Veteran needed? Mason healthy and available
The Blazers are in need of a veteran presence and lack a slasher at the 3.
Enter Desmond Mason, a defensive minded swingman who is a Nate favorite, is the definition of toughness, can slash and play well in the transition game, is an unrestricted FA and just happens to live in Portland and spend a lot of time at the practice facility in the off season.
With the expected departure of Travis, he would fit in great as a proven vet who can provide some spark of the bench if necessary and will not demand a salary of more than $3-4M/year.
I think Mason definitely signs in Portland.

What expected departure of Travis?
While it is a possibility he gets traded, that is a far cry from expected departure.

I like him and he's from Portland.
“Mason, who is awaiting the birth of his second child at his offseason home in Portland, Ore., will not play pick-up games this summer for precautionary reasons. His workouts are expected to include running drills, weigh-lifting and other weight-bearing activities.”

I thought just his wife was...
He married a Portland gal so now he lives in Portland, I thought.
I thought he had his own ties to the OKC area…
I can’t say we could really use him though, and I doubt he’d want to come to us. If he is healthy I hope he can defend again, because he never developed anything close to a jumper and age + injuries dont = a player who relies solely on athleticism lasting long.
With Martell and Batum getting the bulk of the SF minutes, and Rudy and Roy getting some spot SF minutes (if we don’t have Outlaw anymore, which IS an “if”), Mason would just sit on the bench and not be super useful. He won’t be as good of a defender as Batum is most likely (or at least, if we’re going to play a defensive player, we’d rather play Batum because it is both development AND getting what we want at this time), and as a role player SF we won’t change the offense for him and he can’t shoot (at all) which could really hurt our offense.
Plus, for HIS sake, I’d rather he go somewhere that is up tempo and won’t ask a SF to have to make a jumper to save his life. We just can’t use him and he’d be wasting the few years he has left in the league being a practice player. That’s no fun for a nice guy like him!

It all depends on how cheap he is.
Batum isn’t going to cut it as our only lock-down defender, especially in the playoffs. It would be nice to have another guy who can give you 6 fouls coming off the bench to guard whoever’s giving you trouble.
Is 3 million a year too much of a risk? I have no idea, but it could be something to think about.

Seems like most players KP "targets" in have one thing in common they usually can shoot
If he wants we could put him at the end of our bench and make spot substitutions. if he works out great but I think 3 mill is even too high, he would want a larger role then we would probably give him. We could do better then him any how.

Oh yeah.
He might be my favorite player in the league, but I’m not sure we could pull off a trade at this point.

The Hornets are HIGHLY motivated to dump salary.
That’s the only reason I bring his name up, plus I think he’d be a great fit for the team.
2-4 the who
Mason would be the perfect veteran
Oh wait, you’re not talking about Anthony?
he gets his hair cut correct

his free throw form
makes my heart weep from its beauty.

As a bonus, his free throw shooting form is always good for a few laughs.
Not quite Chuck Hayes-level comedy but still quality.

Oh man you're right there!
That stroke has more hitches than a Charles Barkley tee shot!
2-4 the who
Desmond Mason doesn't shoot efficiently enough from mid-range or downtown to play small forward ...
with the Portland Trail Blazers. While Mason played some small forward back in the day for Nate McMillan in Seattle, he’d space the floor by playing Vladimir Radmanovic at the other forward position simultaneously.
Besides, Portland already has a glut at the small forward position and Mason is on his last legs nowadays. Plus, if filling the third-string small forward spot develops into a matter of importance, Ime Udoka would be a better free-agent option.
I strongly agree with this.
His 45.6 TS% last year was incredibly bad. Three out of his four last seasons were below 50%, as well. Plus Nic already provides good wing defense without the remarkably bad offensive percentages.
He came off a bad injury too
Although i like him i dont think he is better than what we already have and he is coming off a serious injury
If we are to acquire a player such as Gerald Wallace
won’t nate have to change up his system. Crash isnt a fantastic 3pt shooter, and McMillan should adjust the offense to fit his talent.. same could be said for Mason
