Hill, Mcdyess and Hinrich

I think they go after a Grant Hill and Antonio Mcdyess. If they do trade they will go after Hinrich. If you look at what the Blazers value, solid role models, character guys and now veterans. These three fit that criteria. All three of them are at points in their career where they just want to win a championship and not start over. All three have been on teams that either have went a different direction, cutting cost and or in Hinrich's position is making starter money but is a reserve competing with a potential superstar. Grant is unrestricted, Mcdyess is unrestricted. Combined the two of them made roughly 2.5 million last year. I have tought for a while that these players would look at San Antonio. But now that San Antonio has traded for Jefferson and drafted the position players (Blair) I have changed that thought. I know the Blazers probably won't get all three. But two of them I could see. Unfortunately, with these acqusitions, Blake and Outlaw would be traded. Below would be the 12 deep roster.

Hinrich, Bayless,

Roy, Rudy,

Webster, Hill, Batum,

LMA, McDyess, Pendergraff

Oden, Pryzbilla

Looking at this roster, it keeps the core together, brings veteran leadership, great character and the public will love this group.  On the court keeps the qualities that KP looks for, flexibility, size at each position and I feel Nate would be happy with these verterans.

Change the "Hill"

from Grant to Steven, and I agree 100%.

Tony Bennett reports that Minnesota and Portland are swapping draft picks -- Roy to Portland, Foye to Minnesota. That's it? That's the trade? None of the ESPN guys seem remotely fazed. I knew Kevin McHale couldn't just pick the best guy in the draft without somehow screwing it up. I would have bet my Ndudi Ebi rookie cards on it.

While Grant is probably fed up with the Suns management

I think he really wants to play with Nash and spend as much time as possible with the “fountain of youth” training staff they have down there. He’s only getting paid $2 million per year (as one of the better players on the team) and I think he’s probably doing it more for fun than money. I’m skeptical that he’d want to leave (unless maybe Nash gets traded or they just totally blow up the team).

I like it, but...

I would want Grant Hill only if he’d be willing to be 3rd on the depth chart at SF, at least to start the season. I don’t like the idea of splitting 48 minutes between three players and both Webster and Batum need playing time. I wonder if he’d be willing to do that, considering that he’s shown in Phoenix that he can still play fairly well. But I’d absolutely take him if he’s willing to play that role.

Another option there could be Ime Udoka, who I think might be willing to sit on the bench just to stay in the league, especially coming back to Portland. He could still play some good minutes if Webster’s injury lingers (knock on wood) and he’s already a known quantity in the locker room from his previous stint. Plus he would give just what the team needs from a 3rd SF: defense and 3-point shooting (37% career, though only 33% last year).

Overall, though, I think Hinrich, McDyess, and Hill (or Udoka) would make this a great offseason.

I completely agree

We need a veteran SF that is willing to sit at the end of the bench, Batum is just too good.

I don't see Grant leaving PHX for PDX just to sit on the bench

He can do that in PHX (where he’s got better trainers) and doesn’t perform as well (old joints that need to be warmed up).

Ime

would be a great pickup.

Wasn’t Grant quoted as saying he’d retire before leaving Phoenix? I remember something like that and it was in the context of the dry air and their awesome trainers.

by danielfarrell on Jun 28, 2009 9:08 AM PDT reply actions

I don't remember the quote

But that seems like the case. He’s not getting paid much now and seems to be playing more for fun than money. He’s also good buddies with Nash and enjoys playing with him.

Great additions...

I’m definately on board with Hinrich, and I think McDyess would be a solid pick up too. As for SF, they need to try to get a read really soon as to how Webster is progressing. Maybe he should try to play some Summer League games? If he is going to be hampered going into the season, then a pick up like Hill makes sense also.

Yes

I would be happy with this plan. Allows Martell time to get back into form and provides cheap, veteran insurance. Same with McDyess. And obviously I love Hinrich. Good proposal that makes sense and is undoubtedly realistic.

While I like the idea of adding Hinrich

I’ve read on Blogabull that he’s not the greatest defender against speedier PGs. In fact, it was argued that he’s better against SFs than SGs because he’s maybe lost a step. So, while he adds wing defense, he may not be able to shut down the Aaron Brooks and CPs better than Blake could.

So does this “fact” (assuming its true) alter the calculations of his value to the Blazers at all? Could Batum shift over and take on the PGs while Hinrich takes on the SG/SF’s, or would that not work? I’m not trying to posit an argument, just wondering.

by ninjasocks on Jun 28, 2009 12:15 PM PDT reply actions

True

but you are not going to find many guys that can actually stay in front of Aaron Brooks. The only guy off the top of my head who might actually keep him out of the paint is Rondo. Kirk would still give him trouble. My hope is that Bayless will develop into a defensive minded point guard who can shut out guys like CP and Parker. He’s got the work ethic and athletic ability to be a terrific defender.

Instead of Hill

The Blazers should consider Bruce Bowen. He’s likely to be renounced by Milwaukee, and he’s not going back to San Antonio. He’s good friends with Monty, and he would add toughness and playoff experience to Portland’s bench. Nate could play BB spot minutes during the regular season, then turn him loose on the opponent’s best wing player during the playoffs, to clutch and grab and be a general nuisance.

If you want to win multiple playoff series, this is the kind of player you need

but Indy loves the guy. I’d be surprised if they let him walk.

Bruce Bowen is a disease

I’d rather he stay as far away from the Blazers as possible.

People can talk all they want about what a stand-up guy Bowen is off the court,

but when you play like he plays (played), that doesn’t represent the type of team we’ve been working for. And people can talk about his championship rings, but if playing like he plays is what it takes, then I don’t want ’em — rings or bowen.

This is very close

I’m also of the opinion that we don’t need another all star, but 2 or 3 heady veterans who’d be happy to come off the bench.

If I'm in Antonio McDyess or Grant Hill's shoes, then my objective would be to sign with a team that's a ...

legitimate championship contender this season. So, after immediately crossing the Portland Trail Blazers off of that list, I’d look for a veteran squad that could use my skill set.

For McDyess, the Boston Celtics make the most sense. With the overrated Glen Davis as a restricted free-agent, Leon Powe out indefinitely with a torn ACL and meniscus in his left knee, and Brian Scalabrine being a pile of suck, McDyess could come in and be the primary backup for Kendrick Perkins and Kevin Garnett on the Celtics frontline.

The Celtics could theoretically sign McDyess to a two-year, $4,139,200 contract (i.e., 2009-2010: $1,990,000 & 2010-2011: $2,149,200) with the bi-annual exception, which’d be a fair deal for both parties.

For Grant Hill, the Los Angeles Lakers make a boatload of sense if Trevor Ariza bolts via free agency — which isn’t likely to occur in my opinion — while another option would be for him to re-sign with the Phoenix Suns to a one-year, minimum-level contract due to him enjoying the area. Hill, moreover, may also consider returning to the Orlando Magic at a one-year, minimum-level contract, but only if Hedo Turkoglu heads off elsewhere.

by AK1984 on Jun 28, 2009 2:26 PM PDT reply actions

Does that mean the Celtics let Powe and Davis go?

They are in luxury tax land and so every dollar on a contract costs them 2. They might prefer McDyess to their own guys, but they are likely going to sign one backup PF to an affordable deal. I think it is more likely they decide to keep one of their own guys (Davis ‘cause he’s healthy). I can see McDyess going to the Magic where he could start or at least play more minutes than he would backing up KG (Lewis would play the 3 and VC the 2).

Your point of McDyess being a long-shot for Portland to pick up is spot on. Powe to the Blazers on a deal that reflects a discount because of his injury sounds good to me.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
