6/14/2009 Junk Drawer!

Why do "junk drawers" have topics?

In all seriousness, these things should be random, off-topic threads about anything and everything. Whatever sparks somebody's mind ought to be up for discussion at Blazer's Edge—regardless of the topic at hand.

So, with that noted, I want y'all to write about whatever the heck grabs your fancy—no matter whether or not others are interested in it.

All right, folks, let's do it to it!

Allergies is street slang

For poorly cut cocaine. The chunks have clogged up your nasal passages.

Get some warm (not hot) water, a spray battle, and squirt it up there gently. I’ve never had this problem but I bet it works. If ya got a neti pot, do that.

generic claritan from Costco is cool.

It’s like one one-hundredth of the price of the name brand, and it works the same.

pshh... works the same...

I’ve been using it for days… it does nothing for me.. at least since the stupid meth-heads of the world made them take out all the good stuff. I’ve been forced to go get a perscription for real allergy meds. Just got Allegra D and Flonase… they seem to be working so far.

at least since the stupid meth-heads of the world made them take out all the good stuff.

The old medication is still available. You just have to ask the pharmacist for it, and they’ll give it to you without a prescription. You need to be identified and signed out for it though.

When my wife and I got the flu, we got it from the pharmacy regularly. They’re mainly looking for folks who want to buy it in bulk, they’re not worried about people who are legitimately sick who are looking for some relief.

Superhuman powers

If you could have 1 superhuman power what would it be and why?

I’ve thought about this long and hard over the years…
I’d either choose Superhuman Metabolism, so that I can eat and never get fat…or I’d like to have Mel Gibson’s power in What Women Want…so that I can umm…know what women wantt.

The power to never need to sleep

I could sleep if I wanted to, for fun, but otherwise my power would be to never be tired and always alert and awake.

I would get more done and sleeping is super lame.

Mortimer

by Mortimer on Jun 14, 2009 2:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

if you never needed sleep

you would essentially become at least 50% more efficient assuming a typical person sleeps 8 hours.

Plus all the slow

Getting ready for bed time, the waking up time, making your bed, it all adds up to about 20 hours, leaving only 4 hours for actual productivity.

If I didn’t have to sleep I could add at least 3 extra posts about why Oden just needs to be in shape a day.

Super Metabolism = Win

Being able to control it to eat all the fat in your diet, while scoffing down massive amounts of heart attack inducing meat would be heaven.

The need for sleep is irritating.

I want Muscle Memory so I can play like Roy while being as smooth as Rudy on guitar.

I like this idea

let’s not talk about the standard superpowers (flying, reading minds, super strength). Let’s do superpowers that could be featured in a sequel to

Super metabolism (Philthy)
Super insomnia (Morty)

I choose super decisiveness. I’m sick of having those lame conversations with friends on what fast food place to go.
“Where do you want to go eat?”
“I don’t know. I don’t really care. I’m not that hungry.”
“Yeah, me either.”
“Magnum, where do you want to go?”
“SUBWAY!”

I've been saying SUBWAY a lot too recently

I just started getting the grilled chicken with double meat for 2 bucks extra, as many tomatoes as can fit on it, and avacado. Footlong is about 8 bucks for the best sammich ever.

For a fast food sammich, o’ course.

gross

i can’t do subway unless i’m really pressed for time. so many better sammich joints in portland that subway just doesn’t do it for me.

Meat Cheese Bread, Kenny and Zukes, and Bunk Sandwiches all have far more interesting options than subway does. Roughly 8 bucks as well.

by Philthyanimal on Jun 14, 2009 3:01 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

YOU'RE GROSS

The grilled chicken is just grilled chicken (processed together of course but low fat). Nice n’ simple n’ yum.

Meat cheese bread, Kenny and Zukes, and Bunk sandwiches have all had AIDs breakouts in the recent past, so good luck getting a sandwich there and not getting AIDs. I mean, medication nowadays, you’ll likely live a normal, relatively healthy like if you keep up on your physical condition and can afford the meds, but is that worth it just for a sandwich?

Subway has never given anyone a veneral disease. Now I don’t work for Subway, so I have nothing to gain from saying so.

You need to get tested, Philthy. I worry for you.

Mortimer, caring.

by Mortimer on Jun 14, 2009 3:05 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Subway is similar to Diet Coke

I think its funny when people order huge gut busting value meals, but justify it by ordering a diet coke. Sweet tomatoes is a fun place to eat, but its ironic to see obese people eating multiple plates of salad that is drenched in dressing.

Senior Asian ambassador of Blazers Edge

by Philthyanimal on Jun 14, 2009 3:08 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don't get it to be healthy

I get it because it is nearby, I can get double meat on decent bread and avacado and cheese for cheap.

Plus it’s a nice sized sammich with sometimes leftovers.

And it’s open late. It isn’t my favorite sammich place, but it is there and decent and that is that and how DARE you judge me.

I thought we were friends. There’s no “I” in Mensa, Philthy… but there is a “me”. As in “me and you, are over”.

Mortimer, heartbroken.

by Magnum on Jun 14, 2009 3:16 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

you know

I hardly ever see fat people in subway. I eat there because it’s a good combination of fast, tasty and cheap (cue 5 dollar footlong song). I don’t need fancy sandwiches, in fact, that seems kinda strange to me.

I’ve got a question for everyone. Can you go to Quiznos and NOT get your sandwich toasted?

"It’s a good ol’ fashioned Rip City beat down!"

by Magnum on Jun 14, 2009 3:14 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya know

I hadn’t gone to Subway for years until they did the 5 dollar footlong on all footlongs, and there is one close to me but more important next door to an Indian restaurant my wifey likes and I didn’t want Indian so I said “ok, I’ll have some crappy Subway”.

On a whim, I chose something I never got before (the grilled chicken), and a whole new world opened up before me.

I am a quick study and the 2 bucks for double meat and a buck for half a avacado became obvious additions to ensure my enjoyment of the sammich. Plus the italian herb cheese bread.

And I’ve never looked back.

i admit i like the grilled chix...but its not really chicken

i mean…the meat is white, and it does have char marks yet subway doesnt have a grill. the meat is too…umm processed for me to truely believe its 100% chicken and not some chicken blended with tofu or something as a filler.

When Quiznos first came out their meat was far superior to Subway.

Subway had to change or die and they did. Good for us. Same here, I quit going to Subway for a long time, when I went back they had much better meat.

There's this one taco stand that always has huge lines

Called “Tito’s tacos”. We finally went there the other month and it was, LITERALLY, the worst fast food I have ever had. It was like a baby’s diaper, it looked disgusting, tasted flat and plain and cheap as hell, and was generally awful.

And there’s always a huge line and the word of mouth is so good. I finally found a friend who can see through the charade, and she agrees… it’s the worst fast food ever and she hates that her boyfriend is obssessed with it.

Good lord it was awful. I’ve never been so angry after eating fast food.

Yeah, I just get the yummy 80/20 meat from Trader Yo's

Cook it nice and juicy, don’t overcook, nice and thick and it takes 5 minutes.

Cheaper than even the dollar menu and 80 zillion times nummier.

i'm not a big fan of fast food burger joints

but 5 guys is a decent burger…but the prices and the time it takes to receieve the food are more in line with restaurant quality burgers than fast food. for restaurant quality burgers in town… Slow Bar makes a solid burger, as does a few other places.

Jack in the box kills me,

they come out with a good breakfast sandwich, it had black forest ham on it. And then it didn’t taste so good, so I ask, and guess what, no more black forest ham on it. They come out with a good burger, and then a month or two later I couldn’t eat that, I mean really couldn’t eat it, I was spittin’ out gristle like crazy. tried again with the same result.
I think they used some high quality meat and then changed.

The jackie box sirlion or whatever fancy burger they had...

…we tried it for lunch one day, and it WAS good, and then yeah— weeks/months later it was different, or at least seemed so. AND they stopped offering real cheddar cheese and you had to get American or swiss, which isn’t as yum

Eidetic memory (photographic memory)

I would never forget anything I read/watched/listened to/experienced (maybe a killswitch to forget selectively still would come in handy, it’s how the human brain actually keeps you sane since many things are not worth remembering. The problem is how to tell it which ones are). I could learn a new language as fast as I could read through a dictionary. Master any job in a week to max a month. When I've gone to Disneyland and Disneyworld recently

Still seems like the kids are crazy for Mickey and Donald and stuff, but the cartoons were always so much lamer than, say, Warner Bros and other cartoons, but we still ate it up as kids.

Disney makes sure to utilize the new characters and movie characters too, of course, but you should see the kids swarm Mickey. I would say I have never even seen a cool Mickey cartoon, they are all lameazoid.

They gave us a free weekend (1 nights stay, plus $100 coupon at Legends Restaurant, and $100.00 for gambling) when we purchased our season tix last year. Finally got a chance to redeem them. BTW that was a ginormous meal …., an appetizer plus 2 steak dinners still only came to about $60….so we went ahead and ordered 6 deserts to go….which got it up to about $98.00.

It's what he's used to doing at this point in the series

Regardless of what has happened in the series up to then.

Now he expects to get even more favorable calls to ensure the Lakers close this out.

What I HOPE the deal is, is that he just hates Kobe so much and soooo doesn’t wanna cement Kobe’s legacy that he is willing to peeve off the refs so much that they refuse to give his teams the right calls. Phil Jackson is gonna throw the series now!

He knows he has plenty of years left to win more than Red, and Kobe’s career is almost over and this may be it. C’mon, Phil, listen to that lil’ voice in your head that tells you what is right!!

My trash talk is usually outside the sporting world.

I wage wars with my pro-army, pro-war buddies and then we go our seperate ways on which sports we follow.

Of course, I could argue that British sports are on the whole not as good as (one) American sports with them.

Exceptionally amusing side-note

I also argue with the same brother about being pro-war/pro-bush several years ago. He made an epic quote ‘any amount of life loss is justified if the price of gasoline goes down’ and I then realized that arguing about sports would lead to much more reasonable conversations.

I get similar results.

“We had to liberate the Iraqi people”

So you took the whole spin when they didn’t find Nuclear Weapons? Do you relaise we sent them money to fund the production of illegal biological weapons and possible plutuniom before hand? Or that we funded Saddam after he commited the worst acts of murder and violence? Or do you realise we’ve alienated an entire religion, causing a 100% turnaround in opinions in the largest Muslim state? Do you know both Israeli and Saudi researchers believe 85% of fighters in Iraq were radacalised by the war itself and were not involved in fundamentalism before hand? Or that we spent so much time protecting oil fields that Iraqs culture disappeared within weeks, 15,000 of the 20,000 pieces in their natural history museum were stolen while archaeoligical sites were destroyed? And do you know that both US and UK intelligence were aware that the war would increase terrorist activites, 315 suicide bombings between 1980 and 2003 worldwide (mostly from Sri Lanka) moving to 400 since 2003 in Iraq alone?
No?

I get really, really into it on that kind of subject.

I like to support the underdog, which is the third world to me. It’s easy to look down from your thrown and decide the fate of others but when you look at your own states actions they start doing things that resemble those whom they were condemning. I find it incredibly important that people don’t just buy the fabricated story that comes with governmental decisions and search for real answers and figures.

by The Pirate on Jun 14, 2009 10:29 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely!

Never thought about the connection, but I am also someone who supports the underdog. But I’ve always been very distrustful of the supposed truths I am told by authority figures.

And about propaganda… I remember 6-7 years ago seeing a calendar being sold in a Walmart. It was called ‘Forces of Freedom’ and had pictures of Allied jets and carriers and what not. All I could think about is why this calendar was not titled ‘Weapons of Mass Destruction’.

more off topic junk

Does anyone else watch Nancy Grace? I watch her show for the same reason I tune into Oreilly and Hannity- to know the enemy.

Nancy cracks me up when she comes down on her guests, sneering and nostril flaring, usually to defense attorneys, “OK Judachay, come on… one more comment like that and you are outta here! Next caller, Ethel in Birmingham…” “Hi Nancy, love your show and your twins are beautiful” (insert total schizoaffective facial demeanor reversal) “Thank you Dear” (insert phony tears)

Its great stuff. Part II: O’Reilly

Washed out in the NBA? Come to Puerto Rico, it's almost like playing in America

http://www.shamsports.com/content/pages/2009/05/puerto-rico-new-china.jsp

Marcus Williams, Blazers draft pick Ricky Sanchez, J.R. Pinnock, Marcus Fizer, Donta Smith, Matt Freije, Lee Nalon, DerMarr Johnson, Jumaine Jones, …. They are all there. Big family reunion. Mhm, with a little bit of luck I would expect a few readers here to could have made that too earning a nice living. Pirate, don’t go to Mexico, go to Puerto Rico.

Curry & Co. workout for Bobcats (tying in to rumors Blazers will also work him out)

http://www.rufusonfire.com/2009/6/5/900522/bobcats-pre-draft-workout-video?ref=yahoo

He shoots amazing in that video, barely hitting the rim. He reminds me more and more of a mini-Roy, smart player and humble, who could help us open up the lane with his shooting and facilitating. If the Blazers could somehow acquire him, that might still be an amazing addition. Big question is if he can defend quick/athletic NBA point guards. He is not nearly as athletic as Bayless.

Jennings is still backpedalling from his Rubio comments. Angry call by his agent? Kings not impressed (reportedly liked Flynn better)?
One more thing, I went overboard about the Rubio thing, I was wrong for saying he’s all hype that’s not fair. I was wrong, I guess I just wanna compete against the best. But off the court the kid is a great guy. I will never disrespect him, I just like too go against the best

by Norsktroll on Jun 14, 2009 5:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah basing his opinion on a game in which Rubio played 8 minutes is not fair

“he’s all hype, just because he went to the olympics and has been playing pro ball since he was 14” paraphrasing that statement in isolation is funny.

Well then I would suggest:

For Hip Hop: The Cool Kids, Brother Ali, Blue Scholars, Tallib Kweli. Also an interesting thing to do with hip hop is to look at a list of the best songs in hip hop and buy some of those. Getting stuff like the Sugarhill Gang is always refreshing.
For indie/alternative: Coldplay’s new album is good. Also check out: “Better to Be” by Liam Finn, "Magick"by Klaxons, “Nefi + Girly” by Asobi Seksu, “Halfway Home” by TV on the Radio, “Standing in the Way of Control” by The Gossip. I got all of those songs from this british tv show called Skins which is a real gem for finding new music since they mostly use UK acts which don’t get a lot of exposure over here. Hope that helped! If you ever need any more music help, just let me know. Music is my vice and I love helping people find new stuff.

Does anyone watch True Blood on HBO?

I’ve always liked vampire and werewolf etc. type movies and shows. I’ve heard good things of True Blood but never watched. Last weekend I was scrolling through On-Demand and noticed they had all 12 episodes of True Blood season one on there so I watched them all. Not a bad series besides a few annoying characters. First episode of season two is on in a few minutes.

it’s a big invest (emotionally, too), but definitely worth it. you’ll especially enjoy michael c. hall of Dexter fame. He got famous off that show.

and i didnt like it at all.

the main character was annoying (not to mention one could drive a truck through the gap in her front teeth…) and i just wasn’t feeling the whole “vampire” vibe

rebooting right now....just got service pack 3 done...i think.

should work now. I don’t know why I’m so adamant about making it work….my last PC i just let crumble when it gave me problems… I guess I figure i can squeeze a summer out of it so i can get a windows 7 machine in the fall/winter.

by prezofdeath on Jun 14, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The specs you described sound ok for a machine to keep you going...

I’m running on a laptop with specs just slightly under those you’re working with (mine’s a core duo 1.6, 2GB, shared Intel video), and Windows 7 is smooth so far on it.

I don’t do much gaming or anything, but for regular day-to-day work, it’s working great.

by Timmay! on Jun 14, 2009 10:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmm, I might end up trying it at some point

right now I’ve got a headache from re-installing XP on it a few times. :-p

so you gonna’ wait for the real launch to change your whole media system to 7 or are you confident enough that you might do it before then?

by prezofdeath on Jun 14, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd prefer to change it during the beta period, but I'm running into a bug

I’ve got a setup that’s causing Windows 7 to constantly use network bandwidth. I’ll probably need to work with them to see if they plan to resolve the bug before release (it’s somewhere between a feature and a bug. I call it a bug.)

Otherwise, I’d probably move to Windows 7 sooner than later… now that Comcast has pushed Clear QAM (aka digital tuning) down our throats, Windows 7 is the best way to make it work without moving to a third-party setup.
