Rudy?) to the trade offer and try to get a higher tier point than hinrich?
How did you guys win that?
"We scored enough points. We scored 107, they scored 105.

my thoughts exactly
It is looking like Det may get one of Hedo/Hinrich and we may get the other or vice versa.
Barrett did say one thing that did pique my interest
There is one scenario sitting there for Portland that I haven’t heard talked about that much. Being they have cap room, they could actually sign a player basically for another team, and then trade him to that team, giving each team the player they actually want. It sounds basic, and it is. But, when kicking around options, I just haven’t heard many people mention it.
Maybe we can sign Hedo and pair him with another asset to grab a bigger piece.
What are teams that need a SF, but are over the cap?
Collegiate stats:
NCAA Arizona:
Jerryd Bayless: 19.7pts, 4.0 asts, 3to
NAIA Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Terry Porter: 19.7pts, 4.3 asts, 2.33to

Hedo to Detroit for Prince, leaving them with plenty of cap space left.

This is the only way
that I would want us to sign hedo.
I prefer trading blake/filler for hinrich and signing artest, however prince would be a fine option and might fit better on offense. I’m not convinced he brings the same level of toughness that Artest was, and which we were lacking in the post season where a grizzly vet (artest, shaq, kg, kobe) could shine. Now, I don’t want most of those players, but Artest seems a big fan of Roy’s, and he might stay on his best behavior here.
Given our goal of developing young players, such as Oden, it simply does not make sense to acquire a bad defender at SF. I like having good defenders at SF and PG, since roy usually handles the ball and our PG and SF are primarily 3 point shooters. Our PG should be capable of taking pressure off roy with his ball handling, but that wasn’t blake’s fault. There was no suitable backup to let blake breathe in the post season. However, I think Bayless will develop much better under a different veteran PG.

Nice Post...
but I don’t see who’s gonna score with that second unit. Bayless, Rudy, Batum, Pendergraph, Joel. Seems like a lotta folks that stand around. Maybe they can all watch Bayless plunge into the middle.

Seems like Bayless and Rudy would score a bunch.
Plus Aldridge would be on the floor for big stretches with the second unit.

Why does Chicago send us Hinrich when we don't have cap space to help them clear and Detroit has signed Ben Gordon?
Hinrich and Hedo will not both be Blazers. There is no scenario where it makes sense for Chicago IMO.
Just say NO to Hedo!
Say yes to Hinrich, Harris or Sessions. Settle on Blake, Miller or Kidd if the first 3 are unattainable. Sessions is likely available for a price. May be more than we want to pay, but he’s available.

Chicago is trying to build around Rose
That means shedding salary. They can move Salmons to the 2 with Deng coming back and would have Blake/Outlaw coming off the bench with expiring contracts.
by tylerdurden on Jul 1, 2009 2:26 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think his point was that Chicago wants to dump salary immediately.
We’re looking at a PT mess already, so trading Kirk for 2 more guys who want minutes just compounds the problem for next season. Meanwhile, we might lost Ben Gordon if we can’t find an immediate way to make a good offer. So one strain of logic strongly suggests that a lopsided trade for Kirk is ideal for Chicago. If Ben goes, we’re far better off with Kirk backing up both guard spots than with Blake doing so – in fact, we’d probably have to sign another guard to back up the 2.
You’re right that it’s possible they do a trade anyway just for the expirings, but the Bulls already have a boatload of expiring contracts for next offseason.

Sounds like you might want Rudy and Bayless for Kirk. Yeah? – Elgin

Basically
We would be trading Blake and Outlaw for Hinrich and Hedo.
Two vets with good character, playoff experience, who can create their own shot and hit open jumpers if teams double Roy/LMA. Batum, Bayless and Rudy would still get time to develop and in 2-3 years possibly take on larger rolls when Hinrich/Hedo start to decline. The wild card is Martell who would need to prove he is healthy and compete for playing time but let’s not forget over an 82 game season it is almost assured that we will face injuries and depth will be important.

Ditto. Martel is for depth and explosive offense.
Batum is the key for growth, but if any 2/3 gets hurt, Martel will get added minutes.
Think of him as the new Channing Frye in terms of minutes if we get KH/HT,

We would be trading Blake and Outlaw for Hinrich
Assuming Hedo eats up the cap-space, you’d have to match salaries to pull off the Hinrich trade
Steve and Trav (aone) wouldn’t get it done, you’d have to add another salary, like Bayless
But if Detoit signs Gordon the Hinrich deal is gonzo. da-Bulls will just keep Cap’n Kirk

maybe Hedo is a signing to put in the trade for Kirk?
Now I’m getting crazy, anyone know what are the rules on that?

Your 2011/12 Blazers?
Name – (Age on 6/1/2012 – Playoffs) – Contract Status
POINT GUARDS:
Kirk Hinrich (31) 8,000,000 (LAST YR)
Jerryd Bayless (24) 3,042,280 (LAST YR)
Petteri Koponen (24) late 1st rookie scale (if on roster)
Patrick Mills (24) unknown (if on roster)
WING:
Brandon Roy (28) *16,000,000 (YR 2 of 5 extension)
Hedo Turkoglu (33) *12,500,000 (one year remaining)
Martell Webster (26) 5,226,782 (headed into team option YR)
Rudy Fernandez (27) 2,180,443 (LAST YR)
Nicolas Batum (24) 2,155,365 (LAST YR)
Victor Claver (24) late 1st rookie scale (if on roster)
BIG:
L. Aldridge (27) *10,000,000 (YR 2 of 5 extension)
Greg Oden (24) *10,000,000 (YR 1 of extension)
Joel Freeland (25) late 1st rookie scale (if on roster)
Joel Przybilla (33) unknown (1st yr of new contract, if resigned)
Pendergraph (25) unknown (if on roster)
Cunningham (25) unknown (if on roster)
*Edcuated guess
If both Turkoglu is signed ($8M + $10M + $12.5M + $15.6M) and the Hinrich for Blake/Outlaw trade goes through the roster would be fairly well locked in for the next 3 years – but certainly crowded at the 3. If somehow Web/Fern/Batum coexist in a back role for 3 years; decisions could then be made on whether or not to pay/resign Fernandez/ Batum and possibly bring over Claver or pick up Webster’s option knowing Turkoglu would have only 1 year remaining. Presumably, the verdict on Bayless on the heir apparent PG would be decided and one or two backup bigs would emerge out of subsequent years drafts or the out of today’s known picks.

I think Blake + Outlaw for Hinrich makes a lot of sense for both teams
And I think Gordon signing with Detroit makes that scenario even better for both sides. Their salaries come off the books and they can make a run at a big 2010 free agent next year.
I think they would have a legit shot at Wade, who remember is from Chicago and might want to move back there.
