6/18pm 6/19am more garbage about movies!

Maybe a quick change up in the movies section and lets talk about movies that you are a bit embarassed that you like.

On top of my list would be Van Wilder. I know that it had a cast member from the Real World, but I enjoyed it. It is by no means a good movie, but it entertained me. I also really enjoyed Saving Silverman. The Neal Diamond cover band and Steven Zahn made it pretty funny. Zahn definitely needs more comedy roles; or roles for that matter as he seems to have disappeared.

Jump in your virtual confessional and lets hear some dirt.

Yeah, his character, BBIQ, shooting, etc. scream KP-pick, like Free Darko mentioned. I just dunno if he can defend adequately… I will say that our offense would be unguardable.

I guess he can’t be any worse than Steve in physical tools.

Stephen Curry has neither the body nor athleticism to even be a passable ...

defender. I still don’t get how anyone could think Curry will be anything beyond a so-so role player.

so theoretically

he shouldn’t be any worse than Blake?

Blake is a very smart defender, but Curry has a very high BBIQ. If he was determined to play good defense, I think he could reach Blake-level D. Blake makes Curry look like Jordan, athletically.

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on Jun 18, 2009 10:07 PM PDT up reply actions

so because Curry >>>>>>> Blake athletically speaking

it is possible that he could become at least an adequate defender in time? or does his physique (skinny, short arms) prevent that?

by cloudydays on Jun 18, 2009 10:08 PM PDT up reply actions

depends on whether he can fill out and improve his lateral quickness. He’s a pretty good ball-hawk, in spite of his short arms.

He will always be prone to the post-up, which is annoying. There aren’t a whole lot of post-up point guards left, though… Billups is getting up there in age.

If Oden becomes the center we need in the middle, he’d be adequate.

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on Jun 18, 2009 10:10 PM PDT up reply actions

from what i can tell, Curry has really good court vision...

when he runs the break, he’s always looking for his cutting teammates…the threat of a pull up jumper from anywhere, allows him a little more freedom if he can break down the defender obviously…

i’m just interested to see how he will stack up against bigger bodies but overall bball skill is pretty impressive

I don’t think his offense is in question at all. It would mesh well with Brandon. Two players that basketball-smart would make it work.

proud hinrichsheeple

by Cablinasian on Jun 18, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

You play defense with your feet in the NBA. He wouldn’t be a good ballhawk reaching into passing lanes and stealing picks. But if he would be quick enough to stay in front or at the side of his player (and his lane agility drill time was pretty good) that’s enough when you have a good defensive scheme funneling players into the bigs or into a bad shooting angle.

Problem is more with being able to fight through screens, and being tall enough that nobody shoots over you all the time. Bayless has the better tools in that regard.

by Norsktroll on Jun 18, 2009 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions

“I want to hold your hand” wasn’t a song, I was just wanting to hold your hand.

Hmm...

I know a lot that dislike it. My girlfriend makes fun of me for liking it…. Actually, the embarrassing part probably isn’t that I like it, but that I cried when we saw it and she didn’t.

It’s a mushy-romance adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel. Plot: True lover conquers all: class, years apart war, and Alzheimer’s.

What makes the movie is that the two lead actors have a ton of chemistry. I’ve definitely got a movie-crush on Rachel McAdams and I like Ryan Gosling in most of the movies he’s done.

My wife and I are remarkably adept at renting the MOST AWFUL movies

I think it has something to do with my having no clue about who’s who or what’s what with things like E! channel or People magazine or entertainment weekly – - So I have no idea what is going on in the Hollywood world and end up in front of red box going….?

and find myself acting lke a 1990’s stock picker or a race track newbie – -oooo that name sounds good!!!

I know there are some celluloid gems out there – - – and don’t get me wrong, I have seen a few off that list, BUT the almost astounding array of trash I have experienced over time has made me a potential cast member of Mystery Science Theatre 3000…

I wish I could remember the titles of the things I’m talking about, but I think some internal survival instinct has clouded my memories…

Sounds like a topic for a future junk drawer…

I'm good at renting movies that are rather hard to watch and where you need to be in the right mood

Then they sit around on my DVD player for three weeks just wasting my money. I think I needed like three attempts to get through Clooney’s “Good Night and Good Luck”. Good movie, but there is just not much suspense or action. Similar with “The Man Who Wasn’t There”, which is an awesome movie but not if you are bored anyway.

This week I had this movie in my mail http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Heat with James Cagney. And not sure I’ll be inclined to watch it this weekend.

by Norsktroll on Jun 18, 2009 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

I've rented maaaany movies that returned late and untouched

But I have had a rather disjointed past two decades…

Movies have never been one of my preferred artforms all in all – - like bad short stories too often…. My infantile sense of humor and ADD tendencies push me more towards classic cartoons and comedy central

Let me just drop a documentary

and see who is into it

Little Dieter Needs to Fly. Awesome story of a German who fell in love with flying during WWII and then immigrated to the US and flew in Vietnam. He was shot down, held captive, and subsequently escaped.

Rescue Dawn is the dramatization of this story.

And just to brag I have 1 degree of separation from Dieter Dangler and Werner Herzog.

Does this read like a KP player

- Out of control at times
- Shot-selection
- Turnover prone
- Ability to defend position at next level?
- Commitment to playing defense
- Defensive fundamentals
- Lateral quickness
- Ability to finish around basket
- Average athleticism
- Average wingspan
- Strength
- 3-point shooting percentages
- Inconsistent shooter

by Norsktroll on Jun 18, 2009 10:27 PM PDT up reply actions

this does
Strengths: Crafty point guard with a winning pedigree … Single-handedly led VCU to national prominence after taking over the PG reigns his sophomore year … Fearless performer in the clutch, stepping up in the biggest moments of the biggest games … Despite being a one man show, rarely settled for quick forced shots or made teammates outcasts … Extremely patient on the offensive end, allowing plays to unfold- no predetermined decisions … Tremendous basketball IQ and understanding of court geometry … Shows good court vision and ability to find the open man, averaging over 6 assists per contest in the 08-09 season … Utilizes the change of pace dribble as well as anyone in this draft class, lulling defenders to sleep and blowing by them … A master of getting into the paint off the bounce, either finishing well at the rim or getting to the FT line where he is very efficient … Shot 82% from the stripe as a Senior, which is efficient … Has an amazing ability to convert difficult shots … Very tricky around the rim, shooting from odd and angles with the ability to adjust in midair … Despite slight frame, shows deceptive strength finishing well through contact … Possesses deep range on jumper (39% as a junior and 36% as a senior.) Has a solid mid-range and step back jumper as well … Excellent hands on defense, averaging 1.7 steals per game his senior season … Considered a high character guy and has the advantage of 4 years of college experience under his belt …

Weaknesses: Not a top level athlete … Foot speed and explosiveness are not optimal … Extremely light at 164 lbs, whether he can add weight is a big question mark … Gives the appearance of being heavy footed, lacking burst on his first step … Was not forced to compete against upper echelon athletes on a regular basis in the mid-major CAA … NBA will be a huge step up in class athletically, as well as size and strength … Turnovers are a concern. Against top competition was very careless with the ball racking up some massive turnover totals (10 at Rhode Island, 7 vs. New Mexico and 8 at Oklahoma) … This could be a product of team quality, as he was forced to supply a large majority of his team’s offense … Gets too fancy with passes at times, looking for the spectacular. Settles for too many jumpers when switched against a big in pick and roll situations … Not a natural shooter. Lacks elevation on jumper, almost shooting a set shot from three … Low release point and slow delivery from behind the arc … Can be lax on the defensive side of the ball – has a tendency to take plays off on defense if his offense isn’t flowing … Will turn 22 in June and improved shooting stroke.

does this?
Strengths: Roy is a no nonsense 2-guard with excellent all around skills … Very cerebral player, makes excellent decisions. Understands the game … Very polished, great experience with four years at Washington under his belt … An excellent shooter who steps up in big situations. Hit a number of huge shots at the end of games this year … Has worked hard on his outside shot which has improved each year … Great competitor … Excellent ball handler with the ability to create shots for himself and others … His midrange game is relatively impressive and his range has really improved this year … Really stepped up in his senior year assuming a leadership role and taking over as the go to player for the Huskies … Has spent time at the point guard position this year, and played admirably … Not afraid to take the ball inside. Utilizes the spin move in the paint well … Good free throw shooter at 81% … Has great composure and confidence. Never gets rattled … Good one on one skills with the ability to shoot off the dribble and get by his man to the basket … An underrated athlete …
Weaknesses: Does everything very well but nothing out of this world … On the small side. Lacks tremendous size and length at just 6-6 with a short wing span … Lacks great body strength. His body is solid but not overpowering … Foot speed and quickness is strong but wont stand out on the next level … Defensively he is just average giving solid effort, but lacks the foot speed to be a lock down defender …

Travis could make sense for them so they can move Young full time to SG. Even Frye could help them a bit. Then take back a useless guy like Pecherov or the last year of Thomas (which would fit right up KP’s character player alley, but he isn’t really a bad contract). They should also have some overpaid PG flying around but the name escapes me.

I think its more apt to look at Roy Williams' bigs from his Kansas days

like Drew Gooden, Nick Collison and Wayne Simien. Solid players (the first two anyway), not lottery pick worthy. I’ve warmed up to Hansbrough a lot— to the point where I could deal with us picking him at 24, but he’s certainly not a guy I’d be trading up for.

Go Blazers!!!!!!!!!! Wooooooooooot Wooooooooooooot!!!!!!!!!

by broyposse on Jun 18, 2009 11:43 PM PDT up reply actions

not necessarily saying we should be in the finals next year, just that we need to get better and now's the time to do it.

so, its not about how far we go next year (I think we can go to the WCF with no moves, and its going to be hard to make the moves to get by the Lakers), but how we set ourselves up for the next decade… now’s the time to make that big move.

didn’t really have much to say about Kupchek before the Gasol trade— I’ve only become a super NBA/Blazer nerd who posts on forums all day within the past couple years. Kupchek’s a good GM who had the chance to make a great trade, and did it.

by jksnake99 on Jun 18, 2009 11:46 PM PDT up reply actions

it's hard to evaluate GMs because you only get to see the moves they do make...

sometime you can’t really judge someone based on the move, but the moves that were offered and didn’t make.

Let say Raptors were offering Bosh for LMA…if this was true at the trade deadline, than we will have a diff perception of KP….

so i just think it’s tough to evaluate because it takes 2 side to make something happen…and the big unknowns that we will never know would help with our evaluation of the GM. Only PA and the other team member will truly know if KP is doing good or great….

the other piece is who would be a better GM? Buford (can’t get him)??…btw, heard Wizards trying to get Manu again for #5 pick

He's been a master of ballsy moves thus far

The “he doesn’t like mid-season trades” thing is what is overblown, as if he was scared of it. Has there been a mid-season trade we SHOULD have made? It’s not like we haven’t liked pretty much all of our talent, and seeing it develop and win at the same time has been a huge luxury.

Calling for his head without knowing what deals we can make, just because we didn’t make a deal, is extremely juvenile and shortsighted.

I'll now answer my own triva question from the previous junk drawer, since nobody else could do it.

Question: Who was the first Chinese native to win a NBA championship ring?

Answer: Mengke Bateer, who won it all with the San Antonio Spurs in 2002-2003.

That is a damn good trivia question

I had no idea who he was and that he played for several NBA teams before the Wang dude did.

That’s crazy. You’d think a bigger deal woulda’ been made of him…

Yeah, I was gonna say he looked Mongol!

But didn’t wanna have that come off sounding bad to our Mongol Blazer fan brothers and sisters. He just has that Genghis Khan look to him.

Plus, the name isn’t too Chinesey. More Mongoly.

I like to think of myself of “up with it”, so I’m still surprised I have no recollection of him. Even if the Chinese don’t wanna pimp him, you’d think “The NBA is Worldwide” Stern woulda…

The Spurs also had the first Mexican player too, I believe. If I recall correctly, he was fat and had a mullet and was dropped by The Spurs because he was fat (and possibly had a mullet). So much for carrying the hopes and dreams of a nation on your shoulders.

While Mengke Bateer is ethnically Mongolian, he's nevertheless a Chinese native.

Bateer was also a member of the Chinese men’s national basketball team from 1996 until 2004, which seals the deal.

I'd like to submit my nomination for strangest serious question ever:

Does anybody have an estimate as to how long it would take to complete electrolysis on two female legs? My wife thinks shaving is the bane of her existence, and for her birthday, wants both legs done. It’s like $50/hour, so I’m trying to figure out if I should even bother considering it. Anybody?

I believe it depends on how much hair is there

And does she want the whole leg, or just up to above the knee, etc…

I googled a 101 on Electrolysis and it sez 15 to 30 sessions. Yikes.

Well, if she really wants it, it would be a nice present. Do places do a free consult?

by Mortimer on Jun 19, 2009 7:37 AM PDT up reply actions

I'm sure consults are free.

But yeah, that many sessions is ridiculous. I’m thinking the whole leg, because she likes to swim.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light, similar to a laser) might work faster and costs about the same

Nothing works overnight, I would guess it’s about a year until everything is done on a larger area. About ten sessions with 2 weeks minimum to a month in between. Then later “refreshers” with a much longer time in between. IPL works better with darker hair on lighter skin (and hurts much less as the procedure progresses). Blond hair on very tanned skin should still be possible but harder to do. Also maybe better to start in the fall since you shouldn’t tan between procedures (don’t know if electrolysis makes the skin more sensitive to the sun, or if it creates irritations). Ask about what cooling they use (gel, air) to reduce pain. A professional should be a able to explain that well.

by Norsktroll on Jun 19, 2009 8:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Just looked again, they say you should see first results after about 4 sessions (I would still think it takes about 10 to kill most hair and re-growth). But suggest rather 6 weeks in between. And it might be a bit more expensive. But usually only one pass per session. Why the many sessions: It can only destroy hair that is currently in the “growth phase”, which is about 20-30 percent of all hair follicles at a time. Similar to electrolysis it destroys the hair follicle via heat, but the applicator covers a larger area (think ultrasound devices) so a session goes by pretty fast as opposed to electrolysis where you essentially have to go after every hair. You can still shave in between, just don’t epilate/pinch hair just because then there is no root to destroy.

Mort--

this thread is huge and I’m not reading through all of it to see if this could go in a more relevant place, so I’ll just tell you here that I liked Changeling. I thought Jolie did a really good job. Liked the story. Liked how Eastwood just kind of let it be and didn’t do a lot with music and over the top theatrics. It did drag a little bit in places and the boy that confesses about the ranch was kinda horrible and ruined what should have been a really really good dramatic scene. Overall I thought it was very good. Sorry to interrupt the leg hair conversation.

Clint Eastwood usually does good stuff

I thought it was pretty good, though frustrating of course, since it’s a mostly (supposedly) true story.

People in charge of things are often dumb.

One recent Eastwood movie I hated? Blood Work. That was an awful movie.

I’m not a big Jolie fan and think she can be extremely overrated both in purtiness and ability, and while Changeling can be an overwrought drama how she did the role worked for it— and it being real events helps it also.

It wouldn't help Lebron in the quest to play faster

But, Yao is a very good skilled center who is best as a co-star, so I could see him being a big improvement on Big Z.

Plus the Cavs would be the most popular team in China, ever, with two of their most popular stars. They just need to trade for Kobe and they’ll have a guaranteed 300 million viewers a night!

by Mortimer on Jun 19, 2009 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions

If the Magic didn't get hot for a series

The Cavs could have easily won the championship, so I dunno if they even need an over the top guy. Yao would certainly be more thn enough, I’d say.

The Magic beating the Cavs is sorta a fluke

If they played again I doubt they’d be that hot from 3 point land, and I doubt Lebron’s pals don’t play so poorly.

And I think the Cavs could beat the Lakers. The Cavs just happened to meet a Magic team that couldn’t miss, and it’s nearly impossible to guard a team when they are hot from 3 point land.

by Mortimer on Jun 19, 2009 8:01 AM PDT up reply actions

For our sake

Lebron winning the title would make us all go ‘OH GREAT NEXT 10 TITLES IS LEBRON’S", so I’m glad the Lakers won, since we ain’t scurred of them.

by Mortimer on Jun 19, 2009 8:01 AM PDT up reply actions

You think it was the inability to overcome the 3pter and not the fact that almost no one on the Cavs could score to save their life? Not the fact that they were showed to have no depth? Not the fact that, once again, Orlando just had to deal with beating LeBron – nearly alone out there.

by idoltime on Jun 19, 2009 8:03 AM PDT up reply actions

That wasn't a normal problem for them though

But the co-stars went cold, and I bet they wouldn’t stay cold again. At least I wouldn’t count on it.

They were a good offensive team all year, along with their normally good defense. The co-stars were bad for a series, but it wasn’t because of what the Magic did. They went cold, the Magic went hot.

They lost, so the Magic deserved to be in the Finals, but I’d say both the Lakers and the Magic would lose MOST series to the Cavs, if Mo Williams and Big Z can play just to their average ability. Lebron will always be Lebron.

by Mortimer on Jun 19, 2009 8:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Could be

Or it could be that the lack of experience in that situation (esp. on Mo) came to bear.

Between the differences in coaching and the fact that the Lakers did beat the Cavs both times (and by more than a margin of error) during the regular season, I would say that the Lakers would have at least a 50/50 chance of beating the Cavs in any given series.

by idoltime on Jun 19, 2009 8:14 AM PDT up reply actions

I think that's fair

I’m mostly relieved that Lebron didn’t win, because then everyone would be scared that it would be a decade long nightmare where the sun shines on no one except the evil Lebron.

With how close most of the games were, and even with everyone playing bad except Lebron, just Mo being decent coulda’ been enough. Even with the Magic shooting like 60% from three point land.

This is all better for us though, and the Blazers are the Team of Destiny. Now Lebron is unhappy, the Cavs will fiddle with their team, he’ll bolt for a crappy NY-area team, and we sop up the championship trophies for 8 years.

Problem solved!

I do agree that the Cavs match up better than the Magic with the Lakers

especially because of the whole front court size issue.

If Mo showed up and they got a great performance out of boobie, wally, or their sasha.. maybe.. could they keep on the boards?

But is he that much different? Z is an able defender, hits his free throws, and has a decent outside shot

Somehow they went away from him as the playoffs progressed. But during the season he was often their #2 option.

by Norsktroll on Jun 19, 2009 8:12 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think Yao is a dominant big man

BUT, he’s a rich man’s Big Z. Better shooter, more skill down low, good/better passer, you just can’t go far with him as the #1. He doesn’t exert his will over the game and he’s purty slow and unathletic… similar to Big Z.

I think Yao as a #2 option would be sweet, but you’d still be stuck playing sloooooow. And while Lebron is good in the halfcourt, I wanna see that freight train running a lil’ more.

THE SAMMICH STEALER

OKLAHOMA CITY – A man in Oklahoma City said he was attacked for his bologna and cheese sandwich. Police say 24-year-old Roger Hamilton told them he was sitting on a bus station bench Wednesday, about to put mayonnaise on his sandwich, when another man began staring at him.

Hamilton told police that the man then punched him in the mouth and grabbed his sandwich and left.

Police said Hamilton has a swollen lip and his face was covered in blood. The police report listed the value of the sandwich at 76 cents.

Police have not found the attacker.

The wise man from Houston chimes in
This is the deepest PG draft in a long time. Quality and quantity are high. Rule changes have indirectly driven the depth we are now seeing.

by Norsktroll on Jun 19, 2009 8:15 AM PDT reply actions

Another trend I think we'll start to see is the two PG line-ups

Ala Cleveland with Delonte West and Mo Williams. Since the rule changes are emphasizing speed and penetration, having two PGs to maximize this and create more openings for the wings makes a lot of sense to me. The trick is those PGs need to be able to score off a shot or drive, so you may even call it the two Combo guard line-up.

That’s why I liked drafting Bayless. Roy abuses defenders once he has an advantage, but most of the time he creates the advantage. If Bayless can do the same, then the defense will always be on their heels. If you can’t consistently stop either 1v1, then the help defense will allow the ball to rotate to a big man (dunk), wings (shot, or shot-fake to drive), or 2nd guard (ball rotation, shot, or penetration to shot or pass).

Complete. Dope-ness. Please Bayless, become something close to Mo Williams, Devin Harris, Rondo, etc.

by Quik_Baller on Jun 19, 2009 8:59 AM PDT up reply actions

That's the advantage Roy will give us

He enables us to not need a strong playmaking PG, just someone to hit open shots and penetrate and score. Oh, and guard the PG position on defense (that is usually the catch… there are a ton of dudes who are PG size and can score, but they can’t defend).

Hopefully Bayless works where someone like Barbosa, Gordon don’t because he can guard the PG position. He’s definitely got the scoring potential to be a really good fit…

Mo

by Mortimer on Jun 19, 2009 9:08 AM PDT up reply actions

I know Roy gives us that advantage...

I just have dreams of Roy attacking like normal, but when he doesn’t find a great opening, it’s kicked out to Bayless. Bayless then blows by his man (who’s closing out because his shot is improved), and the defense scrambles again.

They may be able to contain us a few times, but it will be sooooo difficult to keep that up and absolutely exhausting and demoralizing.

But if Bayless became that solid, he may be able to initiate as well, and then Roy is attacking a defense that is already scrambling. We all know Roy can score against set defenses… but against a defense that is already helping to stop another player? It’s over. Roy would shoot 50% or more for the season.

Other options to create this scenario for Roy would be Oden or LmA (similar to how he finished the regular season), but the rules are giving extra advantages to the guards… which is why Bayless is a strong candidate as well. So fast and strong, he’s just a feaking pit bull.

Ok. Enough dreaming…
