Considering we've only made it to the top of the mountain once
- is a pretty good spot
The NBA: Where Amazingly Bad Officiating Happens.
Ugh.
The Jazz are ahead of us. Congrats to them on never winning a championship in the history of their franchise.
Bill Simmons will promptly come out with his own list
He will have the Celtics at 1 and the Lakers at 3, just so Boston can have a higher average.
I can't argue
with being behind LA, Boston, Chicago, or San Antonio.
The Sixers, OK—even though most of their damage was done long ago.
A good argument could be made that the Blazers are a better franchise than the Suns and Jazz, neither of whom have won a title (though both have several Finals appearances over the years).
One minor surprise was that the Rockets were tenth. Given that Houston has won two championships in the 90s, and had two Finals appearances in the 80s, I’m surprised they aren’t rated higher. Hollinger might have penalized them for their relocation from San Diego a long time ago—but given that San Diego is one of those cities with multiple franchise failures, I’m not sure that’s entirely fair.

Speaking of relocation penalties
…the thunder were #12. As I don;t have Insider, I can’t read Hollinger’s comments on them.
I think a FAIRER relocation penalty would be: Only the current instantiation of a franchise counts for the positive stats; but the divisor is the total years of the franchise’s existence. This wouldn’t unfairly penalize franchises that moved early in their existence (say, the Jazz or the Rockets) but have become NBA stalwarts. It would move the Thunder clear to the bottom of the rankings, as they would have only one season of mediocrity, divided by nearly 40 years of existence. Highly rated defunct franchises, such as the Sonics or the Washington Capitals, could be presented separately.

I'm trying to get a bunch of rich guys together to bring a team back to San Diego
We could support it.
I'm a really really ridiculously good looking orange mocha frappaccino drinking manhammer sandwich
I agree with all the teams except the Jazz.
a.) Their team is inappropriately named based on a different city.
b.) No title
c.) Worst fans… ever.
d.) Ugh.

The Suns at 5? The Jazz at 7?
hmm…..if we would have won one more championship, or when we win another championship, we are in the top 5. But I’m a little surprised how far down Detroit is.
Red Hot and Rolling
For all the hate on Jazz/Suns
Hollinger is looking at more than just titles. Obviously titles are good, but I think he sees 10 years of playoff appearences as being better than 1 title, 5 other appearences, and 4 non playoff years.
Obviously some of this is subjective too. Utah has an entire era (Stockston/Malone) that never won a title, but is more well known than any era Portland has ever put together. The sheer length of that era is astounding too. There was practically a decade that you wondered “is this the year” for the Jazz. Sadly, it just never happened.
Now the Suns… I’m not as sure about, but I’m sure Hollinger has followed their past better than I.
What's with the ending?
“They finally made it back in 2009 only to meet an amazingly familiar fate: yet another first-round playoff defeat.”
Nothing mentioned about the fact that we were really young, and for sure we’re going to be a force soon.
This year is NOT a building season!!
