Lamar Odom could be close to final piece for next 3 years

The chances of Lamar Odom wanting to play in Portland while sharing time with Aldridge, Odom and Pryz are slim. I think if you are the Blazers you offer him a 3 year mega deal, then as he exits his prime we move on to the future. Addition by subtraction from the Lakers would catapult this organization past the Lakers IMO. We could then see what we can do about upgrading the PG position. Sure Odom shows up when he wants and is thought of as soft, but you take him off the Lakers and they suddenly do not have as many guys being long out there. That, is the #1 reason I believe they won this year, Kobe 2nd(maybe 3rd). Chances are slim to pull this off, I think you do as much as possible to make this happen because this takes you immediately into the first leg of championship runs with Roy. I am 100% confident in Batum and Roy's ability to take it to a declining Bryant.

This would leave Portland with:

Oden/Pryzbilla

Aldridge/Odom

vs

Bynum/Didier Ilunga-Mbenga

Gasol/Josh Powell

Lamar Odom is a better PF than SF.

The Kings have the best bench I’ve seen. There are easily 14 guys on this team good enough for every bench in the league. Now if we could only get some starters, I’d totally jizz in my pants.

Odom is great when he decides to play

however, if he is as inconsistent as he is with Kobe and Phil barking at him, how is he going to be with Roy and Nate?

Plus, I don’t like the idea of taking a player from the Lakers just to make them weaker. any player we acquire should be to make us a better team.

by JasonT on Jun 16, 2009 8:29 PM PDT reply actions

I see this as fair game.

This would also be to make the depth of the Blazers better.

Imagine if the Lakers said, “Maybe we should not trade with the Lakers since our 1 year retired GM used to be a deal maker and an icon for the Lakers. That looks fishy.”

"Both Anthony Carter and Jameer Nelson were downright jubilant in the Magic locker room postgame. Carter said to no one in particular, "Brandon Roy, that man is unstoppable, it's like he's playing NBA Live" and Nelson was cracking on his teammates for not being able to guard Brandon. The kinds of jokes you can make when you win."

another player with the consistency and pay of Darius Miles.

and he is an ex-laker, no thanks.

I'm sorry to have to hurt your feelings, but...

The idea of obtaining Lamar Odom is absolutely ridiculous. The dude is not a true banger and he is kind of an a-hole. Yeah he’s got skills but he’s on the downside of his career and his character is a massive metastatized cancer.

so why would he sign here for the same situation?

No! I'm thinkin...

With the exception of Ariza(<this guy has game), No L*ker player coming to Portland straight out of gold and purple will have any kind of a warm welcome from Portland fans, IMO.

So, you pick the guy who almost killed Rudy?

Batum will be better long term— I dont see how losing him kills the Lakers/Helps Blazers as much

I know he's not a popular choice...

but as we have watched him and how he plays, do you really think that was intentional, or was it just him hustling to make the defensive play(like he constantly does)? He has proven himself as a lockdown defender with a high BBall IQ.

We're split on that right now.

Split on the hating Ariza for how he acted after the foul on Rudy.

For me, I still love Raja Bell for clotheslining Kobe, so I guess I’ll keep hating Ariza…

Plenty of people agree that we should forgive and forget, so your words aren’t falling on deaf ears.

The Los Angeles Lakers will re-sign Lamar Odom this off-season.

As George Zimmer says in his Men’s Wearhouse commercials, “I guarantee it.”

This is a nice post LOL

The rest of them, I dont know.

Will they choose Odom over Ariza?

I would assume that the Lakers can’t keep both of them. Ariza is younger and seems to have more potential for improvement I think and wouldn’t probably cost as much to keep as Odom, so I could see them actually letting him find more money elsewhere. I just doubt they will have both Ariza and Odom on the roster next year.

Nate coached Odom back in 2007 for team USA

and McMillian had some nice things to say re: Lamar’s effort and work ethic, IIRC. I went looking for the comments but couldn’t find them. Does anyone else remember this?

Maybe Nate’s a big LO fan? You never know…

The past in portland?

There is no way possible that the blazers staff would want odom because of past stirring incidents.

by dew0lfe on Jun 16, 2009 8:57 PM PDT reply actions

Too 'spensive

He’s not gonna leave the Lakers unless he gets a huge payday. He’ll take a pay cut to stay in LA, but he’ll ask a fortune if he’s leaving.

Also, I don’t think he (a) plays with consistent effort, (b) wants to play the PF, or © wants to come off the bench.

I don’t think this idea is good for the Blazers and just seems a little spiteful.

Right

Which is why I suggested offering a nice big 3-year deal….you know, after the rings roll in and we have new options

I just don't think he's that great

He’s had flashes of brilliance, but he is very inconsistent (even playing on a championship-contending Lakers squad).

While it hurts the Lakers to remove him from their roster (and I don’t think he would leave), I think it hurts the Blazers a lot more due to the massive cap hit he would cost (gotta be at around $10 million to get him to leave LA). I just don’t think it would be a good move to sign him period.

by ninjasocks on Jun 16, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I had a similar post prior to the finals

the overwhelming comments I got against Odom put a clear perspective on why he will never be a Blazer. Odom is very versatile, but he is not going to accept the limited mins. he would get here, he is too expensive, and he does not address our number one need PG.

Huh?

“…a declining Bryant.”…??

by socalblazer on Jun 16, 2009 9:18 PM PDT reply actions

You are correct that at this time it is still assumed. He played better this playoff than the last I've heard.

But if he doesn’t start at least a small decline in the next couple of years it will be very surprising.

Some Laker fans have talked about their worry that he isn’t as willing to slash to the hoop so maybe his play style is already showing wear (but that may be one of the reasons he stays so healthy).

by staylost on Jun 16, 2009 9:55 PM PDT up reply actions

absolutely

I have seen him get shut down the last few years more than any other time outside of his first few years.

Kobe has lost a step and can't get to the hole at will anymore. Which does not mean he isn't still very deadly, mind you, just that he's more of a perimeter player now...

Championship ring, big contract (if Blazers bite)...

Sit behind Aldridge…what would be his motivation?? He has never appeared to have much. He seems like the kind of player that would enjoy what he has and coast until his next contract year.
Also, I don’t see him going for a three year deal. He will ask for 5 and probably get 4 from whichever team signs him.

We really do need a back up power foward. Outlaw does not work, and Frye is just done.

Playing 2k9 for example, I have no one I want to put in at small forward, so I’m forced to put in Outlaw. It’s starting to become a glaring weakness to me. I don’t really like Odom though, he can do some really silly things on the court.

Put in Batum

Place him on strongest backcourt scorer and tight defense.

While I think we do need a guy like Odom to come off the bench,

if we are going to steal anyone from the Lakers, I think it should be Ariza. I think that would hurt the Lakers more and at the same time help the Blazers more than Odom. Odom is too inconsistent. Plus the Blazers could probably get Ariza cheaper than Odom.

Odom and Oden on the same team? the confusion alone ain't worth it

you’ve got to remember, yes he’s versatile, but he looks much better than he is playing next to Kobe (main focus of every defense they face) and Pau Gasol. You could argue that it would be similar playign next to Roy and Aldridge, but I don’t think it would be

We need a banger at PF to compliment Aldridge’s finesse game, and we need a PG upgrade. The only other way we should make a move is for a big-name guy, and Odom is too much of a reserve/complimentary guy to give him big money
