Tuesday Junk - Which of you predicted our recent drafts correctly?

So many bloggers on here have opinions as to who we should draft, often with good analysis to back it up.  However, I was wondering, in the recent years, who here has correctly picked diamond's in the rough such as Batum, Rudy, Bayless, Roy and Aldridge?  Who is consistently getting it right come draft prediction time?  (Besides KP).   Not many people around here actually listen to (read) what others have to say for whatever reason, but who SHOULD we be listening to?  Who has a reputation for seeing talent?

No saying "I'm always right" or something to that effect, and be honest.   But if you do have a rep for getting it right, who do you like this year?

Have a great Tuesday and if you are downtown be sure to check out that condo cruise liner that's docked at the waterfront.  It's freaking huge.  It constantly travels the world.  I believe they are still selling condos on there also....

I liked Batum, Bayless, Rudy, and Roy… but I also liked Jarrett and Martell. I wanted to stay away from LMA.

Oh, and I liked Derrick Byars.

I thought we'd draft Noah over Oden

Nate made a bad move not doing it, Oden is a bust.

I didn't realize......

that Nate made that pick. I wonder how many other picks Nate made. Time to get rid of KP since Nate does all the picking.

Nobody has ever really guessed KP's moves

There’s been some good calls in the past (“I think they should try to get Bayless”) but KP does such surprising moves that there’s no consistently correct guessing.

In fact, half the fun is trying to figure out what he might do. With all the teams who may make moves for financial purposes, it makes it that much tougher to guess.

The true purpose of the discussion here, for me at least, is to read through it and learn about players you might otherwise not know. But you can’t take it too seriously… KP seems to always do the unexpected. I mean, Zach for Frye, Jones, Francis and the rights to Rudy? Wow.

by Timmay! on Jun 16, 2009 9:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't think KP knows what he's going to do until the last minute as well

In most the situations it comes down to if the player is available at your pick you make the selection for us if not we have plan B already going and that is what we will run with.

I wanted Chris Paul or BPA. I was angry that we traded down, and was right.

I also wanted Brandon Roy. I didn’t want LaMarcus (or Tyrus). I first heard about Durrant and liked him, but when we got the #1 pick and the Oden-Durant debates started I wanted Oden. Last year I wanted Joe Alexander, I didn’t think that Bayless or Westbrook would be available to us. I had Bayless at #4 on my draft board.

by Norsktroll on Jun 16, 2009 9:31 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Brandon Roy is the last player I really, really wanted Portland to draft.

I was so frustrated with the Roy vs Morrison talk. I’m a UW alumni, and knew Brandon brought more to the table than he was getting credit for. I was so down when Minnesota stole him in the draft, then smiled when the first rumors of the trade came out.

I basically presumed Portland should draft Brandon at #4, then they’d be done. But they got LMA too. That was such great work, and I didn’t see it coming.

Since then, I basically am more interested in watching who KP gets, as opposed to picking someone I want him to get. Otherwise, it just leads to a sense of disappointment when “my player” isn’t picked, even though KP is assuredly a better talent evaluator than I.

I was close.

Early before the draft last year I thought we’d move down to get Batum. Then as I saw Bayless dropping and I latched on to that idea.

www.blazersedge.com/2008/6/24/557880/bayless-falling

I didn’t figure that Portland would get both. (I also thought we’d move up from the 2nd round to get Koufos.)

The year before I wanted Oden. (No clue on Rudy.)

Slightly different take: Who can you see slipping in the upcoming draft?

(Not necessarily who is a bust, just who will get picked significantly lower than e.g. projected by DraftExpress or Chad Ford at the moment. Last year it was Darrell Arthur, DeAndre Jordan and to some extent Bayless.)

I think Blair slips cause of the knees

Curry has moved up so fast, I could see him slipping back to where he was. Also, for whatever reason, I think BJ Mullins slips to the late first round

I think the Pacers take Blair unless they really want a point guard to replace Jack or Ford, don’t think he slips far. Mullins thinks he has a guarantee in the top 16 (Bulls?), but that remains to be seen :)

The top depends a bit on who trades. Ironically Rubio and one of Flynn/Jennings/Holiday I think could slip.

Rumor: Timberwolves could move Love for #2 and take Rubio - potentially even without giving up the #6

I doubt Rubio wants to go from Spain to Minny, but whatever. That would be a great draft for Minny if they could get #2 and #6.

For as much as we despise Love and his rabid fanbase

he fits very well with what Memphis needs. They need a rebounding passing bigman to put next to Gasol, someone who doesn’t need the ball to score. at some point it’s not about how Much you can get, it’s about how well it fits with what you have. Love would be a better fit than Lee

I like Love more than Lee too

But I don’t know if I like him more than what Rubio could be, and it certainly isn’t worth the VALUE that Rubio and his potential has league wide.

It’s not like Memphis is gonna win anything next year, it’s still development time. Love is a good player, so I’m not anti-Love, I think he’ll be a very good role player. Rubio could be a star, or at least people think he will be. You can get more for him now, I’d say.

That is a bit of a non sequitur concerning

Bassy and Rubio. Also, I think if Memphis were a piece or 2 away from being something then they make that trade, but what they need now are assets and future flexibility by dumping bad contracts. In this case they are just making, at best a horizontal move in assets, and doing nothing to dump a contract.

Your point stands that at some point you give up talent for fit, as the Blazers may do this summer, but this is not the time for Memphis.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 16, 2009 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only bad contract I see is Jaric

and they’ll be hard pressed to find a team to take him off their books. I think if their building their core, as they would be by acquiring Love, then you worry about fit.

they also have Darko

I guess if they look at this year as a successful year, and then say that a young big putting up good numbers on a struggling team is a core player for them, then they do this, but if not then they need to get more than Love out of the #2 this year.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 16, 2009 10:58 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That's sorta my take too

If you think Love IS the BPA, then you do the deal.

If it’s just about fit, well, he’s just fitting into a bad team.

Ya gotta get BPA when you’re bad, or you are drafting Martell over Paul/Deron (to go back to the Bassy situation).

by Mortimer on Jun 16, 2009 11:00 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

You don't concern yourself with fit when you're a real bad team

You just gotta get the best players you can. LMA didn’t fit with Z-Bo, after all, nor Derrick Rose with Kirk Hinrich. I personally don’t think Love is worth a guy who could be a star PG since Love will be such a bad defender for his entire career, but he’s still much better than David Lee.

You can get a better player than Love, and just going for fit when you’re already a bad team (over getting the BPA) is the best way to stay a bad to mediocre team.

I haven't ever really done a hardcore prediction

BUT, I really wanted both LMA and Roy, and I hated hated hated Morrison and he’s still even a bigger bust than I thought I’d be. I tend to second guess myself when I don’t like a college player that everyone else loves, but USUALLY I am right.

I wasn’t following the NCAA as much the Paul/Deron year, and I would have been fine drafting them BUT if we wanted a shooting guard/shooter I liked Danny Granger and Martell.

I thought Bargnani would be a better scorer than he has been, but everything else has been what I figured. I didn’t like Tyrus because I didn’t think we needed another all-athletic no-skill NCAA Tourney standout type guy (not that we had another NCAA standout I can think of, but the first part is true). I was seriously bummed when we had drafted Tyrus and then Foye, because it MADE NO SENSE WHAT THE HELL is what I said.

I was happy when we made the trades. I liked LMA, even though he was stick n’ bones, because he’s got lank for days and had skill while still being pretty raw. That only gets better.

Roy was just totally solid and I thought he was the sort of guy everyone underrates because he was in college for a few years and was totally solid and didn’t have that many holes in his game. Roy, Josh Howard, Danny Granger, that sort of thing. I thought he’d eventually be a 20/5/5 guy, and he’s been even better so that’s suh-weet for us!

I didn’t think Lopez would translate as well because he moved so stiff, and I don’t think Love will be a star but will be good and skilled. Right now I don’t think Blake Griffin will be a star either. Rubio could be a star but I really worry about his boy-like body. I know he’s real young, but he looks 13 and that is not a good thing.

I really enjoyed Durant in college, figured he’d be sweet, but when we got the #1 pick the right choice was Oden. I played Devil’s Advocate for Durant during that time, defending him from the Darius Miles type comparisons people were using, but at the same time saying Oden was probably the right choice. I’m glad we got Oden, because Durant has actually been worse than I expected. He is a pretty bad playmaker, doesn’t post up like in college (he’ll get stronger, but he has a ways to go), and his defense has been the kind where the other team targets you specifically… like how Martell was his rookie year.

Oh, and I always liked to think it’d be fun to go for those high intrigue foriegny picks. I was happy about Sergio, I wanted Rudy, I didn’t think we’d get Batum the year before his draft but when he fell I agreed with Spencer Butte and felt we should get him (just to see how it’d turn out, I didn’t think he’d start and be good and whatnot), I wanted us to get the Finnish PG guy (though I thought he was pretty bad in summer league), and thought Taurean Green and McBob were good picks because they are good ol’ fashioned “good in college let’s just see how they do in the NBA” type picks. Low risk, could be a big gain.

I tend to make my judgements after I watch the person for a bit, through one media or another, based on how they move, how they score, what their body is like, how fluid they are, etc. I base a lot on how they look when I watch ’em, and then I like to consult the numbers.

Since the Paul/Deron draft, and our subsequent suckitude and then uprising, I feel like I’ve learned a lot about player scouting and development potential… as much as a fan sitting at home can, of course.

Robin was often called the better defender when they were at Stanford

I never saw it— I always thought they were relative equals on the defensive end and people praised Robin’s defense to make him feel better since he was so vastly inferior to Brook in terms of offensive skill, feel and polish.

I still think Robin can be an effective NBA player as a slightly less effective version of Joakim Noah. Brook, though, has all of his brother’s defensive ability as well as post moves and a jump shot. B. Lopez will be an all-star one day.

by GreatOden'sRaven on Jun 16, 2009 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But doesn't that lead back to the old "best player available" dilemma?

Why draft a guy who has the potential to be Dale Davis, when there are guards in the draft with the potential to be much more? And it’s not like Hill was about as likely as Griffin to be productive immediately. Beasley was supposed to be the most ready player in the last draft, and it only translated partly.

I knew Brook would be a player when, in his Freshman year

… he put up an 18 pts/11 rebounds/12 blocks against the Nick Young/Gabe Pruitt USC Trojans. I think Robin had like 4 blocks in that game also. USC kept challenging the trees and kept paying the price. I’ve never seen anything like it live. Stanford blocked 19 shots as a team that game if I recall correctly.

I would disagree

that Rubio’s boyishness should be held against him since he is already using a somewhat pre pubescent build fairly well then he could make a big jump once he fully matures.

At least this is the reasoning with cycling where you look for kids who still look like kids that are doing well rather than kids who have the build of a 30 year old when they are 17.

Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

by jonestr on Jun 16, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

But WILL his body mature?

I can’t think of another star athlete who looked like a mid-early-teenager as they are entering the draft as a 18/19 year old.

I agree with what you say if they are younger. Some bodies don’t fill out like others though, and I wonder if his body is going to really fill out as he ages, because he isn’t THAT young— he just looks really young. Everyone’s body is different though.

But hell, if we could get him, I’d take him and be happy. He seems pretty special when I watch him. If he hasn’t gone through puberty yet and will be even better once it hits, he’ll be purty good. If he has gone through puberty and this is Rubio’s man body (minus the strength training and NBA conditioning he’ll do), then I worry about his body.

Part of the problem of predicting Rubio and what he’ll be is that he is pretty unconventional, what with his age and his not-great athleticism but still seems to defend really well and is an amazing passer. And, he literally looks 13, but does well against men.

Since he looks so young and has done so well, is his doing well overvalued because his age and looks are factored too much into it? I dunno… you can’t deny he is special, but I dunno yet if it is a special that will get specialer. Bodies can change quite a bit during the “college years”, and Rubio’s man body could very well be a later blooming one.

If it ain’t, he will likely be limited by his body.

I can’t rightly predict one way or another, but right now, with what he’s got and his age and his skill, he is highly intriguing, and not just in the Sergio exotique way.

I would say that his lack

LeBron, the Knickerbockers, 2010 and stuff.

Can somebody with intimate knowledge of the Knicks masterplan enlighten me on the process for aquiring LeBron and then winning a championship? The fashionable talk these days says LeBron will be lured away from Cleveland so that he can win a championship in NY. What the team that surrounds him in NY looks like and how it is better than that which surrounds him in Cleveland is always conveniently ignored. It seems to be a foregone conclusion that LeBron + New York = Dynasty.

So what is the NY plan and situation? I know they are scrambling for the cap room. What would the team look like post-LeBron in the best case scenario? What does it look like in a realistic, attainable scenario? What other variables are they counting on to fall their way?

I always thought

That Lebron + New York = Money.

Part of the belief is that just by having Lebron on your team makes you 90% of the way to Dynasty land, and that is sorta right. But, if he goes to New York, it won’t be to win a title (unless their roster changes a lot over the next year), it’ll be because he doesn’t think he’ll win in Cleveland anyway and he wants to make more moolah in the outside basketball arenas.

I would say that

NJ is the better landing spot as they have tried to free up cap space and have some bankable talent to surround LeBron with. If they have another good draft this year then I think they are well on their way to making a good pitch for LBJ.

I guess the knicks would look a lot like they do know, but with LBJ, so you are probably right that it may be worse than CLE is now, but they do have a coach in place who plays the most player friendly basketball in the association, and a GM who has made some nice moves recently.

Still, if I was LBJ, and some have said that I am the LBJ of napping, I would go to NJ/Brooklyn

Some of my picks

I called Bayless in December 2 years ago

http://www.blazersedge.com/2007/12/19/181434/04

I will now call my shot at the 2008 NBA draft:

Jerryd Bayless.

and in my offseason 2008 plan was pretty right on as well

http://www.blazersedge.com/2008/2/29/409/17188

In conclusion I would do the following things

#1. Trade Jack and maybe more to move up in the draft

#2. Draft a combo guard

#3. Keep Webster, Frye and Sergio, let them have one more year and then decide in the summer of 2009 and see who is avalible, Paul or Williams, if anybody, if not we will be able to trade for a good PG and a bad contract as we will be able to take back a lot more salary than we give out.

Unfortunately much like this year, (but better) the upcoming year will be one of growth again, incorpoating Oden, Rudy and our #1 into the mix will take some work and I expect to be in the thick of the playoff race, probably division champion with 50-55 wins.

Lastly I was only 1 game off of what our final record last year would be in July 08

Nice call on Bayless

I remember, a few weeks before the draft, when we were all Westbrook/Alexander/uhhh whoever else there was, I asked “why not Bayless? I know he’s supposed to go #4, but why don’t we talk about him?” and people told me I was being silly and we couldn’t move up that much.

I can’t say I was calling for him, just was wondering about him, so I can’t say I called it.

YOU ARE THE MASTER PREDICTOR.

I just do what I do

I just get feelings on what works for this team. Next year I see us getting close to our win total from last year and am pretty sure we will not finish above 60, because as Cle showed us, having the best record does not always equal playoff success.

Better to come in 2nd or 3rd seed again and still be hungry. Kinda like how a lot of times teams that are about equal in talent but behind a little at half, say 2-4 pts come back to win more often than not as they feel that urgency.

As for this year, I see KP pushing hard for a vet PG like Kidd/Nash to bridge us to the Bayless era, signing a vet PF and drafting either a backup 3rd PG(Collison) or another wing defender. Look for Jerebko to be the 32nd pick as we need fresh young D’ive blood to throw at Lebron in the finals next year when Nic gets in foul trouble.

I wanted Bayless pre-draft...

link.

Was watching the 1997 NBA Draft this morning and saw

Chauncy Billups
6’3 203 pounds
32.7 MPG
.401 3 Point%
.413 FG%
.854 FT%
19.1 PPG
4.9 RPG
4.8 APG

This reminded me a lot of Jerryd Bayless

Jerryd Bayless
6’3 202 pounds
35.7 MPG
.407 3 Point%
.457 FG%
.839 FT%
19.7 PPG
2.7 RPG
4.0 APG

If Jerryd can even get to 80% of Billups, I think that’s a solid pick. I think he’s got the chance to be as good or even slightly better. I voted for Bayless over Westbrook, who is still largely unproven, even though I love both of them.

I stick by what I said…I think Bayless will bloom later and be a stud of a player.

Here's where I pimp Batum at 13...

link.

I would like to see the Blazers trade their 13 pick Up with JJ to get Westbrook. However, if they can’t, and if Westbrook is gone at 13, I’m all for picking up Batum. You can stash him in Euro for a few years, allowing him to develop "au natural"

Your risk-reward is pretty good there as well. He’s not going to be coming in crying for minutes or upsetting team chemistry. It gives you time to see who on our roster is worth keeping, and who isn’t. It helps alleviate our minute crunch, so we can give Rudy some time to see what he can do. Heck, maybe we even give Sergio some time if he comes back next year with an improved game and attitude.

They are on the beach (for some reason) and get a random stranger to select a card from a deck. The person shows the card and Penn (I think) walks over and smashes a giant urn (vase? …whatever) and lo and behold there is the same card!!! They then showed how it was done….basically they had 52 cards stashed all around the area….the trick was remembering where each was.

Most people use stories to memorize so many items

Each picture/symbol gets associated with an object, that you then place in an order that makes sense to you e.g. in your house or in a park that you often go to. Then you can go along your story and put the cards back in the order they were.

to letting coward watch my kids and teach them to disagree with themselves every third sentence and make nonsensical ramblings

i only leave my son with either one of my parents

my dad has a dui ..

what was the context of this question? and how is it pertinant to sports?

how stupid and frankly it seems a little bit that he’s race baiting.

Umm

How is this even a debate? Assuming the dog was not killed in self defense, then anyone with any mind at all would want to leave their kid with someone that has a DUI.

1. Killing animals is a common theme among sociopaths. DUI is a common theme among morons. Moron > Sociopath.

2. Good people don’t kill animals. (Again, barring self defense or mercy.) Good people do get DUIs.

3. Most people don’t drink when they’re watching someone’s kid. Those that do usually don’t take the kids places.

And so on.

You're really gonna go that route?

“would you rather leave your kid with a dog killer or…”

I’m pretty sure that it’s implied that this person did not kill the dog for food. I’d also wager that the dog was not killed in self defense or for a medical reason. CC doesn’t say that, but it seems pretty obvious to me.

Killing for food and killing for fun is quite a bit different. If you’re just being silly then sorry I missed the sarcasm. If you’re being serious, then sorry I expected things that are obviously implied to be clear to everyone else as well.

half joking/half serious

The serious part was just about the phrasing. If instead you had wrote: “Good people don’t kill animals for sport” I probably wouldn’t have responded at all

I'd trust Warren Moon over Michael Vick with a kid, although I'm a bit biased here.

1. I can relate personally to Moon’s legal troubles.

2. I neither have nor plan on having any children of my own.

Yet, that’s just my own opinion on the matter, so y’all should take it with a grain of salt.

It is a little slow

We obviously need to discuss out best DDR moments! I will go first.

I was owning some DDR when I suddenly started missing a bunch. This is unlike me, but I thought maybe I was just a hair off. About 10 seconds later, my foot steps on a hand that happens to be on the back arrow. Turns out my friend had been purposely screwing me up by pushing the down arrow whenever I was on the front 3. He was too slow on his last attempt and ended up with a broken finger because of it.

OWNED!

I wonder if Roybot was about to get banned if me or cloudy could jump in and take the bullet. Dave could ban one of us to forgive Roybot’s sins and then she could keep on blogging if she repented and stopped breaking site rules.
