Portland Contacted Charles Oakley about Big Man Coaching
"Oakley also was contacted by Portland officials who suspect it might be good for the team’s health if a trace of his brutish attitude rubbed off on Greg Oden"
UPDATE: As pointed out by DephlatorMouse below, the article layout has changed a little since I originally posted it and the bit about the Blazers is now on page 1 instead of page 2. I originally linked to page 2.
If you open the link and don't see the paragraph about the Blazers, look through the whole article. It may move around again. :-(

Your link takes it to the wrong page for the whole paragraph...
Meanwhile, Charles Oakley is under consideration by Walsh to help big men get down and dirty at the defensive end. Does that mean the Knicks president is unhappy with how easy and how often opponents scored last season? My second question is, how do you teach bringing intimidation and intensity to work every time you get on the court? Oakley also was contacted by Portland officials who suspect it might be good for the team’s health if a trace of his brutish attitude rubbed off on Greg Oden.

Weird. The article is wrapping differently now.
When I posted the link, the section about Oakley and the Blazers was on the top of the second page of the article. Now it is on page one.

PS
I’d be all for it. Oakley was never a high octane scorer but he was for sure a top notch hard nosed defender.

I don't care one iota about Greg Oden's passive nature, since that's his personality and he shouldn't get ...
knocked for it. Regarding Charles Oakley, however, he’s flat-out the wrong kind of interior coach for Oden; on the contrary, he’s the kind of guy you’d hire to coach LaMarcus Aldridge. Maurice Lucas is already around for that job, though.
Now, apropos of Oden, he needs a not only a position coach who can teach him how to post up on the low block and develop some moves down there, but also a head coach who is actually savvy enough to handle the pick-and-roll — on both ends of the court — rather than implement what essentially is a standstill offense with little movement and force his pivotman to come out on said plays defensively instead of staying home to protect the rim.
Yes, that is a shot at a certain someone.

i agree
why do people knock oden for being something that 99% of the city is? if everyone wants to sit around and cry, drink the new local ale, go to a food cart and farmers maket and drink coffee why cant the players do the same things

McHale as Big Man's Coach
That’s what I’d like to see. Completely unrealistic, but he’d be perfect.

Unlike Charles Oakley, Kevin McHale makes sense here.
During his playing days, McHale was one of the most efficient scorers on the low block due to his smooth footwork. Yet, as you mentioned, the likelihood that McHale would accept such a gig is next to nil; instead, he’ll likely go into broadcasting next season.

Ben Wallace's mentor is Oakley
Trading for him & his huge contract would be as sure fire way to get Oden under Oakley’s wing. I bet Wallace & him could turn Oden to a defensive player of the year.

We need to dig up Hakeem
from wherever he disappeared to.
Hakeem’s footwork on Greg’s body= a lot of success.

He is in Jordan
“Playing three on three wit his bruddahs” to stay in shape. I know Emeka Okefor had some lessons with him & Oden is supposedly going to be playing some pick up games in LA over the summer, Okefor is supposed to be there too. Maybe Mike Conley Sr can find out if he can arrange a training session with Olajuwon. He really is the ideal mentor.

I wonder how interested he would
be in a paid position as big man coach? PA has the money.

Not intersted one bit
He will do offseason lessons for free, as long as they are interested. There is no way you get him to be an assistant coach, but if your lucky & they take a liking to each other we might see Hakeem at a Blazers – Rockets game :)

I like the fact that the Blazers are inquiring about a big man's coach
even if Oakley doesn’t end up coming to PDX. It shows one of the ways they’re considering adding “toughness” to the team’s makeup
I also wonder if this signals a potential leave of absense for Luke
