The PERFECT Free Agent For Us

Everyone is giving suggestions on what free agent point guard/small forward we should sign. I have a different approach. Lets not sign a small forward or point guard free agent. With Channing Frye leaving, we should concentrate on getting an EXPERIENCED backup PF. Who is the perfect candidate for us?

Chris "The Birdman" Andersen

20.6 mins 6.4 pts, 6.2 rebs, 2.46 blks, 18.16 PER

With the limited amount of minutes he got in Denver, he was AMAZINGLY PRODUCTIVE. He gets 2.46 blocks a game for just 20 minutes of playing time! He is a tough defender and likes to bang. He is happy to come off the bench playing either power forward or center.

Imagine a lineup of:

  • Hinrich/Bayless (I am 50:50 with Hinrich - he is a defensive upgrade to Blake)
  • Roy/Rudy
  • Batum/Webster
  • Aldridge/Anders2n
  • Oden/Pryzbilla

Reasons for getting The Birdman

  • We need a backup PF/C with some toughness
  • He is a very good defender and is happy off the bench
  • Relatively cheap. Anderson won't demand $10 million per year(Unlike some unnamed TURKey free agent)
  • The Nuggets would be a magnitude weaker(our main division rival) without him and we will be stronger defensively

I know some of you are questioning his character and that he would not fit the "culture" of the Trailblazers. It is true that he has a colorful past. However, I think it also speaks a great deal of his character and perseverance to came back from being kicked out of the league to being a very productive member of a playoff team.

I know some of you can't stand him. But make no mistake about it, Chris Andersen provided energy and toughness for the Nuggets. He was part of the reason why they were so successful last year. And I can't stand him for that. However, I will stand up for him if he is on our team. :)

In the least if KP makes an offer to Chris Andersen, it will make the Nuggets spend more money. And that is a good thing. Chris Andersen is an unrestricted free agent which mean we can offer him anything we want and Denver is over the salary cap.

Unrestricted Free Agent

Anderson is 30 yr old and this is his last contract. Now he said he wish to resign with Denver, but come on. It doesn’t take that much more money to sign him. A contract of $21 million for 3 years will do. If anything, it will make Denver spend THAT much more to keep him.

Maybe it's just me...

but 7 mil per year for a back up 4/5 sounds like a lot.

by Furious Styles on Jun 28, 2009 11:40 AM PDT up reply actions

That's way too much

He’s not worth $7 million per, no matter what the TNT hype-train said. He’s gonna get abused playing against the bigger centers and doesn’t do a lot to create offense on his own.

Also, he’s a fan favorite in Denver and sells tickets/jerseys there. He’s not moving.

by ninjasocks on Jun 28, 2009 11:52 AM PDT up reply actions

Just a High Bar

It doesn’t have to be $7 million. That figure is the amount we can spend under the salary cap. I am all for signing him for less.

If you're going to write a fanpost about him..

you could at least spell Andersen’s name correctly. Just a suggestion.

Yes

I should be burn to the stake for confusing Andersen with Anderson. It was an honest mistake but thanks for your snotty contribution.

judging by his signiture,

he’s on grammar patrol…

I would complain about your creative spelling of "singature" in a comment about grammar

But then I would probably make a typo in the process.

OT: Billy Mays dead at 59 (probably had from going to sleep with a concussion). The guy seemed really obnoxious on his informercials, but was a lot more likable on his reality show, The Pitchmen.

I'm down...

I understand we don’t want to go back to the “jail blazers” and bringing him in could conjure images of that… however, it’s not so bad to have a mix of people, and our team could use a controversial figure, ala dennis rodman to give us a tougher image.

I dont see him as being controversial

To me he seems like more of a comeback figure then anything else. He isn’t generally wild or out of line. The worst thing ive seen with him is showboating after a block.

I think he would fit well here. He seems to oddly fit in the culture. The only problem is I dont see Denver letting him go. He seems like the Denver version of Rudy.

Only way I'd consider this as reasonable

is if Przy was part of a trade to get someone amazing in the backcourt. He would need to do more than replace Channing to warrant that price to steal him. I’ll admit that Birdman backing up Aldridge and Oden has an interesting flavor to it, although it is hard to really imagine the offense of him and Oden playing together unless one of them can reliably hit a 10 footer.

Best fit for Portland

As a back up PF the Blazers need McDyess he could also back up the 5 spot if Greg and Joel get in foul trouble.

IF

If you think a 36 yr old PF on his last legs a perfect fit, then I am speechless.

Correction

He is 34, not 36 …same difference.

If Shaq was willing to play 10 mpg for the MLE, I'd grab him in a second

Big men are able to remain competitive longer than smaller players (assuming their legs and backs hold up) because they rely less on speed and more on positioning and balance.

Please NO

He is my least favorite active player. Every time he gets a block or a rebound he has to stick out his tongue like he just scored a touchdown in the superbowl… Buddy, I hope you get a block or two in a game, they’re paying millions and you don’t score!

Sometimes I feel like I'm going in different directions...

by porterfan30 on Jun 28, 2009 4:30 PM PDT reply actions

Totally agree, but it won't happen

he was almost as important to the Nuggets as Chauncey. He would transform our bench into a defensive unit, especially paired with Bayless and Oden or Pryz. Rudy would be able to gamble more as well. He can play at this level for at least 3 more years, but how will he deal with success? That’s the part that scares me.

During the Nuggets' playoff series with Dallas he was out for a bit with "flu-like symptoms"

I was a little worried that he might be dealing with a relapse (due to the stress of success, the playoff environment, the spotlight, etc). The man has an inspiring story (until you heard it 10 billion times during every Nugget playoff game), but I imagine he still has personal demons he’s got to fight.

I might be a little nervous about him once in a while, if we were able to steal him away from the Nuggets, but I don’t think his personal problems are a significant reason not to sign him.

Maybe it was the Bird-Flu

Bad joke, I know.

Looking it up on google

Most of the hits were about the bird flu

by ninjasocks on Jun 29, 2009 10:57 AM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind signing him

but that wont happen because

a.) He’s only worth 5-6 mil a year.
b.) He’ll get more than that at Denver.
c.) He wouldn’t get enough minutes to justify the paycheck.
d.) Denver would not let him to go a division rival.

All aboard the Kirkwagon!

I love Birdman and I’d be down to see him in a Blazer uniform for sure, but last time I checked he wants to stay in Denver and they want to keep him.

Birdman!

Yes!

I would love the Birdman on the Blazers, he is a ridiculous shot blocker.

I’m screaming BIRRRRRRDMAAAAAAAAAAAAN…. KP CAN YOU HEAR ME!

"I can Shavlick my own balls."

I Can't Agree Enough

I’ve been eyeing him from a bird’s point of view since the playoffs. I knew it wasn’t going to happen though. He’s committed to Denver.
