The response of responses
Responses to some things being thrown around by people (both on and off BE) - NOT in preference order or anything, just a randomly numbered list.
1a. Hedo Turkoglu: I like Hedo and I think he could be a great addition if he was willing to buy into it being Brandon's team. Concede some of the ball-handling, work on his defense, and stand outside the arc and drop 3s all game.
This is not me saying I want him. I think we would overpay for him, so I'm not for it.
1b. Travis Outlaw: I actually agree with Canzano that Outlaw did indeed fail his test in the playoffs. Some people are correct in saying he was guarded by two great defenders (though Artest almost never guarded him, being assigned to Brandon whenever both were on the court). But that wasn't the only part of his test; he also failed miserably on defense, and not just in the playoffs. After 6 years in the league, I want to see SOME improvement on the defensive end. I was in the 3rd row behind the bench for a few games this year and Travis struggled a ton, and was visibly frustrating Coach Nate. That was the beginning of my frustration. But really, 6 years - he was drafted ahead of Josh Howard who at least showed vast improvement a couple times in his career, including being an integral part of numerous playoff runs.
2. Andre Miller: Love the guy. I think that he is a good fit for a couple of years. He doesn't take or make 3-pointers, so that is kind of a plus/minus argument. I think he is a terrific floor general (as evidenced every time he's faced the Blazers as a Nugget or Sixer) and excellent passer - perfect to feed LA, Gregzilla, Roy and Webby for open jumpers, so I'm less concerned about him taking them himself. Plus, he is - IMHO - the 2nd best (CP3) pg in the league at creating space in/near the post and making shots in the key. Great decisin-maker, great guy, great fit. I'd let him play here for 2 - 4 years and trade his expiring contract if/when needed.
3. Kirk Hinrich: His contract decreases each of the next two years, which helps counter the increases in everyone else's contracts. I do not WANT to pay that much for a guy who is only a low-medium upgrade offensively, though he is a much better defender. Blake struggled so much in the playoffs, just like Outlaw.
4. Jason Kidd: IF he would take the money to play for us on like a 2- or 3-year deal where we would offer to start him one or 2 years while mentoring Bayless/Mills/someone else and then take a backup role and/or be an expiring contract to ship to another team for cap relief.
5. Devin Harris: Abso-freakin'-lutely. Personally, I would trade anyone buy Oden, Joel, Brandon, Aldridge, Batum - and I would also include one but not both of either combo of Bayless/Rudy or Bayless/Blake because we would need a backup PG or scoring guard who can still handle the ball. But I'd probably consider it, still... and I'd even offer to cut off a limb to get that deal done. I don't have a single ounce of actual hope this will happen.
6. Steve Nash: I do not want him at all. His back is messed up and his mpg is bombing and I don't see any improvement in the near future. Also, his contract is way too big and would cost us too much talent compared to what we would get in return. We couldn't just get away with Blake and Outlaw. The only benefit I see is from a PR perspective.
7. Jose Calderon: Grrrrrrrrreat idea. But, like 95% positive it won't happen. Many people consider him top 3 pgs in the league. I think he's top ten, but his potential is hard to judge. I would trade Blake and Outlaw just for him, no questions asked.
P.S. We gonna stick with UPRISE? Or is it now CONQUER? I say we #CONQUER

RE: Harris
It’s gonna take both Bayless and Rudy to get him, but it’s very worth it IMO

What about Joel..
…in one of those guy’s places? Then sign David Lee, Antonio McDyess, or Chris Andersen. I like Lee, and think he would be happy in a back-up role especially if he got BOTH Joel and Channing’s minutes from last year.

convincing Lee to be a backup
would be difficult, IMO. he’s a graet talent who just pulled down more double-doubles than anyone in the league (Howard!?? Duncan!! Garnett, though injured, still!!)
the guy deserves to start, and he knows it.

I don't udnerstand how anyone can like Miller.
He shoots 28% from 3.
He’s not as good of a defender as Hinrich.
He’s 34.
He wants a 3 year, $30 million contract.
by JordanLeDoux on Jun 30, 2009 7:46 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
exactly, though i'm pretty sure we could him for less.

where it say $30/3 yr?
i haven’t read that anywhere. i even said he doesn’t shoot or make 3’s, that’s a known fact. his age doesn’t bother me since he’ll be getting phased out the moment he’s here. his d isn’t like hinrich’s, no, but it’s better than blake or at least the same.
by KraigEriginal on Jun 30, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
But why place him above Kidd? Kidd is the same age, a better defender, a better play maker, and can likely be had for just as little.
As for the 3/$30, that’s the reason Philly said they didn’t want to keep him. He’s been pretty open about looking for that, and I don’t want to be the team to give it to him.

this is where: http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/20090630_Andre_Miller_is_76ers__No__1_concern.html
via dwight jaynes.
he earned 10 mil last year I guess and just wants that continued…no thank you btw
The Blazers as a whole are far more like my wife than like me in the sense of their physicality on defense.

"one source said"
i’ve heard that he is willing and ready to leave PHI, and knows that the economy + his age could = mid-level type money. i’d gladly sig & trade him for steve blake for that amount – essentially upgrading steve for only $1-2 million. great plan

Jason Terry
Perfect fit although it would probally take Trout/ Bayless/ and Rudy
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010

Calderon
but Portland would have to get a defensive #3 PG like Dooling.
by parkinglotj on Jun 30, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
Dooling is a great mentor for young PG's
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010

My opinion
as much as I love imagining Devin Harris, or Jason Terry on our team we don’t really need either one, we need a back up PF/ C who can fill the role in 2010 after Trout Leaves and 2011 after Pryz Leaves effectively. Who could that be? Turiaf, Bass, Okur, Milsap?
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010
by jlarose78 on Jun 30, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
okur not opting out
and millsap will obviously take starter’s role and starter’s money if he can get it, esp. since boozer and okur are coming back.
and our need of a pg is not effected by our need for a backup pf. we need both.

We want a pg we don't need
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010
by jlarose78 on Jun 30, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
how do you figure?
you think blake is the answer for the foreseeable future with bayless in waiting? i think bayless will be more ben gordon than jason kidd. i want a real pg to tutor him/lead us for a couple years.
i’m not hatin’ on blake, either. i don’t wanna deal him if we don’t have to, but it just doesn’t make sense to keep him if we can upgrade.
by KraigEriginal on Jun 30, 2009 8:07 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes
I think Blake is more then adequate at PG until Bayless is ready, I still think Bayless has the potential to be a great PG/SG in the NBA along the same lines as Jason Terry not to mention Bayless can become a very pesky defender as for mentoring I think Nate is very capable of that.
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010
by jlarose78 on Jun 30, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
not disagreeing
cuz i think Nate is superb as a tall PG and stud defender. however, i don’t know that Blake is the answer. just a feeling that an upgrade is in order. i also just think that it IS going to happen, KP & Co running things the way they are. and i do think bayless is a gordon/terry/wade type player who is mostly great at slashing and drawing fouls (a la Wade) but i wonder about his ability to hit long-range shots and to distribute the ball without a high TO rate… legit concerns, no?

My favorite Line Up the Blazers Play
Roy, Rudy, Battum, Oden, LA – notice something?
Draft Cole Aldrich 2010
by jlarose78 on Jun 30, 2009 8:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yeah no PG...
and i think that lineup is a great 4th Q team, but the pace of a game is generally dictated by the best PG on the floor. i think that scenario would be FUN to watch (Showtime Northwest, anyone?) but would likely tire out Brandon… though Blake, Bayless, Webby, PF??, Joel is a sexy second unit. i could buy into that…
by KraigEriginal on Jun 30, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If there's any way to get Devin Harris I say do it.
Even if it would mean trading LMA. I would hate to see him go but I think getting Harris would be worth it. Then maybe we could sign Milsap to 10 million a year and have a devastating starting 5.
by dario argento on Jun 30, 2009 8:07 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
interesting...
i wouldn’t personally do that trade, because i think we’ve proven a great PF in the making is more worthwhile than a star PG without a big man – i DO have high hopes for Greg, but LA is already proven. can’t just send him packing.
by KraigEriginal on Jun 30, 2009 8:14 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Harris is not worth LaMarcus IMO. I’d rather have an on the bubble-all star power forward than an all star point guard. I’d be willing to give up Rudy and Jerryd for Harris.

not a bad idea
but KP tends to prefer “length over strength” so I wouldn’t hold my breath re: getting Bass or MIllsap
(he might be interested in Kirilenko though…that guy’s tall and skinny…and coyote ugly)
by two4larue on Jun 30, 2009 8:27 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would do that...
If we got Lee instead of Millsap, I’m pretty sure KP would be all over that too.

I like Calderon
but I have seen him play some horrible, horrible defense. Like really, really bad.
by twggyy on Jun 30, 2009 8:37 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
i've only seen him play thrice
once in a meaningless game when he was a backup, once was on tv for spain, and then i saw them play in portland this year. like most euro players, at least guards, his defense seems to be lacking.
by KraigEriginal on Jun 30, 2009 8:46 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
there are as many american guards with poor defense
as there are euro guards I’ve seen with poor defense. I think the Euro guards that come here are selected for exceptional offense, thats what stands out and makes people excited about them enough to bring over. I don’t think someone would see a guard in Europe with great defense and average offensive skills and bother to bring him over. Pietrus on Orlando played great defense in the playoffs, he is a guard forward, but I can’t imagine that all European players that are guards don’t play defense but forwards and centers do. That wouldn’t make sense. Ricky Rubio is known for great defense, I guess that will help.
I imagine that if you looked at all European guards you would find a similar rate of poor defensive guards as you do here.
If it is true, it won’t be for long.
by twggyy on Jun 30, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sorry about that
I don’t know why I went off like that. After all, I said Calderon is bad on defense, but it’s not because he’s european. Your post is really good.
I totally agree that Devin Harris would be the absolute best, I am bummed we didn’t get Sergio Llull in the draft because I think they are going to be very similar, and there is no way we get Harris.
I also completely agree about Hedo, just not worth the cost. I don’t see the fit.
I always like Miller, in fact I agree with almost everything in your post.
by twggyy on Jun 30, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
hahaha
well, thanks for the compliment there and yes Harris would be ideal but i’m not holding my breath.
to be fair, i did say “most euro guards” – and really, i’m willing to be wrong on that, but let’s face it, Rudy is a superior defender to most euro guards, his strength being psychic-like ability to read/predict passing lanes. euro big men aren’t really that well-known for defense either – they are just often good athletes and end up being decent shot-blockers which has a strange mask that appears as good defense sometimes (Pau’s not bad, but he’s not a “good defender”)
by KraigEriginal on Jun 30, 2009 10:35 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats true
I guess i just wonder, if you looked at all the player in European leagues if they would all be like that, or if its just the ones here.
Anyway, its the 1st when I write this, hopefully the anticipation will be over soon and we’ll know whats gonna happen!

I still don“t think Hedo is a good option
but if Nate aproves it then it will be fun to see the changes in our offense for next year.

exactly how i feel
i’m not pushing hard for Hedo – but we cannot deny that he is a great offensive weapon and it is super intriguing to see what happens moving forward
