The Rudylution will not be traded. JD 6/22?

The actual lyrics here.
Can someone post the Rudylution picture in the comments? First one to do so wins a Bedgie.

It's not quite as bad as it sounds!

Star-divide

You will not be able to double team, brother.

You will not be able to let the defense cave in, and cop out.

You will not be able to lose yourself on the pick and roll,

Skip out for beer during commercials, (There is no "'f' in Artest"...)

Because the Rudylution will not be traded.

The Rudylution will not be traded.

This will not be like your Xbox 360 2k9

In brilliant HD color and surround sound

The Rudylution will not show you pictures of K*be

blowing a ********  *********  **** with ****   *********

******** also *** ********* without  ********   ********

and **** **  like a ********** making ****** using  **********

The Rudylution will not be traded.

The Rudylution will not be brought to you by Marca

Tiger Woods, Natalie Portman, or Spongebob.

The Rudylution has sex appeal.

The Rudylution is actually fice pounds thinner

than he looks because he's on television, brother.

Pictures of you scoring 5 points in 3 seconds.

Pushing the lead to 20, and giving us all chalupas.

Or sliding in for the backdoor dunk on a sick cut,

and a brilliant pass by Sergio.

ESPN wasn't able to predict this right

Or figure that the Blazers would get 54 wins

The Rudylution will not be traded.

the Rudylution will not be traded.

the Rudylution will not be traded.

the Rudylution will not be traded.

At first sight,

I thought this was another Trade Drawer instead of the daily Junk Drawer.

Anyways, I can’t believe my i-pod still works. A few days ago I had it resting on the arm of my couch when I accidentally knocked it off and it landed in my cat’s drinkwell fountain. I immediately jumped up and fished it out in about two seconds. I dried it off the best I could and even held it in front of the heater for a half hour hoping that might help. I more or less assumed that the damage had already been done. Then to my surprise last night when I turned it on it appears to be working as if nothing had happened to it. What a sigh of relief. I wasn’t really wanting to have to purchase another one.

Time for speculation on our favorite Spainard.

What will happen with Rudy Fernandez?

On one-hand, he is an automatic fan favorite. Dead-eye shooter, throws down mad-alley-oops, makes passes that no one else expects (through the legs, behind the back), plays with energy, gambles on defense (for better and worse), and is just so darn lovable.

On the other hand, we’re in a position bind. For now, he is only effective as a shooting guard… and we have Mr Roy in front of him, and he needs 35+ mins a game. The pecking order probably won’t change since Roy IS a star and can get to the basket at will. And Roy can play PG or SF, but with limited effectiveness. And Roy sliding over means Batum/Webster/Blake/Bayless is off the floor, which may be tougher to handle in time.

So… what will happen to Rudy? He appears to be too good to remain a marginalized back-up, but definitely you want to keep him around. But if we did move him, there is some serious value there, potential to upgrade significantly at another position.

yea it is pretty crazy

Sometimes I almost feel like I spend more time here now than then. I think it was because really because I don’t feel like I am spending time here during the season because I feel like I’m really doing something (watching the game and in the game day thread, talking over the results of games, screaming to fire nate/trade travis&serge, all that important stuff) as opposed to just messing around, which is what it feels like now.

This is definitely my top 5 thing to do (and lately it has been the top 1 thing) when I should be doing something else. And this “working from home” thing doesn’t help at all.

Lots of speed throughout the order, not just Ichiro and………….

Plus hiring a manager like Mike Scioscia would held volumes, running first to third, taking chances on the basepaths.

what do you mean?

they traded the best young prospect they had for a guy that was a Cy Young candidate the year before, not old power hitters. and signing Jr was one of the best decisions they made. he’ll draw people to the park and help up the revenue. They weren’t going to win anyway, but his locker room influence and the money factor make him well worth the signing.

I agree

The Junior signing was fine— the team is not going to contend this year, they aren’t paying him a lot, its a short term contract and its a good PR move.

The Jones for Bedard trade was the type of trade you should only make if you are ready to contend now, and at the time it was made it was a typical foolish Bill Bavasi move.

Currently playing the role of Phoenix Suns GM Steve Kerr in the 2009 BlazersEdge Mock Draft.

by jksnake99 on Jun 22, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions

i defended that trade

because you win with pitching and at the time, Bedard was coming off a breakout year and was relatively young. He was the piece that would help us contend at the time. Remember they were coming off an 88 win year. But the offense just completely failed in 2008. Plus Bedard got injured, which threw the whole trade out of whack value wise. And now, if they trade him, it’s a complete failure of a trade. which would suck. i hope they keep Bedard.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 22, 2009 11:42 AM PDT up reply actions

that 88 win year was fool's gold

they had a negative run differential. that was not a contending team, whether they thought it was or not. jones has much, much more to give over the next 5 years than Bedard does.

Currently playing the role of Phoenix Suns GM Steve Kerr in the 2009 BlazersEdge Mock Draft.

by jksnake99 on Jun 22, 2009 11:44 AM PDT up reply actions

but trading for a top of the rotation

pitcher would conceivably help you change that run differential, making you a contending team. I agree that Jones has more to offer over the next 5 years though. in hindsight, that trade probably isn’t going to turn out to be a good one, but at the time, i thought it wasn’t a bad deal.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 22, 2009 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

by jksnake99 on Jun 22, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

i didn't read that.

i’ve looked at those blogs once or twice but i don’t frequent them much. i’m a pitching > hitting guy so for the Mariners to get the 2nd best pitcher available in that offseason (Johan being the 1st) I thought was a good move. The in-depth numbers might have said Bedard wasn’t as good as I thought, but I don’t know those numbers. But still, I’d give up a young unproven prospect for a top-flight pitcher any day.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 22, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

A twitter recommendation

Not sure if this is a productive action, or not:

If anyone is on twitter, set your location to Tehran and your time zone to GMT +3.30. Security forces are hunting for bloggers using location/timezone searches. The more people at this location, the more of a logjam it creates for forces trying to shut Iranians’ access to the internet down. Cut, paste and please pass it on. don’t know whether this will really help, but have to do something.

I'm serious.

what’s a person to do on a night when they had to do something, but taped the Blazer game, then on the way home freaking 1080am spouts out the score within 15 seconds of turning the radio on. It’s like not I’m going to listed to a non-sports station, or god forbid have silence in the car. that should teach me to plan things on game nights.

Ever wanted to instantly download YouTube videos and convert them into high quality MP4s?

Now you can. This is pretty cool, no SW to install, only a javascript as a browser favorite/link. Just follow these instructions http://tinyurl.com/3jmboh

I know I sound like a bad spam message, but it really is. I just got me some of my favorite clips that I watched over and over. Just one click, wait for the download to finish, rename file (standard is video.mp4) and done. Works great in full resolution, some look better when you display them in half-size (I use Quicktime).

Mountain out of molehills

Every draft players and teams act like they don’t like or like players. Heck, I bet sometimes both are in on it. I reckon teams say, “Look we’re going to pretend we don’t want you just so no one picks you in front of us.” The Hasheem Thabeet thing with the Grizzlies is probably a smokescreen as well.

I said this in another thread

Would anyone be interested in a dog days of summer collaborative season preview?

There will be precious little to talk about outside of the junk drawers come July and August, so why not get way ahead of ourselves by speculating wildly about the upcoming season. I know it’s way too early to make meaningful predictions, but that’s part of the fun. Plus, there is nothing else with which to occupy our time.

I’m not sure what the format should be. I’m thinking either a roundtable discussion with 10 or so BE “experts” who each give a (short) take on a team for the 09/10 season or having a single person do a (slightly longer) writeup for each team. There are pros and cons for both, but mostly it’s a tradeoff between depth and diversity of opinion.

Exactly!

We don’t allow big trucks through the area I’m in, but delivery trucks are still allowed. So when we hear a rumble, we often look up to check if it’s a truck. Then it’s off to the earthquake site…

The worst one I was in was 5 or 6 years ago (during the San Jose Sharks playoffs). We were in a second floor apartment (with parking underneath, so nothing solid under us), and when the quake hit, we thought a mack truck had gone off the road and hit the side of the house.

by Timmay! on Jun 22, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I think I realized something

You know how folks have gotten bent out of shape because KP could have had Devin Harris? I think after the draft, people are going to be saying the Blazers could have had the 5th pick and gotten whathisname. People are talking about this one thing, in this one thread, like the Blazers already have the 5th pick. I think folks argue for something hypothetical, in trade posts, to the point where they actually believe the rumor.

I can see how they would be so disappointed. Trader Bob created a fanbase full of trade-addicts.

by tominhawaii on Jun 22, 2009 1:57 PM PDT reply actions

The funny part is that it's all rumors

None of those rumors may even be true. We don’t really know if he ever had a real shot at Harris, for example. It was just reported as fact.

by Timmay! on Jun 22, 2009 2:02 PM PDT up reply actions

I don't believe the Harris deal, since the two other involved teams didn't need what we were willing to offer

I do believe there can be a lot had in this draft from owners who don’t want to pay the luxury tax – if you are willing to give them cash, take back a bad contract, give them a mediocre vet for a pick, etc. Credible sources say CFOs and accountants are sitting in the war rooms for the first time for several teams.

by Norsktroll on Jun 22, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh yeah, the underlying financial reasons for trades are the real news of this draft

Another Firefox question

I have the BEdge bookmark in my toolbar at the top of the page and it’s never had one of those nifty tiny icons before, just a generic icon. But a half hour ago I noticed that the New York Times icon is attached to the BEdge link. What happened?

by Corvid on Jun 22, 2009 2:08 PM PDT reply actions

It's a bit of a known firefox problem.

The easiest way is to delete the bookmark and re-add it. There’s also an extension that’s called “favicon” that some people prefer (I haven’t used it). It can add or remove icons to different bookmarks.

If you’d actually like to remove the icon without deleting the bookmark, here’s how to do it. You need to manually go into the bookmark file to do this fix.

by Timmay! on Jun 22, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Hey thanks

Good to know that it’s not an uncommon quirk. I went with the easiest solution, which was deleting it and adding it back, though it didn’t work the first time. The second time I deleted the bookmark, closed the toolbar, opened the toolbar, and added it back. That time it worked just fine.

I should have explained further, my bad

It’ll be worth $3M now or Thursday. So there’s no rush. But if they hold, they might be able to trade the pick and a player for an expiring contract, if a team is willing to up their bid beyond just cash.

They might not wait some other year. But this year, there may be a big effort to dump a contract with the pick.

by Timmay! on Jun 22, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

gotcha

people say selling picks, and I think cold hard cash (or Visa) not expiring contracts since that won’t save immediate money unless there’s a medical retirement in the players immediate future (Mobley, Cuttino)

Could happen

There was a rumor the Nuggets would sell their pick immediately for anyone willing to take knee patient Steven Hunter with it. The teams with multiple picks OKC and Minny (Cardinal) might think similarly with one of their pieces, and the Kings might hope (rather unrealistically) that someone takes K9 and his ugly contract with their pick.

I went from listening to two first-rate announcers, play-by-play ...

man Kevin Calabro and color commentator Steve “Snapper” Jones, when watching the Seattle SuperSonics to two braindead homers, play-by-play man Mike Barrett and color commentator Mike Rice, as soon as my favorite team packed up and headed east.

Heck, I’d gladly listen to the doltish ramblings of Craig Ehlo — who’s amusing in small doses — over Rice’s incoherent gibberish. Lenny Wilkens would be a tougher call, for I couldn’t stand him on the mic; however, his boring monotone voice and bland style would be a nice change of pace compared to the deranged, berserk Rice.

Honestly, though, I don’t get the appeal of Mike Rice. Aside from Rice not being my cup o’ tea, nobody can deny that there’s smarter, more well-equipped guys out there who’d do a substantially better job than him.

Not only do I think Rice is a farce, but the way in which he panders to homerism bothers me. Instead of being intellectually dishonest with the viewing audience, I’d want someone as the color commentator who’s informative, straightforward, and unbiased in the role.

To be frank, the Portland Trail Blazers fan base would be better served with the return of Steve “Snapper” Jones versus the continued employment of Rice. Yet, that’s just my opinion on the matter.

Nope, for I'm still remarkably curious as to why you're so fond of Rice.

Y’know, I have faith that you can add something of substance rather than repeat lines of mine — although I don’t blame anyone for plagarizing my undeniably outstanding comments — as well as act in what appears to be a passive-aggressive manner.

No matter my button-pushing ways there, I’m truly interested in why and how Rice has a fan base. What is it about Rice that attracts supporters and advocates of him?

If you ask most fans of other teams who’ve been unfortunately subjected to Rice’s wretched announcing style on NBATV, they’ll frequently tell you that his over-the-top, homeristic shtick quickly wears thin with them.

I’m personally a fan of objective national announcers who are intelligent and exceptionally knowledgeable about the many facets of the game of basketball, with Hubie Brown, Doug Collins, Mike Fratello, and Jeff Van Gundy topping my list.

Heck, I wonder if it’s that I just have higher standards than most people.

I assume that Mike Rice is a nice human being, but that still ...

doesn’t negate the fact that he should be fired from his job and replaced with someone who’s more fit for the position of local televeision color commentator.

Remember, I’m not judging Rice here based on his merits as a person — since neither you nor I are in a position to do so in any way, shape, or form — rather, it’s strictly an assessment of his inferior performance.

I respect that it can be tough for some people to remove emotion from the equation and view things objectively; regardless, that’s a necessary evil when evaulating a person’s abilities on the job.

When it’s all said and done, I think Rice is a hack in spite of his seemingly sizable fan base.

Either way, though, my dislike of Rice’s announcing style won’t get him fired just like your enjoyment of him doesn’t keep him employed with the Trail Blazers; rather, it’s his bosses who make the decisions about whether or not he stays on the job, which isn’t you, I, Roybot, or anyone else at Blazer’s Edge.

went ok

Took us a while to find parking and such, but she was cool about it. We had a good time. She’s fun to hang out with and seemed to be having at least a reasonably good time. Didn’t get the chance (or, more accurately, he courage to use your kiss/bam/go get curly frys strategy). Gave her a hug and a kiss on the cheek at the end. Left her a message today, seeing if she wants to go to dinner sometime, still haven’t heard back. Not sure if she’ll accept or decline, honestly. Even if she doesn’t though, no regrets. Got a little more experience and had a good time.

Hah, the movie "Moneyball" about Billy Beane, was to start shooting tomorrow

One day before shooting, the studio decided to shelve it and have canceled the shoot.

No complaints from me. Beane’s already got a big enough head.

by Timmay! on Jun 22, 2009 4:01 PM PDT reply actions

i don't see how that movie would have been interesting.

i love baseball but watching a movie about a stat geek and the owner that loves him just doesn’t seem very entertaining to me.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 22, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Just a question: Has that strategy really panned out?

I mean, they might have gotten good value out of their picks and deals, but the team didn’t become exactly earth shaking dominant.

by Norsktroll on Jun 22, 2009 4:05 PM PDT up reply actions

2 reasons

1) having tons of cash like Boson and New York still trumps a lot of Oakland’s work
2) the rest of the league has caught up to Oakland in terms of advanced stats

Oakland had a long run where they overachieved their payroll, but now its getting a lot tougher because other teams aren’t stupid anymore.

#2 is a key point

a lot of the success in the Moneyball Era was the A’s achieving more than was expected based on their payroll. Everyone and their mother know nows that OPS (On Base % +Slugging) is important to scoring runs and the market for that skill has shifted and is starting to price it accordingly, where previously it was undervalued and the A’s could afford those players now they can’t.

by tingeyga on Jun 22, 2009 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

the A's in the 2000-2001 were really really good.

the year that the M’s won 116 games, the A’s won 101. They were employing that strategy then. Of course, it helped that Giambi was a power guy that could hit for average also. But that was a championship caliber team, they just ran in to the Yankees and then couldn’t afford the guys. That was Hudson, Mulder, Zito rotation too. I think it’s on ok strategy, it’s just really tough to implement effectively.

by DrivetheLane on Jun 22, 2009 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions

Of course, it helped that Giambi was a power guy that could hit for average also.

There’s definitely an unwritten thought added to that sentence, related to how Giambi helped the team.

Yeah, but they charge like $100 extra to deliver internationally. No joke.

I have a mailing address in Boston, but then my Mag collects dust :)

Maybe I do the 1 month subscription. But I don’t really care about what rumors the intern of Chad Ford has googled and what new stat Hollinger has thought up. And Simmons’ mag columns are free.

by Norsktroll on Jun 22, 2009 4:52 PM PDT up reply actions

Wohoo, Ford has us taking DaJuan Summers in his latest mock draft. Alternatively Casspi and Jerebko.

This is really valuable info. And I think that’s what KP will identify as our key need: More 3/4 tweeners.

Though I have to admit I’m a bit intrigued by Casspi as he seems to be the closest thing to Turkoglu in this draft. Maybe Claver.

by Norsktroll on Jun 22, 2009 5:17 PM PDT up reply actions

For every Hedo Turkoglu, there's a Vladimir Radmanovic.

There’s even more Damir Markota’s, Ersan Ilyasova’s, and Zarko Cabarkapa’s, too.

by AK1984 on Jun 22, 2009 9:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Anyone know how Ilyasova is doing over in Eurolandia?

I didn’t watch that many Bucks’ games the year(s?) he was a Buck, but during his last season with them I’d watch and I liked how he moved… he moved well for a tall skinny white Euro.

I wondered what else he could go, but he left.

Just curious. I dunno much about him.

Morty

by Mortimer on Jun 22, 2009 9:38 PM PDT up reply actions

He might be an option to replace Villanueva, but I don't know if he would come much cheaper

His numbers are pretty good (same with Fran Vasquez), he also won some Euroleague player of the week/month titles or something like that. When it mattered in the semi finals against Moscow he left me behind unimpressed. 1/2, 0/3, 5 rebounds.

by Norsktroll on Jun 22, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

he's had very good season numbers

10 ppg, 7.6 rpg (5.1 def, 2.5 off). 52% 2pt, 46% 3pt (with an average of 2.94 shots per game).

but he’s a bit inconsistent during top games, apart from Euroleague like Norsk says:
ACB finals
game 1 – 8 pts, 3 reb (12 min)
game 2 – 7 pts, 4 reb (24 min)
game 3 – 19 pts, 7 reb (27 min)
game 4 – 0 pts, 0 reb (14 min)

Blake Griffin, James Harden, Hasheem Thabeet, Ricky Rubio, Jordan Hill, Tyreke Evans, Stephen Curry, Jonny Flynn, DeMar DeRozan, Jrue Holiday, Gerald Henderson, Brandon Jennings and Tyler Hansbrough.

When I got home from ballet,

she told me that she was going to see “The Hangover” with one of our friends. I said okay, thinking I was about to be invited as I am not going to see this person for awhile once I leave for Boston. When she didn’t say anything, I asked her if she wanted me to come and she said she didn’t. I was shocked and a little hurt by it, also by the fact that she never explained her reason for not wanting me to come. A little bit after she had left her phone rings and I pick up. Its our friend asking where we are, I tell her that Ellie left her phone at home which is why I answered and that I don’t know where she is because I’m at home. My friend then said, “I thought you were coming!” I was totally blown away, my sister is a shady fill in the blank.

Stuckey and Rip are mad overrated

If Teyshaun can be on a good team, he’d be great again, but I reckon he’s the sort of guy who doesn’t look as good with badness around him. Thus, his lukewarm recent season.

Unless Rondo is a total tool to be around and everyone truly hates him, he’s worth more than all 3 Detroit players combined. A PG who can defend, create, and score? Just not shoot, but everyone improves as a shooter so it’s not as much of a worry? Why you gonna move that, Aingey?

Just half-watched Step Up 2

While the wifey full-watched it. By half-watched I mean I did some projects while she watched so I wasn’t really watching, beyond noticing the main character girl sure wasn’t a very good dancer and the main character white guy was really dopey looking.

And the “hip hop” dancing looked like Napoleon and (Girl’s Name) who choreograph the “hip hop” dances on Thank You for Dancing (which is what I call SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE). They were so boring.

Lame for a dance movie is baaaaaad.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 22, 2009 11:58 PM PDT reply actions

Your FACE expected anything else

What, a guy can’t share his Step Up 2 related thoughts anymore?

What I did expect was gooder dancing (you can do a billion takes and take long time to choreograph and perfect, plus hide stuff in the edit. You can do fancy crap, not middle school dancing crap). And a gooder soundtrack.

It ain’t that hard to make a good/bad dance movie. Good dancing should be a given.

Morty

by Mortimer on Jun 23, 2009 12:17 AM PDT up reply actions

right

but there also needs to be a good story, or at least an engaging one.

it’s one thing for there to be dancing, but that’s not enough of a draw for me to stick around unless there is some semblance of a good story.

I blame Prez

by cloudydays on Jun 23, 2009 12:20 AM PDT up reply actions

Now a good story I do not expect

None of them got a good story, but most have good dancing I can’t do at home.

All the stories are straight cliched cheese and are just there as a thin framework for dance scenes in the rain. But if the dance is bad, there is absolutely no reason for the movie to exist. That is my half-problem with Step Up 2, which I only half-sorta-watched.

by Mortimer on Jun 23, 2009 12:23 AM PDT up reply actions

but good dancing doesn't do it for me

there has to be some semblance of character development/storyline to keep me involved.

I blame Prez

by cloudydays on Jun 23, 2009 12:25 AM PDT up reply actions

They don't get classified as "dance" movies

They get classified as Olde Tymey Musicals, which are totally different and annoying on their own right.

I am biased against musicals though, because I just usually don’t like the music at all. And how broad they are performed. I like Jesus Christ Superstar though.

by Mortimer on Jun 23, 2009 12:29 AM PDT up reply actions

interesting

i prefer musicals to dance movies.

I blame Prez

by cloudydays on Jun 23, 2009 12:30 AM PDT up reply actions

If I had to choose I agree

I don’t like dance movies, but all I’m saying is a dance movie has NO reason to exist if the dancing isn’t that good.

Since no one is there for the storyline.

by Mortimer on Jun 23, 2009 12:31 AM PDT up reply actions

well yeah

you can’t call it a “dance movie” if the dancing sucks.

I blame Prez

by cloudydays on Jun 23, 2009 12:32 AM PDT up reply actions

But Step Up 2 is firmly in the "dance movie" sub-genre

It just doesn’t have good, creative dancing.

Just like a “comedy” can not be funny. It still counts as a comedy, it just doesn’t effectively fulfill it’s mandate.

by Mortimer on Jun 23, 2009 12:33 AM PDT up reply actions

That's not dancing

that’s cheerleading.

Certified blazer.fangirl

by Roybot on Jun 23, 2009 12:33 AM PDT up reply actions

I would say that it doesn't

Since it isn’t about dance really, it’s a teen comedy built around the high school cheerleading world.

But I’d be fine if it was listed as a dance movie.
