Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

In this article for the SBN Laker Blog, Silver Screen & Roll, I took a look at the discussions going on among the fans of 7 Western Conference teams, including the Blazers, Clippers, Grizzlies, Hornets, Jazz, Kings, and Mavericks.

Bloggers weigh in with their feelings about their own team's draft and then I kick in my own two cents.

The second installment featuring the rest of the Western Conference teams will make its appearance tomorrow.

Good stuff

I think the best news of the night was that (according to Wheels, shortly after the Claver pick) Portland had plans to draft Tyler Hansbrough but were unable to get him, because Indy liked him more. (thank you, Pacers! now send us Jeff Foster)

Tom Penn said yesterday on the Fan that there were "4-5 deals’ that fell through on draft night, and some of these probably revolved around Psycho T.

So in the end (and remember, Portland went 1:20 over their alloted time before picking #22) KP may have had to “settle” for Claver at 22.

That doesn’t mean they don’t like Victor, or that keeping him in Europe for a few years isn’t a good idea. (But his cap hold still counts until after the summer, so the Blazers didn’t gain salary space to use on a FA next month)

I think it’s possible that Claver’s rights could be on the move soon, in a lopsided deal for a PG. Maybe. Also, Chris Monter mentioned that he heard Pendergraph’s name mentioned in trade rumors, on draft night.

So don’t chisel any of these new names onto the Blazer’s fall camp roster, just yet.

There ya go.

Again: the only way the 24 —> 22 at a big premium makes sense is if the guy targeted was Casspi. It was well known that Sacramento was going for him at the 23 — about as well as anything anyway…

Indy going for Hansbrough at 13 was pretty shocking… And Hansbrough was definitely gone no later than 20 to Utah…

That means that somebody in the 14-19 range wanted to do a deal for Casspi by picking Hansbrough…

14. Suns
15. Pistons
16. Bulls
17. Sixers
18. T-wolves
19. Hawks

There are your candidates if somebody wants to reverse engineer what the deal that fell through was.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
