Around SBN: Win or Lose, Boston Celtics' New Big 3 Era A Success

Apparently, there may have actually been an offer for Shaq before the trade deadline. Reportedly, the trade included RLEC and Frye (no other major pieces mentioned). Sounds like a bargain (cap space and Oden-development aside) to me.

And that bargain would've made sure we were stuck over the cap with nothing other than Shaq

DO NOT WANT!

Khaq shouldn’t be bought out like a Khmer Rouge general. He should be crushed for his crimes!

Thank the Lord that didn't happen!!

Greg Oden - The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946

this was reported a couple days back

source was Shaq himself. My guess, based upon Shaq’s quotes on the topic, is that there probably wasn’t any official offer made, but rather Portland made initial inquiries to test the waters (as any good GM should always do), Kerr asked Shaq what he thought, Shaq said no, Kerr ended the talks.

How did you guys win that?

These story isn't new, but the details might be

Apparently, the putative offer was made before the trade deadline (not recently) and a few of the assets are mentioned (RLEC, Frye). The story is supported by a rumor circulating at the time about a possible Shaq-to-Blazers trade.

To be frank, a smart front office would've recognized collectively how asinine the idea of acquiring ...

Shaquille O’Neal was from the get-go. While there are teams that could’ve surely used O’Neal’s services last season — such as the Dallas Mavericks and, of course, the Cleveland Cavaliers — the Portland Trail Blazers had no need for him whatsoever.

It’s when information like this gets leaked out that I’m scared the Trail Blazers brian trust — and I’m using the term “brian trust” rather loosely here — will screw up royally these next few weeks by bringing in Hedo Turkoglu and/or Andre Miller, who are both past their prime and abysmal fits for Nate McMillan’s offensive scheme.

disagree

a smart front office explores EVERY option. If Phoenix was willing to give Shaq away for Rlec and Ike Diogu, we would be fools not to make the deal.

I would have done that deal.

20 million off the books for 2010 and Oden would have learned more in a year and a half from Shaq than he will in a lifetime with Mo Lucas.

I think the Playoffs would have been so different

Think about the Portland LA series, Kobe V Shaq
Then the Finals Old Superman Vs New Superman

C*mcast sucks!

Like I commented a few weeks ago

A certain Blazer legend who does not want to be named told me the offer was this:

Phoenix offered Shack and wanted Rudy + filler in return. I was told Blazer management of whom are 8 voites total voted this offer down 5-3.

Apparently Rudy was not happy here early on, and did not like Nate having him stashed in the corners, not using his skills.

Rudy wanted out, Blazer managementmade a few changes to make Rud happy and it apparently worked..

While I don't want to call "Heymoe's"

rep into question, I never believe comments that are along these lines. Maybe this is all true, but I am not going to lose sleep over it, and I am not going to picket outside winning way to get Nate fired because of it.

Agree with you 100%

But believe this, I did have a very long face to face discussion with one of our greats, as fate had it we were couped up on business trip together, just the 2 of us for 8 hours.

We covered lot of groud mostly about his glory days, the championship, all the way up to current events. This is exactly what he told me almost went down.

True? That I could not say.

(I love Nate BTW).

sounds like Schonley to me

5-3, huh? that’s pretty close. so the trust must be PA, Miller, KP, Penn, Nate, Chad Buchanon, Mike Born, and one more I guess

i would guess you're wrong

"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.

But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

This makes me tire of Nate.

Why, because Rudy was unhappy or because you think Nate voted against the Shaq deal?

Sounds like Nate actually made the effort to get Rudy “more involved” in the offense (by playing Brandon at the 3) and perhaps “bought KP some time” re" Rudys displeasure being made more “public”

It’s so easy to “hate” on Nate and say “if we had a different coach” things like this would never happen. But I’ve been through every Blazer coach (all the way back to Roland Todd) and I can tell you it’s wrong for the GM to bring together two young, talented players who “must” play the same position, like Roy and Rudy. It’s not a matter of “if” but “when” one of them will have to be moved along.

The better choice is to have young stars and older role players on contending teams. The old vets will know their role and shut their mouth and be more interested in “team” and winning than earning their next contract or how many shots they’re getting or what kind of “style” suits them best!

Rudy seems like a real nice guy, and Brandon is a terrific kid. But there’s only 48 minutes/game to go around and I don’t expect Nate (or the next Blazers’ coach, whoever that is or whenever Nate’s gone) will play keep playing Roy at SF to make room for Rudy. Not unless KP wants to deal Batum and/or Webster and commit to a “3-guard” starting lineup. Last year’s stats may favor the Roy-Rudy combo, but long-term that lineup is not going to be the answer to the Roy-Rudy “dilemma”

The final solution lies with KP. He’s got to do with Rudy what Geoff Petrie did with Drazen Peterovic, back in ‘91. Trade Rudy (before he starts making noise about “wanting out” of PDX) for a veteran who has experience and won’t whine about being a valuable reserve on a championship ballclub

by two4larue on Jun 30, 2009 7:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm telling you...

Rudy is not long for Portland…just wait until Webster and Batum develop and “steal” the SF minutes away from Brandon and Rudy starts getting “shorted” for PT…it will be Sergio Rodriguez and Drazen Petrovic deja vu

these logjams and conflicts are so easy to see coming, it’s just human nature, really

by two4larue on Jun 30, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

yep

which is why im warming to the idea of including rudy in a trade for a major PG upgrad (and no, Hinrich does not qualify)

How did you guys win that?

Harris or Rubio

I presume?

I wouldn’t deal him for Kirk, either. But I sure hope KP doesn’t try to string Rudy along for 3 years like he did with Sergio, and then try to “make nice” between Rudy and Nate whenver there’s a “flair-up” re: PT or playing style…because it’s a “no-win” situation for all parties concerned as long as Roy is playing 35+mpg at the same position as Rudy

BTW, it’s the GM’s job to anticipate and “fix” roster logjams, not the coach’s. If KP just keeps stockpiling talent with no regards to chemistry and logical rotations, then we’ll be heading down the Whitsitt road, again. Too much depth can become counter-productive

by two4larue on Jun 30, 2009 6:53 PM PDT up reply actions

agreed

we’ve sat and waited for 2+ years.

Sergio’s trade value was at it’s apex after his rookie year. now we had to pay a team to take him for next to nothing
Outlaw’s trade value was at it’s apex after last year. Now we won’t get near as much for him.
Frye had trade value about a year or year and a half ago, now he’s walking for nothing.

stockpiling young assets won’t amount to a hill of beans if we don’t flip them for something we need. Otherwise, who’s next to rot on the vine? Rudy? Batum? Bayless?

How did you guys win that?

KP's got to grow up

That’s all there is to it. He’s been great as a collector of talent and a corrector of culture. But his next “stage” as a GM is more subtle and even more important. He’s got to “thin the herd” and be willing to “let go” of his assets (great young men that we all genuinely like, as people) and put together a team that has both young players and veterans who collectively have the skill and experience necessary to win multiple playoff series.

Just “letting the cake bake” isn’t good enough, you’ve got to have a “berka” or two (Dave’s term) who know the path up the mountain…so the rest of the kids can follow and learn how to win. Joel and Steve can’t do this, alone. And as good as Brandon is, he could use a “little help” as well

It would be wise because this site is looked over by things like ESPN.

Just PM him and it will disappear and we can all forget it.
