We don't want no stinking FA PG

Last week, I put up a poll with all of the non-"untouchable" PGs and asked who you'd like to see as our starter next year.  I don't know how many people are on BE, but I'd think that 319 votes would be a statistically accurate sample.

The main lesson (to me) was that BE readers really don't want any of the free agent PGs who are out there.  Andre Miller barely beat out Jason Kidd, but both were way behind the top 4 (Devin Harris, Captain Kirk, Ricky Rubio and Rajon Rondo).  They were also behind Steve Nash, Calderon and Bayless (??!!??).

So KP, we have spoken, and we want a trade. (But for me, personally, I wouldn't give up too much for Captain Kirk, as I don't think he looks much different in our system than Blake.)

- I was a little surprised that Russell Westbrook got so few votes.  I believe that people don't have him in their heads because there is no trade talk around him.  Perhaps he belongs on the untouchables - or is there no interest in Stumptown?

I'm not sure your conclusions are valid

Asking for an ideal isn’t the same as asking what the Blazers should do, especially with the vote so diluted by having twenty choices.

A better poll for your purposes would be one that asks:

Would you rather have the Blazers trade for a PG then sign a FA?

1. Yes, and do only that, no FAs, period.
2. Yes, but if we can’t make it work, get a FA.
3. No, I’d rather have one of the FAs.
4. No, I’d prefer not to trade or get an FA – ie, stand pat.

That would definitively answer the question. And as I said, the results may not be what you inferred from your poll.

My conclusions are certainly full of holes

There are quite a few methodologies that could have produced a much clearer picture of what the BE readers would do in different situations.

What was clear was that the guys who are available as free agents aren’t the first choice of many BE readers. We may have to pay too much, or not be able to pry them lose, but it shows people here would prefer that we at least explored some trades.

agreed

Rather than dissect the system in which the information was gathered, i will appreciate that for it’s purpose—checking views on FAs vs other options, it got the job done. Yes, I’d rather see bayless starting next year than miller. Don’t want no miller. I want DH, but don’t think he is available for an acceptable price. Therefore, I’d be happy w/ hinrich, who I think would add good defense. If Sarge can control artest, I think hinrich + artest, moving blake would be our best situation. (I don’t advocate moving outlaw until we know webster’s foot is 100%. He can cope with some bench time, it’s a business and we aren’t giving him up when we have the right to keep him and see if we need him)

Point Guard attainability/desirability

Want but can’t get:

Chris Paul
Tony Parker

Doubt we can get but should make an offer as long as it doesn’t gut the team. Great fits…

Devin Harris
Rajon Rondo
Russell Westbrook

Good fit and obtainable

Hinrich
Blake

obtainable, upgrade, but not sure about fit

Sessions
Miller
Kidd
Nash

Hard to get, upgrade, but not sure about fit

Brooks
Stuckey

Unproven

All point guards drafted this year…

The rest I don’t want.

I notice you included Blake.

No Bayless? I would put him in unproven with the rookies.

Hinrich is also a significant uprgrade

he’s a role player (which is what we need at PG, Roy being the top dog), attainable without giving up much, good shooter, great defense, adds toughness.

he's an upgrade, most would agree

significant upgrade? I’d say that is definately up for debate

How did you guys win that?

maybe not, but his defense is significantly better than Steve’s

Sessions is the only Free Agent PG I'm interested in

I would take him in over Blake in a heart beat! Many see the role of the Blazer PG to play defense and shoot 3 pointers. Ridiculous! The job of a NBA PG is to help teammates get high percentage shots. Miller does this pretty well. Kidd used to do this shockingly well and is still able to perform at a reasonable level. They just don’t fit the Blazers window. Our window could be next year, but whenever it starts it ought to last for 8 years!

If we can’t swing a trade (Hinrich or Harris) I will be very disapppointed if we don’t sign Sessions to an offer sheet. If the Bucks match…FINE! At least we took a run at him. Then I don’t care if KP settles on Miller, Kidd or Blake!

guards

I don’t see Andre Miller as a fit at all. He is a bad shooter and can’t guard a quick point. If we are to get better, we better find someone who can guard Tony Parker, CP3, and Brooks. Houston may fall off the map without Yao, but Spurs will be good. Hinrich is somewhat of an upgrade from Blake, and probably the only guard on the market at all. Even that is not for sure, now that Gordon signed elsewhere. More than likely Bulls would want Rudy now, because they don’t need Blake, and they have Deng and Salmons at the 3. If New O won’t trade CP3 now, lets see if he is available mid season. He has that goofy poison pill contract right now, that makes it almost impossible to do a deal financially anyway, maybe halfway through the year we can send Rudy, Blake, Webster. We need to use Outlaw now to get a like-priced back up 4, like Turiaf or Brandon Bass. We need another Big with experience.
