Trade Drawer: What is the Competition going to do?

We do a pretty good job here around BlazersEdge.com of coming up with great trade ideas and following the latest rumors of what other teams might be doing.  Of course, it is always more interesting to Blazer fans to discuss what is going to happen with Portland's Roster, but when we are this close to the draft and probably a boat load of NBA transactions... now seems like the best time for a little weekend Trade Speculation on what we might see out of the top competition from both the Eastern and Western Conferences.

There are a few teams currently riding in the Elite of all NBA teams who could make dramatic changes to their rotations, or maybe simply changes only... these teams are Orlando, Cleveland, Boston, F@kers, Houston, Dallas, and Denver.  Also, there are some other teams on the cusp of really competing among the top ranks.... Utah, New Orleans, Washington, or Chicago.  All of these teams are going to be making some changes, some of them will make close to wholesale changes.....  What are your thoughts?  Trade idea's?  or Rumors that you have heard that seem too good for teams to not pull the trigger on.

Please, if you are siting a RUMOR, link it to your post.

As far as a poll goes.... Who is going to represent the Eastern Conference in the Finals next season?  We already know who is gonna be reppin' the West.... Your Portland Trail Blazers!

As for a Competition Transaction that I want to address... the Dallas Mavericks.  To me, Dallas has the ability to remain in the mix and could become the scariest team in the West (other than Portland) with a few transactions.  Of course having Mark Cuban's passion and check book helps put them in elite company when talking about off-season ability to make moves and improve.   Dallas still has PF Dirk Nowitski in his prime, a bevy of quality veterans and maybe just a few pieces away from being very dangerous.  I could forsee Dallas making a deal with the LA Clippers for Chris Kaman or Marcus Camby, as the clippers need to open some Playing time in the post for #1 Pick Blake Griffen.  Let's say Dallas trades Josh Howard & Pick #22 to LA for FC Chris Kaman, SF Al Thornton and a 2nd Rounder.  Then Dallas resigns Jason Kidd at around $11M per year, and still has money enough to sign another veteran player like GF Ron Artest for around $7.5M per.  Then still have enough money to sign a nice veteran backup PF since B.Bass is likely to move on... call it Joe Smith or Antonio McDyess at >=$2M....

Dallas would be very impressive with:
PG Jason Kidd/JJ Barea

SG Ron Artest/Jason Terry

SF Al Thornton/Jerry Stackhouse/Antoine Wright

PF Dirk Nowitski/Antonio McDyess

FC Chris Kaman/ Erick Dampier

What kind of GM-Genius is out there on BE as we approach the Week of Transaction Pandemonium?

Dude, I know it is way too early to predict this, but....

For the sake of thinking about who Portland’s Eastern Nemisis will be once we are finally in the Finals is a good thing to be contemplating… I mean, we have to know which teams to direct our “Hating” on come draft day….

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 21, 2009 7:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm going to disagree

but only on the grounds that during the summer basketball lull we will need rampant speculation to keep us entertained. Maybe we should get the SBN ambassadors (if they still know their teams) to collaborate on a massive season preview in the dead of summer (sometime after the draft).

For example, I was the Miami Heat ambassador. I would do a short writeup about how the Heat are looking going into the season, how they are building a team around Wade, the potential impact of their draft picks and give a prediction for the season. I’d say we do a 2 paragraph max, submit those paragraphs to the designated “editor” who would combine all the team previews into one fanpost and we split the whole thing into 2 posts, East preview, West preview.

We could call it the way too early in the summer season preview and it would give us all something to do to pass the time. Or we could just do that for the official BE season preview in October. I don’t know.

Yeah, Cleveland is one team that I could see BUY another first round pick....

If they are going to spend money to get LeaBron players, I read on RealGM.com that they are intersted in three players… PG Ty Lawson, SF Sam Young, and Forward Earl Clark…. So aside from having some other veteran pieces around him, LeBron could have a youngin or two on his team.

Recently I have read rumors/rumor-busters about Shaquille O’Neal or Vince Carter… but I definitely think Josh Howard has a good chance to be traded out of Dallas… doesn’t seem like a good fit with LBJ though. Also, Anderson Varejao is RFA, so he might not be back in the post for Cleveland.

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 21, 2009 7:30 PM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking

Is there any way for Cleveland to get their hands on Sheed? I think he would be an even better pickup than Shaq… anyone have an idea on how they could grab him?

Yeah I got an idea....

go way way way way way over the luxury cap threshold and pay out the @$$!!!!

LOL

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 21, 2009 7:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Sheed might sign with a contender (Cavs, Spurs, ...) for the MLE (around $5.5 million). But reportedly he wants $8 mil.

I doubt someone will pay him that. For that money a team can get Villanueva and another minimum salary player, Bass and another player, maybe even make a run at Millsap.

I picked Miami

After they get Bosh from Toronto & if Jermaine can stay healthy(I know a big if) D Wade is next years MVP. Call it a feeling.

by We-B-Dunkin on Jun 21, 2009 7:45 PM PDT reply actions

If this Chris Bosh to Miami thing panned out....

The Miami Heat would be a scary bunch. Bosh+Wade would be a nice tandem…. definitely win lots of games and be able to compete with everyone in the league. Honestly though, I would still want Aldridge-Roy over Bosh-Wade!

Shawn Marion?

Shawn Marion seems like a very attainable player by any competitive team. I have read countless rumors about Marion either not liking Toronto or no being liked in Toronto. His expiring contract was $17M, but his numbers are down and he is on the wrong side of 30 years old. Marion still posted 12ppg and 8rpg out of the SF position in Toronto.

Shawn Marion definitley could make a good team better, especially if they need a versatile swing-man. Any thoughts on where Marion is going to land?

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 22, 2009 1:11 PM PDT reply actions

any team looking to win now

and is not that worried about locker room chemistry

maybe NOH if he comes in at the right price

CLE is always in the run for a player like that

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 22, 2009 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

How much $$$ do you think Marion can garner in this economic climate?

Do you think a guy will take a 50% cut? He is on the down-swing and his numbers and team chem history won’t lie… someone could get a steal… Maybe $9M-$11M for Shawn Marion?

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 22, 2009 4:10 PM PDT up reply actions

I see him

doing a Bonzi Wells where he or his agent misjudge the market and he ends up signing a short term MLE contract.

I think even 9mil is a bit much for Marion’s production with a PER of 15.7 and 16.5 for Miami and Toronto. You could argue his price goes up as he is a vet with lots of playoff experience, but I never remember him standing out all that much, and he has some known locker room issues, which would drive down his price.

If NOH can salary dump Chandler, or better yet Peja or Posey, then grabbing a guy like Marion might be in the best interest of both the player and the team.

I know most of us enjoy to hate-on Zach Randolph...

IS THERE ANY place in the NBA that Z-Bo’s skill set could be part of a winner? Who would want Z-Bo because he fits their system and they could make it work financially?

Randolph can be a 20/10 player , he comes with baggage and has a questionable work ethic, but is there a situation out there where he could thrive?

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 22, 2009 1:13 PM PDT reply actions

Memphis

the owner doesn’t care about winning any more than z-bo

by DucRider on Jun 22, 2009 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

that is a good question

I thought he might be all right with Camby and the +/- with Camby and Randolph is their best. Note that Gordon, Collins, and BDizzle were the remainder of that line up

too bad that combo saw about 10min of playing time all year.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 22, 2009 2:48 PM PDT up reply actions

With the potential of Chris Bosh on the move... Maybe Toronto for Z-bo?

Now I know that I was originally intending this post to be around “relevant” teams… But Z-Bo is an ex-Blazer. After looking through teams scenario’s, I could see the Clips do a sign-n-trade of Shawn Marion ($15M, decreasing 3 year contract) to LAC for Z-Bo + Al Thornton. I figure Randolph could soak up the middle while Andre Bargnani spreads the floor. It could work.

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 22, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

That might not be a bad deal for each team

I had high hopes for Colangelo in Toronto, but his moves have not panned out in the last year, and he seems to be going away from his bread and butter.

It just adds for my hate of Robert Sarver that Colangelo signed an agreement not to poach the Suns coaching staff and thus denied the world the awesomeness of Colangelo/D’Antoni basketball.

I wasn’t aware that the Trail Blazers were going to be in the NBA Finals next year? What planet is this going to happen on?

The same planet

where the F@kers are not going to be able to win anything important without Fill Jackson coaching.

by Portland Dynasty on Jun 22, 2009 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Is this the same planet where Portland hasn’t won anything since 1977 and has gotten taken out behind the woodshed almost every time they have seen the Lakers in the playoffs? I believe the numbers are 7 out of 9 trips if memory serves me correctly. Trevor, Lamar and Phil Jackson are all coming back. No one is going to leave a championship team. If they do, I will gladly come back and take my medicine. Have a good evening dreamers and creamers!

by LAKERJK on Jun 22, 2009 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions

No one is going to leave a championship team

I cant believe a Lakers fan, who may or may not have witnessed a wholesale walk out after 04’, can fathom typing those words.

How relevant is 1977 to 2009?…answer: 0.

Have fun wearing purple and gold…such a masculine color choice.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 22, 2009 9:08 PM PDT up reply actions

You may remember that the 04 Lakers were not a Championship team. They lost to the Pistons 4-1. That is why they broke up the team since they were at the end of their run. This Laker team is not at the end of their run.

How relevant is 1977 to 2009? It says that when fans of an organization hasn’t won anything in 32 years, they should probably not predict that they are going to the finals in 2010.

I will let it slide that you questioned my masculinity, since you didn’t really have anymore “bullets” in your chamber.

Keep it coming jones!

Hugest Overall Question Mark Roster = Detroit Pistons.

There has been so many rumors, they are going to have amongst the most cap space available to do anything. allegedly they are looking at adding PF Carlos Boozer and SG Ben Gordon. Last season’s Piston roster cost $72-million, they only have $33-million committed for next season. Of that SG Rip Hamilton ($11M), SF Tayshaun Prince ($10M), FC Kwame Brown ($4M), PF Amir Johnson ($3M), PG Rodney Stuckey ($1.8M), and GF Aaron Afflalo ($1M) are the pieces set to return…. there really is wholesale changes on the horizon for Detroit after losing their leader Chauncey Billups last off-season.

This situation is particularly interesting as it seems that a few players could get lost in the shuffle of “changing plans” therefore be gotten on the cheap… PF Jason Maxiell who is an RFA and PF Amir Johnson both could likely be had for our Trade Exception. Also, Rip Hamilton and Tay Prince are championship caliber pieces who could definitely help out any contenders…. I bet Detroit flips at least one of these guys for multiple players…

So what about D-troit?
