Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"There's no question Pritchard also is trying to figure out a way to get maximum cap room this summer to use for a free agent or in a trade. The Magic's Hedo Turkoglu gets the most mention, but sources say Portland's real target is Bulls point guard Kirk Hinrich."- ESPN.com

Quote of the day
Several sources surrounding the Kings said Rubio didn’t blow anyone away.

by tominhawaii on Jun 23, 2009 6:58 AM PDT reply actions

What are the Kings going to say?

He was awesome! Memphis and OKC should totally draft this guy!

Rubio will the the biggest bust in the history of any sports draft in the world!

Maybe.

He sounds like a slightly taller Sergio to me. Although he does have twice the boyish charm.

Defense

Rubio is much further along in that category at his age then Sergio was.

Offseason:
PG Options: Mike Conley Jr(T)/Jrue Holiday(D)/Rodrigue Beaubois(D)
SG Options: Mickaël Piétrus(T)/Terrence Williams(D)/Paul Harris(D)
Forward Options: Serge Ibaka(T)/Taj Gibson(D)/Ater Majok(D)
C Options: Alexis Ajinca(T)/Bamba Fall(D)

I know you´re thinking about something as big as the Statue of Liberty.

That would make a very big bust of Rubio. We have to find a place close to the Rose Garden.

OKC has a PG and I don't think Memphis wants another Yi Jianlian-like mess on their hands

But maybe they are just sending mixed signals for the sake of causing mayhem, I could be convinced of that

KP should swoop in and "bail Memphis out"

Since none of the agents of the draft’s top prospects want their players going to the Griz, Portland can send them Outlaw, Sergio, Rudy and #24 and make the decision for them. (Paul Allen could also contribute up to 3 mil to their “Graceland fund”)

After all, they “owe” us for signing Darius and helping L*A win another title, dagnabbit!

Westbrook is overrated as far as being a true PG goes.

He’s a shooting guard who can’t shoot who plays PG.

Good defender, great rebounder, good at getting to the rim. However his “traditional” pg play is mediocre.

I for one think OKC would love to nab Rubio.

And this is supposed to help team chemistry?!?!

is chatting about a Deng/Hinrich deal to the pistons for Prince. Portland would have to give up a good young talent to match that deal. Its just not enough if any upgrade over Blake. We know Blake is a good locker room guy and the team trusts him now. Does it all of a sudden cause the Blazers to take a step back bringing in a slightly different version of Blake?

I try to help with everything," Fernandez said. "If the coach says go rebound, I go rebound. I work for the team.

""If I'm playing this game to get media and attention, I shouldn't be here," Aldridge said. "I'm here to play basketball, and do what I can do to help this team win."

His stare became blank. It was apparent he was back in that place, on the Rose Garden's logo, picking up Aaron Brooks as the crowd nervously roared.

I would not give up Roy, LMA, Oden and probably not Rudy

Anyone else is fair game

And as far as PG rumors go I guess Heinrich is the best I’m going to find. He’s certainly better than Nash and Kidd, The Twin Ancients. Or Conley.

How would that work salary wise?

Detroit would have to throw in Hamilton which would be way too much.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Prince and Hinrich make about the same amount

Also, where do the Bulls put Prince? They’ve got Salmons at SF and he demands starters minutes. What’s the point in getting Prince to back up a position of strength for no cap relief?

The Pistons have the cap space to absorb that.

The Bulls will get a massive trade exception… and Magnum, Salmons plays a lot of off-guard.

noooo

kirk is not 2x the worth of blake, and yet that is how much he costs. people, we gotta realize that after july 1st, Roy and LA are probably going to get max extensions in the 15 mil per range (max 3-4 year extension), plus oden will be due a year after that (ie, $45mil will be invested in 3 players, approximately 75% of the cap space).
we do not need to invest 10 mil per year on a guy like hinrich, that just kills the blazers’ roster salary flexibility. The cap next year is in the $57mil range, which means if we got kirk, then we are looking at over $40 mil to roy/LA/hinrich, with oden due his raise next year. I know PA will pay the luxury tax, but look at all the possibilities the blazers have by having cap room, all of which would be lost by gettting a minor upgrade in kirk. If the blazers want to give $10mil per to someone (plus the talent lost in the trade), they gotta get someone a whole lot better than kirk.

by retirecards51 on Jun 23, 2009 10:10 AM PDT reply actions

Yeah, I don't think Kirk is worth twice the money

but Roy and Aldridge still have their qualifying offers for next year.

"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"

by Magnum on Jun 23, 2009 10:53 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't quite get the money/twice as good argument

If you think the team can take a step up competitively with Blake, fine. I’m not all that familiar with him, but I’ve certainly seen that argument made around here. I see more people arguing that some change at PG is needed. If that is in fact true, do you need double the “worth” at PG to improve your competitiveness? Or do you need 30% more than what Blake can give you (offense and defense combined)? If that 30% extra (and I just picked that randomly, it’s not an analysis of Kirk vs. Blake) gets you to a whole new level competitively, do you pass on it because the cost is greater than 30% more?

You guys hope you are set at most positions going forward, right? And PG is the spot most necessary to get an upgrade? Now obviously, you’re going to want the biggest upgrade you can get factoring in cost and production with fit, so if you can get a better guy in than Kirk on those measures you do that. But do you really pass up an upgrade and stick with the status quo in hopes that something better happens later – and that it is something that requires cap space to do and cannot be accomplished with a reasonable contract to offer in trade (eg, good sized, but nice terms and not overly long) – especially with an owner willing to spend money? It’s not like if your team chose to acquire Kirk now you are henceforth obligated to keep him forever. Blake’s currently on a really cheap contract – I doubt it stays that way, and I doubt you’re going to find a substantially better PG on an equivalent contract whose team is looking to trade him, unless it’s a guy with major off-court red flags.

by Cablinasian on Jun 23, 2009 3:36 PM PDT up reply actions

I understand your fears

but what you are thinking is a common myth here on BlazersEdge.

First, Kirk doesn’t make $10 million per year, it is $9.5million next year, $9million in 2010, and $8 million in the final year (2011). While that might seem to be “close enough” to $10 million, it is a very big difference. Because when the extentions for Roy, and LMA take affect, (2010) his contract is $9 million, then $8 million, $17 million for 2 years is about avg for a real starting PG in the NBA.

Second, Roy and LMA’s extentions, if both are giving max deals, (no guarentee with LMA) would start closer to $14 million, then have 10.5% raises each year. Meaning as they get paid more, Hinrich would be getting paid less, it is a perfect fit.

Third, Roy and LMA’s extentions, however much they are, don’t take effect until the 2010 season, their combined salaries next year are just above $10 million, meaning they would have about $20 million invested in Hinrich/Roy/LMA.

Fourth, by the time Oden is up for an extention, if he warrants a big deal, Joel’s deal will be up, and he will be pushing 33 years old, meaing his salary of almost $7.5 million will be coming off the books.

Fifth, after next year D. Miles contract comes back off the books, that is $9 million gone, just in time for Roy and Lma’s extentions to take effect.

So the myth of adding a player with a contract like Hinrich’s will put this team into the luxury tax hell they just got out of, is just that, a myth. Infact adding Hinrich next year, will keep this team at about the same in payroll as it was last year, above the salary tax, but under the luxury tax. The teams total payroll won’t even go over the $60 million mark if all they do is trade for Hinrich, it is a good deal, and if it is available the Blazers should get him unless they have someone better lined up.

Kobe is not worth 5 times as much as Roy. Price in the NBA doesn't increase linearly.

Also sing with me: Kirk’s contract is declining. Kirk’s contract is declining.

While that of Blake and most guys we could target would go up.
