Solve the PG situation - make a run at Kobe
While everyone is stressing out over Miller, Hinrich, Kidd, Sessions, Blake, etc., why not solve our PG problem by sliding Roy over to point and signing Kobe?
What do we look for in a PG? Penetration and drawing fouls - Roy can do that. Outside shooting? Yep, he can do that too. Defense? Well, that's not his calling card but he isn't worse than Blake. Assists? He already does that as a SG!
Kobe is likely to opt out of his contract. Would he take $12 million/year to play for the Blazers? Doubtful, but I thought I read somewhere that Portland can get further under the cap by renouncing Blake and Outlaw's team options.
There are some things in Portland's favor:
1. A good, young team that could challenge for a ring if Kobe signs. Think about it - the biggest hurdle in the WC is the L*kers, and they've just lost the heart of their team if Kobe goes to the Blazers.
2. Phil is just about ready to hang it up. If not this year, then next. What does Kobe do after that? Will Rambis or Shaw take the L*kers to the championship? If he signs a long-term deal with the L*kers, he has no control over his future. Right now is the only control he has.
3. Kobe has a lot of respect for Nate and has praised him on multiple occasions. He might like playing for him.
You don't have to worry about Roy carrying the scoring load anymore, either.
A lot of people don't like Kobe. I get that. I dislike the L*kers more. It would be so cool to take them down a notch by stealing their best player. They would hate us forever! What an awesome rivalry that would be!

Thanks a lot.
I just threw up all over the floor and now I have to go find something to clean it up. Besides the fact that Kobe already said he’s 100% staying with the Lakers, how does this solve the PG problem? Why not just have Roy play PG with Rudy at SG and then we could avoid selling our immortal souls to Satan and whatnot?
I’m mostly just joking. I’m sure Kobe would make this team better and if he was available and I wouldn’t blame the Blazers for taking a look. Still, it’s just not a real possibility. I can’t see him leaving the Lakers right after winning a championship.

Look...I love Trevor Ariza....But $32-$40 million?!? That better be a 16-year contract. --Dave

Nate is more likely to go to LA than K*be come here.

Roy is not a PG
I’m going to say it again. Roy is not a PG.
He is a very good shooting guard. He is good at ball handling and distribution, which are guard characteristics (not just point). He really excels at scoring. It takes a lot of effort to score consistently like he does. Running the point and guarding the point takes a lot out of him. He’s human- barely. He needs to conserve his strength to do what he does best on offense. That means giving him a bit of a break the rest of the time. Is it late in the 4th and a close game? OK, sure, put the ball in Roy’s hands. But let him take it easier the rest of the game.
Rex is a starter by the 2010 trade deadline. Watch.

Yup
I’ve been saying this for quite a while now and will KEEP saying it.
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

No Kobe in 2009
He has terrible team chemistry, he wants to be the one to get the credit for everything. Who would shoot a last second shot. It should be Roy he has earned it and shown a consistent knack for knocking it down but Kobe would go Crazy if he wasn’t shooting most of them, even though he isn’t as effective as Roy is in making them.

As fun as it would be
It is a waste to think about. We have a greater chance of landing Lebron in ’10. And that is far and away out of the realm of possibility.

Norsktroll had a similar idea back in May.
Link.
But as much as Roy has the ball, he’s not a good PG for this team. When Portland has tried this last season, the results were rather poor. Roy at the 3 is a much better option. Kobe at the 3 would work as well. I’m not really against getting Kobe. But I think it probably doesn’t happen. No one will be able to pay him as much as the Lakers can.

Kobe Bryant will someday retire as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers.
That’s not a bad thing, either, because it’s nice to see a guy stay with one team throughout his entire career.
The same exact thing applies to Tim Duncan with the San Antonio Spurs, too.

Two, but the first stay wasn't very long. :p

Yeah, Tim Duncan gets an extra tip of the cap due to Kobe Bryant being drafted by the Hornets.

only due to a technicality at the time...
preventing the Hornets from actually trading the pick to the Lakers. They instead did what the Lakers did this year in the draft, making picks for other teams they already had an agreement with to trade for.

I think we could win it all with Kobe
BUT, they would be Kobe’s championships, and not Portland’s. I’d hate that.
I could not blame management for doing it either. Kobe is mad overrated, but he’s STILL Kobe.

I think you're right
A Kobe championship would just feel wrong. Luckily the Blazers don’t need him. Kobe turns 31 this year. He’ll be ready to retire in 3 years, and he’ll probably be traded back to Charlotte or something. By then, Brandon will be 28, LaMarcus 27, Rudy 26, Greg 24, Jerryd and Nic 23.

ready to retire at 34?
not unless he wins every championship from here until then. I very much see him turning into an older 3 point specialist sniper once his legs and quickness have completely left him.

My "pat" answer to this line of thinking
If KP ever acquires K*be Bry*nt, I foresee two possibilities. One, Blazer fans coming face to face with K*be in a Portland uniform would put all of Rip City into shock and we’d simply pass out. Or two, the encounter could create a time paradox, the results of which could cause a chain reaction that would unravel the very fabric of the space time continuum, and destroy the entire universe! Granted, that’s a worse case scenario. The destruction might in fact be very localized, limited to merely our own galaxy.

Sorry I forgot to turn on the sarcasm font when I posted. ;)
Love to see the Kobe reactions, and I love all the “let’s go get this guy” posts.
