JUNK - FRIDAY WHAT HIGHSCHOOL?

Friday is here.

JD topic of the day...

What highschool did you go to and what year did you graduate?

I was an '02 graduate of Kelso High up in Washington.

Then it was UP for four years, back home for 3, and now I live in downtown Portland.

Also, my mind is finally made up....

My wishlist for the offseason:

1) Draft DeJuan Blair (Buy some picks and trade up, maybe trade sergio for a pick)

2) Trade Blake and Outlaw for Hinrich

3) Re-sign Nate

4) Draft a 3rd string PG and a few Euros

5) Do whatever else KP wants to do as long as we keep our other rotation players.

Lineup/expected minutes:

Looking at last year's roster, we missed a total of 1300 minutes to injuries (not including Martell, hopefully nobody is out this whole season) which is an extra 16 minutes per game combined for our other players.  Assuming we have a similar number of games missed this year due to injury, here's how I see the minute breakdown happening:

Hinrich (32)  Bayless (18)

Roy (36)  Rudy (26)

Batum (22) Webster (26)

Aldridge (38) Blair (12)

Oden (26) Przy (20)

NICE

I can't wait for the draft next Thursday, I took next Friday off about two months ago.

Have a good weekend

I almost got that puppy, but it was from a big well taken care of litter. So instead I went and got a pound puppy, equally cute, but not as young. Also not a Golden Retriever, instead I got a Flatcoat Retriever. Great dog.

Most of my high school classmates worked in casinos/restaurants at one point of another..the Last Frontier was a common place to find LCHS students.

Hmm...

I remember being served by typically older people. Except for one totally hot waitress, but she was at the New Phoenix I believe. (She actually fed two of us once… totally genius way of getting awesome tips.)

Working in LC

I can speak to when I lived and hung around there..until the mid/late 90s. There were older folks working too. The New Phoenix’s Chinese restaurant is really good, actually. It still surprises me that LC has restaurants, let alone a good one.

by SloppyJoe on Jun 19, 2009 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, casinos gotta have food

Otherwise people won’t be able to stay for 12,000 hours. But yeah, of all the casino food places the Chinese one was easily the best. Ahh, good memories.

Shoot, you could give me most of a day and I don't think I could narrow it to 11.

Especially because I want to lump Here Comes the Sun through The End from Abbey Road into one big song… the transition through each song always feels seemless.

Good choices though.

I might choose:
Lady Madonna
With a Little Help
Norwegian Wood
In My Life
Girl

I know

Those are good choices too. I have been listening to Abbey Road lately and could also go with the 2 suites at the end of it (from Mean Mr Mustard until The End).

by prezofdeath on Jun 19, 2009 10:11 AM PDT reply actions

That'd be awesome to see...

You’d have to front the other team’s center/PF and you’d have to put extreme amounts of pressure on the ball at all times. It would be a tiring way of playing.

On offense though you could spread the floor 5 wide and get iso drives going nonstop with no one in the center to stop you.

Wojnarowski, I hate you
For all the Portland Trail Blazers’ usual misdirection plays about moving up in the draft, few say they’re sincere in climbing into the lottery. Ultimately, it’s thought that the Blazers are trying to clear cap space – perhaps as much as $10 million – and multiple league executives think Portland is determined to sign Orlando Magic free agent Hedo Turkoglu(notes).

For now, the Blazers are trying to find a taker for point guard Sergio Rodriguez(notes) and his $1.6 million salary. They’re interested in Dallas Mavericks free agent Jason Kidd(notes), too. The Mavericks want to keep Kidd, who will probably ask for $8 million a season.

Right next to your smile on my spirit and soul are the immortal words of Jack Ramsay, who recently said on the 30th anniversary of the 1977 World Champion Blazers in putting that team’s abilities in historical context:

there was an arson

during my freshman year. Some former students got into the school after hours and poored a bunch of lighter fluid on the third floor and set it on fire. Luckily the physics teacher happened to be at the school late, heard the sprinklers go off and called the fire department.

This happened a couple weeks after presumably the same people tried to burn down the school from the outside. Which makes a lot of sense as concrete is really easy to burn.

She was supposedly bred by mean people for dog fighting in the ghetto of Tampa (Ybor), but she doesn’t have the lock jaw lotsa pit bulls have. She is real easy to beat in a tug of war.

She’s got dog fighter muscles and look, though, but she is the sweetest puppy in the world. Other dog owners are always scared of her until she starts wagging her tail, and people who are skittish around dogs cross the street to avoid her or look at me real rude.

Tom’s dog is Carlos the Jackyl, mine is Mercury the Destrukteress.

Mercury has a pit look, but she is part weimereiner and I’ve always said that’s what she is when we meet new people or move to a new place. People get so scared of the “pit” word, even though they are the most obedient dogs.

Your dog will be a monster. Attila the Ton? Hmmm…

Speaking of HS mascots, my high school was the Trojans.

I have never understood why so many teams are the Trojans. Do you really want to name your school’s teams after the people that fell for the old “wooden horse” trick? Seriously, you might as well be the “Idiots” or the “Suckers.”

For that matter, did Woodrow Wilson deserve to have HS’s named after him? His 14 point plan after WW1 didn’t exactly lead to sustained world peace… but that’s another matter entirely.

The city hasn’t found a new stadium site for the baseball team. Plans to raze Memorial Coliseum or build in southeast Portland have run into opposition.

But I shouldn’t get my hopes up too much. Nate and KP seem seriously in love with this roster.

by Norsktroll on Jun 19, 2009 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

The funny thing is that they are active. Making mock drafts (a lot), calling GMs, etc.

I’m just not sure their true motivation is to make any more moves involving some risk, which is inherent in any bold moves. Right now they can get away with that storyline of the young developing roster. But if that doesn’t work, the criticism later won’t be less. And my fear is that then you really have to go full speed and put players like LMA and Rudy and whoever on the table to make a decent move without cap space and picks and exceptions.

A (former?) president of PETA

Has called for pits to be destroyed and to stopped being bred, because “they attack so many people”. Ingrid Newkirk is the name. She is a joke.

Nevermind that it is how the dog is trained, not an inherent quality in the breed. Pits aren’t even the dog that commits the majority of dog attacks (something that is rather rare by itself), and even though they’re bred to fight by bad people they aren’t dogs that want to fight naturally— they have to be pushed into it, and only do it to make the master happy. They are extremely obedient— easily the most obedient dog I’ve had, out of Olde English sheep dogs, Rottweilers, Boston Terriers, Dachsunds, Maltese, NewFoundland, English Bulldog, and various mixed mutt dogs.

Support punishing dog fighting, and the helping end the training of dogs to attack and be violent. Not punish a breed for what humans do.

Experts find them to be naturally friendly and have a better temperment than such ‘nice’ breeds as golden retreivers, beagles, etc. when undergoing the standard tests for such things.

It’s a joke. I don’t understand how the president of a animal rights group could be so ignorant.

Yeah it's one of those issues where...

The type of person who buys a pit just happens to be more likely to train the dog to be vicious. (Not saying all or even most of them do this, but it is more common.)

It’s the same reason that people find poodles insufferable. The people who buy poodles do tend to let their dogs do whatever they please.

As much as I dislike Buck, I must give credite where credit is due...

…and that “jubjub” moment was awesome.

For me, Buck’s worst moment was when he was announcing the game where Randy Moss, then with the Vikings, pretended to moon the Packers fans during a playoff game. Buck’s reaction to that was so over the top and ridiculous that if I hadn’t seen it happen right before, I would have thought he was describing a scenario where Moss mooned them for real. It was absurd.

That really doesn’t seem like that big of a deal, what Moss did. He’ll get fined by the NFL, Buck doesn’t need to be so outraged. Haha.

Moss did get fined

$10K for the “moon”

Also it lead to one of the great quotes in history:

Reporter: “Write the check yet, Randy?”
Moss: “When you’re rich, you don’t write checks.”
Reporter: “If you don’t write checks, how do you pay these guys?”
Moss: “Straight cash, homey.”

Joe Buck is a bland, insipid play-by-play announcer who's only successful due to nepotism.

As a talk show host, Buck is utter excrement. It’s too bad that Artie Lange is a washed-up hack nowadays, because if someone with credibility tarnished Buck people would take it seriously. I hope that Lange was right on one account, though, with that being how Joe Buck Live won’t make it to show #4.

In any event, however, I’m just glad that Buck was lambasted for being putrid on so many levels.

However, $1.92 million is a very disproportionate punishment to any actual damages she may have caused. 3-5 thousand dollars is more reasonable but is still a huge increase over the price of two or three albums. The record labels should focus more of their energy on finding a better way to utilize internet distribution for their artists.

What I don't get is why people are still using programs like Kazaa to download.

Torrents are a better alternative. mIRC seems like the best method if you are really worried about getting caught. Plus using peer guardian helps a lot.

Shouldn’t someone be able to make money off of creating something that others enjoy and would like to purchase from them?

Kelsoballa, did you play Babe Ruth Baseball?

Looks like we are the same age.

In 1999, the last summer I played ball (wasn’t quite good enough to play on the Wilson team, or at least that’s what the WHS coaches thought), our Jackson Babe Ruth team played a game up in Kelso in preparation for our district tournament. On that team, I sort of split time at 2B with a guy who was a bit better than me while also making an occasional start at 3B. On this day, though, I wasn’t starting… until our Left Fielder (and leadoff man) was dogging it in warmups and our coach benched him. I took his place.

I led off the first inning with a walk and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. It was the last good thing I (or pretty much anyone else on the team) did. I dropped a routine fly ball and watched a couple balls sail over the wall for homers. We ended up losing 26-3. Pretty humiliating. There must have been something in the water up in Kelso that year, because those guys could play. We played an awful game that day, but we could have brought our “A” game and still gotten beat pretty bad.

But hey, I scored the first run of the game, so I’ll always have that.

Your OKC guys seem pretty unclear who they want to take

I haven’t yet started to ask my Mavs fans (well, I’m one myself) but read through the trade suggestions on Moneyball. Most ideas are implausible or won’t work under the trade machine – or both. Like Charlotte gives up Okafor and Wallace for Howard and trash. Or we trade up to Washington for Stackhouse and cash (I have made a similar offer, but a little sweeter).

i am UTTERLY amazed that they want any part of Harden or Thabeet

Awesome!

Ken Griffey Jr. just hit a 2 run HR in the 8th inning to tie the game at 3-3.

Didn't graduate from a high school, per se

I attended Poway High School (Poway, CA is in San Diego County) during part of my sophomore year and then left and started taking some home classes in the district before I could take the CHSPE (a HS proficiency exam) when I turned 16.

Blazers Broadcasters Mike Barrett and Mike Rice re-enacted NBA referee Scott Foster's controversial goaltending call on Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge, who was defending Oklahoma City Thunder All-Star forward Kevin Durant, during this week's edition of Blazers Courtside. Remarkably, no one was injured during the taping of this segment.

OK, that should just about wrap up the goaltending discussion.
