Isn't three quality big men enough??? w/ poll
While reading through the fanposts it seems that nearly every other comment is questioning why we are not adding a backup power forward. The Houston series has apparently traumatised the fanbase to the point of doubting that our big guys (Joel, LMA, Oden) are capable of shouldering the load. I keep reading about how Scola did this and Landry did that. My take is that other matchup problems hurt the Blazers and forced our front court players to either help on defense or pick up cheap fouls. Clearly, the coaches decided that Scola was going to be the guy that beat us. Whether it was to help on a penetrating guard (Brooks or Lowry) or to double team Yao the game plan seemed to be that we were content to let Scola, Landry, and Hayes beat us. This led to many open fifteen footers for the power forwards. Also, Yao is (was) a freak. He is going to get any teams centers into foul trouble. Oden and Joel did not play there regular regiment of minutes because the refs blew the whistle every time Yao was touched.
In the playoffs LaMarcus did as he was coached. He can guard any of the Rockets pf's straight up. He also averaged 37.1 minutes last year. Where is this mythical backup "banger" going to play? KP believes in Greg. He believes that he has the talent to improve defensively and not pickup fouls at such an alarming rate. Whether that is true or not remains to be seen, but it seems clear that the organization believes in Greg. With that pair as your starting front court Joel is the perfect big man off the bench. He can guard fours or fives (He guarded the hell out of David West last year). The fact is Joel is the backup banger. Joel is the interchangeable big off the bench.
Additionally Nate seems committed to at times going small and playing either Travis or potentially Hedo at the four for prolonged stretches. This creates match up problems for other teams. It worked really well at times last year and it will probably be employed next year and in the future.
Where are David Lee, Brandon Bass, Chris Wilcox or any other decent backup pf going to play? There simply are no minutes to go around that would make spending our cap space on a power forward worth while. We drafted two power forwards to fill that minor role. The organization clearly does not see it as a priority and neither do I. Before the playoffs I do not recall spending a ton of time thinking about the backup four.
Look at the Lakers. They just won 60 plus games and a championship with 3 legitimate bigs. Bynam (if you can call him legitimate), Gasol, and Odom. Josh Powell and DJ Mbenga hardly played in the playoffs because their main three bigs took all the minutes come playoff time. Clearly we are following the same model.
Next season I think that both Greg and LaMarcus will improve. Joel will continue to play at an incredibly high level. Why do we need a big time addition in the front court?

Thank you for this different perspective
Good stuff. I’m of the mind that it would indeed be a good idea to carry a banger, but I don’t think he should be very expensive, and Lee, Millsap etc are basically out of the question. Really, our best option is to dig up our own cheap banger like other squads have been able to do instead of paying an already-proven one. Of course, that’s why I think we should have taken a flier on Blair; maybe Pendergraph will surprise me and fill those 10-ish minutes we don’t go small.

Pendergraph
That has to be the role they drafted this guy for. Plus, he and Cunningham were both four year guys who can come in and play a little bit as rookies.

Agreed,
Back up 4, IMO, was the main reason we picked up Pendergraph. I think he will do fine with 12 minutes off the bench. He will need to bulk up a bit tho.
Greg Oden - The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946

We need a banger
see what happened to Yao? 3 isn’t enough. 2 of them ONLY work at the 5, and 1 of them is completely abysmal offensively. Also, the Oden Przybilla pairing doesn’t work at all together. Meaning that if you want to be completely comfortable you need a 4th front court option, hopefully an energy guy off the bench that can board it well on both ends, muscle in against opposing front court players and score (any kind of scoring would be fine).
What we have here is a big gigantic hole that hasn’t been addressed. Along with point guard, I don’t see how we’re not dealing with our real problems. Hedo helps none of that. Our biggest problem is defense and in the first round we take an offensive minded (Hedo-like SF/PF) small forward, that helps us absolutely none on the defensive end, and we may end up falling that up with signing one of the worst defensive players in the entire league to a long and big contract that will guarantee our defense isn’t among the elite’s in the next 3-5 years? Give me some kind of sign that you didn’t just ruin this team. KP. You were so good for so long, we agreed on everything. Now you’re going to turn around and abandon me when you’re so close. I feel betrayed.
What happened to "in KP we trust"
clearly he likes his bigs. KP gets no leeway? DIdn’t we just draft two pf’s? What if one of them turns into Boozer of Millsap or Landry… all second round picks. I understand your thoughts at the point but I think you’re overreacting about the backup four. Also Hedo gives us ammo to trade other wing players. (Travis and perhaps Martell)
Its a garbage fit
just like the PF’s we picked given what was on the board were garbage picks.
KP and I have agreed for 3 years in a row on just about everything. This is a fall from grace. I’m not a “in _ we trust” kind of person.
I can’t believe the damage a lazy GM can do in one offseason. Nate inspired no doubt.
Its fine to say you disagree, talking about "damage" is a massive overreach
Going over the cliff based on not drafting and undersized PF with no ACLs and rumors of initial discussions with Hedo’s agent strikes me as a gross overreaction. Taking it further and saying the team is “damaged,” just makes no sense. “Damage” can only be assessed when we see the complete team on the court next season.
KP is not an impulsive guy. What until you see his strategy unfold. This may be misdirection or agent puffery. Hedo is not a bad piece, at the right price, but I agree with you that PG is the top priority.

In KP I trust
I do my evaluation at the end of the season, moves made translated in to more wins better team play. Further in playoffs then I wait. And Trust. Not blind but he has certain times I feel evaluation is needed end of season up to this point things are going great. I like feeling happy most of the time.

It is a little odd
How much KP/Portland seems to like euro SF.
At some point we need to beat the lakers with Odem, and Ariza.
Not sure Portland is tough enough to do that.
Won't vote in the poll.
There are never enough big men. But I think we could win a championship with these guys.
Didn't we draft pendergraph for this very purpose?
If we wanted another big body, I would prefer that we signed an aging 4 (a la kurt thomas) to the veteran’s minimum instead of going after a high profile free agent like Millsap/Bass/Lee. The eventual playoff rotation will be a 9 man rotation, likely with 4 guards, 2 sf, 2 centers and 1 pf anyway. That does not include this mystery backup 4 who we all suddenly want. Why would you spend more than the veteran’s minimum on a guy you are signing to be your 10th man?

We got a back up PF by committee in Pendergraph and Cunningham.
If either can play 8 minutes problem solved. Hedo could fill the time too. A higher profile player to play back up PF is ridiculous on this team. Experienced F Hedo and experienced G in Hinrich good moves with our C covered great in my mind with ODEN and Prizbilla we would be sitting pretty.

I like the way you showed F and G getting experienced new players. Also I trust in ODEN to dominated too.

Do we just keep giving lip service to adding veterans with playoff experience? Backup PF (on a reasonable contract) is a perfect spot for this type of player.
Pendergraph was a 2nd round pick… let’s hope he can contribute to some degree at some future point. It is not unreasonable to think that as a rookie he won’t get a lot of run. Show some talent in practice and in garbage time and earn the backup position next year.
McDyess, Leon Powe, Drew Gooden or a number of other vets on a near minimum deal would be better than counting on a rookie 2nd round pick.
3 is not enough! 3 might be enough if injuries didn’t occur and all 3 could play both PF and C. Add depth with a veteran backup PF PLEASE!!!
