6/26 JD – A sad day for junk

Several famous individuals have passed over the years,
not sure why, but I feel a sadness somewhat greater over Michael’s death.
I think maybe because in some way I identified with him. Not who he was as a person, but identified with the emotion displayed in his tremendous talent.

Star-divide

Lyric:
You went to school to learn girl!
Things you never ever knew before
Like "I" before "E" except after "C"!
And why two plus two makes four!
Now, now, now,
I'm gonna teach you,
All about love girl,
sit yourself down,
take a seat!
All you gotta do is repeat after me!
A, B, C!
It's easy as
One, two, three, as simple as
Do, re, mi, A, B, C, one, two, three!
Baby you and me girl!
It's easy as
One, two, three, as simple as
Do, re, mi, A, B, C, one, two, three!
Baby you and me girl!
Come on girl and love me just a little bit!
I'm gonna teach you how to sing it out!

I’ve reminisced at times, what would have it been like to grow up during certain musical eras. The 50’s, the 60’s, 70’s, etc. I think it would have been cool to grow up in the beginning of rock and roll, Buddy Holly, Elvis, Roy Orbison et al. And also wondered what it would be like to just be getting into music right when the Jackson 5 were first breaking out.

I’m not much of a poet, but here’s my simple ode.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A, B, C, one, two, three

missing you, do you miss me

singing our lives, singing dreams

backdrops to my reality

legends come, great ones stay

did a legend pass by this day

my soul is troubled soul dismayed

a broken light will show the way

Do, re, mi, A, B, C, incomplete

Well I can safely say I'm no poet

prose is my poetry.

I wonder about growing up in other musical eras as well, I don’t like mine that much, especially not compared to the 50’s for instance…

I can’t remember when I heard the above song for the first time.

Buddy Holly was.

I’d argue Richie Valens wasn’t. Him dying in that plane crash gives him that sort of reputation though.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2009 12:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree that Buddy was the biggest star of the three, but Richie could have been great

now because of his death, he’s legendary.

It’s like Kennedy… perhaps if he’d lived, he wouldn’t have been reelected, or he could have done a terrible job. We’ll never know but you can’t argue that he’s legendary, I don’t think its a “reputation” thing.

by fanfaraway on Jun 26, 2009 1:07 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally think it's a reputation thing.

Valens had La Bamba and Donna. I don’t think he changed music in any way like Buddy Holly did. He was the first (that I know of) Hispanic rock star, and that’s something. It’s just my opinion, but I don’t think that music now would be any different if he had never come along. You can’t say that about Buddy Holly. What you describe is more like Kurt Cobain. He’s legendary because he changed things, was innovative, etc. Nirvana maybe gets more credit for greatness because he shot himself, but they were truly great anyway. Can’t say the same for Valens.

Incidentally, one of my high school history teachers contended that JFK was the most overrated president ever.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2009 1:12 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I'm not getting my point across

Richie Valens may or may not have influenced music decisively, but he died in that fateful plane crash and thus became a legend.

I agree Kennedy is overrated, but his death set him apart. Sometimes your death and not your life is what makes you a legend.

by fanfaraway on Jun 26, 2009 1:19 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

interesting point of view.

I get what you’re saying. I’m saying that just dying in a famous crash doesn’t make you a legend. Everyone dies so it’s not so great an accomplishment. I think what you do in your life and how you affect your particular field makes you legendary, especially in pop culture. It is an interesting debate though.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2009 1:28 PM PDT up reply actions

I grew up a couple of miles away from Ritchie Valens

So he was a local kid makes good guy but Buddy Holly was living proof that skinny dudes with glass’s could be cool and my main man, that plane crash messed up my young mind for a while.

MJ/Serg tribute

Serg’s Out Of My Life
Serg’s Out Of My Life
And I Don’t Know Whether To Laugh Or Cry
All I know is Paul’s wallet is light
And the team is not as white
Serg’s Out Of My Life

[2nd Verse]
The ball’s out of his Hands
The ball’s out of his Hands
To Think For three Years he Was Here
but he isn’t the point of the future,I hear
Now he’s in the the wastelands
The ball’s out of his Hands

[Bridge]
So I’ve Learned That a shot’s Not in his Possession
And I’ve Learned That Nate Won’t Wait
Now I’ve Learned That his game Needs Expression
But he earned Ben’s hate

[3rd Verse]
Serg’s Out Of My Life

Pounding the dribble is hard to hide
eventually, even KP wasn’t on his side
now the team is not as white

only because we fans worked ourselves in to a frenzy.

in the end, i think it wasn’t that big a letdown. They got a guy with a huge upside that they don’t have to pay (Claver). They got one of their top targets, who they don’t have to give a guaranteed contract to (Pendergraph). They cleared Sergio off the roster (best of luck to him). Plus, I think there are now stronger indications that the possibility of a trade for a PG (Hinrich?, Nash?)and signing a PF (Bass?) are greater.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2009 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

I disagree. Yesterday merely means that we are going to use our cap space. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have just dumped Sergio’s contract.

It means that July 8th will be a big day.

The Bedger formally known as ????????

by Rudiculous on Jun 26, 2009 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Here's my basic take

Except for Blair, there wasn’t anyone we’d want and want to KEEP.

Every single one of the draft picks are guys we don’t need to keep, or won’t bring over (Claver). That means we can really commit to the FA market or (which I think is more likely) use our even bigger cap space to absorb a deal in a trade.

The draft was a letdown because what we’re doing is still up in the air, but everything is still open and IF ANYTHING we can be sure that the cap space is being used on a real veteran we need, not a high draft pick.

by jksnake99 on Jun 26, 2009 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't get it either

It seems to be part of a plan, though, a plan centered around getting a vet we need and cap savings for someone else.

Chicago, for example.

Over the next few weeks we’ll hear more rumors about why Blair dropped. I mean, Chicago, NO, Dallas, us, OKC, everyone who could use a dude like him passed him up. Why? It makes no sense for ANY of the teams, not just us.

Sumthin’ is up, there… I dunno what it is, but it is up.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 11:08 AM PDT up reply actions

ya

there is something about Blair that we just don’t know. His knees must really be shot…

The Bedger formally known as ????????

by Rudiculous on Jun 26, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Cunningham is a cheaper (and far less athletic) Travis

Maybe a little better on defense by being more physical. But he can’t create his shot like Travis, doesn’t have a “wet shot”, and is stuck even more between two spots. And he is a senior, so his upside isn’t that high. I assume Travis is in our trading plans, and should he get traded Cunningham is insurance. As a PF backup to LaMarcus, it makes no sense to pass on Blair (and other purer PFs on the board) when you already have Pendergraph who is a tall forward.

by Norsktroll on Jun 26, 2009 3:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Blair makes a lot more sense to me as well

Just makes me think more is up than is clear right now.

Hell, maybe they just liked what they saw in Cunningham. I like what I’ve read about his BBIQ and hustle, but scouts are often guilty of hyperbole when judging players so it may be meaningless. I’ve only seen (now) some clips of the kid, so I can’t say he is or is not worth it. Maybe they felt his more versatile defense is better.

To me, it just seems like there is more there, either in a trade deal or with concerns about Blair.

I don’t know what to make of it, except that it means we’re getting vets, which is what we really need.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

plus if you think about it

Blair was passed over soooo many times that maybe his knees are a bigger problem than many realize. Who knows, we might have dodged a bullet and not have to absorb all the talk about another injury prone big in Portland.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2009 11:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Didn't he say that he has dropped 30 pounds since the end of the season?

Perhaps questions about Blairs willingness to maintain weight was as big of a question mark as his knees. Carrying that much extra weight those knees can’t be good.

by tingeyga on Jun 26, 2009 11:09 AM PDT up reply actions

Just like with Kevin Love the year before

You gotta worry about someone who had gained that weight in the first place, and only now losing it because of the draft. because they “gotta”.

I usually don’t trust fatties at all and make it a rule not to draft ‘em, but Blair could be the fatty small PF who makes it. I’m EXTREMELY curious what the hell happened there because it can’t just be the weight.

Mo—

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it is the weight/knees combo

Something has been bugging me.

Why do we expect Ben and Dave to have no biases? Look at other SBN communitites, like the Spur, Sun, Rocket, etc. blogs. Those bloggers have clear distastes for certain members of their favorite team.

Blogging isn’t fair. Jason Quick has to be reasonable. Ben doesn’t have to be… He’s a fan that blogs about the team.

I almost get frustrated by Dave’s vanilla at times, and I would like Blazersedge a lot less if Ben wasn’t here. Why? The snark, the cynism… that’s what makes blogs funny.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 10:45 AM PDT reply actions

One of the best things about BlazersEdge, to me, is that Dave and Ben are more like actual journalists than other people who run blogs. Other blogs seem like fan sites run by fans. This seems like a fan site run by journalists. I think a lot of that is intentional, especially on Ben’s part, and I appreciate a more concerted, integrity-driven, intelligent, reporting approach rather than another fan who just posts whatever he wants.

But, Ben and Dave are also big fans and that shines through, which is great, though sometimes in ways that are a little jarring. I think it’s fine that they have biases, but when they come out so strongly, it’s such a sharp contrast to the usual level-headed approach that it can be off-putting. There’s nothing wrong with what they write, but I think on this particular site, the bloggers are more on the journalistic side than the fan side so strong biases aren’t as well received at times because they’re a bit unexpected.

I agree that Blazers Edge would be of a far lesser quality if Ben wasn’t here.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 26, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that we expect Ben to have no bias

because he has access. And it seems that often one of the things that you give up in order to get the access is your own personal biases.

That Ben continues to have access despite his own public biases is a credit to the organization.

by tingeyga on Jun 26, 2009 11:05 AM PDT up reply actions

Well Ben reports what he sees. It gets colored by his perception, but obviously Nate wasn't too high on Sergio either.

Ben has spent more time around the locker room and practice facility than most members of the national media, and probably more than some members of the Portland media who get paid to do it. It was probably the wrong time to point out everything that’s wrong with Sergio when he was on his way out anyway, but he tried to explain why it happened and why KP thought now Sergio’s time had to run out.

by Norsktroll on Jun 26, 2009 3:18 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't expect no Bias out of Ben

but kicking Sergio on his way out seemed a little harsh… it could have waited a while to come out… plus it has become increasingly obvios that Ben Hates Sergio just because Ben loves Bayless

The Steve Blake post on O-live was the perfect example of poor usage of the power he has been given. It was totally inaccurate and disrespectful to Steve Blake’s contributions to the Blazers. I just get sick of the way he champions Bayless and pees on anyone that stands in his way. From somebody that has the type of access to the team that he has, he should use it with more responsibility. That’s my opinion anyway…

Ben is cut from the Bill Simmons blogging thread where they seems to take joy in insulting players, GM’s, or other media types in different ways. I think it’s their shtick.

lol

So you are saying if you think a player is not very good you can not passionately state your case? Ben is more colorful and less in shades of grey than Dave; however, that does not mean he is being disrespectful. I have no idea why if you think a player is garbage you can’t say so. It’s not like Ben pulled a Canzano and chronicled Steve’s visits to strip clubs or something. He never attacked his character, just his game.

Blake, as an individual that has millions of dollars invested in him to play a game, should be subject to criticism about that aspect of his life. That makes perfect sense to me. Ben likes Jerryd Bayless, so what? You are telling me that distorts and warps his opinion about EVERY point guard on the roster? Give me a break. I find it hard not to believe that Blake is a middling point guard whether you like Sergio, Bayless, Conley whomever. People differ on whether it is necessary to replace him because of that fact. That’s like me telling you that you just don’t like Jerryd Bayless because you like Steve Blake. Sure bias effects analysis to some degree, but it does so for everyone.

Just because Ben presents him opinion in a verbose manner does not mean he does not have a thoughtfully constructed argument.

Secondly, his words have you considered that his words were harsh to illicit a response? Which it obviously did. Personally I find it humorous that you feel the right to be able to tell what someone can and cannot say due to some sort of preordained credibility from Dave.

I don't agree

Not sure if you know the piece I am referring to with regards to Blake. Here it is. If that is the kind of summary that Steve Blake deserves after his season, than Ben should have taken the time to completely rip apart and humiliate Bayless after the season he put together. But I really don’t hear a lot of bad mouthing of Jerryd, who was in my opinion the most disappointing player of the season considering he couldn’t even out perform Sergio Rodriguez. I just think it is irresponsible for somebody that receives free season tickets and access to the team that most Blazer fans would kill for to just sit back and let personal biases effect the way they report what they see. Its childish, and as a member of the portland media that represents our team, I expect better. But that’s just my opinion…

Ben likes Jerryd Bayless, so what? You are telling me that distorts and warps his opinion about EVERY point guard on the roster?

Yes, that is exactly what I am saying, and I think it is irresponsible for someone that covers the team. You don’t see Jason Quick, Brian Hendrickson, Casey Holdahl, or Joel Freeman kicking Sergio in the ass as he walks out the door, even though I doubt any of them liked his game much. Ben is not just a fan, he is a credentialed member of the media. In my opinion, he should carry some amount of responsibility along with that…

I feel Quick does more manipulating of the truth than ben and i’ll bet he makes more scrilla for his time. Not to say i enjoy or dislike all of ben or jquick’s stuff, i just feel ben is more of a hardcore NBA fan and quick is more of a writer, interpreter, that’s fine. The difference is that Ben writes on a blog

and Quick, Hendrickson, and Freeman don’t. And Casey works for the Blazers so obviously he isn’t going to say anything bad about any of the players.

If you don’t like what Ben writes, don’t read it.

Ok reading that article again

Where does Ben “humiliate” Steve Blake? It’s opinionated but gives multiple well reasoned arguments that support his arguement. ITS ON AN ARTICLE ABOUT STEVE BLAKE for gods sake.

This guy is not a firefighter, policeman, or infantryman he is a basketball player. Why does there have to be some sort of veiled respect for his “sacrifices” or whatever point you are trying to convey here. I don’t see why Ben can’t say he would rather have another point guard in 8,000 words.

I think you are severely underestimating Ben’s intellect if you think he is just a Bayless-fanboi that has been blessed by Dave to speak his mind. Which is what it seems like you are saying.

Also where did Ben kick Sergio’s ass out the door? His twitter? Cmon dude.

We should have drafted him, signed McDyess who would be able to teach Blair how to survive in the NBA without athletiscm. The problem was that he doesn’t have any ACL’s.

this raises an interesting point for me. A lot of people advocate getting a certain player to mentor a younger player. Isn’t that the job of the coaching staff?

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 11:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Yes and No

Yes it is the job of the coaching staff to help develop players. But sometimes players need to hear the instruction in different ways from different places. Having a veteran can help with that.

The better question is how many players are willing to help train their replacement? I can’t imagine too many of us would jump at the oppourtunity to train a co-worker who would take our job once he learned all of our tricks.

Hollinger on Blair
I don’t understand how a player projected to be a top-15 talent can slide all the way to 37th based on reports about his knees. Here’s why: At some point, the injury risk is a “so what.” As in, “so what if he can only play for three years, he’s so much better than the average 25th pick in the draft that he’d still be worth it.”

But Blair has bad knees, and someday they might catch up to him. In the meantime, the Spurs got a lottery talent for a second-round salary while the rest of the league was drafting Sam Youngs and Taj Gibsons.

Hollinger is also unimpressed with Minnesota and New York's draft, loves Denver getting Lawson...

… thinks the Thunder’s trend of drafting project Centers is dumb, likes Danny Green in Cleveland, thinks using a 1st round pick on Chris Paul’s 8 min/game backup is dumb, likes Dallas’ draft and hates Chicago’s.

the Collison pick by NO was genius, believe me. I watch a good portion of their games, and they would literally lose games in the eight minutes CP3 wasn’t on the floor. The reason for this is twofold: it’s a motion offense, predicated on having a dominant ballhandler, and there were only three or four players who could dribble effectively on the whole roster.

Collison will really help NO, as well as letting them use Daniels as a six million dollar expiring deal.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions

by Magnum on Jun 26, 2009 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

My take exactly. You can't get a FA at the price and performance Blair would deliver, no matter for how long he would be able to

It’s why I got totally pissed of last night by one or two people telling me and others to look up Blair’s measurements and stats and get over it that he just isn’t as good as fans thought. I did. A long time ago. So did every analyst writing for money and worth his salt. There is no way in freezing hell both of our second round PF picks are “better”. They might be healthier, but they are not better suited to transfer their game from college to the NBA. I’m okay with what we did. I even really like Pendergraph and had him on my draft board. Just please don’t try to come and say Blair wouldn’t have been a great value in terms of risk and reward at #33.

by Norsktroll on Jun 26, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you and your brain skills

should write the definitive “Why we should have taken Blair at 33” post and put an end to this

I do agree with all the naysayers that Dajuan Blair would be an unequivocal failure if he played without shoes in the NBA and thus expose his 6’5" height. A real failure.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 26, 2009 3:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Players seldom fall without a good reason.

There isn’t a GM in the league who doesn’t know everything there is to know about Blair. That so many passed on him indicates he was too risky a pick for whatever reason.

by MiledAnimal on Jun 26, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

KP might not have gone Blair direction because of the Injury

Not just the no ACL part but because he didn’t want people talking about him always choosing players that are injured, with all the Oden comparisons that could have brought and the desire to avoid that conversation, for a player that would be a second round selection, role player it wasn’t worth the trouble. I think that is the wrong way to approach the situation, but I don’t think they didn’t have him on their board, like Nate said.

"Knowledge will get you from A to B. Creativity will get you anywhere." Einstein

by Garden of ODEN on Jun 26, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Could very well be. But unlike most teams the Blazers wouldn't need him to play extensive minutes or become a star to build around.

They have a player who takes 35+ minutes each game. So the wear and tear on him wouldn’t be really higher than in college where he played less games but more minutes.

Like with the medical info on Batum, I agree there must have been some MRI’s or something else going around that scared people off. I just think the Blazers were in a position to take a higher risk than many other teams, especially after Blair lasted so long that the had already locked up another good but totally different in style PF with Pendergraph.

Maybe they were concerned with adding more injury risk to a roster that already carries some. Brings back a bit the issue we discussed earlier in the offseason about how good the Blazers medical staff really is and how much they trust them to monitor players and keep them in top shape. They say so, but some results are not encouraging.

by Norsktroll on Jun 26, 2009 4:30 PM PDT up reply actions

The Batum thing was a leak that was a lie

The Blazers had learned that there WAS no heart problem, and that the Spurs were concealing from other teams that the report said he had no heart problems.

That’s similar because it’s a health risk making a dude drop, but obviously different because it was a lie.

Blair’s risks seem true, as far as I know.

I had the same ?(5 starting point guards = successful draft?) yesterday before even hearing them mention it. I guess it’s sort of an obvious hypothetical conclusion to come to when you analyze this PG-heavy/’weak" draft.

Also, i think it’s funny they talked about the bucks and brandon jenniings so much.

They found a clay taco

Buried deep in the sand at Gijon, that Carbon dates back to the early 80s. Experts and scientists believe that the explorers were trying to grow a taco tree to feed them through the harsh winter months of Spain.

That is the earliest evidence of Mexican explorers discovering Spain. Judging from the notes of their journals and the maps they were using, we can reasonably assume it was around 1983.

But their eggs were left behind and were kept warm by the explorer’s corpses, which run hot with spicy Latin rage.

The eggs hatched in the Spring, and BAM the first Spaniard came out.

So when people ask you, what came first, the Spaniard or the Egg, you know the answer.

can we have neither Hedo or Travis?

that’s my preferred option at this point. I’d rather run Batum, Webster (if healthy) or Rudy/Roy out there at SF… I won’t be upset if we keep Travis, but he’s becoming what Jarrett Jack was to me a couple of years ago; a good player that I like who just doesn’t fit the Blazers. I think Travis is best utilized to get us a PG or a quality back-up PF

by The Arkitect on Jun 26, 2009 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I would like to move Travis for a really, really efficient point guard, in the vein of Hinrich, Calderon, or Nash.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

That would be ideal

(insert “really, Hinrich?” joke here)

by The Arkitect on Jun 26, 2009 3:51 PM PDT up reply actions

ha, I’m not sold on Hinrich. Part of me really really wants a guy like Calderon, who doesn’t handle the ball much, scores the ball with alarming efficiency, and would take pressure off of Brandon.

But the common sense part of me wants defens.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 3:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Calderon would be fine

But more fine once we know Oden can anchor the defense.

For now, I want better defense, and if it’s the same offense I’d be happy. As you know, we were a pretty great offensive team last season and we’re only scratching the surface of what we can become offensively.

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 3:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Calderon isn’t a worse defender than Steve, and he’s a smart basketball player. (or basketeer, in Mortspeak)

Our offense would be insane if he ran it. Just a fun thought.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm not as convinced there.

It depends on whether our offense builds around the players, or the players around the offense.

by Timmay! on Jun 26, 2009 3:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Calderon not fitting into the offense? He has a 16% usage rate, meaning that he tends more toward Rasual Butler than Chris Paul. He handles the ball less than Steve Blake, statistically.

He’s also a superb shooter and incredible passer, especially considering his low usage rate. He also never turns it over.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

How is that usage rate possible?

Who brought the ball up court and initiated the offense if he handled it less than Blake? Anthony Parker?

That’s crazy.

Did they let Bosh hold it for 20 seconds?

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I literally stared at the screen for two minutes trying to comprehend how such a dynamite passer (AST% of40+!) could have such a low usage rate.

The crazy thing is having the 40% AST mark and having the low usage rate. It’s bordering on unreal……….

Bosh, Bargnani, and O’Neal had pretty high usage marks.

I was expecting a 26-27 usage rate. 16 leaves me confused.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions

RE his passing

I always felt he was a CAREFUL passer surrounded by jump shooters, more than a really good passer.

He’s not like Nash, for example. Just careful with the ball and when surrounded with guys who can hit an open jumper, he gets it to them and they hit it.

That would be the same on the Blazers, of course.

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Like, Nash would wake up the sleeping giant of Oden

I don’t think Calderon would help him as much as a Paul or Nash would… but maybe that goes without sayin’ ;-) But I don’t think he’s in the same league as a creative passer who really makes others better.

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

his AST% is absolutely elite, though. He’s not Blake-level cautious. He’s just definitely not Nash, which is good and bad. Nash’s TO numbers have always been bad, though not enough to overshadow his tremendous passing numbers.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

His careful, but good, passing

Is a big reason why I think Nate would like him.

Ya know, speaking of Nate and Spaniards, I don’t get why people think he wouldn’t like Rubio, when Rubio is such a good defender. Nate doesn’t hate turnovers THAT much, he hates lack of effort and bad defense more.

Just a thought. I think he’d love Rubio, if Rubio is actually Rubio. He ain’t Sergio.

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I agree. I do think that it will take him a few years to be a good defender. He had some serious troubles guarding the pick and roll in the ACB playoffs , when he was running blind into picks. Could be due to poor team communication though.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Rubio is a good thief, right?

Nate being such a good ballhawk as well prolly led to the similarity.

Rubio’s voice still cracks me up when I think of it. MAN, he really (like seriously) hasn’t gone through puberty yet.

Ever since I heard his high pitched squeak of a voice, I am more sure he will be great.

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

he’s a really good thief in that he’s not just roaming the passing lanes. He can steal the ball from the opposition in one-on-one matchups.

If his body fills out, oh boy. He’ll be great. Good thing OKC didn’t take him.

by The Arkitect on Jun 26, 2009 5:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Probably worth noting this is moot since TOR won't trade him.

But for some reason, and I can’t quantify it, I haven’t been sure Jose would be a good fit. Don’t get me wrong, you make a good case for him.

I’d sure like to bring him into Portland and find out though, you know?

by Timmay! on Jun 26, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he'd fit great offensively

His best year in Toronto, I watched a GRIP of their games, and he’s a very careful basketeer who can hit from anywhere and plays with a lot of energy.

He just has physical limitations defensively, and I actually think he is worse than Blake since Blake is pretty strong and knows what to do. Calderon isn’t clueless, just not able to keep his body in front of guys well, or really use it against the enemy.

But he’s very smart, good passer, hardly turns it over, and a GREAT spot up shooter who can penetrate better than Blake or Hinrich. Offensively, he’d fit very nice.

Defensively, I just want someone who can at LEAST harass the other team’s PG. But, if it’s Calderon or Bust, I’d be happy because he is a good role playing PG who would really help our offense even more.

I've accepted the limitations on this one

KP will do his best to get the best available PG option on the market, with acceptable losses. So I’m cutting him some slack there, I imagine he’s been on the phone with everyone.

by Timmay! on Jun 26, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd love Nash if he's available

He’d be an amazing tutor for Bayless, I’ve always thought Calderon would be great… what I really want is a pass first point guard who can create his own shot if needed.

by The Arkitect on Jun 26, 2009 3:57 PM PDT up reply actions

if Oden and Aldridge become better defensively, we could adjust for Calderon. Still not optimal, though.

Give who we have on the front line

I’m less concerned about a quick footed defense than I am about someone who doesn’t make defensive mistakes. I don’t mind if you get beat off the dribble (Nash. Kidd) just don’t double team in the wrong spot, or get caught too far off a shooter

I wasn’t too bothered by our picks last night (Well, besides that I found the draft boring, and I also wonder why we didn’t take a flier on Blair in the second round).

But I also think there’s been a crazy overreaction about the draft. I think KP simply over-delivered at the draft for so many years in a row, peoples’ expectations jumped. That was a recipe for a let-down.

Yeah, I just had a rough day trying to juggle work/family yesterday

My wife and I are expecting our third child and between trying to get the 2-yr old potty trained and out of diapers and having a 6 month old, and going through the process of getting a mini-van (because you can’t fit 3 car seats in the back of an Imprezza), while your wife is morning/evening sick and you have a full time job really forces you to knuckle up at times.

by tingeyga on Jun 26, 2009 4:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup. Draft hangover. I'm tired.

And I have to pack, since on Sunday I have to fly again. I will be less on BE for the next two weeks until something actually happens in free agency.

Honestly I have to admit to myself that it’s also not worth my emotional and time investment to discuss, explain and defend topics extensively and at the end it only results in insulting and ignorant feedback. No one here in the JD, but last night I was short before throwing out f bombs and ad hominems when someone really pissed me off. I had invested quite a lot of time between the start of the playoffs and the draft hoping for some nice things to happen. So in that way I’m a little depressed today with how uneventful the playoffs ended and the more cautious strategy the Blazers followed, though I hope it leads to something later and I still think I learned quite a lot. And also a bit frustrated with the way some other GMs fumbled around leading up to and during this draft. I can only feel and hope for e.g. Suns, Kings and Wizards fans that in the end it works out for them without turning into cynics.

P.S.: Other people have invested a lot of time as well. Namely Dave and Ben who spend about all their spare time observing, thinking and writing Blazers. So it’s only fair to cut them some slack when they don’t pitch everything perfectly.

On a more happy note, I’m incredibly stoked that Brandon Jennings now gets taught by Scott Skiles. That’s even better than what I had envisioned with him driving Nellie into retirement. Either Skiles lights a fire under him and gets Jennings to develop Bayless+ work ethic and BRoy behavior on and off the court, or Skiles gets fired himself, or Skiles gets Jennings’ butt shipped back to Italy before his option years get picked up. The Brandon Jennings years begin now ladies and gentlemen. With a slight delay. (He also gained a new fan in Timbo, judging from his profanity-laced draft diary on SSR)

I’m also kind of happy that the Thunder missed a big chance to become a super-exciting team that I might have had to follow extensively. It might have been the right thing to do in terms of becoming successful, but not so much the fun thing. They still helped themselves.

He just grew much too big for that, and now is trying to make it in basketball. Though I wouldn’t question his desire to become good not just for himself but also to get attention to his home country. Hope he gets the right coaches and advisors. Yet it still escapes me how they want to play him and Marc Gasol in a backcourt chasing players like LaMarcus and Dirk and Okur and every other mobile big man.

Yep. From the moment the Sergio trade was announced, there was a drop in civility across the site, through the draft and beyond. I can’t blame you for being frustrated.

Now for an opposite reaction to everything you’ve dealt with recently… I actually strongly disagree with one thing you’ve recently written. I am not a professional talent evaluator. KP has done well in the past, albeit not in the second round. A second round pick isn’t something worth getting bent out of shape.

When we passed him at 22 and he was still available at 31, I knew that something was really wrong with him. I really like what AttheHive (best blogger on SBN with Ziller and Dave/Ben) said: “But this smells more of ‘he couldn’t have dropped any lower’ than it does of the Spurs knowing something nobody else does.”

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

When we passed him at 22 and he was still available at 31, I knew that something was really wrong with him.

Yep. The second the Cavs passed on him at 30, I thought “wow, nobody wanted to give him a guaranteed contract”. It was hard to hold it against Portland for the first round draft decision from that point, though the second round drafting decision was still surprising.

I’m still pretty convinced that the 24-to-22 move wasn’t about Claver. They were hoping it would tip the scales in a trade. It’s weird to see them grab Claver at 22, even though many thought (wrongly?) that he would still be on the board at 31 due to the contract issues. It reminded me of Nash drafting Telfair at 13, and everyone collectively saying “huh??”

by Timmay! on Jun 26, 2009 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

eh….. what if the move up to 22 was merely to get Claver a little more money via the rookie-scale? We weren’t likely to draft anyone good with the 56 anyway.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

It's possible, but that's a mighty small difference in the bigger picture.

I’d be real surprised if the difference in paycheck from 24 to 22 makes the difference in Claver’s decision.

Unless, of course, his agent confirmed that to Portland in advance.

by Timmay! on Jun 26, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Or unless KP can see the future

and know that in the next CBA, the rookie scale won’t inhibit European players?

by tingeyga on Jun 26, 2009 4:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it’s 100,000 dollars a year. Why not? We gave up almost nothing and Claver would theoreticlaly have a 100K more. That’s not terrible.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions

When the Wolves took Lawson as the third PG of the night, I thought maybe KP would be in the bidding

But Denver offered a very good pick from Charlotte that might become pretty high, so if that was the target there was not much the Blazers could have done to outbid them unless they wanted to give away two first round picks and that’s probably not worth it from what is known about Lawson.

Could have also been that they hoped Maynor or Teague would drop to them, a la Bayless last year.

Their target definitely wasn’t Casspi, who is probably the most similar player to Claver in the draft at least in that region.

I used to consider myself to be a knowledgeable NBA fan… until I came here and realized I knew nothing. To be honest, AK really piqued my interest in Xs and Os, and I’ve since done a lot of study into that. You and others have challenged me to look at other players and understand how they fit in a system. Jake/Pelton/PoliSam bring a lot of good stat thinking. All of it is valuable. I love Bedge.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

The only bad thing about Blazers Edge

Is that it feels like I am too knowledgable about the NBA to discuss it with everyday fans I meet each day.

I don’t mean to sound pretentious, or that I am an expert; I’m just an educated fan. But the everyday person always has such a superficial knowledge of “their” team, or the league in general, and it’s hard to scale back the conversation to a superficial level after going in-depth everyday around here.

I don’t hate Outlaw, for example, and like him for what he is, but it’s tough to have a conversation about him when someone is just like “man he is so clutch and his dunks are awesome”. You try to discuss more, and you just get a blank stare.

Lotsa good, smart, basketball minds here.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Exactly. I stupidly turned on the radio for some breaking news a few days ago, and they were talking about how San Antonio acquired a superstar in Richard Jefferson, and that Portland needed to get a superstar at his level. They then said that Hinrich sucks and isn’t a good player. I was practically screaming at the radio, “YOU MOARONS! His adjusted +/-, 3PT%, and low USG% are excellent reasons! Jefferson doesn’t play good defense and is overpaid!”

Then I realize I’m an NBA nerd.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 4:16 PM PDT up reply actions

I totally agree

As I was driving to work yesterday the morning radio people were talking about the Shaq trade like it was a big surprise that he got traded. I was like “This trade has been discussed since Feburary. This isn’t a surprise at all” and then I realized that I live in Alaska and nobody cares about the NBA up here.

by tingeyga on Jun 26, 2009 4:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Heck, I don't know a damn thing compared to a lot of people in here.

And I know exactly what you’re talking about. Casual basketball conversations are painful because everyone seems SO STUPID. Blazers Edge has spoiled me.

by Corvid on Jun 26, 2009 4:27 PM PDT up reply actions

It truly is painful

I got a lot of Laker fan friends, who are nice and like the Blazers as well and follow the league. But having to explain why someone is good or why someone is great over and over, or simple crap like what a pick n’ pop is… I mean, I am not an expert on different offensive systems or plays, so I don’t discuss them.

But I know players and what they can do, and most people just don’t know anything besides whether a guy can dunk or not. Every Laker fan I meet gets their heart broken when I tell them Kobe is one of the least clutch players in the league and Derek Fisher’s sick kid was in New York, not LA.

They just don’t see anything past dunks and flash. They = everyone, not just Laker fans.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 26, 2009 4:33 PM PDT up reply actions

The hardest thing to explain is the term "adjusted for pace"

NBA analysts can’t get it right, so if that’s a fan’s primary source of learning, it’s a completely new concept.

by Timmay! on Jun 26, 2009 4:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Ohhhhh yeah

I don’t get it, it’s so easy.

I’ve explained it to my dad a billion times. Yes, we’re a good offensive team, but no, we don’t score as much as the Warriors. Yes, no, it’s because we score more per possession. Yes, it matters. No, look, the Warriors may score 130 but they shot 39% to do it. We score 97 and shoot 55% to do it, and 40% from three.

And the other team isn’t as good as that.

So our stats are artifically lower and others are artifically higher. Get it? Pace is how many possessions you have a game.

No?

Sigh.

There might be a stock market on players, either a real one or implicitly

If you hit the high, you can parlay a handful of good (playoff) games into a big new contract or a nice trade (Jerome James, Courtney Lee, I assume Glenn Davis and Marcin Gortat later this summer, …). Some deservedly, some less so.

Sergio was probably not trading at an all-time high after he was barely used in the playoffs following a good timeframe. So the timing might have been off, but if you could exactly predict when it reached its best point people would never sell their stock low. Don’t know if KP’s opinion turned influenced by Nate, if they have bigger plans with that cap space, if they rest of the league lowballed the Blazers knowing they likely wanted to move Sergio, or if they wanted Sergio to at least have a better landing spot than on another team that would just use him as a cheap contract. I think Sacramento gives him a decent chance in a faster pace with Beno and a 19 year old true SG masquerading as a PG as his competition to show he deserves the next contract, a chance he likely wouldn’t have received in Portland.

I looked up how well Bayless and Sergio played when they got more time yesterday after the trade, and while they both had stinkers (no assists, or little points in a loss) they usually were much better when they got 20 minutes. Playing time and not having to look over your back all the time matters a lot to any player and to a PG even more so in my opinion.

by Norsktroll on Jun 26, 2009 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I HONESTLY think part of the deal

Was putting Sergio in a good situation.

Sactown is, pretty much, the ONLY team he has a chance to be the starter for. I don’t think Nelly would play him over the Monta-Experiment, and he flat out isn’t as good as the starting PG for any other team in the NBA.

Sacramento is the PERFECT place for him. I see it as a favor, and we get who we wanted as well for a reasonable price.

Petrie doesn't like it when people tell him what to do

He wants to toughen up his team, and he probably achieved that with Evans, Casspi and Brockman. Evans will likely wreak havoc on some point guards because he has a body like Stackhouse or Hughes in their prime, but I fear he has the PG skills of Crawford and not Billups. We will see.

In terms of off-court red flags, you bet that shooting incident immediately disqualified him for the Blazers no matter if he knew or didn’t know what would happen.

Most will disagree with me

But, before the draft and Minny doing the trade and getting Rubio and Flynn, I say Foye is both a better PG and a better player than Sergio, and so is even Telfair.

Telfair is flashy, he gets bashed for playing streetball and being too showy. Sergio is flashy, he’s got great court vision and is awesome.

I think Telfair is a better NBA player than Sergio, but Sergio is obviously less selfish and has a better head on his shoulders.

Somewhat like musicians say about their songs, and directors say about their movies. KP wants his draft picks to succeed, even if they’re on another team, just like he wants his assistant GM’s to eventually succeed.

I absolutely think it was no accident Sergio went to Sacramento. I vote “all of the above” to the possible reasons Norsk listed.

I hate

When people use length and height and standing reach for why someone won’t be a good defender.

It may HURT them, but a ton (a grip, even) of players are amazing without the ideal height, length, or standing reach. Bowen doesn’t have any of those and he played good defense, for example. Roy isn’t exceptional in any direction but he’s awesome.

It is something that is important but I hate when it is made to be everything.

I mean we would come across this interesting statistic and say “Wow, NOBODY realizes this yet, I am the smartest man alive!!!!” and look at that one statistic as the end all be all of a player’s value and disregard other stats that may not agree with our amazing stat.

Cunningham was clearly worth a #33 pick
Kevin Pritchard picked Cunningham at #33. That proves Cunningham is worth a #33 pick. KP hasn’t gotten a pick wrong in his whole career as a GM. Name another GM with Kevin Pritchard’s success rate picking prospects. You can’t.

Kevin Pritchard does not owe garden variety internet denizens explanations. He usually offers one anyway. He did do that in this case, but it’s not good enough for you, tough.

the problem is that no one has shown an ability to get others involved in the offense except for Conley, and they pretty much ignore him (low usage rate). Mayo and Gay get the ball and try to score… it’s what makes Roy/Aldridge special, their ability and willingness to pass.

he was one of the top players in the league in “bad-pass”-assist ratio, and he is really good at passing out of the post. He’s super willing to pass, is generally good at passing…. it’s part of the reason for his really good +/-.

I think it will

Last year he played a much different role than the year before. Much less center etc. It took him a while to figure out how to work best in the system, aka post all-star break. Once he and Oden develop some chemistry I suspect he will get a lot more efficient. We are one go to Oden post move from having a devastating frontcourt. Very few players can single coverage LMA well.

Hmmm… I am less confident, simply because LaMarcus IS an efficient scorer close to the basket. It’s the 18-20 foot jumpers that drag his scoring efficiency down so low………. But they’ve always been a staple of Nate’s offense, so I’m not sure if we’ll really see change there.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 5:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah

If Nate ball proves it’s worth, LMA’s threat from 18-20 helps elevate our offensive team efficiency more than it hurts us in shot attempts. Who knows, I really dislike having the 3 used as nothing but a 3pt camper though.

But the high-low zone offense is based around loading up on one side and having at least one player on the weakside to keep the defense honest. It’s an effective system that is absolutely dependent on the 3 standing in the corner.

The high-low can be used to get pick-n-pops, but it just as easily can be geared toward a 12 foot baseline jumper for the post man.

by Cablinasian on Jun 26, 2009 6:25 PM PDT up reply actions

I said nothing but,

I realize our offense is predicated on the three standing around the 3pt line.

It would be nice however, if we had a FEW plays where the 3 attacks the rim or in the case of Martell gets a few screens. We have players with offensive talent in Travis, Martell, and Nic, it’s not like we have Bruce Bowen starting for us, we should take advantage of it a little more.

I think it’s actually simpler than that.

If Batum improves his ball-handling enough, he can be the ballside wing in the high-low zone, or the “2.”

during the last stretch of the year, Rudy switched from weakside cornerman to ballside wing quite a lot, leaving Roy or Blake on the weakside. The fact that Rudy began to initiate the offense more gave me hope for the future.

Also, Rudy played the 3 on offense for quite a few of his minutes, and he was constantly run off of screens.

I view it as less on the position they defend and more on the position they play in the high-low offense.

I have to be honest

I love all these people saying that we should get Hinrich for Blake, Outlaw and cap space. Even all these so called “insiders” who say that KP has had discussions with Chi about getting him and he is first on our list, which I bet he has discussions, but the fact that the majority or the population thinks he is coming makes me feel better that he will never step foot in the PF.

Much like the people that were clamoring to “Draft the ’Stache” and to “Draft DeJuan Blair” that after summer league, “Nicholas who? How could we give away Joey Dorsey(D-leaguer) and Darrell Aurthur (5.6pts and 4.6 in 20mpg) 2 players that CLEARLY better than Batum will even be!!”

Could KP of drafted better? Of course, Milsap instead of Freeland, Sessions instead of Koponen, but it is idiotic to judge him on his misses, and smarter to judge him on his hits which have been astounding.

The simple fact that the Hinrich move is obvious to so many people makes it far unlikely that KP will even think of it.

Hinrich for Blake and Outlaw, much like Blair over Claver are as Dave puts it, “first dimension thinking” and that is too bad as KP runs on 3rd dimension thinking.

All I know is tapping into my 3rd dimension thinking, is that we are getting one of Paul, Parker or Harris.

BOOK IT!!

Collegiate stats:

NCAA Arizona:
Jerryd Bayless: 19.7pts, 4.0 asts, 3to

NAIA Wisconsin-Stevens Point
Terry Porter: 19.7pts, 4.3 asts, 2.33to

However, I do not see that happening. Heinrich for Blake/Outlaw is a nice unsexy move that makes a lot of sense. Congrats on continuing to disparage the idea based on speculation? You’re own personal bias? I don’t know really. It might not happen you’re right, but I think it’s a good move. Yep, I’m going to go AK on ya’ll and quote myself.

My issue with Steve is his late game performance

Let’s look at some examples:

Indiana – Steve was given the ball on the inbound pass with under a minute remaining, a one point Blazer lead, and Indiana forced to foul. He fumbled his dribble into the hands of Marquis Daniels, giving up an uncontested layup. Fortunately, Brandon made up for this with two free throws.

Houston (Game 3) – Down three and with under twenty seconds left, Steve pulled up from about five feet behind the arc, releasing an airball which would clinch the Houston win.

Clippers – Ugh… not much more needs to be said.

Dallas – Travis stole the ball from Kidd, giving the Blazers a shot to win. Steve hurried the ball up the court, attempting a risky pass into the teeth of the Dallas defense. Oy.

Now, because the the losses are painful and thus memorable, I may be forgetting Steve coming up big in clutch moments. I do remember Toronto. Can anyone help me remember some of his other good moments?

In clutch situations, Steve’s performance wasn’t good all season, as shown by 82games.com’s "clutch" statistics.

In the last five minutes of a game and teams within five points of each other, Steve had the following notable statistics decline:

-His "hands rating" dropped from 28.6 to 13.3.
-His free throw shooting dropped from 84% to 64.7%.
-His passing rating dropped from 11.7 to 4.0.
-HIs FG%and eFG% dropped from 42.8% and 53.6% to 35.7% and 44.6%, respectively.

Just something to consider.

Agree must have a veteran

I still think Bayless can be useful down the line as a starter. A superior stop gap is what I want.

Also pretty much for the same reasons. It would be nice to not have to switch on P&R d so much, he does not give back as much on offense to warrant such a liability on defense.

I'm happy that Bayless now seems to have moved up one position on the depth chart. It's his time to prove he can be the solution going forward.

Cautious strategy: Bayless shows what he can do in summer league and training camp again. If he can’t beat out Blake for whatever reasons, his problem, Blake remains the starter until further notice (one more year on his contract) and then we will see. If at this time Bayless is ready to start, we have solved our problem. If not, the Blazers can decide if they want to move on with a re-signed Blake – Bayless combo or if they need to do something radical.

More aggressive strategy: We bring someone new in now, hopefully either as a veteran “Blake upgrade” with the same plan of Bayless as his backup until he might take over, or even more radical with another young (say less than 5 years in the NBA) PG battling it out.

I could get behind either one. Since you know, KP is always right :)

What I don’t really want is a Kidd/Nash/Bibby/Miller, Blake, Bayless lineup since this way both will get little playing time.

Getting Pendergraph, some redheaded Italian (actually is he a Spaniard?) eurostash and an Australian point guard destined for overseas, doesn’t capture your imagination.

Plus people have Pritchard as some sort of Draft God, so him pretty much playing it by the books and not getting Rubio or something, also factors into it.

Don’t even know if it was a dream but the thought stuck. Now that makes me really sad :-(

I think I would be/have been pretty good (biology at least, physics and chemistry I was good but not really passionate about) and I’m interested in many aspects of it. Yeah it’s hard to say. I know fields I would be interested in, and I also know doctors doing mostly very routine tasks that I wouldn’t like.
I also did social service in a hospital after high school for over a year (neurology, geriatrics) instead of military service. And while I liked the camaraderie with the doctors and nurses and most of the tasks and had no problems with gross stuff the condition of many patients was a bit frightening (Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, multiple sclerosis, traumas after head injuries, etc.) and might have contributed to me never applying in that field. There are certainly fields where the people you treat can be more “gracious” – or that are more technical. A cousin of mine is a very good radiologist in San Antonio, but that is also stressful and often very routine work, and he had a slight tremor that prevented him from becoming a surgeon (I don’t). It’s hard to say from the outside looking forward which parts of a job are really interesting to you, what you would be really good at, etc.

She was a nurse for about a year or two

Back when ya only had to go to school for part of a year to be a nurse. She stopped when she had oodles and caboodles of kids.

She went back when I was in highschool, so she was in her late 30’s. She was older than most but not the oldest. When people tell her they are thinking about getting a career in the medical field, she always tells them to just do the extra schooling and be a doctor. More money, more control, and ya end up doing the same work… though that will likely apply more to the underlings of doctors.

There was at least a 18 year gap from her stopping her short nursing career to her starting med school. It was worth it, but it was tough while she was studying all day and night and going through the years of residency and whatnot.

A guy like you, I bet could find something medically related, that makes as much or a lot more, and won’t have to do the extra schooling and residency. You’re Norsktroll!

Well I could be after my fourth semester now, half the distance (before really working). But that’s in the past, and now I’m more frightened to switch than at that time, and even back then I did some research what it would take and that was pretty daunting.

I might add a biology or genetics course to my next extension school course in the fall or so to get some more feel for it. Mark Cuban advises people and his kids to go into genetics as the next hot field after IT ;)

The wife of one of the Google guys has started an interesting project: 23andme.com
Basic gene tests for $399. Problem is you likely won’t be able to do something against many things you can discover with such a test, and many are just propensities/higher probabilities and not something you really will ever get. But it could be enough to scare you about something long down the road. And I don’t really want to envision employers or insurers screening people with that.

the thing i hated about the doctor process

is it’s 4 years of undergrad, 4 years of med school, then it’s another 6-8 years (depending on your field) of internships and the like. it just takes too long and costs too much IMO

Yeah a high school friend of mine is working to become a neurological surgeon. Obviously he is in the field almost since high school and still not completely there. And honestly, while he is a nice guy back in high school he was not the most coordinated or hard working one. Maybe he is now and will be really good (must be doing something right or they would kick him out), maybe he is just a pretty bad surgeon once he is finished. Wink.

by Norsktroll on Jun 27, 2009 12:02 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, I and another friend (who is working in internal/thorax medicine) are joking about it from time to time. I certainly have no real insight into how good he is in his field. I just know that he had to wait long to get accepted since his GPA in high school sucked, he did horrible work in artistic classes where you need your hands, and in biology he was more interested in hallucinogenic stuff and alcohol than how synapses really worked. If he is really good, he should write a book about how he turned around. Maybe like that “Gifted Hands” documentary, only much weirder with more “The Hangover” in it.

I’m not sure what is the reason behind him other than being a poor version of Travis with more defense and maybe a bit more feel for the game. If they wanted a PF Blair was on the board. Or even Brockman. If they wanted more of a SF Sam Young (could become a James Posey type, Memphis can surely need him) and Jonas Jerebko were on the board.

It seems to support the theory that KP and Nate give a bonus to players who are tall for their position and can shoot pretty well. And he is young for a senior. He could be a good mix. He could be too average in everything and thus never amount to much. NBAdraft.net compares him to George Lynch http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/l/lynchge01.html
DX has no comparison listed, and about as many strengths as weaknesses.

Is that whole “HE HAS NO ACL’s” confirmed? A lot of people have been echoing it in BE but I did not hear anything about it. After all he’s played his whole college career and practices etc.

Secondly he works out he doesn’t work out, does it really matter he is a 2nd round pick. ZERO risk involved. Especially since we already drafted Pendergraph. His contract is so minuscule you could waive him easily if something medically wrong were to occur. Basically there is a LOT of reward to this and not too much risk. After all the Spurs of all teams drafted him.

all over

Truehoop

What caused Blair to slip to the seventh pick of the second round? Concerns about his knees. In high school, Blair tore both of his ACLs and had them surgically repaired. Blair’s scar tissue essentially got re-absorbed by his body and the result left Blair with essentially no ACLs.

link

Some background from Kevin Arnovitz of TrueHoop:

In high school, Blair tore both of his ACLs and had them surgically repaired. Blair’s scar tissue essentially got re-absorbed by his body and the result left Blair with essentially no ACLs.

Although he’s suffered no adverse effects ever since, Blair’s is an unprecedented injury and one that scared off a slew of NBA executives. Though Blair literally has no ACL to tear, some team physicians feel that Blair could eventually develop a nagging issue that could wear him down a few years down the road.

Here’s Dr. Wedro’s assessment:

The ACL’s job is to be one of the knee stabilizers in the anterior-posterior direction, that is preventing the tibia or shin bone from sliding frontwards or backwards in relation to the femur or thigh bone. This is especially important in quick stops and starts. If there is no ACL, then the quadricpes and hamstring muscles need to take over the stabilization role. Good knee stability should be able to be maintained as long as the quads and hams remain strong and in balance.

There are examples of pro athletes who have played with absent ACLs including Philip Rivers in a playoff game for the Chargers. Marty Barrett played with the Red Sox without an ACL and I presume that there are many atheltes who did not know of the injury or chose not to disclose it for fear of cutting their career short.

She Hate Me

by cloudydays on Jun 27, 2009 12:58 AM PDT up reply actions

Just guessing: I would give him 3 years, then one year break for reconstructive surgery, then 5 more

During this time you have a Powe/Millsap player. That’s a risk, but it gets mitigated by a contract that would only have been guaranteed for 2 years at a low low price. Unless whoever was reporting that his MRIs from Chicago were not different from those taken long ago was lying everyone is the face or something much more dramatic surfaced – which I doubt since the Spurs took him and not some GM know to take fliers on guys with questionable skills and health *cough*Wallace.

ACLs are overrated :)

But one more time, If you are going to draft a tweener wouldn’t you pick one that at least has a lot of upside? He played CENTER in college! At least draft a freakishly athletic dude who picked up a basketball 5 years ago, at least that guy has a 5% chance of making an impact.

I'm hoping Ben and Dave and whoever visits summer league can give us a better feel for our draft picks potential

Then again Bayless looked amazing in summer league and Nic looked like “needs to improve: offense” and “2 more years in Europe”. So it’s hard to say. I think for next year I need to take a scouting course, so I’m not a Garden Variety Internet Denizen. I know one where Chad Ford is an instructor. LOL?

Another problem is everyone has biases. There are many good scouts who are wrong on many players. David Thorpe has forgotten more about teaching basketball and scouting talent for over a decade than I have ever known. But he hypes his clients to a point where neutral observers are scratching their head. Who knew Joakim Noah and Tyrus Thomas would ever become so good?

Exactly. I’ve yet to find a way to translate Summer League success/failure into regular season success/failure. They’re just such different beasts.

It doesn’t change the fact that I’d really love to go watch it though. Sounds like lots of fun.

Has there been news how Rudy feels about the Sergio trade?

If not I expect Casey to get to the story when he flies to Spain over the weekend.

I'll miss their alley-oops

I’m sure Rudy will too when Jerryd plays backup point guard LOL.

He could develop a similar chemistry with Rudy

It’s not like Sergio and Rudy grew up together. They played together on junior national teams, never for the same club before Portland.

by Norsktroll on Jun 27, 2009 1:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Jerryd is not close to being the playmaker/passer Sergio is though

Maybe in Vegas summer league we’ll see “PG” Bayless but I can’t imagine he has the ability to make the same types of plays Sergio did with Rudy last year.

It's hard to say how great his point guard instincts are

He certainly is not a complete natural who played it all his life, but neither was e.g. Tony Parker. It’s a very important offseason for him.

by Norsktroll on Jun 27, 2009 1:16 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah if anyone can develop PG skills it should be a worker like Bayless

BUT we’ll see. It’s impossible to tell right now.

I swore I would never so excited for summer league after last year.

Bayless threw some oops to Rudy

Some failed, some worked.

He wanted in on the action, is how I saw it.

Rudy and Sergio dated the same girl back in Spain and it ended badly, so Rudy is glad Sergio is gone.

I heard Sergio would poop in his shoes too

Everyone on the team wanted Sergio gone because of his shoe poops.

Staying up all night is the sport of kings

No less than a variety of well known diplomats, playwrites, and men of science indulge in the practice routinely.

Staying up all night is what seperates us from the common beast.

Mercury is a puppy whose abilities know no bounds

She made the account long ago, probably. But she usually just whispers to me what she thinks. She hates drafting cats, and thinks doggy cigars are “the bomb”.

Someone walked by in flip flops, so the clip clap of the flip flop made her bark is all. She thinks she’s doing good by typing in her bark in Blazers Edge at the same time!

Oh, puppies. What can ya do.

Zach Randolph was almost traded on draft night

to the Grizzlies, for Darko’s contract (And I guess Darko himself would follow). The Clippers reconsidered, and Darko is headed to NY instead.

If Memphis had done that, and resigned Miles, I might have needed to watch some of their games for the entertainment value.

by Timmay! on Jun 27, 2009 8:02 AM PDT reply actions

what other reason do you watch games for?

educational purposes? To distract you from your wicked cocain addiction?
