Rubio A No-Show

And so it begins. Rubio won't be there at Minnesota's introduction press conference. Flynn and Ellington will be there but no Ricky Rubio. His father indicated Rubio might stay in Europe for a year or two. It is plain to see that they are leveraging for a trade with a bigger market team.

If KP and the Trailblazers have any interest in Ricky Rubio, they have a shot at him. I know Portland is not a big market but I have a feeling Ricky Rubio would gladly play with Rudy Fernandez and the Trailblazers, at least over the Timberwolves. We have more assets than NY :)

Perhaps something like this:

Travis Outlaw + Bayless + future 1st round pick

No Rubio at Today's Press Conference

I said this a few times on twitter last night

Kahn is quickly losing trade value for RR. Every time Rubio or his dad talk, his trade value drops. Someone is going to pick him up for good value sooner or later.

How did you guys win that?

Unless they already have a trade worked out. It could depend on test years salaries or a sign and trade so it couldn’t take place for a week or two.

i think word would be out. I think they are trying, but my guess is nothing is set in stone yet.

New York remains the heavy favorite to get Rubio. It just makes way too much sense.

I'm wondering...

isn’t Rubio just Sergio Rodriguez v2.0?

Sergio was heralded for his speed, court vision, and play making. So is Rubio.

Sergio was heralded for the talent oozing out his pores. So is Rubio.

Sergio has no jump shot, can’t finish at the rim, and isn’t a good defender. All accounts are that so is Rubio.

Just a thought.

But I like to be here. Oh, I like it a lot! Said the Cat in the Hat. To the fish in the pot.

by Balian on Jun 26, 2009 10:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Rubio is on a totally different level

The arguments I would use against him is his age and how everyone else on our team (for the most part) is READY NOW to contend, and waiting for a PG is no fun…

BUT, he seems like an extremely special talent who is leagues above Sergio.

I am not really a fan of Sergio, though. I’m a fan of Rubio.

What's with all the prima donna point guards in this draft?

Rubio is starting to sound like a little baby. Jennings didn’t initially go to the green room ( even though he was invited ) for fear of lasting to long, awwwwww, did young money ( dumbest nickname ever ) not wanna get his widdle feelers hurt? Then he shows up later on stage looking a fool. Geez, this draft was pretty weak, yet these guys think their feces don’t stink.

Rubio has some deficiencies.

He is young and he does need to work on his strength.

But defense is absolutely not a problem with him. Rubio plays better defense at 19 than any PG on the Blazers roster in the last 5 years.

On a serious note

I hope he goes all Yi Jianlian on Minnesota & we can acquire his rights. The main competitors will be NY & LA.

From Minnesota PSD Fans talking about an LA trade in the event that Rubio doesn’t want to report:

I don’t know I would say I would be happy with Odom,or Bynum or Ariza and Farmar.

Not sure they want to blow up their team for upside, or they make the move for the future. As of now our future 1st round picks project to be slightly better placement then LA’s.

NY. I think we can offer them more personell wise. I know they would be eager to take on Brian Cardinal’s contract as it expires in the 2010 offseason.

We could swap Martell & Brewer, both didn’t play much last year. Martell has more career production though. We could take on Cardinal & Madsen’s contracts too. Give them a steady PG in Blake & the “future” in Bayless.

Something like this http://www.realgm.com/src_checktrade.php?tradeid=5147155.

This draft just goes to show.

That GM’s do things different from the common thinking of fans. Like not drafting Blair with the 33. Or Richard Jefferson getting traded for expiring contracts.

I dont think I will ever see a fan wanting Jefferson gone for spare parts and cap relief. Trades are becoming more and more imbalanced.

Right now we have a position of power in capspace. Lately, that has been a bigger trade chip then mid level young prospects.

He won Defensive Player of the Year in the ACB

Which is one of the top leagues in the world. This no defense thing is really beginning to bug me. The only reason he isn’t a Nate kind of player is because he turns the ball over a lot and he only weighs 180. Both of these are not dealbreaking problems IMO

He is not sergio – he shot 43% from three last year and while he has a slow release its not as bad as Bayless’ and is more than good enough to drain the wide open threes we would ask him to take. Sergio couldn’t get a spot on the Spanish Olympic Team over him and Rubio is 5 years younger – that should be the end of that discussion altogether.

In addition, adding Rubio would extend a potential championship run – when Roy and LMA are heading into their 30’s Rubio will be 24-25 and hitting his prime. He is a perfect fit for this team mid and long term and the only argument against trying to get him is that it would decrease our chances of winning in the next 1-2 years and be the end of Bayless. I love Bayless’ potential but Rubio is going to be a better player, would be better now, fits the team better as a playmaker and has a far higher ceiling.

if we were to trade for Rubio it would likely be to move him to NJ in a Harris trade

not that either scenario is likely…but the only way we could realistically get harris is by shipping a Rubio/Rudy package (maybe plus something)…

i doubt it’s gonna happen but if we WERE actually targeting Harris that would be the general path we’d have to go down to get him

Rubio

Pritchard honestly couldn’t best a package of Miller/Foye for the #5 pick?

I think there is a chance Pritchard will make a move for Rubio’s rights before the summer ends. Hopefully playing with Rudy is good enough incentive(and its not too cold here for him). I just hope & pray the Lakers don’t someone get him.

Rubio has already been added to the trade checker if anyone is interested. It would probably cost us Bayless, Blake, Outlaw, Martell, Przybilla, 1st round pick in 2010 & 2012.

I suspect he was drafted to be traded. It was amusing to watch the Minni war room when Stern announced the 5th and 6th picks. There was very little excitement or clapping when Rubio was announced at the 5th spot, and a lot more clapping and excitement when the 6th pick was announced. I ran the DVR back to check it again after the 6th pick.

Ricky Rubio would be smart to get himself traded to New York or a big-market team on the west coast.

Of course, Rubio would most likely voice his displeasure at any deal involving the Portland Trail Blazers — which is a small-market team, no matter any homeristic comments that try to dispute otherwise — however, New Jersey wouldn’t necessarily be a bad destination for him.

FROM MINNESOTA & TO NEW JERSEY
PF Brian Cardinal ($6,300,000)
PF Mark Madsen ($2,630,000)
PG Ricky Rubio (Draft Rights)

FROM NEW JERSEY & TO MINNESOTA
PG Devin Harris ($7,800,000) [Base-Year Compensation Player]
SG Keyon Dooling ($3,300,000)

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ncrk22

For Minnesota, David Kahn saves him the embarrassment of Rubio staying overseas with DKV Joventut for two more seasons in a huff over being drafted by a small-market franchise. In addition, the T’wolves acquire a ready-made point guard in Devin Harris who’ll allow the raw, undersized Jonny Flynn to come off the bench in a more appropriate reserve role for him.

C: Al Jefferson
C: Etan Thomas
C: Oleksiy Pecherov
PF: Kevin Love
PF: Darius Songaila
PF: Craig Smith
SF: Ryan Gomes
SF: Corey Brewer
SG: Wayne Ellington
SG: Keyon Dooling
PG: Devin Harris
PG: Jonny Flynn
PG: Sebastian Telfair
PG: Bobby Brown (Player Option)

For New Jersey, acquiring Rubio would be a transaction with major long-term implications. In the meantime, though, Rubio would help the Nets market itself, push merchandise, and sell tickets during what promises to be an extremely rough transition season in 2009-2010. Also, dealing Harris and Keyon Dooling for a couple of scrubs with expiring contracts (i.e., Brian Cardinal and Mark Madsen) — who’d both be released right after the completion of the trade — would clear up an enormous amount of cap space come the summer of 2010.

C: Brook Lopez
C: Tony Battie
C: Josh Boone
PF: Yi Jianlian
PF: Eduardo Najera
PF: Sean Williams
SF: Terrence Williams
SF: Bobby Simmons
SF: Trenton Hassell
SG: Courtney Lee
SG: Chris Douglas-Roberts
SG: Jarvis Hayes (Team Option)
PG: Ricky Rubio

A report on Marca on Thursday night quoted Ricky Rubio’s father as saying he will likely remain in Spain instead of joining the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Rubio, will stay in europe because he wasn’t drafted high enough to afford his buy out. That was always the risk of drafting Rubio. Personally I don’t want him on this team. Robby Benson belongs in Hollywood

As you recall from the movie One on One, Rubio-Robby will have a tough transition making the leap from the small town to the big city. Some aging actress will need to take him into her bed and restore his confidence after the league destroys his psyche. I expect a Hollywood ending for this drama.

Don't know if you guys want to hear from a Wolves fan

But…No. They aren’t trading Rubio, almost certainly. Even if he stays in Europe, an eventuality that Kahn is already publicly preparing the fan base for.

What has to be understood is that parts—even quality parts—don’t really help the Wolves. They are bad. They have to roll the dice on finding greatness. Now, it’s not likely that Rubio is a franchise changing talent, but at least there’s a CHANCE that he is. I don’t want to wait for him, but I will if I have to. And so will Kahn.

In terms of whether he’ll come this year…getting drafted 5th hurts him in his buyout. I don’t know whether he’ll be over this year or not, but everyone needs to take a breath. A lot of things get said in the first 24 hours. Let’s just wait to see what happens with his buyout.

Ultimately, Kahn, whatever his weaknesses, has shown clearly that he understands that the fan base has to be marketed to. Rubio is the best thing that could happen on that front. It will be a hit if it takes a year, but not as big a long term hit as if they trade him for essentially non-descript parts that at best get them to 35 wins.

Now, can I interest you in a fresh young point guard named Jonny Flynn in exchange for Rudy Fernandez :)
