Let’s see your 09’-10’ PTB roster!
OK, time to choose your Blazers team for the 09’-10’ season - before the draft happens! Tell us who is your starting five and your backups (1 thru 10), how you got these players (draft, free agency, etc. and who you gave up to make it happen), anticipated season record, and how far you go in the playoffs.
Make it realistic – you did not trade Sergio straight up for CP3, or trade a 2nd rd. draft pick for LeBron or K*be. Don't criticize others rosters unless you at least put up your own.
My team would be:
Hinrich/Bayless
Roy/Fernandez
Batum/Webster
LMA/Bass
Oden/Pryz
I would trade Blake/Outlaw + 2nd rd. pick + cash if necessary for Hinrich. S&T Frye/Sergio + 2nd rd. pick + cash if necessary for Bass. That leaves the 1st and one 2nd rd. pick to fill in.
58 wins, win the northwest division, win 1st and 2nd rd, lose in 6 or 7 games in conference finals against L*kers. 1 more year and we’re there!

Hmm...
I would like
Conley/ Bayless
Roy/ Rudy
Martell/ Batum
LMA/ Blair
Oden/ Przybilla
Trade Sergio and Travis to Memphis for Conley and maybe a draft pick
Trade Blake and 24th (amybe a second rounder) to move up and draft DeJuan Blair
I’d say that team goes to at least the second round

OK
Kidd/Bayless/Brevin K
Roy/Rudy
Batum/Outlaw/Sam Young
LMA/McDyess
Oden/Przy
Sign Brevin Knight as 3rd vet PG
Sign Antonio McDyess as 2nd vet PF
Draft Sam Young as a 3rd SF
S&T Kidd for Blake and Webster (Kidd wants to do a S&T plus it clears up our logjam @ SF and PG)
Trade Sergio for a TPE and a 2nd pick

Sergio is worth far more than that...
It’s not good business to give things away for free. Especially since we already have 4 2nd round picks. Although it’s clear from this offseason +/- the only thing that matters is getting Bayless a clean and open shot at the PG spot, and rush him into the starting gig in the too near future (everything considered). Having a better point guard in front of him like Sergio right now, doesn’t allow Bayless his free ride.

The Free Agent Market is Yummy Good, for Us
Going into Draft Day, right?
If I am KP, I might stand pat. I would then trade Sergio and the first and second rounder to (the Knicks or) whomever for their first rounder and get a real splashy PG. I would trade the pants off everybody and come out with everything I wanted. I would cap it with a lopsided trade to upgrade dramatically where we need it most. Wow, would I be cool then.
Since I’m not KP, I’d concentrate on free agents. There are few world beaters out there, but we aren’t looking to revamp. We should fill roster holes, just fix what’s broken. These are all EXCELLENT targets:
PG Andre Miller — The best available free agent at his position. I would charge hard for this guy. He brings it all. For the years he has left, he’d grab our championship window and wedge is open wide.
PFs Bass or McDyess — Either of these players would make an immediate impact at backup 4. Both are great and should come cheap.
SF Matt Barnes — I just love what I see in this guy. If we can get him cheap, why wouldn’t we? I loved how he tried to lift the Suns against us when BRoy was going off for 52. At game’s end, he was the first to congratulate Roy on his accomplishment. With good management and a good team owner, I think he would be a lot more at home.
Going into Draft Day, we’d be loaded:
Miller/Blake/Sergio/Bayless
BRoy/RudyF
Batum/Webster/Barnes
LMA/(Bass or McDyess)
Oden/Pryz
With Travis as a rover/finisher/goofball/team mascot and room for one draft pick.
There’s some trade bait for you, KP. Lopsided trade away. But it also gives us a legit starting PG and the rest of the tools Nate was missing.
by LaoTzu on Jun 20, 2009 1:01 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
So far these are all pretty much reasonable responses
The more I think about it though, the more I think the PG will be Bayless and Blake.
I think they want to give Bayless some run as the backup. So, knowing that, do they get rid of the one guy who can run the offense the way Nate wants it run and who has experience in the Blazer’s system? I don’t htink so. I think Blake is the starter for one more year or till the jury os back on Bayless, whichever comes first.

I think most of us like the roster.
We have the cap space, so I think it would be wise to maximize the asset. Hinrich would do just that.
I have a hard time believing Hinrich couldn’t pick up the offense. First, in the Blazer system, it’s less dependent on the point guard, as the ballside wing initiates a lot of the offense. Second, the high-low zone offense is a very simple NBA offense. A guy like Hinrich, with noted BBIQ, should pick it up pretty quickly.

My dream?
Hinrich/Bayless
Roy/Rudy
Batum/Martell
Aldridge/McDyess
Oden/Przybilla
I would be fine with either McDyess or Blair at backup 4. Hinrich is a wonderful fit for us at the point, with his midrange game, pick and roll play, and defense being an upgrade over Steve.
Sure, Granger and Harris sound nice, but teams don’t deal all-stars easily.

Bingo.
I would try to add Parker, Collison, and Pendergraph at the 11th, 12th, and 13th spots …
Hinrich/Bayless/Collison
Roy/Rudy/Parker
Martell/Batum/(SF?)
Aldridge/McDyess/Pendergraph
Oden/Przybilla
Outlaw and Blake are used to acquire Hinrich.
Finding an additional SF would probably be necessary in this scenario with the uncertainty surrounding Martell. Perhaps we buy a pick to go after Omri Casspi? Devean George? Desmond Mason? Ime Udoka? Dahntay Jones? Quinton Ross? Jamario Moon? Adrian Griffin? Matt Barnes? All are free agents and available. Heck, we could even send Sergio to Minnesota for Ryan Gomes. Some additional insurance would be nice.

I hope (there are more ideal dream scenarios, but realistically):
Hinrich/Miller/Sessions, Bayless, Collison
Roy, Rudy, Quinton Ross-type (2/3 cheap defensive specialist)
Nic, Martell, (Travis?)
LMA, Bass/Blair, Pendergraph/Gibson/Freeland
Oden, Pryz, emergency center a la Hill
Hinrich might be had for as little as Blake, cash and second round picks (Chicago’s own 2010 back)
Miller is the only UFA point guard I would see who makes sense
Sessions would be my dream wildcard RFA candidate, but I’m not convinced the Bucks give him up and not convinced Nate wants to go that route (in his case I wouldn’t be against keeping Blake as his backup)
I fear:
Kidd, Blake, Bayless or Blake, Sergio, Bayless
Roy, Rudy, scrub/nothing
Nic, Martell, Travis
LMA, Travis, second round pick, scrub
Oden, Pryz, nothing
PA in “my wallet is getting thinner” and KP in “I like what we have” mode.

Your fear
sounds alot like my fear. Staying pretty much status quo. If Bayless is relegated to the 3rd PG again, why keep him. Travis as the backup 4 scares me also. No backup for Oden/Pryz would be a direct result of not taking care of the backup 4 need.
I like your picks of Collison, Blair, Pendergraph and bringing Freeland over. Sessions seems reasonable too.

I am down with much of this thinking and fearing
My dream is to get Andre Miller. If we are going to bury Bayless, we might as well trade him if we can get near his anticipated value. With his rookie contract, we probably need to use up some cap space to get a player we would value as much.
I don’t see us getting Blair. McDyess or Bass are both more than fine. Please, KP, don’t let us go into the season without a classic wide-bodied PF under contract.
Sessions would be a good addition as I think Matt Barnes would.
One thing, I think if we have this many valuable pieces, KP would find some team willing to do a lopsided trade, giving us a near all-star for enough of our bench players to fill most of a decent starting unit on NBA many clubs.

do you not
like Kidd in general or just having Kidd and Blake with no time for Bayless behind the 2 vets? That is something I fear too. We have to have a vet, Bayless and a 3rd vet/rook injury backup.
BTW Dallas is in the lower half of pace in the NBA, Kidd has made 166/399 3pters or 46.1%, and can guard quick PGs about as well as those listed above. IMO Bayless is the only PG on that list that has any chance of being able to realistically to stick with those PGs and even then you have to rely on team D with the Paul, Parker and Brooks.
Just saying.

Both
I didn’t like the trade for Harris and a lot of other pieces. I don’t like his attitude and off-court behavior very much (he e.g. pleaded guilty to domestic violence charges). I don’t like his defense anymore, quick guards give him big trouble (a reason why Terry and Billups usually take those), veteran Billups made him look like a sophomore at times, and he can’t defend shooting guards like Kobe either. He hit a good percentage of his outside shots last year because defenses left him wide open playing next to Terry and Nowitzi and Howard and Barea who all are around 40% three point shooters. I don’t like that he constantly steps on the three-point line, otherwise it could have been even more.
I don’t like his fit with Portland, although we do have some athletic players who could benefit from him – if McMillan lets him run the offense. He was bad as long as Carlisle called in every other play, and significantly better once he handed him the keys and let him decide the tempo. His strengths are still rebounding and passing in the open floor, hence he had his best years in NJ playing next to Jefferson, KMart, later Carter. And having him and Blake in front of Bayless or any other young point guard would really stunt the growth of this player. It’s speaking to the ability of Barea that he was able to add playing time with Kidd and Terry and more veterans around.
Kidd had a very good career and is still a capable player with occasional flashes of brilliance when he comes up with a heady steal or an amazing pass, but he fits the system and team environment in Dallas much better than ours.
by Norsktroll on Jun 20, 2009 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
that is why
I would try to move Blake in the move to get Kidd. I fully see the fact that we can only have 2 PGs with any PT and the rest are backups.
Everybody downplays Batum and Blakes 3pt % saying that due to LMA and Roy all they do is shoot open 3s, but Kidd would have much the same role as he did here. Kidd could just sit out at the 3pt line and wait, just as he does in Dal. and he has shown he can convert.
Miller is just as horrible on D as is Sessions, and while Hinrich is an upgrade he still does nothing against the smaller quicker PGs that everybody thinks we have to defend and no one can. We have Batum to D K*be and Roy will pick up any slack.
Nate loosened the reigns last year quite a bit, but with extended playing time for 3 rooks how loose can you let them be? The whole idea of bringing a vet in is that he will know what to do and with the prior familiarity between him and Nate from the Olys, Nate would give him enough respect to run the team as he saw fit, within team/offense boundaries of course.
Besides 1st year coaches will always try to install their system when the team may have their own sets that they know that works even if the coach does not, especially on a vet team like the Mavs.
In addition, yes he is 36 but his stats are not that far off his career #s as highlighted here
http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=12787
As for the offcourt stuff he was plead guilty to a domestic charge back in 2001 and ever since then has kept his nose clean supposedly even going dry in the process. He had a nasty divorce and lots of mud was thrown around, but lots of times that happens when divorce and millions of other peoples $$ is involved.
I would imagine that if you had lots of $$, a public job and were divorcing someone they would exaggerate every little thing that you may have done wrong in your relationship to further their own case for your $$. In the end that is what it came down to.
I see him as the perfect bridge to allow Bayless develop and they most available as well.

by LaoTzu on Jun 20, 2009 4:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
enough until
Bayless is ready to take over full time. I do not think that many teams are going to be signing a 36 YO PG for more than about 3 years perhaps 4 with a team option.
I can see the platoon much like 2 years ago with Blake starting but Jack playing most of the 4th Q and crunch time mins. Blake came in at 29.9 and Jack at 27.2 and Kidd/Bayless are unquestionably more talented than that pair.
Keep Kidds mins down to prolong his career/usefulness and creep up Bayless’ to advance his development. Win-win.

If that’s what you mean, I can see that but only if no other teams we play improve. I would think having Martell back, Oden/Batum/Bayless/Rudy with any amount of improvement would have to be worth at least a couple more wins. A couple decent draft picks could shore up garbage time.

Umm 1 major problem
We lost 2 road games ALL YEAR to losing teams when Blake started. (1 being Philly game that he went down in.)
We lost 3 road games to losing teams in the 11 games that we had Sergio/Bayless.
Sergio/Bayless did good, but we were not a consistent team with them. (We did go like 7-1 at home though, with 1 loss to Cleveland.)
It’s possible that a Sergio/Bayless rotation would become more comfortable playing away from home over time, but if they didn’t… ouch.

Joel and Greg
Trade Machine isn’t right ATM but by my math if we were to trade Outlaw and Bayless and the trade exception we should be able to grab Harris if we take Najara’s contract too 3.25 for 4 years.
Sergio would be traded for whatever.
maybe buy a pick, trade some 2nd rounders, trade our first and then buy a pick to get Blair. Ect. but I’ve been hearing that Harris is on the block to get younger and save some money. Outlaws only got one more year if they even decided to keep him and Bayless would be a nice young PG that could if given the minutes be a good starter by next year with loads of potential.

Milwaukee is bleeding. Portland needs to pounce.
To Milwaukee: Sergio and the #33 pick. After the NBA calendar turns in about 2 weeks, I bet they’d want Blake thrown in to get rid of Ridnour’s contract and Francisco Elson’s contract with the cap space. Then they could waive Blake and his contract.
Milwaukee then could go to the press and say that they have Sergio on par with almost every PG in this draft.

One thing that would certainly make this doubtful is Webster’s foot. The other is the state of the Pistons. Are they officially rebuilding? Or will they try to reload with free agents this summer and make another run with Prince and Hamilton?

Interesting...
I figured I would get shot down the other way. I don’t see Hinrich as enough of an upgrade over Blake to go after him and double what you are paying your starting PG. If they end up making that trade I won’t be upset but I don’t start thinking “contender”.
With Prince, you get an NBA champion who has hit some big shots in big games. He can handle the ball in a pinch, defend the perimeter, run the break, and knows where to be on the court on both offense and defense to be the most effective (my way of not using the phrase “high BBIQ”). He is a leader on the floor but won’t have a problem blending in with the leaders currently on the team. These are all the things I have wanted from TO and Martell for the past three years and that I see Batum being in about 3 to 4 years.
The one thing about trading Outlaw that I have always been concerned about is making sure you get a guy back who has proven he can hit big shots. Prince has done this and brings so much more than Travis for the rest of the game all over the court.

Huge is a huge overstatement...
especially when you figure in value of the contract. Every player has strengths and weaknesses and overall I would say Hinrich is better than Blake. I just don’t think he is a “huge” upgrade. If the Blazers can turn a combo of Webster and Outlaw into a veteran SF who can provide them with penetration, perimeter defense and the freedom to allow Batum to grow into a starter, Blake’s excellent 3pt shooting will cover for other areas he is not as strong in and I am willing to give Bayless at least one more year to show he might be the future PG.

Honeslty,
I’m torn between Devin and Captain Kirk Hinrich as our starting PG.

It's pretty easy for me
we’d have to give up a lot more for Harris, and I’m not so sure I like him better than Hinrich. Kirk’s defense and toughness are what I believe we need.

The thought of landing both Wallace and Harris. But I still want Hinrich.

Here's what my team would look like
Center: Oden, Przbilla, B.J. Mullins
PF: Aldridge, McDyce
SF: Webster, Batum
SG: Roy, Fernandez
PG: Blake, Bayless
I would trade up to get Mullins, pick up McDyce and draft Beaubois with the top pick in 2nd round if he was still there. I think a trade with Detroit to send them our pick @24, Outlaw and Sergio plus a couple of 2nd rounders might get their pick. Mullins would take a few years to develope into a decent back up to Oden about the time Pryz retires. I would look for a young PF next year with the 3oth pick, after we won the championship.
just because there is a mouse in the cookie jar, that doesn't make him a cookie.

I'm the only one who retains the Spanish Connection
Center: Oden, Przbilla,
PF: Aldridge, Blair or meaner
SF: Webster, Batum, Simpson
SG: Roy, Fernandez
PG: Blake, Sergio, Bayless
Coach: Me!!!
I’d take those men into battle and I would guarantee a 8 championship dynasty.
psss…. kp. Don’t listen to these nardawells, keep Sergio for one more year. Trust me.

There we go!

Hinrich/Bayless/Beaubois
Roy/Fernandez
Crash/Webster
LMA/Blair/Pops
Oden/Przy/Bamba
Beaubois with #33, Bamba with #56
Sign Pops on the cheap
Blake traded for Hinrich
TO, Batum,Frye S+T, #47 for Crash
Sergio, #24, #38 for NJ #11 (Draft Blair)
Beauby, Pops and Bamba get tons of minutes in garbage time as we win 59 games (Plus we get the best group of names in the NBA!)
Think this is realistic if you ignore the Crash trade…..just wanted to use all that cap space
PG: Hinrich, Bayless, Beaubois
SF: Crash, Smith or status quo
PF:Draft Dejuan Blair, add Pops

As much as I like Wallace
I don’t think Sarge has a diversified enough playbook to really utilize his best strengths (drawing fouls & getting to the line). Typically SFs in Nate’s playbook are true wing players trying to spread the floor. With a career 30% 3 point shooting clip, he doesn’t bring that to the table.

His advantage would be that he can also swing over to the PF spot in case of need. Better than Travis probably ever will.
His rebounding on both ends is much better, and he is not afraid of contact at all.

Just to add Wallace and give Bayless playing time
Would be amazing. That would triple the amount of rotation players that can actually get to the hole and finish.

2009-2010 Roster
Kidd/Bayless/Jennings
Roy/Rudy
Batum/Webster/Hassell
LA/Bass/Najera
GO/Przybilla
Sign Kidd and Bass in free agency. Trade Outlaw, Blake, #33, and a future 1st round pick to NJ for Trenton Hassell, and Eduardo Najera, and #11. Select Jennings at #11. Trade Sergio for future draft pick to appropriate suitor. Use Kidd to solidify the office and teach Bayless and Jennings how to be a top tier point in the NBA. After the end of 2009-10 season we should have a good idea of which of the two to keep and make our starting point and which to trade. Either of the two should fetch good return a year from now. Bringing in Bass, Najera, and Hassell will add defense of toughness to this team otherwise known as being soft at times.

Please God no mas
Hinrich is just not gonna lead us to the promised land folks. He is Steve Blake, but a defensive one instead of an offensive one. By this I mean someone who is not the full package. He can play decent defense just like Blake plays offense decently but that’s about it. He shoots 41.6 for his career and he has never even averaged 7 assists . I want someone who can actually drive the lane and get to the line or pass to a cutter or out for a 3 ball. I just don’t see him doing this honestly. If the question was who would I prefer to be the Blazers backup PG, Blake or Hinrich I would take Kirk (barely), but not as the ideal starting PG. I would much rather have an offensive stud at PG who is decent on defense than the opposite. All of us would agree that Roy is not a great defender, but to a man all would say he is our best player despite this. Having said that here is who s/b here next year:
Roy/Rudy
Harris or Miller/Bayless
Martel/Nic
LA/McDyess
Oden/Pryz
I think we can can afford to give up Trout, Sergio, Frye, Ruffinman, Randolph and Blake, some of our picks and cash/Salary cap as needed. This team would win the title next year, not in 2 or 3 years perhaps (if we can hold the core together). I am more than ready to have the Lakers and their obnoxious fans to be forced to watch us pick up the Larry O’Brien next year.

Patience.
Blake/Bayless/Collison
Roy/Rudy
Batum/Webster/Sam Young?
LMA/Pendergraph (Blair?)
Oden/Przybilla
It should be clear here that I have no idea what to do with Travis Outlaw. My first thought is to use him to acquire a better backup PF – trade up for Blair, for example. Honestly though I’d trust several of our possible 2nd round acquisitions for 10-12 minutes of rebounding per game.
Point guard is the real dispute here. Before making any major moves, Bayless (imo) needs a full season of backup for us to truly evaluate what we have. I’m passing no judgment now, but he gets a season, and next year if it’s clear he isn’t the answer then we can swing a trade. (Collison just seems like a solid acquisition.)

The correct answers
PG: Tupac/Not. BIG
SG: Eminem/Dre
SF: JayZ/Lebron
PF: Snoop/Flavor Flav
C: Greg “The Illest” Oden (48mpg)
-Tupac and BIG can both run a team. The problem is they will probably complain about PT issues and not mesh very well.
-Eminem and Dre can both shoot, and both get to the lineup well.
-JayZ moves from his natural SG spot to play the SF. He also convinces coach to get his buddy Lebron James as a backup.
-Snoop replaces LMA as the tall lanky guy, FF is stuck on the bench.
-Oden releases his his single Big Bad Knees about a miner who tries to stop a mine from collapsing, but blows out his knees in the procces. It’s an instant hit and allows Oden to stay on the team.

Eminem seems more like a PG to me.
I could see him in the Sergio Rodriguez type mold.
