6/3 Junk Drawer: "She had her Kicks" edition
Kicks, Kicks, Kicks! I like Kicks. As a male HUMAN BEING, Kicks and Lids are about the only things I like shopping for. I love Nike, Lids for Less, and Foot Locker; but I hate every other store in the mall (except for the obvious Best Buy, Fry's, etc.). Honestly I'd rather get lectured by Sophia about using nonsexist language in my writing than spend more than 15 minutes at The Gap, H&M, Aeropostale, Eddie Bauer, etc.
My favorite Kicks I have right now are these LeBron 6s that I got as a present from one of my buddies:
FWIW, I have the B Roy Nike Blue Chip shoes, and those are extremely comfortable, but they can't top the look of these LeBrons.
My favorite kicks of all time have to be these though:
via www.hijordan.com
I love the Jordan XIs, especially with Blazer colors.
Recently, I also got the opportunity to get pretty much any Nike shoes I want for 50-75 percent off (no this isn't because S4E was awesome). What shoes would you recommend getting?
In conclusion, what kind of kicks do you have? What are your favorite kicks? Nike or Adidas?
(Bonus points for the person who can name the movie where that quote is from, and no google or IMDB cheating)

speaking of kicks
One time this transient was being ordered to remove his shoes…under his shoes his socks were literally stuck to his feet. After prying off the socks, he had syran wrap wrapped around his feet that ended up making his skin raw. He peeled off the wrap and parts of skin came off with it along with maggots growing in between his toes. EWW. I wanted to puke.

My throat clenched up reading this. You have to atone yourself by telling us about the best restaurant meal you’ve had lately. .
Today
I ate at Fire On the Mountain…the best effing wings in town…way better than primary Blazer’s sponsor Buffalo Wild Wings. The best part? They were 25 cent wings nite.
My best meal at a real restaurant came at Lake Oswego last week at a place called Kurata – a high end japanese restaurant. I got a 6 course meal including awesome sushi at 30 bucks. It was great.

Nip/tuck had this one episode...
where a lady was so fat that she couldn’t get off the couch, so she just sat there in her own bodily mess, for 3 whole years. Her husband would bring her food, and she just watched tv all day. Her whole lower body became grafted to the couch. She dies during the skin-removal from the couch surgery. So gross….

I think it's an urban legend
I think it was in Howard Sterns book. It has to do with her losing a sandwich in a roll of her stomach. I don’t think I can really share the story here. I’m sure you get the picture though.
When my best man got married years ago, I was his best man
Too him to a strip club out on Powell, and the gross lady did a trick with a match that she kept repeating, and one time she got it lost in folds and couldn’t find the match, and kept looking below her, like she was sitting on it or something.
Nope. She wasn’t sitting on it.
Yuck.
I need help identifying a pair of my shoes
they look just like white low top Air Force Ones, but instead of having that pattern of holes on the front of the shoe, it is a silver and white plaid pattern.
I got them at some outlet for like $20 and i love them, I just don’t know what they are called

It's 11:30
The idea that it is too early for those jokes is silly to me, but like others I worry about it being toned down.
Leno himself is funny but Leno’s writers are AWFUL. Worst sketches in the world. I hope Conan was able to maintain some of his writers or get some of the old ones who moved out to LA to make money.
I still remember his first sketch for the 12:30 show… he was walking around NYC, and different people would tell him that he better be as good as Letterman. He just nods and smiles. It ends with him killing himself. It was funny.

My sister got the shoe gene instead of me. She just loves the heels. Had two foot surgeries when she was in her twenties, and is scheduled for another one. Not to mention the frequent back problems. And her feet are UGLY.

Me neither
it would be way down on my notice list unless incredibly worn or inappropriate (flip flops with sports coat)
As I said in another JD, smiles are what I notice first, but in my youth all my friends noticed eyes. Maybe I shouldn’t say notice first, but it was what they’d mention when they talked about some guy. “He’s got the most incredible blue eyes” was the favorite. My reaction was invariably “he has blue eyes?”
I just weeded out all the no longer needed shoes from my closet and was amazed to discover I still have over a dozen pair. Almost exclusively “athletic” shoes or sandals. My feet have gone south on me, probably because of not being able to find shoes that fit through most of my life.
I love shoes
But I have to disagree here. I notice eyes first. Then how put together they look.

i did say both eyes and shoes in the other JD...then the whole put together deal...

which of these songs is most commonly used in completely the wrong context?
- “Born in the USA” by Springsteen
- “The One I Love” by REM
- “Every Breath You Take” by The Police
- “Fortunate Son” by John Fogerty
Yep
"The match in Los Angeles is a good opportunity to begin to demonstrate that we want to make war." Rudy Fernández (translated)
They've all been used awfully.
Born in the USA was legendarily used in such a wrong manner that it makes the Police song look like small potatoes.
The One I Love and Every Breath You Take were used in wedding so often it’s scary, without every listening to the lyrics.
Fortunate Son is used wrong a bit less often, but context is typically lost with it (a jeans commercial? Argh!)
So I voted yes, ie all of the above. :)
what is the one i love about?
i played it in guitar hero, but i have no idea what the lyrics are lol
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
it sounds like a love song, but the line "a simple prop to occupy my time" makes it about just using people.
the main line is "this one goes out to the one i love"
so its often misinterpreted as a love song. the ensuing line “a simple prop to occupy my time” suggests that it is not, in fact, about true love.
Yeah. "The one I love" is basically being sung sarcastically
The “prop” line is meant to give it away.
Random trivia… no looking it up if you don’t know it:
“The One I Love” had a very well known video that helped make REM’s career.
The directory of photography for that video is now well known for his own show, where he’s the star (and basically the only person you see on the show, other than a few random characters). It’s on cable, and it’s a reasonable guess a lot of you know it.
Who is it?
no idea
i do know that REM’s music videos are consistently awesome, and I am one probably of their youngest borderline diehard fans.

As a public service, TIME's music critic Tyrangiel laid out which REM albums you need to have
I don’t completely agree with all of Josh’s ratings (e.g. I like Automatic for the People a bit better), but just the idea to include that in the review of their latest album as a service to people who haven’t followed every release was nice. Same for U2.

Out of Time wasn't a very good album.
It’s just that it had Losing My Religion on it, which is a requirement to own. Too bad for most of the rest of the album.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
wow
I like AFTP a lot more than Out of Time. I also really like NAIHF and I also kind of like Monster.
Monster's not a bad album at all
It’s just so different that people who like the classic REM sound can’t get into it… and people who like that kind of sound don’t realize REM did an album of it.
It’s kind of in no-man’s land.
Monster was only good for the singles, I think.
Bang and Blame, Strange Currencies, Where’s the Frequency Kenneth? and Star 69 were all good. Didn’t care for much else from it. Then again, I got it for $1 at the CD Exchange, so I’d say it was a fair price.
Yes! Yes! In the face!
I love Strange Currencies and What's the Frequency Kenneth.
I also really like “Let Me In” and “I Took Your Name.”
Yep, Strange Currencies always gets missed
For the most part, I like the album. There’s a song or two I like less.. but that happens with any album.
I saw them in Berkeley about a year ago
They did a fantastic version of “Let Me In.” One of the best songs of the show, I thought.
Never had a chance to see them live
It may be time to pull that album out though. Now I’m in the mood to listen to it.
funny
I’m not a concert goer, but I think I’ve seen REM three times.
It’s hard to be an REM snob at their concerts, though, and be surrounded by 20 year olds who know the words to about 2 songs.
But the new songs all sound the same to me, oh well.
I like Green

yes. that's not my favorite REM album, but Orange Crush is fantastic.
I also like “World Leader Pretend” and “Turn You Inside Out.”
I hear ya.
Born in the USA probably does win.
But I’m old and the Police song I believe actually predates USA

Here's what I posted over in the old junk drawer, about comic strips
As far as simple collections, yeah, I got Get Fuzzy, Bloom County, Outland, Dilbert, Pogo, old Popeye is awesome (back when EC Segar did it), Maakies, Sock Monkey, uhhh, lemme look in my office…
Krazy Kat, I got every Tintin book, hmmm… I know I left a bunch in Portland cause I got too many books.
M
PS: I re-posted it because it takes a half hour to load the old junk drawer.
I've got 'em open in two tabs at the moment.
Since the conversations have been going back and forth.
Nice list. I may have to check a few out. I think the only other ones I hit are Peanuts (classics) and FoxTrot, now Sundays only.
Bloom County became Outland
That was my favorite as a lil’ kid… with Opus the penguin and whatnot.
I like the style of Krazy Kat but it isn’t all THAT funny. Pogo is still funny and one of the first comics to introduce political humor into the dailies, and the old Popeye seems very modern with it’s ironic sense of humor and post-modern jokeries.
I do mild cartooning for fun.
Tried out Pearls Before Swine?
I’ve had trouble getting into it, but most people love it, and it’s won lots of awards.
I’d try cartooning, but it would require some ability to draw and/or be witty. Ever get anything published?
I love PBS
And I’m a freelance political cartoonist.
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

My grandma HATED Republicans (not the one who embezzled and murdered, my other grandma), and always said she’d rather shoot herself in the head before she voted Republican.
SO, ANYWAYS, she’d always get me to draw cartoons for her, political ones, when I was like 6 or 7. They’d be really dumb, like a drawing of Reagan saying stuff like “I am so dumb” and “I eat boogers” and I would have boogers falling out of his nose and into his mouth.
When the Exxon Valdez thing happened, she wanted me to do one about it, so I drew George Bush paying off the captain and saying something like “THANKS FOR SPILLING THAT OIL. HOPEFULLY THIS WILL KILL THE BROCCOLI CROP FOR THIS YEAR” (he hated broccoli, you see).
You can have either one of those for free!

Oh, Pearls Before Swine is cute
I don’t own any of it.
I had a weekly strip back in college, won some awards, “best cartoonist in Oregon” one year even. I’ve thought about doing a daily for funsies, but I’m pretty busy.
I am only an okay artist, but my style is cute enough and I can be funny.
Nope!
And it all sucks now anyways. Too colleg-y and lame. If it was online I would take it down.
I am hard on myself, with old stuff at least. I could do a lot better now, though I would have to practice my drawerering. I doodle every day (I do it constantly), but actual drawing good-like I am way out of practice.
The drawings ain’t nuthin’ fancy, round eyes and heads, skinny limbs, big bellies. Most other cartoonists are better artists, probably.

Assuming you liked anyone at the speed dating thing, WHAT did you like about them?
Do they have any way to know if someone is married? That part is very important to know for a friend of mine. You don’t know him, he’s a famous model in Canada though.
the thing with speed dating...
… is that the things that attract me (ie intelligence, ability to laugh at dumb jokes, etc.) are impossible to gauge in 3 minutes. All you are able to tell is (a) how physically attractive someone is, and (b) are they a good conversationalist… and even (b) is no sure thing, because whether or not you find a topic of mutual interest in 3 minutes is a crapshoot.
So… the people that I said I was interested in were those that seemed bright and we were able to have (or at least begin) an interesting conversation.
I think smarts is the purtiest thing about a dame too
And 2nd is thinking I actually say funny things, even when I go too far (in real life I can go reeeeaaaaal far).
If a girl is “pretty” but I realize she is dumb, she becomes not attractive to me. I just don’t like it.
And the 3rd thing I like about a dame, after smarts and humor, is that she is a sexy black female. That narrows it right down and trims a lot of the fat to choose from for a mate.

Tina Fey is wonderful

Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace: "Unless we find out that Griffin has two heads or something like that in his physical examination, it's a pretty straight-forward decision."
She was great in Ghost Town.
I’ve always enjoyed Tina Fey. Sometimes I think it’s a man thing. My wife doesn’t really like her… but seems to always soften her stance after watching a few episodes of 30 Rock.
I’ve become amazingly bored of Sarah Silverman’s schtick.
For some reason, when I think of Sarah Silverman...
I think of her two or three lines in “There’s Something About Mary”, or her flirting with Tom Paris on Star Trek: Voyager.
Her stand-up is rarely memorable for me.
She's doing blue comedy that males did in the 80's
That’s it.
Sarah Silverman is… ugh.
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
I think she goes a lot further
Because she can ‘get away with it’.
Like I said, I can see people not liking it, but I think when she’s good she can be really good. And her tv show is really good.
Her stand up movie, Jesus is Magic, was pretty awful though… ESPECIALLY the acted segments.
One of my sisters reminds me of Tina Fey
Not in look, but attitude. She is like her character on 30 Rock.
Most ladies I know like Tina Fey! I think your wife is wrong. Geez.
My wife is always tough on female artists
Singers, writers, actors, doesn’t matter. She tends to have real high expectations of them. It’s impressive that Tina Fey has made progress with her. :)
Oooohh yeah.
I forget about her sometimes, but yes.
She’s actually #1 for me.

I love how she sticks to character.
I know less than half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.
I like 'em all
I’d say Tina Fey is funnier since she is the one writing it for herself and others.

He lived here for a while when he was a Simpsons writer.
WHY DOES HE LIE RIGHT TO MY FACE THROUGH THE TV BOX SET.
Yeah, but he was poor back then

He's young!
He just got drafted elected a few months ago! And he only played college ball was in the Senate for a couple of years. Before that he was in high school a community organizer for goodness sakes. And you can’t discount the unfortunate microfracture surgury fact that he had to operate in the Chicago political machine environment.
He’ll be fine! Just be patient.

A TUG-OF-WAR in Shenzhen turned nasty when one of the contestants had his hand severed in a freak accident.
The man, surnamed Shi, a deputy general manager at a night club was celebrating the Dragon Boat Festival with colleagues on a beach at 4.30am, according to the Southern Metropolitan Daily.
Shi, 1.8 meters tall and 34-years-old, was the anchorman in his five-man team and had coiled the rope around his hand several times for stability, letting the rest of the rope fall to the ground.
It was a fierce competition with everyone pulling as hard as they could when excited spectators suddenly joined in, grabbing the end of the rope near Shi.
Suddenly Shi screamed and fainted and his severed hand fell to the ground.
Shi was rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to the Guangzhou Peace Hand Surgery Hospital for a seven-hour operation. Shi’s family now has to wait 10 days to see whether he will be able to use his hand at all or even if the reattachment will work. Even if the surgery succeeds, all the functions of the hand will not be restored, Liang Min, the director of the hospital, said.
I bet I know right where that happened. And yes, in SZ lots of peeps hang on the beach at 4:30AM. Chinese cities don’t sleep. Fun! Except losing the hand thing…

Shoes
I’m rockin’ the Keens today. Rocking them hard.
I can’t think of any Blazer related opinions today, other than I wouldn’t include Rudy in a trade for Prince.
I don't know if I even know what brand of shoes I have on.
I bought them because they are black and they don’t have laces. I hate tying shoes. Couldn’t ever quite get that “through the rabbit hole” concept. WHAT RABBIT ARE THEY TALKING ABOUT???
The original Jordans
I’m not a fan of these shiny shoes. I prefer my patterns simple and timeless and not faddy.
Those black jordans were comfortable, styling, and classic.

I wore hats occassionally before I started going bald
Now I wear hats more than occasionally. My bald spot is such that I considered “becoming more a more religious Jew” and wearing a yarmulke all the time. Decided not to do so. I’m convinced yarmulkes were designed by a balding Jewish dude.

I was the opposite
I always had lame hair that has callics all over and was thin and dumb, so I wore hats even though they annoyed me.
Now that I am balding, I never wear a hat unless I’m gonna be in the sun a long time (I got hair on the top of my head but my hair is baby thin hair, so the sun goes right through it).
I’m big on balding gracefully, and I didn’t wanna be one of those dudes who is ashamed of being bald and wears a hat all the time.
I think using that spray on hair stuff that RonCo sold in the 90’s technically qualifies as a yarmulke!

I used to be pretty materialistic and shallow as a kid, i remember going to disneyworld and judging everyone by their shoes. Don’t get me wrong, i like wearing cool looking shoes, i just get tired of paying too much for stuff. I have a couple pairs of converse allstars, a couple of nicer clarks (loafers, and other ones), and a pair of sambas. I need to get some sandals but it feels a tad queer (not gay) to wear them in the city to me.

I was in Santa Monica visiting an old Cornell buddy recently
we could have had an Ithaca reunion. I actually have 2 Cornell buddies in Santa Monica but one was out of town.
Do they wear an ITHACA IS GORGES shirt?
I always see one of those shirts.
I was wondering why my wife didn’t come home for a week recently… :-(
I could imagine one of them wearing an "Ithaca is Gorges" shirt
That one is moving up to my neck of the woods soon to go to Stanford business school. The one I was visiting probably wouldn’t wear one though.
The potential “Ithaca is Gorges” guy looks a bit like the actor Owen Wilson so if your wife finds Owen attractive…

Not to reveal nuthin’, but that is real close to me. REAL close.
JAKE, I am your Cornell friend you visited! Why didn’t you tell me you were on Blazers Edge?
Jim? You are a Blazers fan? But you were born in China, raised in North Carolina and recently lived in New York!!
Did ya eat at The Counter or the Novel Cafe while visiting?
I walk Mercury around there and down those streets all the time.
We were meant to be together, Jake. First Ithaca, and now this.
no, didn't eat at those places. i was only there for a day. i was visiting friends in costa mesa, santa monica and LA proper all over the 3 day Mem Day weekend.
it was a bit crazy.
Ahh
The Counter is good, always real busy, just a burger and shake place though. It’s right next to where you say you friends live (if I can believe what you say), so I figured someone would take a visitor there.
I’m gonna go walk around 28th and yell JIM real loud.
Give me a heads up when you’re on the Jksnake99 world tour again and I’ll tell you why you are slightly wrong about stuff in person!
Morty
The Counter has invaded the Bay Area
I don’t know if they’re in SF, but there’s a Counter in the old downtown of Palo Alto, and in Santana Row in San Jose. I’ve heard rumors they’re looking at a few other locations.
Always crazy busy. Eat there just before or after lunch hours.
Yeah, it surprised me how bizzay it is
I didn’t go there for forever, just would walk by and go “man that place is busy”. I didn’t even realize they only sold burgers, and when I did realize it I said, I said to myself, I said “you should try a burger there”.
I don’t go to burger places since I make my own burgers at home when I want a burger with Trader Joe’s meat, but it was a good burger.
It’s still weird how busy it is. It is never not packed. I’ve only gone twice, even though I live a few blocks from it.
It isn’t terribly far from the Santa Monica college campus, so that;s where I assume all the youngin’s come from to fill The Counter. I don’t see them anywhere else when I’m walking around with Mercury.

His favorite team is the Red Wings. That seems to square well with your comment.
In their defense
We only get to see the nationally televised games. A lot of folks go to USC so they’re big fans of California teams. Also for some reason they uses to show all the 49’ers games and now they show all the Raiders games, even preseason on the local stations.
That sounds like Vegas
No hometown team (aside from UNLV), gets all the nationally televised games and the Laker games, so they are Lakers fans slash whoever is good fans.

I once stayed at a hotel, and found someone had left a box in the closet
The box said “Givenchy” on it, and after doing some googling, got all excited because apparently those shoes sell for over $500.
After much research, using the brand name on the bottom of the shoes, I discovered that the shoes actually came from Payless, and someone just left them in the Givenchy box.

I can’t justify spending $800 on shoes, but I don’t have a pair that’s under $100 (or at least retail for that). I bought cheap shoes long enough, it really does make a difference when you spend an extra $50 or so a pair.

Check the fanshots for news on where Medina is headed next. He left Ohio yesterday.
proud hinrichsheeple
he seems like a guy who likes to lift weights, like benching and squatting… I just hope he’s getting good cardio in. Swimming, biking, non-contact activites.
Swimming is an INCREDIBLE workout. I had to give up swimming in high school because I was burning too many calories and was sick year-round as a consequence. If he does that for miles a day, he’ll be golden.
proud hinrichsheeple
Yeah, I think the work ethic thing isn't the problem
He got HUGE from lifting TOO much. He has a body that really, really, really takes to weight lifting. Great if he was a body builder, not as good for a NBA player if he doesn’t counter it with cardio.
He needs to be working in a gym, on a basketball court, more than the weight room. I want him to work on his lower body in the gym and maintain the upper, but cardio and conditioning is most important.
He needs to get some muscles on his legs to make it even harder to push him around and increase his vert
And ideally still lose 15 pounds in the process.
He called up Medina in a fake grandma voice
“Oh, hello, grandson Medina sir? I am so sick and need you at my bedside. Please bring lots of tacos because I am your old grandma and love them. Leave those boys you are working too hard there alone, you taught them enough. I will die without you here, sir”.
I found this comment by Stop-N-Pop over at CanisHoopus very interesting, given our current situation.
Success in the NBA is averaging between 45-55 wins in a season. Anything extra (i.e. championship level) is dependent on landing upper-level talent, not the pairing of front court mates who have yet to break into the upper-level stratosphere. Does this mean that the Wolves are destined to be, at best, a team like Denver, Utah, or Phoenix? Probably. Anything more would require luck.
Have we already attained NBA “success?” We’re one of the youngest teams in the league and won 54 games… should we be more proud and happy with where we are?
proud hinrichsheeple
Yes
Consider, 54 wins is Denver’s best season ever.
We’re just getting started.
WE ARE SO AWESOME I WANT TO MAKE LOVE TO MYSELF FROM BEHIND.
the most encouraging news of the last year is hearing that Oden hasn’t squatted since microfracture. That is astounding. He had no leg muscle last year, no conditioning… if he just gets into prime physical shape, we’re winning 58-60 games next year.
And we are so young. We have eightish more years of prime Brandon, LaMarcus, Rudy, Nic, Jerryd, Greg, etc… It’s going to be a fun era.
proud hinrichsheeple
Oden could have been squating a year and a half ago!!!!1111
He was too lady to do it. The kid has no work ethic.
only thing I am scared of is Mr. James
cause as Bill Simmons pointed out in his column today, to handle the Magic you need:
A) A center who can handle Howard (we have 2)
B) A PF who can punish Turk/Lewis (check)
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
I think I could settle for that if I'd had the feeling of a title in my lifetime.
I think once we get to that point (if we do), I’d be a lot more able to enjoy that type of success… but I really need to know what it feels like for the Blazers to win it all.
I dunno. I really really love watching the sport of basketball, and LMA/Roy/Rudy and even Oden are incredibly fun basketball players to watch. Even if we don’t win a title, it’s a team that will have a fond place in my heart for supplying so much aesthetically pleasing basketball.
proud hinrichsheeple
sure. I still have a lot of fondness for the early 90s teams that I watched as a kid.
I will always have fondness for this team also… but I’d still trade it all for a title in a heartbeat.
No. We are a bit in danger of turning into the next Bulls, full of promising players but not quite there.
but the Bulls never had Brandon Roy
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
True. But the overall talent level was supposed to be very high.
Kirk was once rumored to be the next John Stockton. And they had a fit Curry, Chandler, J.R. Smith, Gordon, Deng, …
those are all nice pieces
but are any of them really any as good as B Roy?
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
Chicago was missing the go-to player who stabilized the team
I think they thought it would be Ben Gordon, but…
They only won 49 games at their best!
I get the worry before, but now that we got an Oden and Roy, and LMA is a good co-star, I don’t worry as much. Their core was just nice young players, no real stars.
They got their first potential star in Rose though, so they can do it over again the right way.
We can learn it can be smart to sell high on young talent when they aren’t gonna be stars from the Bulls, but the core they were building around would be our 4th best players… or worse.
I want KP to overvalue Roy and Oden, but be open to moving others if something opens up. I think the Bulls situation just doesn’t apply though, since they were building around co-stars.
perspective is everything

For those who haven't heard...
There’s a rumor a trade is on the table. It’s likely already gone since it’s public knowledge now. Nonetheless…
To Portland: Tayshawn Prince.
to Detroit: #24, Travis Outlaw, Rudy Fernandez.
Just something to entertain yourselves with today, since there’s no Trade Drawer.
A user at s2 is reporting that Gavin said it
Since it’s third hand, it definitely falls into the unconfirmed-rumor list.
We already have Batum
This does not fix our point guard situation and we lose two HUGE bench players and add another SF.
I think Batum could get there
But Tayshawn is a point forward type RIGHT NOW, and would be purty sweet…
Losing Rudy would be tough though. I think he’ll be an extremely handy player in the future… and will be much more valuable in the future if we do end up “having” to move him.
but Batum would be replacing Trav in the second unit, and Rudy’s minutes could be absorbed by Martell (does a lot of the same things, with less playmaking ability)
proud hinrichsheeple
huh? We could either draft or pick up a cheap guy to play the 4, like Taj Gibson for 10 minutes per game.
Batum/Webster is viable because Batum could guard whichever wing player is faster.

I love Tayshaun… ooh that is tempting.
I think I do it, partly for how much Prince could mentor Batum.
Think about it… Roy would be playing all 36 of his minutes at the 2, and Batum/Prince would play all 48 at 3. We wouldn’t need Rudy’s minutes, really…

I say no unless we get Amir and their pick
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
KP has been able to buy late-firsts and turn them into solid bench players. If we can trade a few to get a championship veteran, we do it and let him go to work replenishing the supply of young talent.

as he’s never going to play ahead of Brandon and can’t hack it at the 3, so why not trade him for Prince? Outlaw and the 24 aren’t worth a lot to us anyway with Webster coming back.

Manu is a lot better
And capable of dribbling the basketball.
I’m gonna wait till there is a problem before I worry about the problem, especially when it seems there IS enough minutes for Rudy to play. Both he and Roy are versatile, and Rudy is not at Manu’s level. He’s better than Manu at the same age, but he’s gonna have to learn how to slash and dash defenses to take advantage of his passing ability and become a shot creator more than just a shot maker like he is now.
It is a problem that is a few years away, IF Rudy becomes a bigger deal… and if he is a bigger deal, we can likely find minutos for the guy.
It’ll fix itself.
Morty
My standard comment is
I will wait for Rudy to be a problem before we think it will be a problem. He played 25+ minutes as a dumb rookie, I don’t think that’ll get worse.
He won’t play ahead of Roy, of course, but they both got versatile games that can go alongside each other. Their skills overlap, not conflict.
I'm also leery of trading Rudy
I do think that if he gets disgruntled, it will be about more than his minutes though. But I think he can succeed in Portland.
I remember last summer when Nate would say "He is just a rookie"
I was worried Rudy would get 10 minutes a game, he played a lot more than I thought he would. He got the crunch time minutes too.
Nate's auto-response is to downplay what to expect from young guys
But yeah, he gave him plenty of minutes and often when it counted to. I don’t see how anyone could think there was a problem there, especially compared to the worries people had before the season started.
Roy will play 3

Just being a hot shot...
For you, himself, anyone paying attention.
Oden and LaMarcus and Roy, oh my!
he should have crashed,
hoping you’d help him up or stop to see if he was ok. that would work right? you’re not mean right? or would you laugh and keep walking? like i would.
Hmm, I think I probably would have stopped.
Although I don’t think its a good idea to fall over to impress someone.

Charlie Chaplin got babes a'plenty
And he fell over like every day.
You need to learn your prat fall history, as far as it pertains to roping in babes!
I'm speaking from my own experience here.
I once was running to the streetcar, got my shoe caught in the MAX tracks and fell flat on my face. I very handsome guy came over to check if I was alright but I couldn’t even talk to him because I was so embarrassed. Point being, i would never fall over to get some ones attention.

well, you use the fart machine in case
the lady that stops isn’t all that good looking. or old or something. then you use the fart machine and look at her and smile weird and she’ll go away. but then sometimes, she won’t go away and all of a sudden you’re a winner again. beggers can’t be choosers after all.
Yeah, if you fall over on purpose
And do indeed fall over, then you’re a success! Ya did what you set out to do.
You’re a winner.
oh really.
i’m gonna have to find some new strategies then. my knees and elbows can’t take many more scrapes.
Good idea.

Does the NBA explicitly ban laptops on the bench?
If not, how long until we have a coach (or assistant) who uses a laptop during the game to run analysis and report the best play to run based on success rate for that opponent and game?
Don't know, but coaches in the NBA are not quite as methodical as NFL coaches
Even SVG needed an awful long time to figure out which lineups worked and which didn’t. And somehow Brown never figured out to isolate LeBron on Hedo more often.
Sure but that's the current coaches
Much in the way we’re getting a new generation of successful stats-based GM’s… how long until someone thinks it might work for coaching too?

I don’t know it just seems so crass, being on the lookout for offensive, rude, etc. comments…

nah, that's what you might think, but in reality it's not like that. BE does a good job moderating itself.

There is no actual proof he exists. He is a euro-scam thought up by sports agents to lure NBA GMs into salivating over a mysterious Euro big man that they are convinced is amazing but has never really played.

i’ll just wait till august. no offense. seriously though, is it one of those test screening things or something?
Yeah, it's some sneak preview thingy... not sure if it's a test screening where we fill out forms
Probably gonna be crowded so we gotta get there early. It doesn’t come out for a while so it might not be a sneak preview; plenty of time to change the movie. I don’t think Cannes went that well.
i did read he was going to do some editing post-Cannes
because he really rushed it to get it ready for that festival. the reception was fairly middling though one of the actors, Christopher Wetz(?), won an acting award for it. i’ll eagerly await your “rad or bad” analysis. and then hope i don’t have to waste money because i’ll see it no matter what you say.
I've stayed away from spoilers and stuff
So I won’t ruin the movie for anyone (unless they want it ruined), but I’ll say whether it was cool or made me drool.
You will make the director cry if you say you don't like it, and he needs a new ending, and a new female lead, and...

Awww they don't know any better
Eric Gordon is decent and he’s all they got to be excited about. They can’t even go crazy over having the #1 pick.
If they like their short, 26 year old, all mediocre offense no defense SF then I can’t yell at ’em. God bless ’em!
its not like our SFs are great
long term, i’m obviously much higher our younger, at least equally good SFs, but its not like any of our SFs are worlds better than him right now.
Thornton doesn’t play defense and is incredibly selfish… he’s a net negative. I’d rather have 2009 Batum than 2009 Thornton.
proud hinrichsheeple
Well, sure
But Thornton isn’t anyone to be excited over is all. They also got a better PG than we got, that is true as well.

It’s hopeless over there, man… just hopeless.
You gotta make things seem nicer than they really are.
David Thorpe:
James (Tampa, FL): I took a bet with a friend on Oden or Noah when they came out.I chose Noah and im still holding to it. agree?
David Thorpe: Yep.
My response at BaB:
Oden hasn’t squatted for two years and played the season overweight and out of shape… in his age-21 rookie year… and was better than Joakim at age-23.
I really really like Joakim, but Oden’s owned him. Noah fouled out in a matter of a few minutes in the November matchup.
Of course, I’m biased and Oden’s had injury troubles. We shall see.
Am I nuts here? Oden owned Noah in the NC and in November.
proud hinrichsheeple
Thorpe works Noah out
He always pimps his own guys up more.
Oden defintiely owns Noah, right now this second.
ha, that was funny. I remember Thorpe saying that once Kobe left, K-Mart would be the best SG in the game.
One Dwyane Wade disagrees. Brandon Roy also disagrees.
proud hinrichsheeple
Hmm, who is next on that list?
Manu, Joe Johnson (liked him better as a co-star, not THE star), uhhh…
I think K-Mart was incredibly efficient and has 27+ppg potential, but he does NOTHING ELSE and your main scorer has to be able to help others with his scoring or it isn’t that helpful.
More turnovers than assists plus being the primary ballhandler = not that good.

Would you want KP to look seriously into acquiring Trevor Ariza? He is UFA, and he is in the finals, and he is 23.
That’s not the worst chances to get a good player, right? Not that I think he is something super-special, but he is a good player and what’s more important he is good on defense (well, maybe he would have to apologize to Rudy, but he is). And it would enable us to move Travis/Martell in a point guard deal.
I wouldn't be bothered by his arrival
But I also think there are other guys out there who I’d be ok with too.
Ariza is about as middle-of-the-road as I get about a player. I don’t get a feel for his growth path.
But he would be a good addition to the “controversial players” list from the Canzano-talks-to-KP thread.
it is worth it to go for it
Just to keep Cupcake working harder if they are considering trying to sign Ariza & Odom or make a run at Artest.

Make him an offer $100 above the MLE :)
Seriously, I think giving fairly aggressive offers to players you opponent needs to keep is not the worst tactic in tough economic times. If they don’t match, at least you get a serviceable player who you can trade later. I wish we had the $9 million from Darius to play with, that would make deals like that even more enticing.
I think it is a great tactic
This is a competitive nonzero-sum game environment, and it makes a lot of sense to force one of our largest obstacles into a less comfortable economic situation. I wouldn’t want to do it with Odom (or probably even Artest), but I can’t really imagine a downside to throwing a bit of money in the Ariza FA game.
"Slum dunk? You just go to the rim, and crush.. crush the ball in the rim."

You know what else is funny: Not long ago Ariza was with the Magic. Then they gave him away to the Lakers for Cook and Evans
Who never mattered for them. The Lakers are in the finals thanks to two opposing GMs :)

Tap water and stuff like spring water has way too many impurities
Unless you keep the humidifier perfectly clean and dry after every use… it starts to grow stuff inside over time. Then if you keep using it, imagine that stuff being heated up and sent out into the air… most likely when you or the kids are sick.
My lesson learned: Use distilled water (as the EPA recommends!) and empty it when not in use.
Isn't that why you should replace the filter and clean the inside?

Yep. Easier said than done in certain situations though
It’s also not recommended to use tap water in general, regardless of storage.
My humidifier has a pretty simple setup so I can change filters and the inside no problem
I always thought that would be the issue when using tap water. But you’re probably right.

wow that's it?
i’m surprised it isn’t higher
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
I was too
Another interesting thing about the HOFers on that list (or the presumptive HOFers), all of them either were among the 50 greatest NBA players when they made that list, or would be on that list if it were made today.
hope for Roy?
Best of Senator Clay Davis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TI4-QyAzY64&feature=related
To be a Hall of Famer?
There seems to be a good chance. While Basketball-Reference doesn’t automatically calculate a player’s HOF probability until they have played in 400 games they have posted their method here. If you plug Roy’s career stats into their formula, it spits out an 8.7% chance of making the Hall of Fame if he never plays a game again. This puts him in between Yao and Baron Davis among active players.
If you project that Roy will keep his current Reb/game and AST/game averages and modestly increase his pts/game to an average of 21.5 and plays in 4 more All-Star games (all of which seem highly doable) that puts him at a 62.5% chance of making the HOF before you factor in any NBA championships he may win and his total NBA MVP shares (basically a sum of any MVP votes he gets, which if he continues to be an All-Star on a title contending team should increase).
Magic? Am I just blind or what?

That isn’t owning him at all
Oden’s 14.8ppg per 36 is nice… until you see he’s also committing 6.5 fouls per 36.
Oden’s the better defensive rebounder, but Joakim’s the better passer, and he commits less turnovers. I think Noah’s at least as good as Oden now, and given their injury history, I think you’d rather have Noah for the next 5 years as well.
It’s funny that someone would take Noah over Oden. Oden at 21, recovering from injury, as a rookie > Noah at 23, second year player.

haha, I didn't catch the screenname
I have seen him post before.
I dunno what metric Noah is better at, aside from not fouling. Lets see how that is this next season and beyond though.
I don’t think he is a better, more natural passer than Oden, though it won’t show up in assist rates and what not (maybe TO rates, which Oden did well at).
Anyone who saw them play each other would see that Oden pretty much abused him, as a dumb raw as cookie dough out of shape rookie. Noah will be a good role player, but just a role player. Oden is beyond a role player AS IS if he plays 30 minutes a night.

If we would deal away our #24 pick we would save about $500k compared to the cap hold for a "ghost contract"
Is that really important? Maybe, though I hope we do something with it and not just sell it for cash, maybe a future pick from a team like Phoenix or San Antonio.
What if the Blazers just don't pick anybody?
That is to say, when the 5 minutes they have to select a player pass they don’t hand a card to D. Stern. What will happen then? Will the universe collapse upon itself?
I remember two teams in the NFL who wanted to have the last pick to select “Mr. Irrelevant.” They went back and forth forfeiting the second-to-last pick to the other team. I think the commish had to make a team pick.
proud hinrichsheeple
I don't remember that happening
of course I have never watched Day 2 of the NFL draft. But I do recall the Vikings not getting their card up in time to make their first round pick in 2003. Chaose insued.
I hope that happens to a team with chronic decision making problems like the Bulls :)
Stern enters the podium: “And with the 16th pick in the 2009 NBA draft, the Chicago Bull…uhm…have not made a decision in time. Jerry Reinsdorf, in my office!”
Jennings won’t be in Trevisio, Casspi also likely not. Mills, De Colo, Beaubois (has improved his stock, “couldn’t shoot, dribble, speak English two years ago”), Macvan, Jerebko, Daksic, Norel (Joventut), …
OK....so I decided to do one of my classic rock rewrites
I had decided that we needed one from John Mellencamp, so I picked Jack and Diane. The problem is that I got the 1st verse and have been stuck ever since. i thought I would post it here and maybe you all could come up with the rest or at least get me started again. So here goes.

wait, I know why you asked...
let me just say that my avatar is ONLY meant to match my screen name. I’m sure I wouldn’t know what comes in a baggie.

I just found out about a brand new 18 hole course here in Vancouver. I am so there on Saturday.

play in any tournaments?
by Peteyhasnohead on Jun 3, 2009 9:50 PM PDT up reply actions
I played in one that Jerry Miller organized once, it was near Rockwood, but makeshift, so it isn’t there most of the time. Mostly I just like going with some buddies to launch bombs. Traditionally McIver and timber and my favs, but since I found it, I’ve spent most of my time at Trojan.
Trying not to get banned from the internets
McIver and Timber are awesome courses
I usually just go to play with buddies for fun since I’m pretty bad, but still I love it
by Peteyhasnohead on Jun 3, 2009 9:57 PM PDT up reply actions
If you can make the drive to Trojan, it's worth it.
Prepare to lost at least once disc, as most of the holes have water hazards, including three drives across water. There’s also a decent course in North Bonneville.
Worse course ever? Camp Dakota out in Molalla. Don’t make the drive.

love water holes
I live in corvallis and there’s a bunch of good courses around here, dexter in eugene is a fun course too
by Peteyhasnohead on Jun 3, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions
I played Dexter twice. Epic course, a lot like McIver. i'd play it more if I lived closer.
There are a few in the Grants pass are, but that’s probably farther than it’s worth from eugene.

ya man
I aced number 3 there, the whole where you have to hit that little gap going down the hill, in the deep position, best shot of my life

I've got to remember to keep commenting in the junk drawer
how else am I supposed to awe someone with the volume of my comments?
(don’t click my profile, I don’t have enough comments yet!)
"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"
I don't think my ridiculously high comment count is something you should strive for.
It is difficult to get to 16k comments and also have a life.
Anyone for JD part deux for tonight? some serious lag going on.

Not sure how reliable this blog is, but it says Thabeet is going to Memphis.
Josh || BlazersEdge.com
that is an absolute head-scratcher of a pick if it happens.
I suppose Marc Gasol can play PF, but that seems like an awful reach for Thabeet.
and bad teams
wonder why they are always bad

I somehow managed to get onto a post about Aldridge maybe getting traded to Dallas.
when I couldn’t respond to EngineerScotty’s summary of Estacada as a meth infested ghost town, I finally realized the post was from May of 2008. I felt dumb.

Dude, check out the first entry on failblog.org right now
A new anchor is trying to break the news that Kevin Everett from the Bills regained some use of his hands and legs, but the video they show is a dude being wheeled into a courthouse on a wheelchair, and then violently kicking at people. Hilarious.

I am interpreting the lack of posts as evidence of a JD that is way too big. Give me 5 and I'll make another one.

i still think we should have an AM and PM junk. once it’s over 600 posts it’s almost too crazy

looks at the age limit. Some government official questions if it’s even legal to keep kids out of the NBA till 20. Could it be discrimination against blacks? “White sports” like hockey don’t have age limits or make you go to college…why should the NBA?
