Is it wierd to anyone else we kept so many draft picks?

Let me first say i am no K.P.(not even in the ball park, or same neighborhood) However it seemed a little odd to me that we kept as many draft picks as we did. Maybe im off base here and please if i am let me know, but it seems to this point the general tone of priorities hinted at by everyone from Bedgers to Oregonlive articles and anywhere in between i have read things is to "trim some fat" so to speak and add a veteran or two. To my count we have (i think) 11 players we are keeping after trading sergio. I know we arent playing our 1st round pick anytime soon but Pendergraf will be, plus Cunningham and Mills put us at 14 players.

Now i guess this works out if we sign Jason Kidd(like i have been praying) and no one else. If K.P. believes Pendergraf can play the Back up PF(is he really a PF?) and wants to plug one more vet into the starting line up......well ok that makes sense. I know some of you are saying "its so we can trade for Hinrich." I just dont buy the Hinrich scenario......Hear me out........Hinrich is young and very good point guard, long term he would rock for us. I personally believe Bayless is our future, to that end signing J-kidd to come in for 2 maybe but not likely 3 years to teach Bayless to play point is the way to go. Imagine it, Bayless with his raw skills playing and learning behind Kidd........i would bet $50 right now that in 2-3 years playing behind kidd Bayless would be an allstar.

Anyways, off of my Hinrich/Kidd rant. To me it seemed odd to actually keep all of these players. I envisioned K.P doing like he has done several times and thats to package several picks for either better or future picks. It did not seem as though we needed 3 more rookies, again atleast from my limited point of view. Let me know what you guys think, am i way off base? Does it seem wierd? Or what?

A little strange maybe. I am glad we got Pendergraph and Cunningham for 1 reason though… Bayless will have some decent big men to pass to in summer league.

Depends on how many roster spots they'll keep

There’s some debate about whether the team will keep 13, 14, 15 guys next year

We know that Frye, Shav, Ruffin and Sergio won’t be back

For now, Pend, Dante, and Mills take their place

But there’s a lot of time left between now and training camp. In a couple of weeks we should know more re: trades and FAs

by two4larue on Jun 25, 2009 9:44 PM PDT reply actions

I think they had 17

or 18 players last year, if you count both Diogu and Ruffin

The team needs at least two more quality vets. They only have money for one more good one

The trade exception might help, but KP will have to pull another rabbit out of his hat

2nd round picks...

equal non-guaranteed contracts…which is why it was surprised when we signed Tauren Green so quick a few yrs back to a guaranteed deal…

I think it's a waste..

to take another low pick foreign guy and “stash” him overseas. We’ve already got two of those guys in Koppenen and Freeland, and both those guys suck so dang hard that they can’t make the training camp roster two years in a row.

by fat27 on Jun 25, 2009 9:53 PM PDT reply actions

Freeland doesn't suck

in fact, he played well enough this past year that he’s mainly going to stay in Europe since he will be able to earn more money for playing less games than he would if he’d decided to come to PDX. Koponen struggled this past season, but again, the kid is 21, so who knows if he won’t be a better player in a year or two since Boykins will no longer be taking his minutes.

but Freeland doesn't help, either

If he chooses to stay in Europe and make more money than Portland has to offer

Same story with Claver. They’re just assets, regardless of their Euro stats

because he isn’t Steve Patterson or John Nash…

The problem with getting

Kidd is that he has gotten really slow the last couple of years. Last season he guarded mainly SGs and did a real good job but struggled to defend PGs. At least he shot the ball well from 3pt land. But I can’t see us going to Preseason with Kidd, Blake, Bayless and Mills. Sure Mills could well get cut but Blake wouldn’t offer us a change of pace that Mills would but then again Blake is far better than Mills. Plus keeping Blake means less minutes for Bayless. So I say trade Blake and Outlaw( as there won’t but about 10 minutes a game for him) for Hinrich. We would then sign a veteran PG to be the 3rd PG.

roster spots

10 guys under contract right now.

Add Pendergraph for 11. Mills and Cunningham are going to have to earn their spots – my guess is only 1 does unless we do some 2 or 3 for 1 trade. don’t forget we are likely to pick up a player or two in FA as well.

How did you guys win that?

hard to get good FAs when you’re on a tight budget. Maybe one good one and the rest bottom-feeders

not weird

I agree with you. I expected less rookies and I also expected to be one of the big names in blockbuster trades. Shows what I know. In the long run, we will be fine, but right now, im dissapointed that we didnt get more done today. When is that big trade gonna happen? Why did we give up Sergio like that? I cant wait to get Dave and Bens take and most of all KPs and Nates take on all the dday action.

probably...

offered our 1st second round pick plus Sergio to every team down the list and Sac was the first one to accept…can Kevin Martin catch back door lobs?

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside.
