OT: The Whitewashing of the Pacers
Interesting read. What the Blazers could have done after Jail Blazers era, but didn't. Remember the Draft the Stache campaign?

Terrible article.
It is simply an outlet to accuse Larry Bird of racism.
I’m pretty sure Bird would’ve taken Lebron, Wade, Kobe, and Howard if they had been offered for his apparantly miscreant blacks.
The bottom line is this is the NBA. Winning is what sells tickets. A plan of targeting white people would be unlikely to win as talent is not heavily concentrated in a minority group in the NBA. I really doubt, even if Larry Bird is racist, that he would put that above winning.

+1
Larry Bird might be a bad evaluator of talent, but to think he’s deliberately putting together his roster based on skin tone to connect with fans is laughable. These are what score points with the fans (1) good product and (2) good guys. If you have a crappy team with bad guys (e.g. the Pacers, the Jailblazers) nobody is going to spend money to watch that. Bird’s pitch is the same as KP’s was a few years ago – come watch our young, high character, hard working tam as it is rebuilding, not a racial play at all.

Factually he has a point that Indiana did employ a lot of white players, but it's an assumption to see a strategy behind it
There definitely is a strategy to get rid of players with off-court issues. Maybe subconsciously Bird thinks he will have less problems with some white kids than more Ron Artests and Stephen Jacksons and Jamaal Tinsleys. But in 2008 he drafted two black players, and his best player is black. So it’s not like the color was the major screening criteria. It’s not Adolf Rupp running Kentucky all over again.
