The Hawks are shopping Josh Smith. (Portland sort of mentioned)
Apparently the problem is that whoever takes Smith has to pay him a 6 million trade kicker. There aren't many teams willing to pay that in this economy so it limits his possible destinations.
"You are going to see very few owners willing to do things like that anymore," one GM said. "I'm not saying he's impossible to trade. There are a few owners like Paul Allen, James Dolan, Mark Cuban and maybe Daniel Gilbert who would pay the money. But there aren't many."-espn

I don't see him fit well into the Blazers system, even though defensively he is what Travis only can hope to become
Dallas would be a good fit for him

Dirk/Josh Smith would be one of the most intriguing combos in the league.

After the July moratorium, a straight-up swap of Josh Smith for Josh Howard could help both teams.
Anyhow, Smith’s trade kicker should be worth $7,200,000 — as that’s 15% of the remaining $48,000,000 on his contract — which’d be spread out for cap purposes into four annual installments of $1,800,000.
Regarding Smith, however, he’d be a poor fit with the Portland Trail Blazers at small forward on offense.

Smith would fit decently in Dallas, and Howard becoming a Hawk would allow Horford to play at power forward, his actual position.

Josh Smith is the WORST thing that could happen to the Blazers.
People complain about LMA being a jump shooter?
He shot the lowest field goal percentage on two point jump shots in the ENTIRE NBA. What’s worse is that HALF his shots are 2 point jumpshots! eFG% on his jumpers was 34.9%! He has a career eFG% of 46%… for someone of his size and athleticism, that is simply ABYSMAL.
For Bedge’s sake, and for the sake of all our sanity, we must not get Josh Smith. He is widely believed to be one of the most athletic, and simultaneously underperforming players in the NBA.

Could this be who Kp was talking about at the Farmers Market?
Josh Smith is a beast who is just now growing into his potential. We just need to tame him and figure out if he can play the three?
I'll try anything twice!

if we didn't have batum
then yes.
from what I hear, he is a great defender and a termendous shot blocker, but he does shoot too much

While I understand his weaknesses....
as a poor jump-shooter who shoots too much, I think this is partially due to his circumstances. I have watched a decent number of Hawks games this season (as for whatever reason they show far more of their games than Blazer games down here in NZ) and it seems defences are more than willing to give him that 20-23 ft jumpshot entirely unguarded. It is a flaw in his game that he settles for this inefficient shot rather than using his athleticism to get to the rim however with the Blazers his role would change which could see this flaw become less prominent. LaMarcus takes the same 20-23 ft jumper with far greater success and as our legitimate 2nd option would take pressure off Smith on the offensive end.
This leads me to the one important positive I see in acquiring Smith….he is uniquely suited to the task of guarding Lebron. The Blazers will inevitably encounter some form of LeBron led team on any run to a championship and so dealing with him will be an unfortunate necessity. Smith’s outrageous athleticism, size, strength and commitment to the defensive end make him perfect to fill the role of attempting to slow down LeBron (and other bigger SF’s such as Carmelo, Pierce, Artest, Odom etc). With Batum providing a quicker more perimeter oriented brand of defense they could provide a defensive challenge to most wing players in the NBA today.
To me this makes him a better option for an upgrade at SF than many that have been proposed so far in this offseason (with the possible exception of Gerald Wallace) and I have no doubt he would be a net positive for the Blazers in the future. Certainly worth some combination of Rodriguez, Outlaw, Blake, Martell, Frye (S+T), 24 and 2nd rounders and a better investment of close to 10 million per year than Hedo, Odom, Ariza or Artest.
In: Conley, Blair, Artest, Mills, Freeland
Out: Blake, Outlaw, Rodriguez, Ruffin, Frye, Shav, Raef

He certainly has talent
but I would say the dealing with the LeBron issue is not a one person job. The Magic showed that funneling with a quicker forward, which we have, into an athletic shot blocker, which we may have next year, is the recipe for sucessipe against LeBron. I would definitely prefer to see our investments go towards more pressing issues like pg or backup PF than trying to stop a guy we will not see in the playoffs for a couple of years.
as an aside it is cool to see some international flavor on the BE. Keep it up.
Life is exhausting when you are this stupid.

I see your point
However, I see value in having a guy who is both quick and an athletic shot blocker in terms of dealing with Lebron. Plus using the two player approach assumes the Cavs (or Knicks/Nets in the future) are stupid enough to continue the Lebron vs. everyone offense. If he is ever put into a scheme where his passing and playmaking skills are fully utilised then having a player capable of staying with him and defending with some physicality would be invaluable IMO. I also see him as useful for another 2003 draftee within our division who causes us difficulties……
BTW – I am expecting us to see LeBron in the playoffs within a couple of years if we make the rights move this offseason and next. Gotta think big if your gonna make it big!
As for where to invest our various assets I agree that finding a better starting pg and a tough backup pf take priority over upgrading at sf but my post was designed to address Smith in comparison to other sf prospects mentioned rather than suggest he is the best move overall. Sorry if I was a bit unclear on that!
Glad to provide an international perspective (however flawed it may be) but you should know that being a Blazers fan in NZ is tough…..every second game we see down here is a Lakers game and as a result there is a fast spreading pandemic of Laker fandom. There was one Blazer game screened in NZ last season and that was only because we were playing the Fakers. Without BE and live game feeds I don’t think I could keep it up!

SF:Wallace, Smith, Butler or bust
PF:Draft Dejuan Blair, add Freeland

I agree.
Although I think having Josh Smith actually eliminates the need for a tough backup PF, as he’s terrific in that role anyway.

maybe the Blazers could sign him
and make him wear a “soft” cast on his shooting hand, even when it’s not broken?
(kind of like a “do not bark anymore!” shock collar for fido)
