Trade Drawer - 6/29 - kick 'em while they're down edition

Just saw the post that Yao is most likely out for next season and may be gone for good.   If this is true, Houston may want to blow up the team and start rebuilding.  They don't have many assets that folks are going to want so why don't we target Aaron Brooks

Of course if we're going to get Aaron Brooks we're going to have to give them young talent and take on a bad contract.  The only really bad contract they've got is Tracy McGrady

So how about McGrady + Brooks for Pryz, Blake, (Rudy or Bayless) and Trout?  This should just about match salary-wise.  Houston get's marketable young talent and a starting center.  We get a starting point guard for the entire length of our run.  Sure McGrady isn't a great fit, but he can play the same role as Rudy played and he knows how to play with a dominant center so he'll be good with Greg. (If Houston's truly desparate then we go for a signed and traded Channing instead of Pryz).

We would still need to track down a backup C/PF but there should may be a few 7' stiffs wandering around the league available for our trade exception.

Line up:

Brooks/Bayless/Roy

Roy/ McGrady/Webster

Batum/Webster/McGrady/Roy

LMA/Free Agent/Pendegraph

Oden/Free Agent

One of Houstons biggest complaints about T-Mac is he didn’t play all that well alongside Yao.

I saw somewhere

That during the draft the Rockets were willing to part with Battier and Brooks for Rubio which tells me Battier could be had for the right price

I’d far rather have Battier than anyone on Houston’s roster. Maybe they will want to cut his salary to save for the summer of 2010. Bosh might want to go to Houston…. he’s a Texas guy.

Battier and Hinrich would make us a legitimate title contender THIS YEAR, and we’d be able to retain a lot of young talent for another run in about four years.

Am I the only one left on BE that doesn't like Aaron Brooks?

Yes, he absolutely lit us up in the playoffs, but he typically doesn’t play anywhere near that level. I really don’t see him as an improvement unless he gets significantly better.

I agree 100%

Brooks is a decent little player, but one series and BE acts like he’s Tony Parker 2.0. He is most assuredly not. I would take him if he were really, really cheap (he would be ahead of Bayless on the depth chart, for sure), but if our PG1 isn’t significantly better than AB in a couple months I’m gonna be ticked.

You know what's really funny about your numbers

is I watched 6 games of Blake versus Brooks, and it WAS a blowout in Brooks’ favor. He dominates Blake in every way on the court.

by as11osu on Jun 29, 2009 2:58 PM PDT up reply actions

I could not disagree more

Brooks dominated a stretch of game 1 against Blake, but after Houston was already well in control. Game 2 was essentially a standstill until Brooks went nuts from deep in the final minute, again with the game basically decided. Blake outplayed Brooks in games 3, 4 and 5 before struggling in game 6. On balance, I do think Brooks had the better series, but saying it was a blowout in Brooks’ favor strikes me as ludicrous.

I’m 100% in the “let’s upgrade at PG camp,” but Brooks is not a guy I’d target. He’s a below average PG and already 24 years old. I don’t see him ever being a top 12 PG in this league. Top 15 is his ceiling IMO.

I'm not pro Brooks

but my thoughts on Brooks v. Blake stand. Brooks doesn’t fit on this team for all kinds of reasons, but it’s not because of him in comparison to Blake. I don’t think Brooks will ever be top 20 point guard, and probably not even a guy that deserves to be a starter quite honestly. I just think it wasn’t prudent to compare regular season numbers, as they have very little to do with why people like Brooks. The fact that we’re even talking about Brooks speaks more to Blake’s lack of ability than anything else.

by as11osu on Jun 29, 2009 5:15 PM PDT up reply actions

He also torched Fisher in LA

I’m not saying he’s a top 5 pg, but he’s an upgrade to Blake and he has the # of several Western Conference playoff teams.

Brooks is a one playoff round wonder

I think he could be good someday but he is vastly overrated at the moment

now if we could get battier or artest.. im all for it

Brooks over Blake anyday

remember you compare their stats and Brooks only started half the season he is only begginning to blossom as a point guard and a player in this league. He is better than Steve Blake, and quicker which gives us an advantage to run and he can drive an dish to greg. He would make our team alot better unlike Steve Blake. He is a northwest guy from seattle played at Oregon. I am all for this and maybe instead of McGrady we get Battier (it would be difficult) as long as we dont trade brandon LMA Greg and Rudy were good.

McGrady + Brooks for Pryz, Blake, (Rudy or Bayless) and Trout? This should just about match salary-wise.

McGrady is due to make $22,483,124 next year add Brooks’ 1,118,520 = 23,601,644

Przybilla 6,857,725
Blake 4,000,000
Outlaw 3,600,000
Bayless 2,143,080

16,600,805 add 7 mil of capspace and you can have Brooks and the TGEC!

Not my idea of a great deal, but thanks for playing and drive home safely!

by two4larue on Jun 29, 2009 9:57 PM PDT reply actions

How about Battier for Przy straight across?

I can’t get the ESPN trade machine to work, but their salaries are really similar, so I think it would work.

They’re going to be desperate for a decent big guy after losing both Yao and Mutombo. (btw, Houston fans, that really sucks and i feel for you.)

There aren’t very man centers available in free agency. In fact, the only true center I see on HurraKane212’s One Stop Shopping list is Zaza Pachulia.

We would give them a starter-quality center and superb defender and they would give us a great perimeter defender who can hit the open three.

We’d have to look for a backup center, since Oden isn’t reliable yet. So maybe we sign Pachulia. He makes way more sense as our backup than as their starter.

I’d hate to lose Pryz, but not as much as I’d love to welcome Battier.

Also, brining in Battier might make Webster a movable commodity….

by LicketyBrindle on Jun 29, 2009 10:18 PM PDT reply actions

We'd have to get rid of a SF or two for that to work

I mean, having one center and four small forwards?

And even then I think the loss of Joel and stunting the growth of Martell and Nic is worse than getting Battier is good.

I’d really like to have Shane Battier, but not for Joel Przybilla.

by austinpwnz on Jun 30, 2009 2:31 AM PDT up reply actions

I just cant stop saying it.

Trading Pryz would be the downfall of this team. We really underrate his importance. I would never trade Pryz for Brooks, much less with T-Mac thrown in.

Tracy would cause a giant knot of minutes to deal with, I dont want to go to all that trouble just to aquire Brooks. I do like his game though, but Hinrich has to be target number one.
