Possibly The Worst List of All Time

This is possibly the worst list of all time. NBC Sports created the Top NBA draft busts of all time list. Here are the top 10:

  1. Sam Bowie
  2. Shawn Bradley
  3. Greg Oden
  4. Kwame Brown
  5. Michael Olowokandi
  6. Adam Morrison
  7. Todd Fuller
  8. Jay Williams
  9. Joe Smith
  10. Bryant "Big Country" Reeves

So let me get this straight, they picked Sam Bowie as the #1 bust because he was picked 2nd and had bad career because of injuries?? They picked Sam Bowie over Kwame Brown and Michael Olowokandi? Those two just plain suck and they don't have injury excuses. Jay Williams made it in the top 10 because his career was cut short by a motorcycle accident??  By the same criteria, Len Bias should be #1 bust because he died and did not play one single game!

They picked Greg Oden over Kwame Brown and Michael Olowokandi after just his FIRST SEASON???

WHAT ABOUT LARUE MARTIN???? He is not even on the list!!!

UNBELIEVABLE.

Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Putting Greg Oden on this list right now is like calling President _ the worst president ever when he’s been on the job 18 months.

Where’s Chris Washburn? Or Ed O’Bannon? Or Dennis Hopson? So many more dubiously deserving candidates than this bunch.

The only ones I’d include on my list are Kwame and Kandiman. And in a few years, assuming he doesn’t miraculously develop an NBA game, the Stache.

by Calzone on Jun 29, 2009 2:25 PM PDT reply actions

wow, that is lazy

no way Oden, Bowie, or Williams belong on this list, injuries can not be for seen. And all 3 of these players were good when they actually played.

Brown and the Kandi man are the only 2 I would pick for my top 10.

No one remembers

that the ’84-85 all-rookie team included Bowie

Michael Jordan, Chicago
Hakeem Olajuwon, Houston
Sam Bowie, Portland
Charles Barkley, Philadelphia
Sam Perkins, Dallas

Bowie

Sam Bowie had a long and decently successful career, and did it with class and without ever wilting under the pressure of not fulfilling being picked ahead of the GOAT.

Bowie was in no way shape or form a bust. He just got picked ahead of a guy who turned out to be a much better player. The same could be said of dozens and dozens of high draft picks over the years.

Oden after playing 1 year is just plain lazy.

How did you guys win that?

Is it not true that Oden had the highest PER of any rookie last year?

Greg Oden - The only other rookie with more than 500 points, 400 rebounds, and 65 blocks in under 1400 minutes played. Since 1946

Bowie was definatly a bust

anything compared to Jordan who he will always be linked to will always be a bust.

LOL

Darko was their #21 with this comment

Although it may be too early to consider Milicic a bust, he was selected before Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and Carmelo Anthony.

lol ya too early for Darko to be a bust, but not Oden.

I totally thought the same thing.

I guess 6 season of Darko is inconclusive but 1 season of Oden tells us all we need to know. Plus I find it funny that they had almost identically productive season

http://www.nba.com/playerfile/darko_milicic/index.html
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/greg_oden/index.html

and yet the jury is still out on Darko but case closed on Oden. Absolutely ridiculous.

by RipCityRoyCity on Jun 29, 2009 4:43 PM PDT up reply actions

I dont think they were in order

just a list of 32.. and yes they are way outta line with Oden

by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 29, 2009 2:51 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I agree

I think it was just a list of draft busts in general. Indeed, Robert Traylor, Kurt Benson, Telfair, DMiles, etc. are also on the list.

by erastus25 on Jun 29, 2009 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Players aren't busts based on more productive players being drafted after them

If you want to call a player a bust because a more productive player is drafted after them, there have been a lot of very productive busts in the NBA. It’s the GMs who failed there, not the players. But you’re right, the slide show is crap. Calling a player a bust after one season is a joke.

by baduk on Jun 29, 2009 2:58 PM PDT reply actions

a little early on Oden...

Definitely, we’ll see what people are saying a year from now when he has played a full season.
How can they put Oden so high on the list and then not even include Len Bias?

Telfair is a bust at 13? That's not exactly top 5 or even top 10.

Where’s Roy Tarpley?
Patrick O’Bryant?
Any center drafted by the Sonics in the last 10 years?
Ike Diogu?
Keith Van Horne?
Adonal Foyle?
Christian Laettner?

And if you’re throwing injured players in there, how about Jonathan Bender and Shaun Livingston?

Koponen - PG of the future. For Italy, that is. Book it.

Something Interesing

Here are the last three ROY PER:

18.08 PER – 2007 Brandon Roy
15.87 PER – 2008 Kevin Durant
16.05 PER – 2009 Derrik Rose

Compare it with this:
18.18 PER – Greg Oden

Are those three ROY busts?

by Balian on Jun 29, 2009 3:22 PM PDT reply actions

If Greg had been able to play more minutes he would have been in contention. The foul trouble was his biggest issue this year.

by danielfarrell on Jun 30, 2009 7:14 PM PDT up reply actions

They are trying to bash down Greg to make him lose his confidence

That’s why we always see these ridiculous type of things coming out. Oden will be laughing at the end of next season.

I have to agree that Bowie gets way to much S for being a bust

He can’t help it that Jordan was taken after him. To me the only two criteria in considering a guy a bust should be draft position (ie judge all the No. 1’s, No. 2’s etc. against each other regarless of who was taken before or after them) and that combined with how their career panned out.

by Escrote on Jun 29, 2009 3:56 PM PDT reply actions

You also need to take into consideration

hype surrounding the player. Like Kwame, he was supposed to be amazing, and then just fizzled, so he is more of a bust than Darko because he was never really upsold to the general basketball world until Dumars drafted him.

Darko was insanely hyped before that draft, and was listed as a likely #2 pick and long-term project. Dumars chose a player who was heavily hyped, as opposed to the player being hyped because Dumars chose him.

The rationale behind this list is totally flawed

All it seems to be is a list of picks who had better players picked behind them…I would bet that one of the players picked in the top 3 this year will end up being significantly worse than a player picked after them (Rubio, Curry, TWill all have the potential to make earlier picks look like busts). This does not make them a bad player or a bust…..it just means they didn’t pan out.

Ridiculous analysis and a complete lack of originality or logic.

Plus the Oden/Milicic hypocrisy is just laughable
