Who are your Blazer untouchables?

Tomorrow we may be saying good-bye to some of our favorite Blazers.  I am wondering which Blazers do you think we must keep to be part of our championship run and which can be traded or let go in order to get better.

I would be willing trade anyone except Brandon, LMA, Greg, Joel and Rudy.  I love our two big guys in the middle and would hate to see either go.  The other three will obviously be mainstays for years to come.

Anyone else I could see being traded to upgrade the team.

Your thoughts. please.

I think we need to keep Brandon, LMA, Greg, Batum, Joel, and Bayless

Yes, I am on the Bayless team

Yeah, that is my team too… Those are your starters in a year if everyone keeps progressing.

Well, we figure we can’t count on Greg for the whole year so there needs to be 2 centers.

Agreed

I’d love to keep LMA and Batum, but if the right deal came along, you’d have to part with them.

I doubt this deal comes along though.

yep

it’s hard to imagine a plausible scenario where we trade LMA, and to a lesser degree Batum or Rudy, but for the right price, they are tradeable.

Roy is the face of the franchise and a top 10 NBA player. Even if you could turn him into an upgrade (not likely), the PR hit may make it an untenable trade to make.

Greg likely cannot fetch back the value he is worth, and the message it would send to trade him now would set the franchise back quite a bit.

How did you guys win that?

Brandon Roy.

Everyone else is movable for the right price. My order of preference goes something like this:

Brandon Roy
Greg Oden
Lamarcus Aldridge
Nicolas Batum
Joel Przybilla
Jerryd Bayless
Martell Webster
Steve Blake
Travis Outlaw
Rudy Fernandez
Sergio Rodriguez

Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 24, 2009 7:36 PM PDT reply actions

Wow, Rudy that low?

I’m not expecting Fernandez to be a life-long Blazer or anything, but more “touchable” than Travis?

just wow

by two4larue on Jun 24, 2009 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions

It's just my opinion, but yes.

Outlaw is the only guy beside Roy who can create off the dribble consistently. As instant offense off the bench he’s actually more effective than Rudy (IMHO), plus he plays 2 positions while Rudy is really pretty much locked into one.

They are both about the same age, so I’m not sure either will be able to outgrow their weaknesses (dribbling, driving, defense). Has there ever been a 24 year old player who suddenly learned how to take his man of the dribble? I seriously doubt Rudy will be anything more than a really terrific spot up shooter with some passing skills. I’m just not that into him for the Blazers. He also has a little more trade value than Outlaw so that bumps him down my list a little.

I sincerely hope the Blazers move him otherwise it’s probably just going to end in a contract dispute and Rudy will walk for nothing.

In 18-24 months the Blazers will be ’way over the cap, that will the time to sign and trade Rudy

But today the only way Rudy gets dealt is if someone like Devin Harris is coming Portland’s way

by two4larue on Jun 24, 2009 9:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Rudy is 24, so I'm not sure he hasn't already pretty much hit his ceiling.

Which sucks because he’s limited in a bunch of ways that people love to ignore. There was a point when Outlaw was overvalued too. This sort of thing just goes in cycles.

…Travis Outlaw, lately, has been something of a marvel. He has been almost perfect at both ends of the floor in crunch time. He has a reasonable contract. He is young. His vastly improved shot shows he works. And he plays one of the few positions on the floor that lets him contribute alongside Portland’s keepers Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Greg Oden. If you give up a player like that, at this early stage of his career, you’d think it would be for something really special. Devin Harris is a nice player, don’t get me wrong. But he doesn’t knock my socks off like that."-truehoop

by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 24, 2009 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Ok ok Rudy was a rookie adjusting to the NBA's faster and taller players last year.

Also he had never played so many games in a year. I do not believe he has reached his ceiling. He is highly valued right now for some very good reasons. Shooting, the last quarter of the season he shot well over 50% from 3 point land while shooting in bulk. He has great offensive efficiency particularly while playing with Roy. He was able to create as a player in Europe and he said that is something he would like to do more of next year so I am going to wait and see how he does at that before further evaluation. Even his defense is underrated, he may get blown by with fast players and over powered by stronger players but he seems to be able to make plays near the end of games and he tends to play better in bigger games an invaluable asset to have. I agree with two4larue he is tradable but only for the right piece, in 18-24 we will know alot more about who he is as a player and whether we want to go over the cap even more to sign him or if he is expendable, I at least see a decent possibility that he is retain as part of that core we don’t want to break up. Hopefully the minutes will be there

I like this list except for Outlaw

I would keep him in the same spot but move him up into the “if the right deal comes along” category. You better make sure you have another proven 4th quarter scorer if you make a deal invovling Travis. He is much more valuable to this team than Sergio or even Bayless at this point.

Because I don’t think we’d ever get a deal that would bring back an equal level of talent. Maybe Wade, and definitely LBJ, but cmon, like that would ever happen without a ski mask, a gun, and blackmail photos. Everyone else I would consider moving for the right price.

Brandon, LaMarcus, and Greg are all untouchable to me unless somebody of the Lebron James caliber is involved. That’s literally what it would take to part with any of those guys.

Anybody else I could at least envision a few scenarios where they would be tradeable. Some more so than others. Rudy, Bayless, Batum, and Przybilla it would take a lot for me to be willing to part with, but if, say, we were talking to New Orleans about getting CP3, I could be okay with it.

by shighkin on Jun 24, 2009 8:46 PM PDT reply actions

Untouchables

Brandon, Greg, LMA in that order. I just don’t see a feasible deal for any of those three that gives the Blazers an upgrade, and they are the cornerstones of the franchise.

My next group of guys, where they are touchable but the deal would have to blow me away are (again in order) Nic, Rudy, Bayless, Joel, Martell. Except for Joel, all of them have tons of room to grow, and in Joel’s case, even if last year was his ceiling, you need another big who can give you 20-25 mpg. Look at Yao (even more of a physical freak than Greg), a frame that size can’t go for 40 mpg over an 82 game season + playoffs.

Good Question!

My order of untouchable to tradeable goes like this- with the top 5 being untoucheable and untradeable

1. BROY
2. LMA
3. ODEN
4. RUDY
5. JOEL
-———————
6. BAYLESS
7. BATUM
8. BLAKE
9. WEBSTER
10. OUTLAW
11. SERGIO
12. FRYE
13. SHAVLIK
14. RUFFIN
15. RAEF

Rudy is untradeable. And Bayless is the hardest to put out of the top 5 for me. People who say trade anyone after BROY has no sense. To have a main 3 like BROY, LMA, ODEN is rare. They are indisputably our CORE. We build around them.

3. Joel Pryzbilla
4. Nicolas Batum
5. LaMarcus Aldridge

Group #3: For the Right Price
6. Rudy Fernandez
7. Martell Webster
8. Jerryd Bayless
9. Steve Blake

Group #4: Wouldn’t Mind Seeing Them Go
10. Travis Outlaw
11. Sergio Rodriguez

Group #5: They’re Still Here?
12. Channing Frye
13. Shavlik Randolph
14. Michael Ruffin
15. Raef LaFrentz

I would put Aldridge in the untouchable category

because I don’t think there is a scenario in which another team likes him enough to give us an upgrade somewhere else. We just aren’t going to see the Hornets looking to deal Paul or the Pacers looking to deal Granger, or something along those lines.

Aldridge will get all star votes next year and so roughly equal value would be a borderline all star in return. I don’t think there is a borderline all star PG or SF that I would trade him for.

In order of “untouchableness”

Roy
Oden
LMA

Pryz
Batum
.
.
.
Rudy
Blake
Bayless
Outlaw
.
.
.

.

How about just the touchables !

Outlaw & Sergio. Everyone else outside of the Free agents
is a legitimate piece to the Blazers future ! Chemistry folks,
it’s the way you build a cohesive team. Keep the young core
together, sign a veteran FA (McDyess would be a good fit)
or trade Outlaw, Sergio & picks for a veteran defender/ tough
guy. Perhaps Bowen is available. He could at least teach some of the
young guys how to get in someone’s face. He might even have 20 minutes
of lockdown perimeter D left in him for a couple more years ?

B. Roy

Period. The rest of the team should be tradeable if something really juicy is on the table, but the guys i’d only trade if they offered much more that what they are worth of are;
- Greg; I somehow still believe in him. He’s got everything except health, if he somehow overcomes that he could be the next dominant 5 for the years to come.
- Batum; I wouldn’t ask that much for him, but I assume his trade value for other teams is quite lower than for us. He’s got so much projection…
- LMA; I consider him already an All-Star. He should be making the All-star weekend soon.

With a reasonable definition of untouchable - because it's boring to have a 1-player list

Roy
Przybilla
Oden
LMA
Batum

in that order (because Przybilla is about the best value player ever.)

I love Rudy to death but his value is so friggin’ high that if we can get someone really good by trading him, it’d have to be done. I hope he stays around but if KP sees fit to move him, then I trust that we’ll get value.

Batum is such incredibly good value and almost limitless potential (unlike Rudy) – I see him as the SF of the future, and I have a lot more confidence in his health than I have in Martell’s future excellence.

Brandon, Greg, Batum, Joel ( for now ) are untouchable in my mind.

LMA for me is not untouchable, but if he is moved we better get a hell of a player / package for him, like Tony Parker / Deron Wiliams / unprotected first rounder good. People say rudy is untouchable, but unfortunately I think he may be destined for a trade eventually. He is just too good and cheap, and plays a position that we already have locked up, for KP not to pull the trigger on a great player that fall in our lap.

by dario argento on Jun 25, 2009 12:10 AM PDT reply actions

Can't trade Batum

Batum is the Kobe/Lebron-stopper. Got to have him in future playoffs.

I agree with some of the above people, LMA could be traded for a top-level replacement like maybe Bosh. But I don’t expect it. And Przybilla could conceivably be traded, if he brings in a major player and can be replaced through a free-agent signing.

Rudy is high value and not very essential to the Blazers. Love him, but could easily imagine him getting traded.

Untouchable: Roy, Oden, Batum.

Untouchables: Roy, Aldridge, Oden, Przybilla, Batum.

Yes.

Joel might be the best bench center in the league. IMO, he is the 6th man for Portland (even if he doesn’t come off the bench first). The other untouchables you listed could potentially be starters in a championship run. Rudy will never start here and a “settled” six man rotation has not been acheived yet.

I am constantly surprised how attached everyone is to Rudy. Yes, he’s a dynamic, fun to watch talent, but I doubt KP thinks him essential to go all the way, especially if we score a point that can hit the three.

What does a Blazer do? He blazes! Where? Up the trail. Why? Portland dunks the ball! Believe RubiOden will happen.
