Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

I Hate Blazers Edge

It's going to be hard for me to write this because I don't want to diminish the effort, thought and overall quality of content on this site, but seriously everyone, it's time to reel it in. I want you to picture the NBA as a giant high school. At lunchtime all the cliques (fans) go to their respective tables. The popular, preppy kids are the Lakers. The bullies are the Celtics. The slackers are the Knicks.

And then there are the Blazers fans. The dorks, geeks and dweebs. Not in an endearing way either. Taped up glasses, pocket protectors, fancy calculators and inhalers. Our lunches carefully packed to be allergen specific and a little note from our Mom written on the front. Swatting away spitballs and paper airplanes. Ignoring the snickering and finger pointing from the other fans.

After spending some time over at The Dream Shake I became envious and wished I could go sit at their table. They were swearing and trolling and joking around. But I can't just change who I am. So I'm forced to sit at the nerds table as they crunch numbers and come up with predictions for what might happen, not unlike a marathon game of dungeon and dragons.

What I'm trying to say is that maybe we're taking ourselves a little too seriously around here. It's becoming easier and easier to get banned. The slightest bit of off-color humor is met with an avalanche of "not cool" comments or the like. These extensive posts breaking down stats, while impressive, really don't mean anything. The Blazers are getting better and the future is bright. I don't need a complex equation to figure that out.

I just wish, assuming we're mostly adults here, that things could lighten up a bit. So what if someone drops an F bomb? So what if people get into a petty argument that reverts to name calling? So what if people post "rec'd" or "this should be a fanshot"? This is the internet and ever since the first person dialed up onto AOL there have been unwavering truths regarding the world wide web. People will argue, name call, swear and bully. Does it really affect us that much? While this is a world-class sports blog, it's still a sports blog and I'd like to see what happens when fans here are allowed to say whatever they please.

I'm tired of defensively looking over my shoulder to avoid an inevitable wedgie.

Yeah, being more adult by being more juvenile. Interesting concept...

I’ll go with most everyone else on this and say there are plenty of places I can go for coarser discourse. When I’m in that mood, that’s where I’ll go. It’s its own form of sanctuary. So is this. When I crave discourse without the coarse, here’s where I’ll be.

And thinking of fandoms in terms of highschool cliques is kind of silly. If we’re all adults here, then I’d hope we’re past that kind of social boxing. ;D

Hmmmm...

My initial reaction was to write you off, but I have to admit I felt a bit strange about the moderators and some of the things Dave was willing to ban people for. I certainly understand the need for the effort to keep the site from becoming a place where people show no respect for differing opinions and just type insults at each other…All I can say is I am glad I am not Dave.

I tend to agree with this.

We can rec comments, but there is no method to unrec or tag as lame.

The existence of an unrec or lame function would allow people to express an opinion about the comment without having to resort to anything that might be construed as an attack.

Slightly OT question for everyone

Did anyone go to a high school that was anything like the stereotype depicted above? There are always cliques and different groups of kids, but high school never seemed quite that divided to me.

Not in an endearing way either.

I’d just like to say I find nearly everyone here quite endearing.

My high school was not even close to that.

Everyone was friends with different types of people just like Blazers Edge. That description is straight out of a movie script.

Yes

actually having gone to three different high schools due to my father moving I saw both extremes of lots of mixing and also extreme clique-ishness. So sadly his stereotype was alive and well in a high school or two in Walla Walla, WA in the early 1990’s.

"Death is not final," Gita says. "If any man thinks that he slays, and if another thinks that he is slain, neither knows the truth. The Eternal in man cannot kill: the Eternal in man cannot die. The soul in man is neither born nor does it die. Weapons cannot cut it; fire cannot burn it; water cannot drown it.

My high school was exactly like that.

There was a group of kids who actually called themselves “the Jocks”.

Roy is the best player in the world with the exception of Incarcerated Mike from Queensbridge .

by Nick Van Excellent on Jun 2, 2009 11:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Clicques and more...

Certain restrooms were off limits to different groups,
jocks had theirs (they’d beat the crap out of you if you were caught),
hippies had theirs (too much smoke and other strangeness),
brains had theirs (looking down their noses made you feel pretty small, but sometimes they’d share),
vocational had theirs (but that required a pass to get to, and the wrenches were pretty cool overall)

there weren’t any preppies in Youngstown Ohio during the 60s.

the rest of us had to hold it or try to go during p-ed

and this is not a joke.

Small High School

I graduated from a high school (La Center High) that had barely over 200 kids. We had no ‘cliques’, at least no serious ones..and frequently a ‘jock’ would also be in the band, creating the rare hybrid "Jock-Band Geek’.

Myself, while I had a few close buddies, I was friends with the stoners, the jocks, whoever. Nobody was that exclusive. There were 34 people in my graduating class.

I attended an all boys Catholic HS in DC

That was ROTC.

We had nothing like the cliques that I was told by my friends were common in the public schools.

My .02

I’ll be honest: I skip over most of the number crunching stat-heavy stuff. I also could give two shakes about trying to predict who we draft. The endless trade speculation is tiresome to me.

I started watching Blazers games with my grandmother in the mid 80s. Just the right time, I suppose. I continued to watch until I moved overseas (I’m in the USAF) in 2000. I still followed Portland on the internet and occasionally on AFN. I moved back to the States in 2005 and started watching them again. This year I actually bought DirectTV with Season Pass to watch them and DVRed many of the games. I only missed a couple of games.

I read this site for the main page articles and game recaps. It’s also a good place to find other webpages to browse through for more information on the Blazers and the NBA in general.

I thoroughly enjoy the fact that I can read through the comments on a subject if I want to without the usual forum degeneracy that the anonymity of the internet brings out in some people. It’s refreshing to be able to read threads without worrying which two posters are going to have a competition to see who can sink lower when referring to each other’s breeding habits, grooming standards and ancestry. It’s nice change to not have to worry about constant vulgarity on a forum.

Moderation is not easy and each moderator has to find their own style. It will take time for them to get used to moderating here (even an experienced moderator takes time to adjust to a new forum) and it will take time for us to adjust as well.

Anyway, just wanted to throw another opinion out there.

Blazersedge is a world-class website because...

it is well moderated. Highly trafficked websites sacrifice value and integrity without properly enforced guidelines. This wouldn’t occur if we could all be trusted to add nothing but intelligent and pertinent comments – but we can’t be trusted – can we? The anonymity behind our comments here often shakes us free from our sense of responsibility.

For those around (the site that is) during the playoffs, the number of trolls, inappropriate comments, fine line threads increased dramatically. The Celtics, Lakers, Knicks all have much larger fan bases and more established organizations. As the Blazers progress and the popularity of the organization grows (which it will) this site will evolve. Sure the general tenor of be kind, respectful and courteous will never die. But the line will get fudged some…especially during more meaningful and contested times of the year.

I love the stats and predictions

LOVE them. I’m a law student, I spend time on 3 things My wife/family, law school, and the Blazers. I grock this stuff. I could probably give you a rough approximation of each player in the league as far as PER (within a point or so) PPG, APG, etc. off the top of my head.
I love the art and science of basketball and how much there is to learn. I want to know everything. That’s just the kind of passion I approach things I like with. I find something I like and learn as much as possible until I have reached a point where I have heard most all sides of most all arguments on the topic, (e.g. guns, 9mm vs .45acp) once there are no new arguments or data, I get bored.
Basketball is forever changing, growing, a nebulous entity that is neither here, nor there. I’m a Blazers fan, which means I once rooted for Juan Dixon, now, I root against him. Isn’t that odd? I love the new players every year, the draft, trades, free agency. I love the conflict of ideas and theories, the great debate of the theories behind basketball, styles of play, positions, all of it.
My dream job would be to work with KP and Tom Penn as an attorney some how, some day. I’m going to submit a resume one day too.

While I do think the friendly atmosphere over here at BE is cool and unique, I was incredulous when Dave released the post saying that people would be banned for calling a post a “waste of space” or “useless”. As someone who almost exclusively reads the junk drawer, the contest has not been meywayssed with, and the rules are a little more relaxed, and that’s all I really care about. I’m not into the stat breakdowns, so I don’t read them, and even if I did, why would I need to insult a stat guy for writing about stats?

Anyway, my fears have been nullified, and I Bedge on as a happy, pocket-protector-wearing camper.

The Mods

are going to lead to FEWER bannings, as they’ll be able to deal with issues in a more nuanced way than my limited time and energy allowed.

Although now I find myself spending that time and energy commenting in a post talking about talking on the site instead of talking basketball with people. I, personally, don’t enjoy this type of thing much. But I guess it’s a necessary part of the process.

From the back of Travis Outlaw's Franz card: Travis leads the team in monstrous thunder dunks, wins awards for post game interviews, and often gets extra points for degree of difficulty.

Potayto, potahto

Most of us are here because we’re comfortable with the rules and the culture. It ain’t perfect, but BE strives for civil conversations and debate, and that’s a biggie in my book. I can live without the right to swear, and I’d love to avoid having to scroll past a bunch of personal attacks. In short, this place fits my needs. Sorry it doesn’t fit yours, but like Nic Batum would say, c’est la vie.

I do have to say, however, that I snorted at the notion that we take ourselves too seriously around here. This is one of the funniest on-line communities I’ve ever encountered. There are some truly wacky personalities here.

And once again I have to agree with the wise crow (who I assume has a edgier personality in real life than many assume)

So do I. I also enjoy frequenting other basketball sites on SBN and elsewhere. Mavs Moneyball is fun albeit with fewer frequent posts and posters (the last two weeks were tumbleweeds, which is a problem on some very well-run but not so frequented sites). Blogabull is loads of fun, but they have a head hall monitor who despite being a cool guy is just that, he is the ultimate juror of quality and maker of rules. Similar with Sactown Royalty. Canis Hoopus has many very intelligent articles (some will disagree), but an infinitely smaller community. If I feel like I’m 1% of the visible community despite not even being a real much less knowledgeable Wolves fan, that’s not a terribly good sign. Ridiculous Upside has passionate but very few commenters. Golden State of Mind is…uhm…whatever that site is all about but it’s fun as well. TheDreamShake was fun during the series, but there were about as many posters I liked than I disliked. And so on.

Some of those allow swearing especially about in-game events, none really allows constant attacks on other people. I hung out in quite a lot in game day threads at Mavs Moneyball this season and they do swear. I did too, but it gets a bit boring and as Dave likes to say you can say the same thing and express the same feeling without swearing it just costs a few more seconds to thing about it. Things got pretty ugly when some Nuggets and Hornets trolls came over, that’s when I started feeling a bit uncomfortable.

If Dave allowed swearing (say in game day threads) quite a few people would do it including myself, but it’s not something that is advancing a site. I doubt moderators would ban people forever if they swear once (not at another member) in the heat of a situation about a ref or a player. It’s just not necessary, and zero is an easier guideline to hand out than describing what kind of swearing will be or won’t be tolerated.

If you got to sites outside of SBN, ESPN is quite spiteful, except for some corners in the forums and TrueHoop. You can’t swear, but the tone of the discussions isn’t helping real discussions (and the horribly outdated forum/comment technology). It’s “I’m right, you are wrong. Watch more Kobe/LeBron/Roy/whoever games. Shut up. What you don’t shut up? Let me tell you more about how great my favorite player is. Did someone already tell you Oden is Sam Bowie?”. Yahoo is similar.

RealGM where I just lurk is just as dorky as BE, and while they have some quality posters in the forum (some of which at least read BE since they cross post articles) that would enrich any Blazers discussion much of it is not more well-informed, it’s often a trade drawer speculating just like here.

That stats are becoming more popular is an evolution in the discussion about basketball. Punch the author of Moneyball and John Hollinger in the face if you meet him to thank him for his influence on it :) GMs, announcers and talking heads now use them more. It’s a trend that you can like or dislike, and I’m well aware it’s not the end-all be-all to win a discussion as some assume, just an attempt to objectify a very subjective experience.

I come for the access to the Blazers no other site has (well Oregonlive, Blazers.com and Kevin Pelton maybe, but is he even a Blazers fan ;-)), the news and the very intelligent basketball talk, and stay for the community from all walks of life that talks about all things in life (now if Dave would outlaw OT discussions and the junk drawer, that would really drive some people away even if others think it is the suck). I love many of the people here. And skim through posts that I fear melt my brain.

Sometime BE does seem like a bastion of hope, cheerfulness and dependability about a team we all care about, root for and appreciate. If you are feeling down, read a JD and wait for a TiH post. If you need to kill a couple hours, search for a Jsnake post and get lost in the data.

I think I understand both sides of the argument though. Sometimes what one finds humorous, another finds offensive. Trying to keep things more PC per say will lead to more moderated playfulness. As Dave says, it is what it is. Enjoy BE for the site that it is and contribute to its prosperity, which I think everyone posting on here has done.

The best playground ...

… when I was young had the busiest street in town that wound around two sides of it. It had a tall corrugated fence that arced around them. It was always packed with kids running and laughing and doing what kids do.

Were the fence not there I imagine it wouldn’t take long for some trouble to occur. The result, at least, would be less running and laughing and more huddling in the middle with less fun taking place.

Your welcome to your opinion... why are you here ?

I appreciate your honesty. I would just say I have never felt constrained in expressing whatever I want to. I have never felt at all obligated to comprehend statastical barrages which I felt were a bit overworked. I ignore lots of stuff, like trade speculation, which I may find, ah, ill advised. But I see that there are other members who are whole heartedly digging in and discussing such topics. So, I say, great for them… stay out of the way, and let them enjoy what they enjoy. It is no big deal for me to skip over material which is not my cup of tea. F bombs are hardly an critical component of meaningful communication, and actually can be a kind of mental laziness to avoid more effectively enunciating what ever it is you are actually talking about. If such effort is too “geeky” for you, really, feel free to get lost. Alternatively, feel free to participate. Just treat people with courtesy, and skip a few “expletives”. Not too difficult from my point of view. Hardly “hate” worthy. Relax.

You hate because you love.

I liked when Tom could jump out, at any time in any thread of any post, kidding about whatever, pulling everyone´s legs, throwing a bomb here and there. But there were quite fewer people posting at that time, so when the site grew Dave had to confine him and his fellow followers to the Junk Drawer, where it´s not so funny because there´s not the same surprise factor.

The true is each time this site grows more moderation is needed.

I don't understand the great attraction towards swearing.

How would it enhance the site? Would you really feel better if you could drop some f-bombs on here? Swearing indicates a lack of creativity and vocabulary. The wider your vocabulary, the more easily you can express yourself.

Let’s say you’re watching Ariza mug Fernandez. Your first reaction is to drop some f-bombs and whatnot. I’d rather read some more creative cursing like…hmmm…the ghost of Phil Jackson’s hips or…Dennis Rodman in a dress. Ok, those are lame, but you get the point. Devolving English down to a few curse words and some connector words removes all of the subtleties.

If anyone doesn’t like the new rules, then they can leave. If enough people leave, the site will dwindle down to just a handful of people. The blog either folds or the rules change. However, I highly doubt that will happen because the rules aren’t that onerous and they actually encourage more intelligent discussion and debate. Sure, some of the people on here can go overboard on stats, but, as an engineer, I can appreciate people using data to back up their claims.

Maybe it's just age...

but I have to say I really don’t understand your points. You want more “F-bombs”? You like petty arguing and name calling? The last part of your post sounds to me like everyone elses mom lets them do it… Do you honestly think that allowing these things would make this a friendlier place?

I would ask everyone if they don’t think the discourse at Blazersedge over the last week hasn’t been some of the best all overall that you’ve seen anywhere, anytime on the Internet? If you answer that it has understand that that has NOTHING whatsoever to do with mods being here. We’ve done very little.

The reason the conversation has been so good is because you have all made it that good. Take a few minutes and go read this thread: http://www.blazersedge.com/2009/5/29/892913/hinrich

Can you get that level of discussion elsewhere? Of course. Do you get that level of discussion more often here than at most other sports blogs/forums? You tell me.

I love this place. I love what Dave has brought about and I love the discussion that takes place around these parts. I’m sorry you feel it’s so easy to get banned. The fact is that it’s very hard to get banned here. You have to actually work hard to get banned here. Heck, this post is still up. That simple fact alone should tell you something of the way this sight is run. It’s my preference, and I know I can speak for my fellow mods on this this, that I never want to ban anyone ever.

I need to disagree with you. I’m interested in some of those stats. I’m interested in the mechanics of the game. I’m interested in civil debate where people don’t counter with “well you’re just an idiot”, but "I feel this way and here’s why.

I was over at the laker site. A response I received was “well this is how I think the world should be so it must be that way.” That opens absolutely no room for conversation, was backed by absolutely nothing of substance, and I haven’t been back since.

There are all flavor of fans. Some will appreciate the substance and some would rather shout others down. There are blazer sites for that too. Cusing and swearing is allowed and one sentence retorts are in full blast as opposed to two page write ups that help support the argument.

So I’m grateful that a site like Blazers Edge exists because it’s a rarity. Should the cursing rules be loosened? Would it add anything to my experience? If I really look at it, it doesn’t. Sure it expresses strong emotion, but you can do that in other ways too. Generally the cursing is used for attacking, and I’m okay if that is not a part of the Edge website.

Agree to an extent

Swearing isn’t really needed. Usually, swearing is just used as a lazy way to show that you really mean your point. A good replacement for swearing is some creativity. (Go figure.) This is why you don’t see any good author swear that often in his book.

“Dwight Howard is an (insert word here) monster down low” is just a weak descriptive sentence. Using some creativity instead of a 4 letter word adds much more to the description.
“Dwight Howard is the kid at recess who got held back twelve times. Nobody is as big, nobody is as strong, and quite frankly, nobody can stop him down low when he gets the ball.” This is a pretty lame description, but it’s still better than dropping an F’ bomb in there instead.

However, I do think that some of the other mod rules are a bit too serious. I find myself wondering if things that I don’t think are the least bit bad will get me banned. (For example, I had to think quite a bit of if my (insert word here) would be considered swearing. I’m hoping for the purposes of the thread that it is okay.) I suppose this comes from the fact that IRL I cannot really be offended and I get surprised at how easily other people are.

I look at insults in this manner.
A. They aren’t the least bit true and the person is obviously full of trash. (Someone said I’m mean to fast food people… this is obviously a silly insult since they have no way of knowing this and I am actually very kind to people who handle my food.)
B. They are true and I could learn from that insult. (If I thought back and realized that I actually am mean to fast food people, I could try and better myself as a person.)
C. They are just completely off the wall rants and I now know not to listen to this person. (I haven’t seen these here, but let’s just say that someone tells me that my mom hates me and that I should take up razorplay as a hobby.)

Basically, insults and so called “attacks” don’t strike me as the least bit insulting, but if they are creative I do find them funny. Sadly, the best Blazer site out there keeps this creative aspect of speech from happening now. Oh well, like someone said, if you want the delicious cookies of your friend’s mom, you can’t swear in their house.

So now...

We’ve had a pretty fair representation of views on this subject. We’re getting down to the part where people are just going to start repeating, getting frustrated, exaggerating what the Mods are doing/have done/will do and all of that good stuff. So I am closing comments on this thread.

A reminder, now that we’ve had this experience, that the sidebar is for talking about basketball. If you have concerns/issues with the site you can certainly e-mail me with them. When people do, I respond to those e-mails and usually things get worked out to everybody’s satisfaction.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
