What kind of player do we want/need?
So I don't have to read all of the posts, they are all good, what position player do the fans think the blazers need the most? Should the need be satisfied through the draft or through a trade? And should the emphasis be offensive or defensive?
My interest here is to see if the blazer fan community has a consensus on what the blazers need to do to maintain or improve the roster and to see if that perception is in agreement with Blazer management.

For the draft; backup PF prospect - Overall PG

I agree
Backup PF is short-term need; Starting PG is the long-term need
Forward solutions...
1: Keep Outlaw/Webster backing up the 3 & find some defensive stalwart who won’t mind playing around 15mpg backing up Aldridge. Ben Wallace is ideal in my opinion because I think he could teach LaMarcus a lot about post defense & would be great to have him for both our starting bigs to compete against in practice, rather then someone like Frye.
2: Go after someone who can back up both the 3 & the 4. LaMar Odom & Rashard Lewis are the most recent examples of that type of role. Someone like Boris Diaw(Fits better then Turkoglu, costs less too) who I think with his passing would really make the transition to Bayless as our starter much easier if KP goes that route. In the draft, Earl Clark could possibly fill that role.
3: Like Option 1, keep Outlaw/Webster backing up the 3, but move up in the draft for a powerful banger like DeJuan Blair. Who could potentially one day also back up the center spot behind Oden if his ability to play VS big players in college is any indication.
Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley Jr(T)/Jrue Holiday(D)/Rodrigue Beaubois(D)
SG Options: Mickaël Piétrus(T)/Terrence Williams(D)/Paul Harris(D)
Forward Options: Serge Ibaka(T)/Taj Gibson(D)/Ater Majok(D)
C Options: Alexis Ajinca(T)/Bamba Fall(D)

Point Guard solutions...
1: Continue with Blake/Bayless, but perhaps make a move for an excellent passer from another position like Point Forward. It would make the transition to Bayless as starter much easier.
2: If you think Bayless will be the guy in the future but not right now, make a move for Kirk Hinrich to upgrade our PG defense & give Bayless an excellent defender to go up against in practice until he is ready.
3: Go after a PG who is ready to start right now, Mike Conley Jr. This route probably ends up with Oden being more productive then the other options long term.(Just like Memphis adding Ricky Rubio or Rudy Fernandez). Conley/Bayless would be a nasty young & talented deadly PG duo.
4: If you think Bayless will be ready sooner then Hinrich’s contract is up, maybe make a move for a vet in FA like Kidd or Miller.
Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley Jr(T)/Jrue Holiday(D)/Rodrigue Beaubois(D)
SG Options: Mickaël Piétrus(T)/Terrence Williams(D)/Paul Harris(D)
Forward Options: Serge Ibaka(T)/Taj Gibson(D)/Ater Majok(D)
C Options: Alexis Ajinca(T)/Bamba Fall(D)

Better veteran PG than Blake
push Steve to PG #2, where he’d be awesome
1) Devin Harris, distant 2nd = Kirk Hinrich
draft dejuan blair
Brandon Bass
BRANDON BASS BRANDON BASS BRANDON BASS!!!!!!!!!!!! I’ve been saying this for the past two years and I didn’t even realize he was on the market this summer. I would overpay him just because he is the perfect addition for this team. A banger that doesn’t mind backing up a legit 4. He gets dirty buckets and combine him with either Oden or Prz on the second unit and that (helps) solve our toughness problem that killed us in the playoffs.
Do you think
Bass would be happy playing 12-15 minutes/game backing up LMA?
There’s the rub. From Portland’s perpective, Bass would be a perfect fit. From Bass’ perspective, the Blazer’s backup PF role would be no better than what he’s been getting in Dallas
Which is why KP should draft DeJuan Blair. Same kind of player as Bass, but DB’s rookie who can play short minutes and rebound the heck out of the ball. At a fraction of the cost
I Like Blair
but he’s not as athletic as Bass and he’s smaller. Who knows how those couple extra inches in the League will affect Blair’s effectiveness and confidence. Also, who knows if he’ll be available and who knows how willing KP will be to give up something for Blair. Furthermore, we are looking to win ASAP because we are (sort of) the second best team in the West, and Bass gives us the proven boost we need immediately.
