Nick Calathes

I’m not the biggest fan of bringing Blake back for another year, but if we want to stay the course with him and Bayless, I don’t know of a better pick than Calathes. We could still take Pendergraph early in the second, and by all reports, Calathes is a phenomenal passer and projects extremely well to the NBA.

I’d certainly rather do that than trading out of the round.

by Royster on Jun 23, 2009 12:48 PM PDT reply actions

Not like he's on a huge deal in Greece

by SeanyC on Jun 23, 2009 12:56 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't think there's much play style change there

Only in your backup 4, since Blair wouldn’t be taking 18 foot jumpshots. But while I’m a huge Steve Blake fan, I feel like Hinrich is a big upgrade. Blair changes the dynamic as far as your 4, but with Webster returning, you’re not hurting your perimeter game by losing Outlaw. You get a rebounder who will shoot a high percentage, mostly on putbacks and dump downs, and you’re getting a better version of Blake.

Nick Calathes

From DX:

Calathes’ passing ability is far and beyond his greatest skill. He sees the court unlike any other player in the country relative to his size and repeatedly makes difficult passes with either hand, creating easy shots for his teammates. At 6-5, he has great size and therefore can see over the defense – making passes that most point guards in college cannot. His great strength is also a weakness however, as he can get into trouble, attempting unreasonably difficult passes at times, which is why he’s averaging 3.3 turnovers a game, which is 20th worst in the country.

Perhaps Calathes’ biggest improvement from a year ago is in his shooting efficiency, where his numbers are up across the board. He’s making 57% of his shots inside the arc (up from 46%) and 42.3% from 3-point range (up from 36.2%). The biggest reason for this is in his shot selection, as he’s forcing the action less and recognizing when he’s open and what the defense is giving him more. He’s doing a much better job finishing around the basket this season, going from converting just 49% of his shots around the rim last season to a far more impressive 64% this year. This is a big development considering that he’s deemed to be severely lacking both strength and athleticism by NBA standards, yet spends quite a bit of time in the paint at the collegiate level.

Blazers Should Trade Out - Who Buys? (Miami GM)

Rumors had 3 teams looking at the possibility of purchasing a pick. Of course, that depends on whom is available.
QUESTIONS: What teams have retained interest in purchasing?
For those GMs – do they see someone they would like to pick up?

The Blazers do not need a $9 million dollar Hinrich. He’s not that big of an upgrade. The cap space is more useful. If we were to spend the money, it needs to be on an asset that we can try to trade in 2010 or 2011 to acquire a big free agent, or free-agent to be (2010: Carmelo, 2011: Unhappy Chris Paul, Deron Williams.) What would their teams want? An overpriced marginal PG in trade? Sorry, Hinrich isn’t that attractive.

Play like your contract year was last year.

by LimitedUpside on Jun 23, 2009 1:45 PM PDT reply actions

Hinrich is a big upgrade for Portland

The cap space the Blazers have this summer, is a use it or lose it deal. They can’t not use it this summer because they want to use it in 2010 or 2011, and cap space is only useful when you actually use it on someone like Hinrich, just having it doesn’t do anything.

by usmcr3049 on Jun 23, 2009 1:50 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, not using cap space saves you money.

I know, came as a surprise to the Knicks too. welcome to the new economy. The Blazers won’t want to spend $9m a year on an average guy, just to upgrade a bit (but I’m not a Hinrich fan). And in the long run, you are more flexible, because you don’t have to try to trade an expensive long-term contract no one wants when trying to get another expensive player because you can’t afford both. If it was just one year, yeah, give him a shot. But it’s 3 years. No thanks. If we are close to the cap once Roy and Aldridge are resigned, fine. Better than being well over and still not a contender.

Play like your contract year was last year.

by LimitedUpside on Jun 23, 2009 2:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I have tried to dispell this myth

But so far it keeps coming up.
Trading for Hinirch will not put the Blazers over the luxury tax, it won’t be even close. Hinrich’s deal this next year is $9.5 million, while Roy and LMA will be on the last year of their rookie deals, in fact everyone on the roster, (unless there are trades) will be on their rookie deals except Hinrich, Joel, and Outlaw, (if he isn’t included in the trade to get Hinrich). Some have suggested that the Bulls might be willing to take back only Steve Blake’s deal for Hinrich, this would allow them to save a bunch of cash, which they could then use to sign Ben Gordon. If that was the case, the difference between Blake’s deal and Hinrich’s deal, ($5.5 million) would be absorbed by the cap space the Blazers have. Adding $5.5 million to the Blazers cap would place them around $55 million in cap related salaries, they could reduce that number still if they found a FA they wanted to sign, by renouncing their two euro players.

With the salary cap projected to be around $57 million next year, the Blazers with Hinrich would be in the same exact position as if they didn’t sign him. The money is going to be used one way or another, the team will not just “save money”. We may disagree about Hinrich, if he is worth getting or not, but what we can’t disagree on is how a contract like his would impact the Blazers cap, it is black and white.

There should have been a poll at the top and people could vote it. That would have been the most interesting and most realistic way to handle it vs. a post-facto generic “trade out” option…

If KP can’t trade up this year, he’s not drafting at #24.

ATTN: New Jersey

The Portland Trailblazers would like to extend to you an offer of:
2009 24th Pick
Steve Blake
Travis Outlaw

for

Devin Harris
2010 First Round Pick (Top 6 Protected)

by pdxlifer on Jun 23, 2009 2:21 PM PDT reply actions

are we "allowed" to trade BYC players yet?

Isn’t Harris one of those players that would likely have to wait until after July 1st to be easily tradable due his base year compensation status until then?

I think I have the best idea: let's have Dave make the pick.

For the sake of simplicity I say Pendergraph

I just don’t like the idea of drafting another point guard.

I'm with you on that one.

It’d make things much simpler here.

Derrick Brown (Xavier)

Derrick Brown
Power Forward (Rank: #29) | 6-9, 225 | Age: 21
Xavier (Junior)
Positives:
Great athlete, NBA body
Huge wingspan
Explosive leaper
Strong finisher around the rim
Solid perimeter game with 3-point range

Though, I wouldn’t mind trading out of the first round and into the early second round and selecting Victor Claver PF (Spain), 20 years old; 6’10"; 218 lbs and storing him overseas for a couple of years. I might even do it at #24.

by OSU on Jun 23, 2009 2:26 PM PDT reply actions

I thought Brown was a SF

I know he worked out here, but I can’t remember how he looked…Compared to the PFs

by mercymercy on Jun 23, 2009 2:34 PM PDT up reply actions

If Claver goes low in the first round, it could be hard to bring him over

He’s making big money in Europe and stands to make a lot more in the future. I’d like to trade down and get him at the beginning of the 2nd round.

Currently playing the role of the Atlanta Hawks GM in the Blazersedge.com 2009 NBA Mock Draft.

Blazers may need to package a couple of 2nd rounders to move up and get him and then store him overseas for a couple years.

Really impressed by his game and personality. His upside is poor man’s T Parker

Still…He may slip into 2nd or be available for cash or other considerations

Trade Out

If we haven’t found a deal to move up, we should move out entirely hopefully for a future 1st. We can likely get our targeted guys in the 2nd round.

Teague or Collison is probably the choice KP faces if he actually picks the 24. They will both be gone by the Lakers' pick at #29.

diffusion of responsibility has really hurt the Blazers organization this off-season. So much for this failed experiment.. a couple of hundred GMs are, in fact, not better than one.

(Alphabetical)

Chase Budinger – 2

Darren Collison – 1

Wayne Ellington – 2

Patrick Mills – 2

DaJuan Summers – 3

Jeff Teague – 2

Marcus Thornton – 2

Where is it written that you can’t draft a guy you project as a backup? We have a 54 win team. There aren’t a lot of guys who project as Blazer starters available at 24.

For those who want Collison or Teague, most draft observers see them as backups, too.

JP is a big, strong guy who would have a good chance to play real minutes for us next year.
