Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Apparently Hinrich is telling his friends that he expects to be traded to Portland.

"Chicago Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich is telling friends that he thinks he’ll be dealt to the Portland Trail Blazers, who have interest in pairing him with Brandon Roy in the backcourt."

Via BEdger NoRespert in the poll thread.

Update: Ben has some comments on that thread comfirming this.

I wanna see more of a celebration than that if the trade does go through.

You need to start a dedicated Hinrich fanclub thread and go absolutely crazy in there. Get banned for a day for your jubilations.

After all this waiting you can’t let it happen (if it does) with a whimper. It’s gotta be big time.

+ 60% in salary

But the salary gap between Hinrich-Blake will be reduced as the years go by

As long as we keep Steve, I like the Cap’n Kirk acquisition. A Hinrich-Blake PG “tag team” would be championship caliber

(I’d keep Bayless too, at least through 2010)

A thought from a Hinrich "skeptic"

While some of the Hinrich fanboys have certainly exaggerated Hinrich’s talent, there are several reasons to think Hinirich would be a good pick-up:

1) Improving perimeter defense is a priority for the Blazers. He’s a better defender than Blake. There’ s just no doubting that. How much better? We’ll see.
2) He has playoff experience
3) He doesn’t have an obvious red flags. He will not rock the boat. Given how solid the Blazers roster is, I think a conservative upgrade at PG makes sense.
4) There are not a lot of reasonable PG options avaialble.
5) He is ready to contribute now, unlike Rubio or any other young PG
6) By the end of his contract, he’ll only cost $3 million more than Blake. He’s about $3 million better than Blake.
7) The Bulls appear to be willing to trade him and aren’t asking for untouchables to get him.

I have come around to Hinrich by process of elimination. The other options for upgrading the PG are too costly, impossible, or untested.

I hope I’m not overstating his talent. He’s an excellent role player. That’s it.

Only if frequency of posts translates into

talent appraisal!

I have seen at least one person describe him as “the best” perimeter defender in the NBA, which is an exaggeration, according to he numbers, nba all-defense voting, and common sense.

by PoliSam on Jun 24, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions

I think a couple coaches have said he is.

As a PG he’s probably not number 1, but close.

The Princess of Blazersedge

by Zaig on Jun 24, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

well, coaches also exaggerate...

This year, Hinrich received one more all-defense vote (points) than Travis Outlaw!

http://www.nba.com/2009/news/05/06/defensive.team/index.html

Yeah, if all perimeter defenders are includes, it’s almost an absurd statement—If it is only among PGs it could be considered an eccentric take. Last year, Billups and Rondo were certainly better. Chris Paul (for steals alone) and Deron Williams were probably better.

by PoliSam on Jun 24, 2009 2:21 PM PDT up reply actions

Deron on defense? I’ve never thought of him as more than average.

draft dejuan blair

by Cablinasian on Jun 24, 2009 2:22 PM PDT up reply actions

Deron's been a consistent

“Also receiving votes” guy during his career. He outplays a lot of PGs on defense simply because of his size and length… but, now that you mention it, Hinrich probably is tougher on a nightly basis.

to get both Thomas and Kirk (pre-July)

we have to send out a minumum of $11,000,000 in salaries. Assuming Outlaw and Blake are in the deal, we add the rest of the needed salary in a couple of plausible ways:
Bayless AND Sergio
OR
Martell

Options including Rudy and Batum also work, but I’m going to assume they are not in play.

just because a trade is made doesn't mean it has to be pre-July

The teams could agree to trade in principle now and wait until July to announce.

Of course that would suck for us, having to wait and speculate through a draft that doesn’t go the way we expect. (because Pritch has already made the real move) because we are picking for someone else, or we are picking for ourselves having already filled other needs through a trade

true,

but if they want real savings, they can also wait until after July when we don’t even have to have an equal salaries trade. Then it could be just blake (who they keep as a backup) and a pick now or in the future for both players. The 7 million difference in salaries is their cap savings.

douglast has it right about 'real savings'

If the purpose of the trade (from Chicago’s perspective) is to save as much money as possible, then making the deal before July 1 is the way to go.

Blake+Outlaw+Webster for Hinrich+Thomas saves the Bulls $9.4 million in 2009-10 if they cut both Blake and Outlaw. More than they would save just making the deal after the Moratorium with Portland using cap space.

Sergio: 4.5 ppg, 3.6apg, 1.5TO, 1.6reb, 79.2FT%, 39.2 FG%, 32.5 3pt% (includes all of his halfcourt heaves), 0.7 stl, 0.0 blk, 1.7PF in 15 mpg

So it’s clear that farmar is not leaps and bounds better than sergio.

Looks like a wash

Farmar can score slightly better, Sergio can pass better. Sergio hits FTs better. Neither can shoot for crap.

However, since both shoot so bad, the fact that Sergio is pass first probably gives him the edge. Farmar scores more, but that means he shoots more. Bad shooting = non efficient scoring.

He is not super flashy.

But he does everything right. He is a good defender, Pat riley said he has done the best defending dwayne wade. He is a great shooter. He can penetrate and he is a smart passer.

Sergio penetrates way better than Blake and probably better than Hinrich

His problem as that he can’t absorb any contact when he does.

Right

Hinrich will drive less, but get to the FT line more

(And probably turn the ball over less, than Sergio)

Nate will be in coaching heaven with Kirk/Steve as his PGs

by two4larue on Jun 24, 2009 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Hinrich and Blake would be a good PG rotation.

Nate is looking for consistency and they are near identical in attributes, Hinrich being arguably the better half. It would be nice for the team not to venture to far into having to adapt a different style player so soon, i.e. Bayless.

by dpnim on Jun 24, 2009 3:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I agree that he (Sergio)penetrates well

, but part of that is because people LET him penetrate, knowing he won’t finish. And he rarely burns them for doing so. That’s my big problem with him. Can’t shoot, and can’t score at the rim. Not a threat for that reason. Plus, he doesn’t defend well.

Here's Riley's quote on Hinrich:

I’m going to tell you exactly what I think about him, OK? I think he’s one of the top defenders in the game, in the league. He reminds me of Jerry Sloan, he reminds me of Michael Cooper. And just like the Chicago Bulls whined about Dwyane, who was getting too many free throws, a great defender like Kirk Hinrich gets away with more." “He’s into you, he’s relentless. He has a reputation as a tough defender and he gets away with more.”

Wow. Just wow. That is some high praise indeed. I am officially stoked if he lands in our lineup, especially if we don’t have to give up Blake to do it, but can trade some combo of our pick, travis and sergio.

He had been whining about it in a previous comment,

then he clarified to make these comments about him. He had previously said that he thought Hinrich hurt Wade on purpose, then backpedaled

From a political or dimplomatic perspective,

we’d look at this comment for it’s intended effect rather than for its substance. If he just insulted the guy, called him dirty, he’s coming back with an over-the-top compliment to distract from the insult. That’s not to say Kirk’s not a great defender, but given the narrative, it’s likely there’re other motivations than analysis here.

either fighting through a hinrich pick, or trying to get around a pick while hounded by hinrich.
either way, he had to give hinrich some socks for his footsies.

Right, he had previously said that Kirk grabbed his wrist and yanked on it,

and that he’s always doing stuff like that. But I think that was also the game where Posey leveled Kirk with a cheap shot, so it wasn’t just calling Kirk dirty, it was also deflecting criticism from Posey. (Or it might have been the game that Posey leveled Luol Deng – I remember a lot of “pot, meet kettle” comments.)

Does anyone suspect that Blake's about to hit his stride as a PG?

I don’t know why, but it seems like he’s growing in confidence and is improving dramatically. We hear about PG developing late. Hedo came on strong when he was 29. Nash got better as he got older and the rules changed. Is it unfathomable that Blake’s going to break through to another level?

His mentality suggests that he doesn’t like losing, and is hell bent on improving. I just have a hunch. Either way, I like Blake. I want Hinrich too.

Hinrich not just better on defense...he's just BETTER

One interesting note. Not only is Hinrich a better defender, he is a better distributor than Blake. Until Rose became the starter for the Bulls last year, Hinrich had NEVER averaged less than 6.03 assists per game. Meanwhile, Blake has never been higher than 5,10, and only 5.04 last year, his best as a pro.

In fact, not only that, but Hinrich is just better across the board. Hinrich’s career averages are 1.3 rebounds higher, 1.8 higher on assists, double on steals (1.3 vs. .71) and almost double on points (six points per game higher over his career).

Hinrich is a threat to drive and a threat to shoot. He can run the pick and roll, and defend with the best points in the league.

That said, I still hope we keep Blake to back him up.

I’m not sure where the marginally better comments comes from.

Because we need a point guard who turns the ball over in bunches

Hinrich will not be the missing piece, I am sorry guys he just isn’t it. Look at his assist to turnover ratio (62nd while Blake is 12th), his poor overall shooting percentage, his salary, etc, etc. A good backup yes, a championship PG no.
