Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

"Related Fanposts/Fanshots"

Does anyone else find these "related posts" a waste of precious sidebar space? The ones I just saw referenced fanposts from 3 and 4 months ago. Maybe SBN thinks they may be helping avoid duplicate postings, but for a site as dynamic as BE pointing out stuff that old is not helpful. Do any of you look at them?

SBN probably thinks they help the less frequented blogs, less frequent readers, and last but not least click rates

I rarely read the related posts. What I do like from time to time (not nearly every day or even every week) are the player pages, a fairly new feature that is interesting to see which other blogs discuss a player.

ha

I’m such a new mod that I didn’t even think about it! But now that you bring it up ….

Never read them

My brain regards them as advertisements and I seldom even “see” them. I agree with Norsk — they’re mostly there for the SBN sites with sparse content. They do help fill up space . . .

Wish I could

train my brain to not see them. I can’t believe how many times I’ve clicked on them thinking they were new!

I'm not sure how it happens

Maybe my eyes naturally gravitate to the xx new (sometimes bolded in red, sometimes in black — go figure) and those bolded lines don’t show up in the related fanposts/fanshots sections?

My scanning abilities have definitely improved as BE has grown.

I read them

if I missed them before. I don’t mind old content, as long as it is new to me.

I don't like the feature

But I don’t feel very strongly about it.

Meh

I never use them. I just get annoyed that they get bumped to the top of the sidebar at inexplicable times. I can never tell when I click on a post whether they’ll pop up or not. As far as I’m concerned, though, if SBN wants to waste server time adding that in, it’s their loss. They won’t get my clicks though.

What I’m more concerned about is the auto-tagging that they talked about in the new Fanpost editor they just released. I don’t really like tags on a site like this, mostly because they’re inconsistently applied and never really get me to what I’m looking for. I prefer the search tool because I like the control I have. What I’m mostly worried about is that they’re just going to go ahead and tag things without me wanting them to. I don’t like cluttered posts, and having a web program just go ahead and mess with my html doesn’t sit right. I emailed them, but haven’t heard back yet. Jorga, if you’ve got some mod sway, let them know to keep their fingers out of our posts unless we ask.

no don't look and yes waste of space......

lol… I would like…… for the title text to be smaller for the posts. like the size of the author, and the number of comments just taken out….. and the size for the recommended fanpost increased by 5 bringing it to a total of 10….

I think that would put a band aid on the critical mass tha’d be building (the edge is nearing)

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
