Sergio Appreciation Thread
Let's give him a nice sendoff. You were exciting when you were in there Serge, you were good to have to help Rudy get acclimated and I wish you the best! Those alley oops will definitely be missed, as will some of the other sweet passes you pulled off. Lots of highlights for your limited minutes. Rock the world in sactown!
I still need to get to 75 words and I don't really have much else to say. :-( I hope you get some playing time.

Blake did it a couple of times this year.
Sergio just played with Rudy more.
Roy could also zip some alley-oops if he were so inclined.
That would be unspeakably awesome.
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

sorry, I couldn’t help it. Sergio: thanks for the rudy lobs, the behind the back passes. I think you’ll be out of the league in 2 years but you were exciting in spurts and I remember one game in Atlanta that you basically won for us. Thank you for that win.

no way he's out of the league in 2 years
He’s only 22, 23 years old, he hasn’t had a chance for steady playing time in a system and with a coach that is more in tune with his style. I hope he proves you wrong. Total backhanded post in an appreciation thread.

I agree with the other comments here
that your remarks are really not appropriate. Sure, you can say what you want. You didn’t swear or do any of the other stuff that we’re not supposed to do.
But, just think for a second. Is it really necessary to keep harping on how much you hate Sergio, or how he’s not any good, or how he’s become a cancer in the locker room, or whatever the hell is your complaint with him.
He’s no longer a Blazer. Please just let other people say a few words to express THEIR appreciation for him. They know they’re in a small minority. They don’t expect everybody to share their opinions. There are plenty of conversations on BE to join in with. Please find another one.

I am a season ticket holder and I am glad Serg is gone. I had high hopes for him once upon a time, but he seriously wore out his welcome this season.

Being a season ticket holder has nothing to do with what you can say here.
Go brag about yourself somewhere else.
by staylost on Jun 25, 2009 11:05 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Neither does your opinion of what I can say here
Again, this is not trolling… This is post-trade catharsis. And, I’m not bragging about my tixx… Simply stating my credibility as a non-troller.
I’ve always liked Serg, and I like him more now that he is playing somewhere else. He had his flashes of brilliance but they were few and far between. That is not Nate’s fault. That blame falls squarely on Sergio.
He has the potential to be an effective role player in the NBA… Just not for a contender. In other words, he was this season’s Jarrett Jack.
I wish him well (except against the Blazers.)

Suppose you go to the funeral of one of your relatives you were not fond of.
Next, suppose that you go around sharing your opinion of this deceased person’s faults with everybody. It wouldn’t be illegal to do that, You’re entitled to your opinion, after all. But what do you imagine that other people would think about you?
There are times and places where it is wisest to forgo expressing your own take on a subject. Even if you are right.

in fact the Sergio, B-Roy, Aldridge draft got me on board. Regardless of why I like the guy, why I stuck with him and why I think he’ll be good guard, that has nothing to do with anything. Now, although he didn’t become what I thought he would become, he helped get me on board at a great time. That’s another thing I would like to thank him for.

I would love to see a fight to the death between those two.
Mills is scrappy but I think Bayless has the edge here. First, he loves himself too much to let someone kill him and second, if you look in his eyes you can see he’s at least 40% evil.

He was/is a great passer with amazing vision, a horrable jump shot, and decent at best defense. He did not however complain about anything.(save for his agent) There are alot of players who would have caused a distraction, that shows class, and character. He will(i think) have more of a role in sac-town which is good for him personally.

and add I met Sergio personally once near the beginning of his sophmore year and he seemed like a really cool guy. Laid back and very personable. He is a great player and I think one day will find a team that runs a system he can find success in. Thanks for the excitement and helping bring Blazermania back. Before Bedge was a much larger community we used to have some of our longest threads on Sergio and his potential, I definitely had him pegged as our “future PG.” Guess I was wrong. Go Blazers! Tyreke Evans
is a shooting guard in a shooting guards body who happened to have kind of played point guard at Memphis because they didn’t have any actual point guards. He is not a true point guard by any stretch of the imagination. To be fair, Beno Udrih is a terrible point guard. So as mediocre of an NBA point guard as I think Sergio is, he should get a good crack at playing solid minutes, and with a roster that fits his style much better. So I wish Sergio the best of luck. I hope he proves me wrong about the player he is, and I will always root for him

Sergio is a baller
I am glad Sergio was traded, but only because I think he deserves better than what we could offer him. He is a fantastic passer, and I hope he gets lots of minutes in Sacramento, especially once they discover Evans is no point guard. I actually happened to be on the same flight as Sergio when he went home for the summer, and got to talk to him in the Frankfurt airport. Even after all the struggles he had had, he was still very upbeat, saying the Blazers’ hot streak at the end of the year was the best part of his career to date, and that he thought the team did well for how young they were. I was impressed how even though he had had a rough summer, he was very positive on the Blazers. You will always be a part of the Blazers’ rise back to prominence Sergio, and we wish you well in the future.

"We have a different style, a European style," he says adjusting his jacket for emphasis. "They know it's cool.''

I am glad Sergio was traded....
Because I love the kid, I think he has unteachable skills. He plays with flair, passion, and creativity. He tried as hard as he could to be what Nate wanted, even though it was an unwinnable battle. I hope he gets to play the way he is comfortable playing in Sacto. He deserves a chance to shine, that never would have happened under Nate. I think someday we will look back and wonder why we traded him for so little. The only thing that excites me about this trade is that I won’t have to hear people rip him anymore and I won’t need to waste my time defending him. Good luck Sergio, I am rooting for you…

I sincerely wish you the best, Sergio
Go and make the most of a GREAT opportunity out there in Sacramento. You can really carve out a HUGE role on a team like that, where they are struggling to create a new team identity. Impose your game on the team— on the coach, the players, the fans, everyone.
I think at least a part of the “we didn’t get much for Sergio” thang was for Sergio’s sake. We put him on one of the VERY, VERY few teams that have a bad starting PG and Sergio could realistically supplant Beno Udrih as the starter. Seriously— there was no other team he could start and get more minutes for than he got in Portland, unless Nelly stopped wanting to use small SGs as PGs.
This was a move for Sergio and his career, and I sincerely hopes he makes the most of it. I will always root for him.
You’re in as good of a situation as there is in the NBA. KP and Friends didn’t have to do that. Now… make the most of it. No time for excuses. Improve on what you need to improve on, because the minutes are there to be ROBBED and BURGLED with no repercussions.
Good luck Sergio! I will miss you.

Adios Sergio
a good PG that was misunderstood by a coach that played Jarret Jack(ballhog), Steve Blake(choke) and Taurean Green(who was playing in the wort team of ACB) over you.
Buena suerte en Sacramento.

Good trade
I never much cared for Sergio. But the guy did have his moments. Here is my honest assessment of spanish chocolate.
The Good
Very good passer
Decent finishing ability
Court vision
Ok defender
The Bad
Never improved his jumpshot….at all
Ok defender, but not all that
Not a game changer
Mistake prone
Basketball IQ (such as clock management) is questionable.
Overall, I think the Jury is still out on Sergio. He might get a lot better in a different system and turn into the next Calderon. Or he might do the same crap he has done for his first 3 years in the league and never crack a starting 5. I wish him the best, but he has a long way to go to realize the potential that people see in him.

Made Travis look good too!
Last game of ‘07-’08 season. Blowout of Denver, I believe. Sergio twice threw 1/2 court-length lobs to Trout for reverse dunks. The league is about entertainment as well.
Vaya con Dios (but not Rudy)
Gracias por todo, Sergio!

will miss sergio
Many times during the season I enjoyed watching the second team more than the first. Sergio brought some excitement to the team. I think his energy and skills combined with Rudy gave a significant boost in many games where the first team offense was plodding and looking stuck. It feels like Nate just does not like to run much and it felt like he was at odds with the efforts of both Sergio and Rudy to play more up-tempo.
It would not surprise me if the Blazers miss Sergio more than many fans expect. Rudy’s game may suffer for his absence because the play of the second team may become more like the first which does not accentuate Rudy’s strengths.
Clearly Sergio had to go given the circumstances. I hope he succeeds wherever he ends up.

Assist extrordinaire
I find it almost mind boggling that Sergio led or co-led the team in assists 21 times last season considering the minutes. I hope Sergio continues his dime dropping ways as Bayless ignores the open man and drives into 3 defenders in the lane.

I hope Sergio has a stellar career with fans who adore him
and that he proves to be another one of those guys we regret letting slip away.

Using Dave's analogy of a sports bar.
There has never been a sports bar where the sentiment shared here would not start fights in a real one…
The conduct of the many denigrators reminds me of drunken Laker fans outside the stadium after losing a game. The worse part is they appear to have won and still having chosen such a boorish position.
I know we are all Blazer fans, & not just Sergio fans. I am glad you are here to share your opinions on the team. But some of us consider team members almost as friends. Do you line up at a going away party to mock the leaving friend, even if they are just a friend of others?
No. Though some might do it to get a rise out of people, or to garner attention for themselves, everyone knows how inappropriate such a thing would be.
Please, this is not a thread about Bayless, or a what you thought about Sergio vent.
It is simply a place to post appreciations and memories, hopes and happy thoughts, and the simple clever remark.

oh please
I have read most of the posts on here, and nothing has even come close to being harsh or mean towards Sergio. If anything, they seem to be pretty honest assessments of a guy that didnt do a whole lot or live up to expectations. Nobody is wishing harm on the kid. I loved his passing from time to time, but there is a reason we only moved up 7 picks in the second round for him and had to pay Sac town to take him from us.
Yes this is an appreciation thread, but we dont need to pretend that Sergio was something that he wasnt ( a la The media with Michael Jackson). He played hard, had some good games, and might someday be a good player. But his time with the Blazers was underwhelming at best.

Teachable moment
A disappointing number of people just don’t seem to get it. There are only a few possible reasons: (1) cluelessness, (2) insecurity, (3) sadism. I leave it up to you to figure out which category is the best fit for you. This is a thread for expressing “appreciation” for a player.
Likewise, there was just recently a junk drawer dedicated to Michael Jackson. Now, I was not a fan of his. Did I think it would be a great idea to write disparaging comments about him in that junk drawer? Obviously not. Be a mensch.

Likewise, I was not a big Sergio fan. But I did bid him farewell in a haiku expressing the talents he does have, passing, which rival anyone on our current team.

As the proud owner of a #11 jersey
Let me say I will miss you, Sergio. I am grateful that someone with the same last name as me was on the Blazers so that I could get a jersey with my name on it. Also, it was fun to speculate about your potential. I will definitely be rooting for you in Sacramento. Good luck mi amigo!

I was lucky enough
to have 100 level seats the night he “broke out” against Denver his rookie season. He’d been sort of a non-entity up till then, but he really got the fans excited that night. It seemed like he was in the zone – and we were right there with him. I’ll miss him for several reasons (including our shared birthday), but I also know we can’t keep everyone. I hope he gets as many minutes as he wishes … and for once I’ll look forward to watching Sacramento. (Probably the most boring games I saw at the RG this year.)

Do you remember when Lebron doubled as Sergio penetrated to the freethrow line...
…and Sergio drew the ball behind him with seemingly nowhere to go with it as he got pinched by two defenders. He put the ball the only place left: between his legs from the back to the front and then hit Lamarcus with a pass on the numbers as Lamarcus stood beneath the basket by himself. The pass was too good! Lamarcus was completely surprised and bobbled and missed the shot. That’s the way I remember it anyway.
The greatest highlight that never was.
