About Ricky Rubio

I have not made a comment or a Fanpost in sometime, but I had just got done reading about how getting Ricky Rubio would be a good player to get for the Blazers. I am just writing this with 1 simple thought in mind of why he would not. So many comments have been made about him now, and rightly so, but so many of them are how Ricky Rubio is someone who "Get's everyone involved" and a "Team Player" but I'm almost certainly sure that he is not.So I'm coming out of the woodworks to give you my thoughts on the matter.

He has made comments through his agent about not wanting to play in a small market. Now I'm not going to rag on the guy for wanting to improve on the situation where he plays, but if you wanted to just play ball on a good team with other talented players, would you Really be concerned with where you go? Your in the NBA bro, the best of the best!

Shawn Marion doesn't care where he plays just as long as he's the man and gets paid. Joe Johnson doesn't care where he plays just as long as he has good teamates. Ricky Rubio doesnt care where he goes to just as long as there's lots of people and He gets noticed. To me, that is an issue, and it most likley speaks to his immaturity more than anything else.

I know it's a very simple but it was something that was on my mind. Thoughts?

Go Blazers!

I totally agree

Talent or not, I just don’t want him on our team. Unless he the media is portraying him in a very negative way and he’s actually a unselfish kid. I never read about him and think, hey I like this guy.

I agree as well.

Here is a comment I made on a previous post regarding whether or not we should try to trade for Rubio.

don’t know if that’s his bad english or what, but it’s not cool

As a spanish guy who is used to spanish people learning english

I can translate that into:

“Every player has his own playing style, me included”

His english is good enough to understand most of what he hears, and to make people understand him, but if you’re looking for something to talk against him you can find lots of quotes you can take out of context.

i figured it was bad english

but the way he said it (tone, inflection), came across as pretty arogant. If i would have read it it probably wouldn’t have meant anything but hearing it, it sounded bad

And we don’t need another all-star. ?

by LaoTzu on Jun 28, 2009 4:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah...I think that's taken somewhat out of context

The question was who does he think he plays like. He wasn’t boasting, just trying to say he wants to play with a unique style without useless comparisons.

Dictated, not read. The management.

No one is like him

that’s why he said no one is like him. Its the same line a dozen other rookies have been saying when compared to great players. Lots of top picks use a line very similar to that.

If I were him

I would’ve said “I’m like Yao Ming” and then done that eye thing the Spanish team did during the Olympics. Because I’m a showman.

by Garden of ODEN on Jun 28, 2009 9:46 PM PDT up reply actions

That's somewhat out of context

I was watching the draft when he said that during his interview. He was asked to compare himself to another current player. It wasn’t like “I’m Ricky Fing Rubio” it was more like smile, shrug, “there’s not really anyone like me playing in the NBA.” That’s how it came across to me.

Think about from his perspective though. He’s going to be making basically no money the next two years in salary and so he’s saying that he doesn’t want to be playing for a perennially crappy team for free.

by KitIsh on Jun 29, 2009 12:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Ricky doesn't care where he plays

as long as it is in a situation that would allow him to pay for his buyout and leave him in a good long-term situation.

Buyout is 6.6M$, 5th pick salary 2year guaranteed is around 7M$, around 4M$ after taxes.
I’ve read that he’s willing to play for free for two years, but in this case, he’d have to PAY 2M$ for the honor to play the first two years of his NBA Career.

If he has a car crash and can’t play anymore, he’d find himself with a 2M$ hole and without a basketball carreer.

You wouldn’t do that for a job, but expect him to do it because he’s an entertainer…

He’s looking for a situation that would give him some kind of safety net, and the best way he’s found is endorsements, which come when you play for a big market team. Had the Wolves traded up to 2nd they wouldn’t have this problem now.

Nobody expects a Spanish Acquisition!

I don't think Rubio is a bad kid.

If you have a problem with what he says, than Rudy must be an absolutely conceited loser.

His money situation explains everything. It appears he has an agent similar to Sergio’s though. Someone looking to stir up trouble and make a name for themselves.

by staylost on Jun 28, 2009 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions

The buy-out offsets the income for taxes

So he likely pays a smaller income tax and keeps some.

by lee3022 on Jun 28, 2009 8:52 PM PDT up reply actions

He's a team player on the court

anyone that’s ever watched him play the game of basketball can tell you he’s as team oriented as any prospect his age that the game has ever seen.

So ya, when people describe him as a team guy, and a guy that gets everyone involved, they’re talking about his on the court skills. And that’s where the game is played… on the court. Getting Ricky Rubio helps you win games, and does so for the next 10-15 years.

If you’re willing to pass up a franchise point guard because he wants to play where he can make a profit (not play for negative money, or free) than you’d basically pass up every single player in the history of the NBA. This is your last buy low opportunity on Ricky Rubio, because as soon as he hits the court his price will double. Just like Devin Harris and Mike Conley before him. Go get the kid, and settle the final position we need to make our championship run the next 10 years. The price and time is right.

It was fun to watch

And after I watched it, I followed a link to this one:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLb9FDF0rpA&feature=related
It was even better. Rudy is a high flying stud. And did you notice who was dishing most of those to Rudy? A young kid named Sergio Rodriguez. He looks great in highlight clips, doesn’t he? It really makes me wonder how much better Ricky really is than Sergio.

Wow!

Rudy is the real Spanish gem. Everyone else from Spain is just surrounded by his hype.

Except for that Sergio guy in the video. Man! He is amazing. Could we get him? He could really get our offense to be more fluid than just doing a bunch of isolations.

by staylost on Jun 29, 2009 7:28 AM PDT up reply actions

I hear you can get him cheap

All it takes is dropping a few spots in the 2nd round, and you even get cash back!

I think this shows 2 things. First, it shows that any decent player can look awesome in highlight clips. Second, it shows that the NBA is tough. It’s a lot easier to look like a rock star in Europe or in college. The NBA is a different game.

Does bring up a good point

it seems that the Spanish players are allowed to play with more flair are do not play with their hands tied. On the other hand it could mean the NBA defense is a lot tighter and there’s not as many opportunities for those insane passes.
All in all most of those Sergio highlights were back door cuts by Rudy whereas Rubio was creating on his own so I give the nod to Rubio.

Rubio is attainable

Portland can make a deal with Minnesota that will make them better. I’m not sure if this is what we should do or not, but it’s doable.

The magic piece of the puzzle is probably Przybilla. They need a center to play next to Al Jefferson, and Joel played (I believe) at U of Minnesota. Should we take a chance that Oden can play 30 minutes a game? It seems like it would make sense to get Kevin Love in return, and we would go small on our 2nd team. There are so few true centers in the NBA anymore, why not? It would encourage Lamarcus to go into the lowpost.

They don’t really need Travis. They have Ryan Gomes. Maybe Travis could fetch us some SGs from somewhere to help them out. Stevenson on the Wizards has started in the past.

I’ll leave the salary-mangling to others.

It might hurt to to give up Joel, but last season was his first one unhurt since he’s been a Blazer. If he gets injured again next year it would not be a surprise.

So there’s lots to think about if we want Rubio. But he’s there to be had if we do.

I think it's less about Minnesota and more about draft position.

And nothing to do with weather. Drafted fifth means that he can’t pay for his buyout as well. Plus, Minnesota isn’t exactly known for their endorsement opportunities. (Snow™, brought to you by Ricky Rubio! ) A trade to a larger city would probably present more opportunities for capital. Heck, even Portland has Nike, they pay pretty well. But even though he said that he’d play for free, I doubt he’d be interested in taking out a million dollar loan to do so. I know I wouldn’t. I probably would be interested in being introduced to the local fans either.

His agents screwed up. Rubio screwed up. They wanted the money. They wanted endorsements. And assumed that either the Clippers would bite, or Sacramento would pick him up if he fell. So they avoided Memphis and OKC. Backfired big time. So Rubio’s NBA career is put on hold. At least until something can be worked out where he can at least break even.

Would I want him in Portland? I wouldn’t complain if it happened. I can’t complain about a guy trying to make the most of his situation and having it fall apart on him.

I can’t imagine anyone, bar none, not having a favorite place they might want to go,

or even a few top choices. Would you, me, or anyone not have a few, and also have some places we wouldn’t want to go? How many athletes from any sport after being drafted have said this is the place I wanted to be all my life – we don’t knock them for having a favorite place, but knock then do knock them if they don’t land in a place of their choice.
With the some of the bad attitudes that currently exist in the NBA, it’s not even remotely possible in my mind to put Rubio in that conversation. He’s 18. I think this is all media hype re his attitude and I’ll wait for time to prove me wrong – but I’m certainly not going to worry about it at this stage in his career.

I think Bayless would have gone in the top ten in this draft

So lets tradeJB and Travis for him?or maybe that aint such a good idea?

by southern oregon on Jun 28, 2009 10:41 PM PDT reply actions

I think thats a viable idea.

Considering JB is more fit as a combo guard and would fit better in their system. But good luck with them buying on that.

They would be in effect trading Miller and Foye for Outlaw and Jerryd.
