Young Money Ethers Ricky
The single must-see video from the lead up to the 2009 NBA draft.
Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee with the goods. Brandon Jennings tells us how he really feels about Ricky Rubio.
Absolutely classic.
A rivalry was born?
The video can't help but remind me of another awkward caught on camera moment.
PS The reaction over at Sac Town Royalty is definitely worth reading.

A little too cocky if you ask me...
I have no idea how Rubio or Jennings will turn out, but for one guy to call out another prospect isn’t exactly classy.

No, but he did keep getting asked about Rubio over and over again.
Not the best move, but it is pretty funny. Only problem is that it is the interviewer who needed the smack talk, not Rubio.

Jennings looks much faster than Telfair
Reminds me of TJ Ford. I don’t think Telfair possesses the ball handling skills, speed, or play making ability of Jennings. I’m curious to see how Jennings plays next year.

Gotta disagree
Bassy is as fast and has as good a handle as about anyone in the league. He just can’t finish to save his life and has a broke J.
Jennings is similar coming into the league, but he has incredible athleticism, so hopefully that translates into him being able to score at the basket in the NBA.
by LOOSH on Jun 12, 2009 3:47 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Telfair
Every time I watch him, he reminds me of a young Eric Snow. Of course, without the defensive prowess of Snow.
I say that Jennings is faster because I can see his quickness off the pick and roll. Telfair’s quick feet doesn’t seem translate on the court. Sergio is a PG who doesn’t look very quick or fast, but his speed with the dribble allows him to play much faster than Telfair, especially on pick and rolls.. With Jennings’ athleticism and reach, I think he can be more creative with his dribbles allowing him to move more freely.

insteresting that Jennings take
on his game against Rubio, and the “experts” takes are quite different. Draft express had this to say on Jennings profile about the game,
Defensively, Jennings struggled. Ricky Rubio blew by him on a couple of occasions even though everyone in the building knew he could only drive left, and he even fell down on one possession trying to stay in front of his man. The pick and roll gave him all sorts of trouble, and he again made very little effort to try and crash the glass or get his team extra possessions.
The same was posted on Rubio’s profile,
In addition, he was able to display his terrific court vision repeatedly, as he is simply unable to score with his right hand being in the shape it’s currently in. He was able to beat Brandon Jennings off the dribble badly on two separate occasions, and repeatedly delivered incredibly creative passes to teammates that surprised even them based on the way they reacted.
Also Slam Magazine was at the game, and had almost a play by play on their website.
Even though the game seemed like it was going to be a blowout, Roma managed to make it an exciting finish. To me, the two most talented players on the court — hands down — were Brandon and Ricky. Ricky was Ricky, playing his game full of intangibles and moxie, even though he was essentially playing with one hand. I don’t think he even took a shot, but he finished with his normal complement of assists and rebounds and steals. USA Today’s story says Brandon finished with 12 points and 2 assists, though I know that’s wrong because Brandon had two assists in the first four minutes of the game.
If you could combine Brandon’s offense and Ricky’s defense, you’d have the no-doubt consensus number one draft choice in 2009. Even with their respective strengths and weaknesses, as it stands now I’d take either one of them in the lottery.

The "one hand" thing is important
that same DraftExpress thing points out:
Having sat out the entire season thus far, besides a short 2-minute spurt last weekend in the ACB, this obviously wasn’t the best time to evaluate Ricky Rubio’s progress. Regardless, there were a couple of things to take away from watching him play (briefly) against Rome and in practice the following day.
-His impact extends far beyond his ability to score:
We always knew this, but watching him play with only one hand (in practice it was almost painful to watch him shoot two-handed layups, air-ball mid-range jumpers and brick free throws) only amplified this point.

Here are the stats from the game Rubio played against Jennings, Jennings remembers a few things wrong
http://www.euroleague.net/main/results/showgame?gamenumber=7&gamecode=80&phasetypecode=rs
They didn’t play the same minutes (Jennings had 3x), he still had fewer assists, and Rubio was just coming back from hand surgery.
I still think Jennings COULD become the better player, but trash talking Rubio based on wrong facts isn’t fair either.

Jennings got an assist on 34% of possessions which was
in the top 10 in the Italian league. He also didn’t play the majority of his minutes at point guard.

I'm not saying Jennings is a bad passer, just that Rubio was coming back from injury and still got about as many assists
That game wasn’t much to brag about for Jennings, it’s not like he dominated Rubio or the opposition. And his team lost. Best player on his team in that game was Andre Hutson, and nobody talks about acquiring him.

Or Ibrahim Jaber, who had 11 points, 7 rebounds (Jennings none) and 4 assists.

Young Money is the nickname of Brandon Jennings. He also has it as a back tattoo.

It’s also the record label of Lil Wayne, but I don’t think Ben wanted to allude to that.

You’ll get results for the class of chemical compounds called ethers, which have the structure R-O-R, where R = hydrocarbon. You have to type “+ slang” or something similar to find the definition for the verb “ether”.

I think he’s completely wrong, but that’s funny that he had the stones to actually speak his mind like that.
Based on what I’ve seen, if anyone looks like they aren’t ready for the NBA, it’s Jennings. But I’m sure he’ll be alright after a couple seasons. But he’s just as much of a project, if not more so, than Rubio. AND he’s got a lower ceiling, so that’s not really going for him either.

Yeah while I like what Jennings could become one day it’s an open secret that Jennings is not more NBA ready than Bayless, but because he is a slightly better passer somehow he looks like a more ready point guard.
Doesn’t change the tempo, rather careless with the ball, often too flashy, light frame, not equally strong with both hands, bad shooting percentages (and form, he still fades away) in Italy against players who are not more athletic than those he will encounter in the NBA, etc. etc.
by Norsktroll on Jun 12, 2009 4:02 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you're going to wait on a prospect
with our weapons you want your point guard to be a guy that passes like Jennings. He gets all his teammates great looks. He’s also a much better defender of quicker players and he’s as natural a ball thief as you’ll find (he averaged 5 steals per 40 minutes last year).
by as11osu on Jun 12, 2009 4:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It seems like the Blazers think they only have to wait one more year for Bayless
Not sure that is the case, but you would almost guaranteed have to wait longer for Jennings and even Rubio (if all get the same playing time). If the Blazers can get him for cheap somewhere between 8 and 15 I’m all for that, but he doesn’t seem like a KP/Nate player. Not a “system” player.
by Norsktroll on Jun 12, 2009 4:21 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bayless is a ways from Jennings as a passer
Jennings looks up while dribbling. I think you’re being too harsh on the kid. He delivers his passes swiftly and on point. I can already see how his pick and roll game will translate to the NBA. With his speed, handle, and athleticism, I think he’ll thrive in the NBA game that has much more spacing than Europe.
His shot is broken and needs work, no doubt about that.

The weaknesses I listed are weaknesses mentioned by scouts. And there are more. It’s a problem with every player who gets observed for a long time. Now the book on Ricky’s weaknesses is also far thicker than a year ago. Or Hansbrough’s than when he was in his sophomore year. I have said many times I like Jennings, but I can see why his play and his attitude might make teams pass up on him.
by Norsktroll on Jun 12, 2009 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah.
There is no way the Blazers are interested in Jennings unless he fell really far, and even then I doubt they would take the chance. The Blazers need to solve the PG situation this year and he’s not far enough along to help out in that regard. Still it’s encouraging to see that he’s improving on his weaknesses since high school. Chad Ford quotes one scout who’s seen Jennings as much as anyone and he said a lot of positive things.
“He’s become a much better and more committed defender this year. Everyone who has watched him play would acknowledge that.”-espn
That alone gives me hope for his chances as a prospect… just not with the Blazers.

After watching Telfair and Sergio, I am completely done watching flashy PG’s come through Portland- it will never be our style. Rubio might do something in 5 years, maybe. It’s a long shot, but I would imagine the Magic will have to sort out having both Alston and Nelson. Clearly they’ve been doing fine without him, and maybe the shaky performances of late due to injury will be enough for Portland to offer a back-up PG in Sergio, along with Outlaw and Frye for Nelson.

OKC has Westbrook
Obviously the Rockets had one (Brooks)
After this draft of other quick guards, many more teams that the Blazers face will have them.
The Blazers will not go far in the playoffs if don’t have one to defend against those “quicks”.
And please don’t chime in with…. Bayless can do it.

I agree Rubio is probably way overhyped. I could be wrong but I don’t think he is anywhere near as good as most people think he is. Beside Rubio would be a horrible fit for this team. Nate wants disciplined pg’s not flashy ones.
Even though I agree with him Jennings comments were low class and unsportsman like. He has a strong possibilty of being a future team cancer. I would avoid both players.
