Kobe wants Nate!
I was just listening to the Jim Rome Show and he was discussing what the *akers will do with there coaching position. Whether Phil Jackson will be coming back or not. He mentioned that if Phil doesn not come back then Kobe's top two choices for coach are Nate McMillan and Jeff Van Gundy. I didn't get to listen for long so I have no idea what his source is, and if this is old news then I guess I can just delete this fanpost, but this was news to me!
Would Nate want to coach the *akers?
Why in the world would Kobe want Jeff Van Gundy?
Who would you all like to see be our next coach if Nate is lured away by the Gold and Purple?

Can you imagine Nate going to the Lakers to coach and then Brandon Roy going there to play in the back court with Kobe…. Is there really any reason to believe he would not coach LAL if they offered? (Keep in mind the question was “would he ever”, not “would he leave this year”)
If LAL offered him the cash, and he wasn’t bound under contract, I see no reason he wouldn’t bolt.
He’s already done it to a team once. So loyalty likely isn’t a factor.

Nate was picked to teach D to Team USA. Now the star of that team says he would want Nate as his coach. That makes it pretty clear doesn’t it?

First and foremost, those of whom who are afraid that Brandon Roy might sign with the Los Angeles ...
Lakers as a restricted free-agent during the 2010 off-season need to cool their jets. First and foremost, Roy will most likely sign a maximum-level contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers this off-season. Yet, if that doesn’t happen, the Trail Blazers will match any offer sheet that Roy might sign with another team as a restricted free-agent during the summer of 2010 — as the franchise will own his Bird rights — however, the Lakers surely wouldn’t be an option for him, since that organization wouldn’t have the financial flexibility to sign him to a contract tender.
Now, with regards to the actual topic at hand here, it wouldn’t shock me if Dr. Jerry Buss fell victim to Kobe Bryant’s demands and offered Nate McMillan something like a five-year, $50 million contract in the summer of 2010 after Phil Jackson rides off into the sunset. I hope that occurs, too, because McMillan is so hilariously overrated as a head coach that it’s a joke. Oh, and as it concerns Bryant, he may love McMillan’s slow-paced offense and love of wing players, but the lack of creativity in his offense will remind the “Black Mamba” of the dark days in which Rudy Tomjanovich was at the helm.

Sort of the definition of mediocre. When I tried to discuss this matter with you once before, you replied that I “knew absolutely nothing about winning basketball.”
I would appreciate a more reasoned and less vitriolic explanation of why you think JVG is such a great coach. My impression is that he is all about defense and most of his defense is about grabbing, holding, and overly physical play. My impression of his offense is that it is highly boring and repetitive use of the pick and roll. Please enlighten me if I’ve got it wrong. I would also like an explanation of why you seem to dislike Nate so much. Thanks.

Here's a few in-depth comments of mine regarding why I advocate hiring Jeff Van Gundy.
“I’d also be cool with replacing Nate McMillan. I, on the other hand, desire to hire a head coach whose focus is on defense, catering the offense to the center with a heavy dose of pick-‘n’-roll, and having a fiery personality that pushes his players on a daily basis.
http://www.championshipproductions.com/cgi-bin/champ/p/Basketball/Jeff-Van-Gundy-Executing-and-Defending-the-Pick-Roll-Part-I-II_BD-02692.html
Yes, the man who I want to coach the Portland Trail Blazers is none other than Jeff Van Gundy."
http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/5/14/875831/blazers-should-play-more-fast-paced#15745418
“For Greg Oden, I don’t blame this on ‘hands of stone.’
Oden is neither Kwame Brown nor Hilton Armstrong, so screw these stats
Rather, Oden’s problems here are a direct result of Nate McMillan’s idiocy apropos of running a smooth, pro-style offense. McMillan doesn’t understand the pick-and-roll — both offensively and defensively — to save his life; therefore, he should be fired on the spot!
Y’know, I dealt with the ineptitude of McMillan’s high/low zone offense in Seattle—and now I’m done with it!
[…]
Okay, it’s not entirely the coaching staff’s problem that Greg Oden had a poor assist-to-turnover ratio to end the season during his rookie year. Regardless, if y’all want to win a championship trophy in the Rose City within the next few years it’ll have to be on the back of Oden and Brandon Roy. Yeah, the high/low zone offense with a heavy dose of isolation plays does well for Roy now — and I’m sure he loves it — yet, that wont’ win it all in the playoffs when an efficient scorer and astute defender down on the low blcok is a necessary asset.
Seriously, though, the pick-and-roll — both offensively and defensively — must become a staple if the Portland Trail Blazers wish to win a title within the next […] decade; in turn, I strongly suggest firing Nate McMillan and replacing him with Jeff Van Gundy would be a smart, savvy move by the front office."

“This guy might be smarter than Nate McMillan.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcvEP2wCywM
There’s a reason I call for McMillan’s head and dream for the day in which Jeff Van Gundy is at the helm. I dealt with McMillan’s poor coaching decisions in Seattle and, well, I don’t like dealing with them a second time. My hope is that he learns from the mistake of having his team improperly defend Yao Ming [by not fronting the big giant], although the fact that he made it in the first place upsets me."
http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/21/846952/game-2-preview#14489500
“Yep, it’s lame that folks overrate poor in-game tacticians like Avery Johnson, Doc Rivers, and Mike Brown. Yet, at least true legends like Jerry Sloan, Gregg Popovich, and Phil Jackson don’t get underlooked by most folks. On the other hand, however, Rick Adelman, Rick Carlisle, and the Van Gundy brothers — as well as George Karl, although he’s certainly got his flaws — frequently don’t receive enough credit for their coaching skills.
For me, there’s at least five dudes out there who I’d definitely fire Nate McMillian if they wanted his job. Those guys are Jeff Van Gundy, Mike Fratello, Doug Collins, Tom Thibodeau, and Mike Budenholzer. My only qualms with Fratello and Collins are age, so they’d be a notch below the other three men on my list."
http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/4/12/831907/next-generation-championship#14072833
Well, I hope that clears up any questions about my rationale behind why I support Van Gundy.
I, by the way, would like it if you’d cite any quotes of mine, as I don’t recall ever typing that you "knew absolutely nothing about winning basketball." While it seems like something I’d write on here, I couldn’t find that exact quote in the SBN archievs.
For some reason, this conversation reminds me of the one we had about what position Jerryd Bayless was recruited as out of high school by the University of Arizona.

I don’t profess to be an NBA coaching quality mind but I have a real hard time understanding how fans can hate a guy who has accomplished as much as Nate has with this young team. I know that this sentiment will trigger an avalanche of criticism of his slow offense and his lack of flexability in substitution patterns and his penchant for pulling guys after one mistake but in my mind it is results that count. Site all the weakness’ you like but Nate has perfomed. Until his results dictate it he should remain the coach of the Blazers and be respected for the work he’s done.
Go ahead let me have it… I know I am just a recent addition to this community but I feel somebody needs to stick up for Nate against this, in my opinion, baseless attack.

I won't hate on you. I, however, will point out a few things that draw my attention.
1. I don’t mind the slow-paced offense, for it’s efficient in its execution. On the contray, my problem with Nate McMillan’s high/low zone offense is its simplicity, lack of much motion/movement, and relative nonuse of the pick-and-roll. In fact, I like Jeff Van Gundy partly because he’d slow the offense down to a figurative standstill and run plays that implement an effective inside/outside game.
2. McMillan’s substitution patterns don’t necessarily bother me — nor is his tight leash on point guards, for I’m also not fond of dribble-drive combo guards like Jerryd Bayless or turnover prone playmakers like Sergio Rodriguez — though, I do have some trouble with how he’s slow to make adjustments, with the playoffs being a fine example when he didn’t have Joel Przybilla front Yao Ming in Game 1, played Channing Frye extended minuets at center in spite of it weakening the defense, and waited ’til Game 6 to curtail the minutes of an ineffective Nicoals Batum.
3. I believe McMillan does several positive things, but he has a few fatal flaws — which include his inability to integrate post play on offense, the way he instructs Greg Oden to ineffectively defend the pick-and-roll by having him come out and get into foul trouble rather than stay at home to protect the rim, and his rigidness when it comes to making needed adjustments — as a result, I desire an upgrade at the head coaching position in Portland.
All things considered, McMillan is an average coach in my mind. Portland can do better than average, though, especially at the head coaching spot.
Oh, and on one final note, I’m certainly not the most “respected poster” around Blazer’s Edge, since I can be an obnoxious blowhard from time to time. Nobody is 100% perfect 100% of the time, though.

Thanks for not hatin on me...and thanks for clarifying
One question I have regarding the first fatal flaw you listed. Do you really think it’s Nates inability to integrate post play or a lack of an effectiive post option? And is it’s Nates instruction or GO’s inexperience that causes the P&R defense problems. Joel doesn’t get caught the way Greg does so he’s not being instructed this way…right?
I’ll will give you the need for some adjustments part but you said it yourself no one is perfect 100% of the time. I think he will change that as he gets more confidence in his young guys.
I’ll also agree with your lack of condifence in Bayless and Sergio. While I’d like to believe the PG of the future stuff regarding Bayless in my heart I don’t think it’ll ever happen.
I guess the bottom line remains agree to disagree… I like Nate and you don’t… It happens.

On your points
1.) I agree the offense is simple. That said I still believe it had to do with players that were still learning fundamentals. As last season progressed I saw more things in the mix and I was screaming at my screen less. Did you observe the same thing? If so, I think that lends a little credence to this possibility. If it’s not nate coatching to his players ability, then yes… serious issue.
2.) Slow to adjustment. I can’t and won’t argue that point. 100% agree. I think nate learns after the year has gone by, but in the moment… he sticks with his plan. I don’t have a problem in the regular season as there are reasons to do that, but the playoffs are a different game and adjustments HAVE to be made.
3.) I disagree with you on this point. My understand is that Nate is attempting to teach Greg habits now that will make him, and the team, better in the future. I’d be interested in watching how things turn out next season.
Despite all the listed issues with Nate, he still took a very young team and got quite a few wins with them. I do not believe that’s luck. maybe nate sucks at the X and O’s like Phil. Phil had people under him who were amazing, and maybe instead of tossing Nate, he needs someone to compliment the skills he lacks. Nate does appear to have a few strong points as he’s able to make an extremely young team succeed.
Additionally… I still don’t understand why you like Jeff. Reading above your reasoning seems to be based on “I want Jeff because I don’t like Nate”. What does Jeff bring to the table? How is he an all around better coach than Nate?
"Fernandez, to my eyes, is the Blazer who walks that walk most comfortably. A lot of Portland's fans (egged on, dare I say, by their local broadcasters) lament things like how Ron Artest or Yao Ming get to hit Brandon Roy's arms.
But I suspect Fernandez sees all that and thinks: We get to hit arms! Cool!"

I think you're overrating Van Gundy
Forget that he’s a disciple of Pat Riley, which automatically makes him a worthless hack (this may or may not be an opinion).
JVG has coached 11 seasons in the NBA. Know how many of those teams finished better than 15th in offensive efficiency? None. His teams run at a snail pace, but rarely execute in the half-court all that well. It’s why his Knicks teams always turned playoff games into slugfests.
I’ll be nicer to him about his stint in Houston because we never know what could have happened with a healthy Yao and McGrady. I’ll note that he never got along with McGrady, and despite his engaging demeanor on TV always had the reputation as a stressed-out lunatic in New York.
Also, if you seriously respect the head coaching prowess of Doug Collins, please reconsider before I write a 10,000 world comment about how much of a hack he is. Seriously, if there’s one coach who defines “overrated” It’s Doug.

Oh, I won’t deny that whatsoever. In fact, here’s my favorite article on that subject.

So, to add on
You’re basically preaching for the opposite of Nate McMillan, a guy who knows how to coach a physically imposing team. Maybe he’d be better in Portland dealing with Roy, Aldridge, and Oden in their primes, but coaches so rarely change their styles or tendencies.

everyone
saying that if Nate leaves they would be fine with Monty as head coach is thinking to small. He’s a great guy, but come on, eyes on the prize, if Nate leaves, it will be time to get a real head coach with experience and a good long resume.

"Yeah, but Portland definitely is not one of them."

-New Orleans Hornets broadcasters right after a Rudy Fernandez missed 3pter. Rudy Fernandez finished the game with three 3pters on six attempts.

Well,
Nate could go for sure. I mean, the Lakers would pretty much be gift-wrapped to him for another championship. However, I don’t see Nate having as much sway or influence there (within the organization) as he does here in PDX. Maybe this is a huge determining factor.

This is bogus.
Kobe’s #1 choice to coach the L*kers is Coach K.
Koponen - PG of the future. For Italy, that is. Book it.
