Sunny Saturday JD 6/27

Good Grief it is bright outside!  I woke up at 6 and it looked like noon already.  I'd say this weekend is off to a good start.  Except for the fact that nobody had started a Junk Drawer yet.  Hmmm, the first weekend after the draft... this might be the one to break the record.  Speaking of the draft... does Claver look like Mike Dunleavy Jr. 2.0 to anybody else?  I'll admit I've only watched about 30 seconds of him actually playing, but he looked kinda slow and... I don't know... unimpressive.

And now I'm off to Wild Waves to burn in the sun!  Later all.

Yes..it is bright

I do miss the sun living in Portland area. I grew up in Southern Oregon and you get more summer there (and less rain in the winter). I laugh at people who start bitchin’ and moanin’ about the heat when it hits around 80.

I moved from the Portland area to California

I miss Portland… but I’d miss the sunshine if I moved back up.

It was only 93 yesterday here. Nothing too warm.

Yep, Bay Area

It was in the mid to upper 90’s today. A good day to be in either air conditioning or a pool.

It gets really hot here in the Summer

Today ended up being 101, tomorrow 103. We can be over 90 for weeks at a time.

A few years ago, we had something like 8 straight days over 107 degrees. That was nuts. Luckily that’s rare.

You're all confused

Anything over about 78 sucks. I laugh at people who live in Oregon and start bitchin’ and moanin’ when it drops below 55. 45-55 is great runnin’ weather.

I stay flexible

I enjoy aspects of weather from 45-95, but I’d prefer if it was dry when it is below 60.

Just visited the Apple Store in Munich Germany. Rarely seen a business that flourishing.

On a completely normal day. Okay the next iteration of the iPhone launched recently (not involved in this one), but nothing really major this week. Yet it was more frequented than the ones in NY or San Francisco on my last visits. Just two main floors, but still interesting. They found a very good location right next to the largest sports retailer ever (huge in outdoor sports, not so much for basketball), and next to the city hall square. I should apply for assistant to the store manager or “Apple Genius” there, can’t be that hard to hit your sales targets if weekdays aren’t completely empty. Not to mention Christmas and “Back to School” season.

Also just checked in online for my next flight. And noticed that’s another job that gets outsourced to the customer, and you find it comfortable yet the airline saves time and money with you doing self-service. Win win?

the number 92 dullifies all! hhahahaa

just kidding, you’re 10 better than me. :-) I’m not sold on The Need for a Banger theory anymore/yet though, unless you think oden will not be on the floor as much as last season, which would be a glass is half empty speculation, or a “we must package outlaw for hinrich” camp, which makes sense, but is too obvious at this point maybe? Toughness has to be a team mentality and doesn’t just come from one position, off the bench (hello Matt Harpering!).
Maybe if i see phonograph or whatever his name is playwell in SL than i’ll be able to get excited, i don’t really want to trade outlaw just because we happen to have a guy that might be able to ‘bang hard.’

MillsFanBoy

by appel82 on Jun 27, 2009 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

all for toughness...

so often last season no one would get after the ball…just Pryz or no one…Oden was strong at the glass – - but with him and Joel that was an either or situation…, and for as well as things played out stats wise, the team could use a hard battling rebounder who could get boards, absorb some fouls, etc…of course this persons number would actually have to be called for them to get up and do this….BUT…someone has to rebound if whomever the 4 is is shooting jumpshots from the top of the key (like Gerald Wallace does from the 3)…

been playing a bunch of music…gonna play the Bull durham Blues Festival in Sept so we are gearin up for that…it’s the largest gig of it’s type in NC – - my first “stadium” gig even tho its only a minor league ball park…

gonna take my 10 yo to Shav’s BB camp coming up in a couple of weeks…so i been shootin around in the driveway alot so as to not look like a complete idiot over there….

we are driving up to Hershey Park pA This comin week for some….chocolate and amusement park action…just summerin’ on the farm….picking blackberries..growin tomatoes..watchin the tobacco get tall..

hope all is well in your world…i figger no matter what my bud will be on a roster somewhere next season so there will be at least one or two op’s to get up close with the blazers….so i plan to stay in the wings regardless….:-)

by LetsBlaze on Jun 27, 2009 6:48 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

very cool… keep posting pictures of your gigs.

One of my favorite parts of last year was the behind the scenes look at the team…….

I want Shav to sign with New Orleans They desperately need help on the front line and Chris Paul could make Shav a lot of money… he made Sean Marks look good, and Shav >>>> Marks. Plus, he’d be on a western conference team that is pretty far east so you could give us two insider reports on the Blazers next yaer.

by Cablinasian on Jun 27, 2009 7:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are the players earning money with their various camps or rather giving back to the community?

I could imagine either one. Famous camps probably earn money while others don’t.

by Norsktroll on Jun 27, 2009 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

shav's is priced less than an average kids summer day camp

it’s also completely filled without there ever being any announcements or ads – - 200+ kids last yr…it’s a build character through sports thing moreso than a hone your skills thing – - but it has all levels from ages 6 I think through HS seniors…he said he is giving away signed shoes as door prizes – - ones that he got from blazer players this year….i’m excited for my lttlest to go…she has a real nose for the game at 10 yo and looks just like her big sister who is 5’8" or so at age 14…she will drive him a bit crazy too which makes me smile because she won’t sweat him at all

i dunno

you look at what chauncey billups did for denver, he inspired the team to play defensive, scrappy, to play solid, yet loose. I don’t know if just the actions are enough, maybe pentagram has a attitude that rubs off on others like chauncey, or kevin garnet, certainly the blazers scouts are into some crazy advanced voodoo scouting that’s completely clairvoyant. I’d say if they did, than bayless would have beat out sergio in the preseason. Yes Crash still is a bad mofo who i’d give up all 3 of the teams SFs for.

nah. it's just an excuse to get people to pay extra for beer grown with ...

…. hops and other such ingredients that were certified organic (no pesticides, etc.)

It’s actually a pretty good event and works well with the Sunny Saturday mentioned in the post. :)

I think they have over 60 beers – IPA’s, Wits, a few stouts, lots of ales.

It’s much better to pay $1 per 3 or 4 ounce taste at a festival than overpay for a bottle of the same stuff at a store. i’ve seen some bottles of ‘organic’ beer for $8 or $9.

Our big festival is in late July at the Portland Waterfront Park. That’s for any variety of beer, organic or not. They usually have 100 beers from around the US.

My feeling all along was that they were going to let it be Jerryd

I have concern that it might again be some uncertain mixture/balancing act that will be unsettling for all involved .. . . Blake as a strong backup – - bring him in to do the point with Roy and Jerryd still on the floor – - lot of ways to mix this group – - I hope they stay away from the first team second team thinking and just let thngs flow based on matchups and whose hot.

if you are playing small ball

Which most teams, especially in the east, do it seems like, than a three guard combo that you speak of Roy, Bayless, and Fernandez with outlaw or batum or banger, plus aldridge at the 5, you have a pretty explosive line up that can attack in a lot of ways. If you need defense, you put Oden and/or Pryzbilla, and then there is Batum, who is still pretty badass because he can play 2-4 offensively, and defend pretty much every position, save guys like Lebron, too athletic, Wade, to fast, and Kobe, too good.

Nice

To bad the air quality was so poor.

by southern oregon on Jun 27, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

nah air quality up there was pretty good

the mountain just looks blurry because of the melting snow, although there was a ton of dust getting kicked up on the gravel roads since it’s so dry.

i was kicking myself for not bringing some beer to drink while i was up there. Where else could you chill beer in snow in 70+ degree weather?

what happened to ricky rubio mania?

before the draft, a lot of folks here were beating the drums for him. now he is just waiting, attainable, and there’s not a peep.

I was a Rubio fan

But clearly with him going at #5 we could have had him if we wanted him.
Claver will strengthen the low position, hopefully before 2 years is up, or be traded at the right time.
Meanwhile, KP said there are no surprises pending (nothing brewing secretly) but that they will be looking at any and all opportunities. Having passed over Rubio it looks like either we are waiting to move for some veteran leadership or the "let it bake" scenario is still alive. I think either option must be Ok with KP and company or KP would have said there is something else going to take place, as he has indicated this in the past when he meant it.
Add to that, Allen saying go for it, and it looks like there will be more of a chance for a veteran, but standing pat (for the time being) until the right one is available.

so quick question

in your humble opinion, who is the greatest pg of all time?
because me and this guy were arguing over this a few days ago and i realized i never really thought about it and i never saw most of the greats play so i can’t honestly say i know what im talking about on the subject so anyone who has please give me the scoop.

The greatest of all time is Magic.

Statistically, Chris Paul has a solid chance to be the best point guard of all time.

that's what i said

but the other guy said it was stockton and i just think his numbers are a little inflated by the system he played in although i would still put stockton in my top 3

not quite enough junk to shake a stick at....

What’s happening people?!?! draft getting you down? Anticipation for free agency and trades like crazy over there!!!

Well!!!! I’ve had an unreal summer, and it is only going to get better! Or.. this is a I have good news and bad news comment…

Good news.. I’m having a great time and I finally made it in here to give an update of my time out here in Spain! It’s great; I learned a lot, but I am still pretty unsure about trying to type en espanol.

Bad news.. is not bad news.. it is good news but I’ll be gone even longer..

I’ll be spending a couple weeks near Sitges (Spain) with new friends (where I am now… in pure relaxing beach heaven) before heading to Crete to play archealogy intern for a month (free room & board!) before I head up to Cockenzie (who could make up a name like that? – Scotland) to stay with my great aunts and cousins for another month before I head out….. to do…….. the freakin WARSAW-LODZ-KATOWICE shuffle!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes.. that’s right. Eat it, suckas! hah. j/k but I am sooooo freakin’ excited. The whole summer will be amazing, but I cannot wait until September!!!

I expect to jump back in here a few more times over the next couple of weeks between beach trips and parties in Sitges….. I had some trouble even logging into BE while I was in Valladolid or load up the junk drawers, but I was able to keep up on the main post stories.

BTW, no comments from me about anything that is happening or the draft other than to say that RC and co. may prove to be the geniuses for stopping the blair fall, but I never believed he would find the level of success people (although apparently not GMs anymore) expect of him in the NBA.

I am so so jealous – but in a good way.

I spent all night trying to embed a video into a fanshot of Claver, finally got it to work. When I got back it was totally dead here.
We’ve had some busy JD days while you’ve been gone. Had to make 2 drawers for the same day due to size on occasion – and this is the off-season. I think one day was 2500+
A lot of guys people have truly missed you. The Hawks are looking very good!!! Which makes me extraordinarily happy happy happy. Sorry, don’t want to get too excited just yet.
Thanks for keeping us updated, check in again when you have time.

Some of the comments the ESPN guys come up with just kills me.

"Clippers get an A grade for drafting Blake" – WHAT, for doing the no brainer.
Anybody could have made the choice with the #1 pick. KP’s maneuverings in the end will be shown to be for shrewder and mensa like.

spain-south africa is crazy

SA scores the first, 5 minutes from the end Spain scores twice (the second’s great one) and in the last play SA hits an amazing free kick 25 meters out. 2-2 and into extra time.
